David Frum argues that (a) Republicans are a threat to suburban
values, (b) Sarah Palin is Harriet Miers, and (c) Rush Limbaugh
is part of the problem.
(Video via
Hot Air.) Some readers may recall that, a year after
leaving his job as a Bush speechwriter, Frum wrote a
National Review article denouncing several critics of
the Iraq war -- including Pat Buchanan and Robert Novak -- as
"Unpatriotic
Conservatives." Now that the $5-billion-a-week Iraq war has
helped deliver Congress and the White House to Democrats, Frum is
leaving National Review and who knows whom he'll
denounce next? Probably not Barack Obama.
By the way, did I mention that Frum is . . . Canadian?
UPDATE: I guess I should add that, despite his
attempt to cast several of my friends into outer darkness, I
actually like David Frum. His book, How
We Got Here is the definitive history of the 1970s and
eminently readable. But, like several other conservative
intellectuals, Frum seems so demoralized by the denouement of the
Bush presidency that he's not going to let facts stand in the way
of his panic stampede.
Take, for example, Frum's assertion that suburban voter view the
Republican Party as "a threat to their values." Some actual
election results:
Granted, more than five years after "Mission Accomplished" and
with the economy circling the drain, the Democrats made
tremendous inroads, but it takes a lot of effort to look at the
actual vote totals and conclude that suburbanites see the GOP as
a "threat." I repeat: Don't
overthink it.
Yes, he is Canadian and his mom is a very well respected

Maybe he just doesn't get America.

Remind me again of Frum's bona fides. I realize he drafted some
speeches on 43's behalf, of which several cabinet members and
committee members make annotations and edits, but what the hell
has he accomplished that would qualify him as an arbiter of
conservatism?
Seems we have a number of these types running afoot. Perhaps we
should lock Pawlenty, Frum, Parker, Brooks, and the rest in their
own room and let them spin.

I still don't get it: what did Pawlenty do exactly?
Spicy Joker| 11.18.08 @ 1:52AM
David "Axis of Evil" Frum, Ken "Cakewalk" Adelman, and David
Brooks are losers. They're trying to save what's left of their
pathetic careers by scapegoating real conservatives for the mess
that they damn well know was THEIR fault.
Alenda Lux| 11.18.08 @ 3:00AM
Here's my take on it - needless to say I don't agree with Frum or
Spicy Joker.
When it looked like the Iraq war was going to be a success, the
fake and phony conservatives like Frum were going to take credit
for it and expel all the traditional conservatives and foreign
policy realists from the Republican party. Now that the fake and
phony Iraq war conservatives have destroyed the Republican party
and the conservative brand, they want to place the blame on
somebody else.
The reason the fake and phony conservatives stick around is that
the Mainstream Media like the fake and phony conservatives for
obvious reasons. I mean, if you could pick your opponents you
would pick the guys who were in agreement with you and would do
the most damage to the side you oppose. The fake and phony
conservatives fit in perfectly for the purposes the Mainstream
Media have in mind.

Brooks, Frum, Parker, Adleman, Kristol, Barnes, Rubin, etc.,
remind me a lot of the "concern trolls" being noticed and mocked
at places like Ace of Spades HQ, just before the election...

Doesn't anyone get the irony here? The smartest people in the
party say there is a problem so the dumbest say they don't know
what they're talking about. Rich.....
What's happening here is that the anti-intellectuals -- the
social conservatives -- those that pay homage to college dropouts
like Limbaugh and Hannity and to Presidential candidates that
graduate at the bottom of their class -- want stupidity to win.
Give me a break.

Bob, lib troll extraordinaire!
Bob you haven't answered my question from yesterday about taxes
and choices. Is it too intellectual for you?
Bob| 11.18.08 @ 12:11PM
Crusader, leader of the weak minded!
I did answer your question. I believe in choice whether it is in
regards to schools or abortion. I want government out of my life
on social and personal issues. I am consistent on the matter of
choice in all things. It is an inconsistency of the weak minded
to believe otherwise.
Let's get the Republican party back to conservatism and away from
religion whether it be Christianity or secularism.

This might reflect the point of your other post concerning
leftward university profs supporting the donkey party. Columbus
is the hometown of Ohio State U. I work at another university.
The political "debate" on the faculty listserv during the
campaign season was not nuanced & intellectual, but
inflammatory & polemical. Just because people have pieces of
paper hanging on their wall does not magically turn them into
oracles and arbiters of wisdom.
