I've been asked several times today whether I think a Republican could win a special election for Senate in Illinois. My answer has always been no. But the fact that Harry Reid doesn't want a special election suggests he feels differently and gives me second thoughts.

Gee, let's hand a Senate seat to Caroline Kennedy, give Minnesota to Al Franken, and let Harry Reid appoint Blago's replacement. Then let's overturn Prop 8 . Voters be damned!

"Could" a republican win a special - sure. Would one, maybe - see the comments to Mr. Tabin's post on Rep. Kirk - he'd probably be the best fastest candidate, and the circumstances only help the GOP, as dismal as it presently is here.

Oddly, Obama was likely the only city of Chicago pol universall appealing to the rest of the state. The GOP's hope is the machine puts up a hard lefty from the Cook County machine, instead of one of the few suburban dems. It could happen.

Hey Jim -- Do you think a Republican can become a senator in Illinois?
