Rudy is back in the news. He has been a frequent
presence on the cable news shows since the Bhutto assassination,
reminding voters of the need for American strength against
terrorists. Banking that Huckabee's gaffes and Romney's bland
cliches are leaving voters concerned he's making a push to
re-establish his presence as the debate turns from religion to
meatier policy issues. His "Freedom"ad released
last week hammers home the theme of determination in the fight
against terrorists. Today he has this
piece out making the case for his own ability to not only
achieve homeland security but close the border. His campaign also
is going on the offense, making the
pitch that his Florida strategy remains entirely viable given
that only 78 delegates will be chosen before Florida and 1039
between Florida and February 5. What would have to happen? Romney
and Huckabee bloody each other and help convince voters neither has
the foreign policy credentials to be president while Thompson fades
after a disappointing finish in Iowa. (So far this seems entirely
plausible.) Then McCain and Rudy duke it out, the latter with
superior resources to go through February 5. Like British foreign
policy of the 19th century it depends on a careful balance of
opposing powers, making sure no rival gets the upper hand. Hey, it
wouldn't be the strangest thing to happen this election cycle.
UPDATE:
Linda Chavez lays out the same case.
