This afternoon, I attended a session Mike Huckabee held with
reporters, and he had this to say about Fred Thompson's delaying
his entry into the race, using his own brand of folksiness:
"I think even now his closest supporters are
beginning to question this long period of not pulling the trigger.
The target is only in front of you so long. It's kind of like going
deer hunting. You've got a window of opportunity to take a shot.
You can hesitate and hope for a better one. And ultimately you
might get it. But sometimes if you don't shoot that deer, he's
gone."
Huckabee also suggested that Fred's honeymoon will be over once he
jumps in:
"One of the things that will happen when he
actually gets in the race is that there will be much more intense
scrutiny on Fred than there is now. I mean, he's thus far been able
to sort of walk above the ground and not have to really answer any
of the hard questions or get into the policy issues. Go into a
room, wave at folks, and they're happy to see him. But when you run
for president, it's a very intense process, as I will tell you.
It's a 20 hour a day, 7 day a week proposition and it's relentless
in answering questions…"
