I think managerial competence is always good and Thompson would be smart to find someone with the skills you outline minus all the baggage. (The reference to Reagan/Ford was not meant to be exact, only to point out that voters don't like the notion of a subdivided presidency.) I would suggest Richard Parsons (who is stepping down from Time Warner and would be available!).
