Myspace Mom

Wasn't sure if I wanted to weigh in on this, since the little girl who hanged herself is my cousin's granddaughter, but now political columnists and 60 Minutes are taking this up, and they seem to have most of the facts wrong. An attorney friend has seen the FBI report and says the Mother/Neighbor blamed for this little girl's death apparently did not write a single word to the 13-year-old girl, as claimed. She did, however, set up the Myspace account for her underaged daughter, under a teenage boy's alias. All of the nasty words that supposedly drove Megan to suicide were written by teenagers, and the words that supposedly drove her to commit suicide were written by teenagers writing from Ohio, three states away. I think the lesson here is that if you are a parent with an emotionally suspect 13-year-old daughter, probably a good idea to cancel your Internet service. I suspect the Mother/Neighbor will have a hell of a libel suit if the FBI report is correct.
