Romney today said the NRA backed him in 2002. I
think this is not correct. In
2002 he said in a debate with Shannon O'Brien "We do have tough
gun laws in Massachusetts; I support them. I won't chip away at
them; I believe they protect us and provide for our safety." I
found it hard to believe the NRA would support someone with that
viewpoint. Indeed, the NRA
grading sheet from 2002 shows no endorsement and gives both he
and his opponent a "B" which is defined for a candidate hasn't held
office as someone " who may have made some statements or taken
positions against the NRA on some issues." I have not received any
response to my inquiry to the Romney camp on this.
