Romney today said the NRA backed him in 2002. I think this is not correct. In 2002 he said in a debate with Shannon O'Brien "We do have tough gun laws in Massachusetts; I support them. I won't chip away at them; I believe they protect us and provide for our safety." I found it hard to believe the NRA would support someone with that viewpoint. Indeed, the NRA grading sheet from 2002 shows no endorsement and gives both he and his opponent a "B" which is defined for a candidate hasn't held office as someone " who may have made some statements or taken positions against the NRA on some issues." I have not received any response to my inquiry to the Romney camp on this.
