Blago's Senate Appointment

Was there anybody who didn't think Blago would do something like this if given the time? Now he's put the Senate Democrats in the position of refusing to seat an African-American to fill a vacancy left by the only African-American in the Senate. Of course, the Democratic leadership is right not to seat anyone appointed by Blago, because the appointment is tainted. But the Illinois governor does know how to create drama.

But it appears the Senate has no authority to deny him the seat. Plus Bobby Rush added the racial card-grab the popcorn as some say!

Interloper| 12.30.08 @ 4:28PM

Why focus on an experienced Illinois politician's race?

Blago is simply calling prosecutor Sullivan's bluff the only way he can, albeit ineffectively. I suspect Mr. Burris is cleaner than a just shampooed poodle.

ruth| 12.30.08 @ 4:41PM

What a joke!

ncatty| 12.30.08 @ 4:49PM

Can someone tell us why Fitzgerald didn't wait for an actual offer and acceptance to take place before filing the criminal complaint?

VinceP1974| 12.30.08 @ 5:01PM

I love living in Chicago and have to live under this ceaseless corruption.

VinceP1974 | 12.30.08 @ 5:02PM

Neatty: Allegedly the Chicago Tribune was no longer going to withhold on publishing some stories they had about the investigation and by doing so alert Blago to the methods the FBI was using to monitor him.

ruth| 12.30.08 @ 5:07PM

I don't care what the Obama sycophants say, this makes Obama look like garbage. "Birds of a feather flock together."

ncatty| 12.30.08 @ 5:11PM

Thanks Vince, that makes sense.

Jeremiah| 12.30.08 @ 5:12PM

Hilarious. Hilarious.

The crook has cunning.

WendyG| 12.30.08 @ 5:24PM

Haw haw. The Dems do not disappoint!

Is Obama still sunbathing in Hawaii? Chuckle.

ruth| 12.30.08 @ 5:54PM

Yes, Wendy, Mr. 'pec-tacular' is still sunbathing in Hawaii.

WendyG| 12.30.08 @ 6:27PM

>>>Yes, Wendy, Mr. 'pec-tacular' is still sunbathing in Hawaii.'

Of course when Bush exercised the press excoriated him. "Detached" "Crazed" blah blah blah.

we should have left blacks in Africa.

can you say that at Am Spec, or has PC intruded into every nook & cranny?

Interloper| 12.30.08 @ 8:02PM

Yes, Alan, you can say 'we should have left blacks in Africa' on American Spectator. It is pretty much the norm.

Heck, if you were running for the chairmanship of the RNC you could gift a CD with a song saying that and many a Right Winger would praise you for it.

VinceP1974| 12.30.08 @ 8:09PM

Obama is not of the slave heritage. If anything his white-side of the family probably owned slaved and his black side of the family probably sold the slaves to them. It was the Muslims in Africa that ran the black slave trade.

Jeremiah| 12.30.08 @ 8:25PM

Alan Brooks --

Although it's hardly surprising to see you've written something stupid and nasty, writing a racist comment like that is probably unwelcome here by almost anyone with decency and sense.

I've said before. You're a jackass.

ruth| 12.30.08 @ 8:33PM

Interloper's arrogant nastiness reminds me of Bob. Is that you, Bob? I can sense your special charm a mile away.

ruth| 12.30.08 @ 8:35PM

VinceP 1974, you're right about the slave trade in Africa--but you'd never get a liberal to admit it. Just blame whitey, it's easier and the lies fit your agenda.

WendyG| 12.30.08 @ 8:35PM

>>>we should have left blacks in Africa.

This had to have been said with irony.

But where was all the sensitivity toward blacks when Clarence Thomas was being shredded?? MIA.

Mark | 12.30.08 @ 8:55PM

I'm so tired of all the political correctness now days .Time We as Americans start sticking up for the Constitution of this country. Good we have our first black pres.lets make sure he colors inside the lines and don"t send this Great country straight to hell!!!

Ran| 12.30.08 @ 10:24PM

Jeremiah said it perfectly:

Amen.

BREAKING NEWS!!!

The local Public Affairs network in Chicago has just learned that Burris gave campaign contributions to Blagojevich, in return for minority business set-asides for his law firm, and his son's business. Could be as much as $280,000.

Pay-to-Play now combined with Racial Quotas. This is getting better by the hour.

VinceP1974| 12.31.08 @ 9:48AM

Eric: Obama was involved in scores of political payback schemes with his contributors. The press isn't interested.

Interloper| 12.31.08 @ 12:08PM

There is no such thing as minority set asides for law firms. Nor is there any report of Roland Burris being a big contributor to the governor. After all, in his biggest race, Burris and Blago were competitors. Eric, a person can make things up, but he cannot make them true. So, why bother?

ruth| 12.31.08 @ 4:45PM

Interloper, does this corrupt silliness of your filthy Democrat party make you proud?

Katherine| 1.1.09 @ 12:17AM

I join in the disdain for Blagojevich and all the corrupt Chicago crowd. However, this appointment appears to be entirely legal. B. is still the elected Governor of the state, empowered to appoint someone to the vacant Senate seat. On what legal grounds can this appointee be denied? Regardless of what we think of the people involved, in America we have legal processes, and this is the essence and strength of our system.

Interloper| 1.1.09 @ 11:26PM

Exactly, Katherine. The argument against seating Burris lacks a legal basis. There are no grounds for finding him ineligible. To get there, one has to hold Burris responsible for the allegations against Blago. The first problem with that is holding Burris, who is as clean as I thought, responsible for someone else's behavior. The second problem is that Blago has yet to be found incompetent to fill the seat, or, even indicted.

There is nothing occurring here that would take 90 days to analyze either.

Better to seat Burris or negotiate with him to wait to be seated when he is reappointed by a new governor.

truth matters| 1.2.09 @ 4:25AM

Just your average, run of the mill, cesspool Democrat politics.
