McCain's campaign is in high spirits today. They
point to this NY Times
account in which Romney doesn't recall his excuse for not
weighing in on the efficacy of the surge while he was governor.
Their point: Romney needs advisors to tell him what to do on
foreign affairs. Romney responds with this
memo citing his support of the Surge but leaves out of course
the "apparently" duel with McCain in a debate in which Romney
appeared to be leaving wiggle room. There was also this strange appearance on ABC Good
Morning America in which he seemed to suggest a "secret" withdrawal
date would be a good idea. But the better news for camp McCain is
this
poll which shows him leading in NH. However, maybe the oddest
Romney comment of the day is his alleged unawareness of the
amount he's kicked into his own campaign war chest. I imagine it
must be jaw dropping and dwarfs the $8M last quarter. That news
will have to wait most likely until after the NH and Iowa votes
when the inevitable "he's trying to buy the election" carping will
be heard.
UPDATE: Another rival camp finds the Romney cluelessness on
the amount he contributed to his campaign too much to bear: "Just
when we thought it couldn't get any worse, Mitt Romney proves just
how utterly ridiculous his campaign has become. The same guy who
claims to be the world's finest manager (which he thinks makes up
for not knowing anything about foreign policy) has lost count of
how many millions he has contributed to his own campaign? I mean,
really. Any shred of credibility Romney had after changing every
position he has ever held is now gone." UPDATE 2:
Jonathan Martin does a smart summary of the Romney reversal
from Bush distancer to Bush embracer. And news media continue to make McCain's
arguments for him -- for free.
