Michael Barone writes about the Tsongas-Ogonowski
congressional race. He argues that Ogonowski is running a "2007
campaign" while Niki Tsongas is running like it is 2006. I'd
quibble with only one point: I actually do think the 41 percent
George W. Bush won in the Fifth District in 2004 is close to being
the area's generic Republican vote. The GOP just hasn't recruited
serious candidates since Marty Meehan was elected in 1992, so
they've underperformed in congressional races. Most competitive
Republican statewide candidates actually do well there or even
carry the district, including the recently discussed Paul Cellucci
and Mitt Romney.
