However, the piece largely focuses on past turmoil and how longtme loyal friends were forced out. A more interesting but still unexplored story is what is wrong with the effort now-- why so lackadaisical, why so amorphous and whether in his heart of hearts Thompson likes the rough and tumble of the campaign well enough to try to win this.
