My interviews with two of Mitt Romney's more
articulate and effect supporters --Vin Weber and
Wendy Long -- are out
today. They reveal the underlying message of Romney's campaign:
conservative ideology coupled with executive experience. Just as
Romney himself did in an
interview with the Washington Examiner, they both throw some
sharp elbows Thompson's way. McCain thought it necessary to try to
knock out Romney; similarly Romney now may be looking to shove
Thompson out of the way in order to take on frontrunner Giuliani.
If Thompson starts responding and reporters start getting "helpful"
reminders about Romney's moderate record as Governor of
Massachusetts we'll know Romney has landed a punch. As for
Giuliani, he is happy to talk about health care this week and let
his rivals rough each other up.
