By now most of us are probably familiar with the classic over-the-top snark Christopher
Hitchens used to close out his recent Palin-bashing column:
This is what the Republican Party has done to us this year: It
has placed within reach of the Oval Office a woman who is a
religious fanatic and a proud, boastful ignoramus. Those who
despise science and learning are not anti-elitist. They are
morally and intellectually slothful people who are secretly
envious of the educated and the cultured. And those who prate
of spiritual warfare and demons are not just “people of faith”
but theocratic bullies. On Nov. 4, anyone who cares for the
Constitution has a clear duty to repudiate this wickedness and
stupidity.
Over at Contentions Abe Greenwald gives a
good retort:
You’ve been given your mandate, intellectual America! Fight
clerical ignorance by electing a president whose spiritual
mentor preaches that H.I.V. was invented by the U.S.
government. Stand up to bullying stupidity and toxic envy by
casting your vote for the two-decade-long member of Jeremiah
Wright’s “God damn America” Trinity United Church — an
institution that readily supported Louis Farrakhan and that
furnished Hamas-supporters with a forum to spew anti-Israel
fantasies. And don’t forget to demonstrate your love for the
Constitution by putting in the White House a man who laments
the “essential constraints” the document places on the
judiciary’s ability to spread wealth around. Good night, God
bless, yes we can, and Amen.
Whenever Hitchens' name comes up I think about that hilarious
waterboarding stunt he pulled. He wanted to find out for himself
if it was 'torture'. What a wimp. I wish I could have
administered it to him.

Hitchens un-hitched! Again, why does this science-worshiping
atheist judge Palin without very much evidence to support his
conclusions? He's merely offering a gut reaction, not a reasoned
evaluation. I also expect that he isn't smart enough to see the
irony.
BD57| 10.30.08 @ 2:30PM
Unfortunately, Hitchens comes unhinged (unhitched?) whenever he
encounters believers.
This one's a candidate for the "Andrew Sullivan" award.
Tom Paine| 10.30.08 @ 3:42PM
Hitchens made a good point. I don't think what he wrote could
fairly be called Palin "bashing."
He simply pointed out what anyone can plainly see: the woman is
not a good pick for VP. She's weirdly anti-science and
anti-intellectual, and it shows.

TP go pick up your astroturf check from Axelrod.

There are many more Americans who realize the Bible is not only
the Source for truth, but much more reliable than Science.
Many of us who have been abused by the Hitchens' of this world
obey God's Law and listen to His Word.
Evolution is a Theory: Creation is a Fact.
I wish some candidate WOULD take on the Socialist brain-washing
that tells our kids "Science" proves anything.
If we had the courage to teach Creationism in "Science" Classes,
students would see for themselves that there is proof that God
Created the world exactly as the Bible tells us.
Why are Christians relegated to the back of the bus? And why do
so many Christians allow God to be mocked?
I hope Sarah believes the Truth and I think it is time we ended
the Darwinist Brainwashing.
I cringe when some pseudo-intellectual calls the Bible's
authority into question and pray: Father, forgive them for they
KNOW NOT what they do!
theanchoressisright| 10.30.08 @ 8:14PM
dear Ruth:
It is worse than astroturfing. Mocking Sarah in this case is
mocking God.
God loves us and is patient, but when will He decide "Enough is
enough"?
We need politicians who are not afraid to face down the mockers
in the name, the Sacred Name, of The Truth.
And any liberals here, don't give me your tired "Whose truth?" It
is and always will be God's Word, right there for everyone in The
Bible.

The first time I saw Governor Palin grab her infant Trig and hold
him to her heart I knew I would crawl through glass for her. It's
true, I am a sucker for God fearing, pro-life women. Protecting
the most innocent among us defines us as human beings. She is a
special person who actually lives her beliefs. Hitchens is no
threat, he is a piteous lump of a man. Ugh.
Trurl| 10.31.08 @ 12:52AM
As a "science worshiping atheist" myself, I find little to fear
in Sarah's religiosity. People like Hitchens and Dawkins tend to
get tunnel-vision about their personal perceived persecution at
the hands of The Great Other every bit as much as some
fundamentalists have. Obama could very well be the final nail in
the coffin of the great experiment in capitalism that was the
United States of America. If that means putting someone in office
instead that believes in an invisible man who lives in the sky
and grants wishes, that's OK by me. And theanchoressisright is OK
by me too, as along as he doesn't ever decide to strap a bomb to
himself to try and give his convictions a little more, shall we
say, weight.
ruth| 10.31.08 @ 1:29AM
With all due respect, Trurl, when I reflect on the pantheon of
twentieth century atheists several come to mind: Stalin, Hitler,
Mao, Pol Pot. Need I go on? Wasn't that about 100 million dead?
Do you really want to talk about violence perpetrated on behalf
of ideology/religiosity? You are right, though, you have nothing
to fear from us, we stand for the individual, even the most
defenseless one still in the womb.
Trurl| 10.31.08 @ 3:07AM
Ruth, I'm pro-life as well. Why would you assume otherwise? I
don't believe a fetus is imbued with some kind of undefinable
ghost at the very moment of conception. I do believe that it is
at the very least a nascent sentient being unto itself, and as
long as I can't tell you with any certainty when it crosses the
line to what we all would accept as a human unto itself (and no,
neither can you) I much prefer to err on the side of safety and
say that once it's conceived whoever created it has to consider
its rights, suffer (so to speak) the consequences of their
actions and bring it into the world. And don't pretend I can't
play the tit-for-tat game in choosing evil crazy religious world
leaders. Why, I think there's one in Iran right now! He hasn't
matched Hitler's record yet, but he's still just getting going.
Let's not play that game. There are a lot of us out here- people
who don't fit into your pre-defined notions of those with moral
character just because we didn't read a book- we thought it out
for ourselves.
And I know I don't have anything to fear from you. I play in a
Baptist church band every Sunday morning and everyone there is
very nice. I like to help the Christians, as long as they don't
hold any illusions about dunking me. *g*
