I'm not going to pretend to be an expert in the complicated
political system over in Pakistan, and will be reading intensely
over the next days and weeks to try to sort through these election results to get a sense of how
the changes will affect our relationship with the country, how much
cooperation we can expect to receive in fighting terrorism, and,
most importantly, how secure their nuclear weapons are. But it
strikes me as good news that the Islamic religious parties were
routed in the North West Frontier, where the Taliban and Al Qaeda
have found safe havens. This would seem to suggest that to whatever
extent there is anti-Americanism in Pakistan, it hasn't translated
into widespread popular support for radical Islam.
