The Repeal of 1994

If the current numbers hold, Republicans will knocked back down to their pre-1994 levels in the House and Senate. That's not great but it's better than things looked before the election. One wonders if the results on the East Coast persuaded wavering voters in later-voting states to re-elect their GOP senators.

"Repeal"? More like the abandonment of 1994 -- and it happened a decade ago, the omnibus spending package House Republicans rammed through in fall 1998 before their campaign recess. John McCain did not -- repeat, did not -- represent the Spirit of '94.

I never said he did (and have written repeatedly about 1998 as the GOP's jump the shark year). But McCain did preside over the reversal of 1994's gains.

Will Republican spinelessness also be repealed? Will Republicans learn the very lesson McCain himself taught, that a "maverick" Republican is only liked when he is not being a conservative? Will Republicans abandon their fear of bad reviews by the establishment media and use their fillibuster to endlessly confront liberals and comment and describe its deceits and excesses? Newt Gingrich thought he could play with Bill Clinton politically and be bi-partisan. Gingrich was a fool. Have they repealed THAT lesson of 1994?
