Panetta as CIA Director

The knock on President Bush is that he made selections based on personal loyalty rather than qualifications, and Barack Obama has earned praise for moving away from this practice. However, it's hard to reconcile that narrative of Obama's appointments with his naming of Leon Panetta -- a key political ally with no relevant experience -- as director of the CIA during a time of war.  Even Dianne Feinstein was caught off guard by the bizzare pick, according to the NY Times: "'My position has consistently been that I believe the agency is best-served by having an intelligence professional in charge at this time,' said Senator Dianne Feinstein who, as chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, would be in charge of Mr. Panetta's confirmation."

This is a joke, right? It's not funny and it really scares the hell out of me.

1. We are not fighting any sort of war anymore. We elected to surrender, and go the route of issuing supeanas and investigating crimes... war is to expensive... time consuming... and above all means that something actually needs to be done. The One has no intention of actually doing anything about terrorists... other than jaw boning and suing them into submission, I suppose.

2. Ruth... please stop being scared. A) it is a useless emotion that saps energy and befuddles the mind. We need folks like you fighting. B) There is nothing that we can do about The One and his regime, now. We are relatively powerless for everything but the most crashingly disastrous policies that the Senate has some shot at stopping. Fretting is a waste... time to man the lines and raise the sails on the new conservative recovery.

That will take time, money, and shoe leather. The first step back will be winning back the Virginia Governorship next year, and perhaps getting back the State Senate as well.

The next step is congress in 2010. For that, we need new and better candidates... committed political party workers, and functioning local political committees...

Fear is for children worried about monsters under the bed, or booga-bears in the closet.

Obama is going to fail. He is either a clueless empty suit, or a deeply corrupt Chicago pol. Either way he has never held a job, run anything but his mouth, or actually stood for much of anything other than self-promotion.

So... fear not. Be prepared. Work hard. Smile... God loves you.

r/John

Let’s see. Panetta knows nothing about sources and methods, the significance of classification caveats and codewords, long-standing technical and budgetary issues associated with covert programs, building and sustaining HUMINT capabilities, history and relationships with foreign services, interrelationships among US intel organizations, or even why it was a bad idea to mention that we were intercepting Osama’s satphone calls. This is hope and change we can believe in, and I believe I’ll have another drink.

Look, John, I don't know who you are but please don't lecture me. I am scared--and just have no desire to be nuked, okay? If you are not the least bit concerned about the direction of our country right now you are either stupid or braindead. Which is it?

My first thought when I heard Leon Panetta was -- "Geez, will this be the Sandy Burglar of the CIA?" What do the Clintons want scrubbed from that bureaucracy? Perhaps a bit of paranoia, but it does make one think Obama wants to politicize the place rather than actually make it work.

jack| 1.6.09 @ 8:16AM

Isnt it more and more obvious with each Obama personel choice? The Clintons either have pics of him with a live boy or dead girl. This is just hilarious. On the other hand he has no experience at anything except speaking and handing out smokes for votes,so he is picking people with political experience and people who have a strong record of supporting their boss. Remember most of these people supported Clinton, guilty of perjury and sexual harrasment, over the good of country and people.

1. Not lecturing... merely salving wounds... And being a tad sarcastic...

2. I lived at and in the direct vicinity to ground Zero... for most of my life. More nukes have been aimed at various parts of Virgina in the DC Metro Area, and in Southside... than most points on the globe. So you will have to forgive my resorting to my old cold war attitude about nukes going off in the front yard...

That begs the question... will we be hit with such a thing anytime in the near future? Possibly... I still live within close proximity of a potential target... though I think that the more pedestrian delivery methods available to madmen and Jihadists would be closer to NYC or Some other commercial port facility. There are lots of issues involved in an atomic device not a ton of which should be gone into here... but suffice it to say the railroad freight car sized device that would have to be delivered limits the options of the deliverers.

And no... Leon Panetta is ill equipped to be running much more than using his private investigators to dig dirt on opponents. Sneaky... underhanded... vile... but not particularly useful for the intelligence world.

The truth is that alert wariness is necessary for dealing with the next four years. The One has been elected. He will take office on January 20th... what will happen will happen.

Peace... John

John, that explains your attitude--you're a New Yorker. I understand now, you guys just can't help it.
