Christopher Hitchens does a real number on Hillary
today. While the rest of the pundit world spins its wheels about
an utterly unimportant matter (Geithner's back taxes: an
obviously innocent and understandable mistake) and about an only
moderately important set of disqualifiers (Holder's problems:
Hell, if Jeff Sessions thinks Holder is pretty good, that's
plenty of solace for me!), leave it to Hitchens and Hillyer,
clearly an ideologically aligned pair (NOT!), to focus on the
real, clear and present danger to the Republic: Hillary Rodham
Clinton.
It is a mark of the continuing lack of seriousness of the
Republican Party and perhaps of the conservative movement that
Hillary's nomination has been met with so little outrage. This is
evidence that political calculation more than principle is
involved in who draws opposition: Hillary is seen as more
politically potent, and thus is treated as off limits now to
vocal criticism. But on the merits, there is no way that ANYbody
else with Hillary's light foreign policy record, manifold current
conflicts of interest, and incredibly shady ethical past that
includes a host of highly suspicious foreign entanglements
(Riady/Huang/Chung etcera etcetera almost infinitum), could
possibly survive even the ordinary level of scrutiny afforded a
nominee to such a high position. Compared to Hillary's record,
the late John Tower was an absolute saint -- and Tower was deemed
unfit for office.
Consider me, once again, the canary in the coal mine.
Conservatives will rue the day they didn't make more of a fuss
about the appointment of Hillary Clinton to the State Department.
It's a dangerous power base for a dangerous woman.
More dangerous than O-face as president, I think not. O-face
wouldn't even be able to get a security clearance where I work,
so if he can still be the commander in chief anything goes as far
as i'm concerned. Hilary being Secretary of ... is a non-started
for me, I just hope the whole administration and congress fail
spectacularly at everything they do, and hey maybe Hilary will
contribute to that failure, I want them to be as incompent as
they can be, so next time maybe we can get some real change.

Quin, how do you manage to work a self reference into nearly
every article or post? It is quite a talent for such a

Check out the Constitution, dude: security clearance at your job
is not necessary to be president, this being a democracy and all.
Do you work at 7 Eleven where they give you those personality
tests before they let you on the register or something?

Maybe Republicans aren't raising a fuss because they know that
the Clintons can be counted on to provide a neverending stream of
embarassments for Obama. Five will get you ten that Bill will be
caught exposing himself to a hat-check girl at the U.N before the
year is out.
Picking her was the worst decision Obama's made to date, but
she'll be comedy gold for at lest the next year or two.
Ran| 1.14.09 @ 10:07PM
Mr. Hillyer,
My guess is that she doesn't expect to have the assignment very
long and that's why she had agreed to take it. With the
intractable mess out there, it's not a resume enhancer for
anyone. Would one cap one's political career as the foreign
policy "enforcer" of a weak Administration for four (or eight)
years? Why then take it? If it is a stepping stone, then to what?
Something subtle is telegraphed by her agreement - as if she
expects fully that Obama will fail the confidence of the media,
or will fail the Birth Certificate standard - something - and be
off ticket in '12.
On the other hand, perhaps she expect the Republicans to offer up
more weak candidates, thus allowing her to run in 2020... but
that's a long time-frame. Perhaps it's just fodder for book
deals.
As for Hillary at State and what she would undo on our
behalf... your point is well taken. She is far more dangerous to
us than to our enemies.

You would if you could send your scheming hubby around the world
hitting up foreign kleptocrats for money to ensure that their
foreign aid checks don't get held up. She's doing it for the
graft potential not because it furthers her political career.

Hitchens is a joke. You need to check in to why. It has nothing
to do with Hillary -- but with his own personal problems. Hillary
will be one of our most successful SOS if she can keep Obama in
check.

Mr. Hillyer at least raises the correct issues relative to the
other "controversies". If the Richardson coming and going avoids
a swath of corruption, what are the other noticeable pitfalls in
the cabinet, particularly the power spots?
Sec. Gates is clearly a short-termer, or at least no democratic
party future beyond his current role.
The remaining trouble areas seem to be Holder, Daschle and
Clinton. Curiously, Holder seems the least worrisome - sure there
will be policy differences, but most agree he can at least manage
the DOJ w/o danger or catastrophe, and add some measure of
organizational discipline which has faltered lately in W's 2nd
term.
As for Daschle, no personal corruption (discounting whatever his
wife is up to), but enormous policy and waste issues to battle as
socialized health care looms..
As for Sec. Clinton, she's strong and able, but not necessarily
for this position. Besides which, is she also corrupt or
corruptible and incompetent in the areas that matter? I suppose
we'll all find out?
Big Jim| 1.15.09 @ 2:10AM
Clinton will be the most incompetent and downright silly pick to
run the State Dept. in the history of the country. Considering
her ties to Bill & Co., let alone her inexperience and
complete lack of diplomatic experience, there is no way she
should be confirmed. Cons should go after her with all guns
blazing and forget about Geithner who is qualified.
J David| 1.15.09 @ 9:00AM
Michelle Malkin has the inside scoop on Geithner's "innocent
mistake"(Heh!) of a $34,000 oversight, AND IT'S NOT SO
"INNOCENT"! GOP leadership trying to sweep all this under the
rug, just like with the Dragon Lady is flat-out BETRAYAL of the
American people. Hillyer's description, early on, of the coming
nightmare is going to be an understatement.
