Real Clear Politics average that so many of us watch is
really off today, because it still includes an outdated (by
today's polling standards) and out-of-whack Pew Research poll
that shows Obama up by 15 percent. That's eight percentage points
greater than the next-largest margins of any of the other polls.
RCP currently shows an average of 5.9 percent in favor of Obama;
removing the Pew poll lowers the RCP average to 4.7 percent.
That's where RCP is at a disadvantage. It is designed to track
all polls, even those far from the mainstream. By weighing all
poll results equally, it doesn't sufficiently account for most
recent ones.
