W James,
In "normal" times I would agree with you. But these are not normal times. I suspect that 2010 will be very volitile for both parties. The President-Elect and the Democratic Congress may dig themselves a hole so quickly that not even GOP ineptness will come to thier aid.
On the other hand, the GOP is so confused and leaderless right now (IMHO they've been leaderless since 1989) that they wouldn't recognize a political oppurtunity if it hit them on the head.
My hope is this: that the GOP will put a Democratic face on the $2-3 trillion spending spree Obama/Congress are now ginning up. If the "stimulus bills" create a partisan divide the Democrats will be tagged for a continued recession, and double digit across the board inflation. I have little hope the Senate GOP will be able to filibuster any spending bills. That is why it is important in the next 12 months for the GOP to resist "joining hands" with the Dems. If the Democrats want to waste $2 trillion, sink our currency, and begin another era of 1970s Stagflation, let them take the blame.
I can see the GOP winning in huge landslides in 2010 if Obama, Pelosi, and Reid are determined to revisit The New Deal.

JP,
Gingrich was a good leader '95- '96, then he fizzled out in the hurly burly of the late '90s.
Cant we find a guy with a PhD who is of his ability, and not into Tofflerism?
Conservatism doesnt mean governor Moonbeam thinking.
