Geoffrey Holder, R.I.P.

By on 10.7.14 | 12:20PM

Actor Geoffrey Holder passed away on Sunday after a bout with pneumonia. He was 84.

Although not a household name, most people will probably remember him as the villain in the James Bond movie Live and Let Die, the first Bond movie featuring Roger Moore as 007.

I remember him watching Saturday morning cartoons in the late 1970's and early 1980's and there he was, The UnCola Man, pitching 7Up. I don't watch Saturday morning cartoons anymore, but I have to imagine soda commercials are verboten what with Michelle Obama's anti-obesity campaign. But what I remember about the commercials wasn't the cool, crisp taste of 7Up, but rather Holder's cool, crisp voice. It was kind of voice that could narrate a technical manual and make it sound compelling. Holder would end each commercial with a laugh. He also wore that white hat.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s LA Home Tagged With “Obama Drone” Posters

By on 10.7.14 | 11:45AM

After spending nearly a decade bemoaning the cultural degredation of the American continent, Gwyneth Paltrow has finally returned to Los Angeles, perhaps to mend her broken heart in the wake of her "conscious uncoupling" from Coldplay frontman Chris Martin (who has since moved on to this blogger's girl crush, Jennifer Lawrence). America, unfortunately, has not been equally welcoming to Gwyneth Paltrow.

This weekend, the founder will host a fundraiser, dinner and reception with President Obama to raise money for the Democratic National Committee. The author and actress, who prides herself on being our generation's Martha Stewart (though without the homemaking success or the felony arrest record), will probably hire out all aspects of the party planning process, including the invitations, which cost between $1,000 and $32,400 to obtain. And, according to Radar Online, at least one of her neighbors, controversial LA guerilla artist "SABO," is already ruining her aesthetic

This isn’t Gwyneth Paltrow’s year.

Letter from Obama Read at Mosque of Oklahoma Beheader

By on 10.6.14 | 8:57PM

Today on the main site, I have an article up about President Obama's silence concerning Colleen Hufford, the woman beheaded by Muslim convert Alton Nolen on September 25th.

Well, it seems that President Obama has seen to it that a letter of his was read aloud to the mosque that Nolen attended. Obama praises the mosque for its work following the tornado in Moore, Oklahoma last year.

Somehow I don't think the Hufford family has received that belated letter of condelence from Obama.

I guess Obama once again didn't read the optics of situation.

Ben Affleck: “We’ve Killed More Muslims Than They’ve Killed Us.”

By on 10.6.14 | 4:04PM

There has been a great deal of discussion about the exchange between actor/director Ben Affleck and Bill Maher over Islam on his HBO program over the weekend. Although Maher took part in the discussion, the main conflict was between Affleck and neuroscientist and Athiest Sam Harris. Like Maher, Harris doesn't have much use for any religion. But, as with Maher, he doesn't sugarcoat the problems within Islam and the threat they represent to other Muslims and the West.

What got Affleck going was Harris' assertion that liberals have failed us on Islamic theocracy. Affleck responded by questioning Harris' credentials and characterizing his position as "gross and racist" and an "ugly thing to say."

Dallas Ebola Apartment Available to Rent

on 10.6.14 | 3:48PM

This morning, the CDC declared victory over Dallas's Ebola outbreak, noting that they've managed to track down and quarantine everyone the Dallas Ebola patient might have had contact with while he was contagious with the disease. The several Ebola scares from the weekend have all cleared, and the one Ebola patient who "woke from the dead" after being placed in a body bag, appears to have never been dead in the first place. So unless you're planning a vacation to Liberia or trying to bring about the Zombie Apocalypse, your concerns about bleeding from your eyes from a deadly foreign virus can be somewhat abated.

And, if you're looking for a snappy place to live in the greater Dallas area, you may also be just in time to snag a cheap rental. The "quarantine apartment," where Thomas Eric Duncan rode out the first wave of his Ebola in style is now squeaky clean and ready for a new inhabitant, NBC News DFW tweets.

Joe Biden Calls UAE Prince to Apologize for Being Joe Biden

By on 10.6.14 | 12:54PM

President Obama recently collected a loose coalition of Arab states in support of his anti-ISIS bombing campaign in Iraq. Unfortunately for the administration, however, while they may have considered the typical pitfalls to air operations over the Middle East, they failed to consider the cost of deploying their nearest diplomatic weapon: Vice President Joe Biden.

After noting that his own job was something of a "bitch" to manage on Thursday, the Vice President apparently went on a short tirade against several key coalition partners, accusing Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the UAE of funding and arming extremist groups linked to Al Qaeda. Because if there was ever a time to call out friendly Arab nations for their less-than-clandestine support of radical Islamic lunatics hell bent on destroying the last remaining vestiges of civilization on the Arab penninsula, it's when you're reliant on them to call yourself a "global response" to jihad.

Naomi Wolf Went Off The Deep End Long Ago

By on 10.6.14 | 12:43PM

Over the weekend, Naomi Wolf made a series of bizarre claims on her Facebook page. The Pullitzer Prize winning author claimed the ISIS beheadings were staged by the U.S. military and that James Foley, Steven Sotloff, David Haines, Allan Henning and their families were portrayed by actors. She also claimed that ISIS is funded by the U.S., Israel and Saudi Arabia and that U.S. troops were being sent to Africa to bring Ebola back to the United States. For good measure, she also said the Scottish Referendum results were faked. Following a social media backlash, Wolf subsequently deleted the post, but later wrote to say that she stood by what she had said.

Honestly, I'm surprised she isn't claiming the Tigers and Angels threw the ALDS.

Michelle Obama Abandons Dems Over a Letter About Potatoes

By on 10.6.14 | 11:46AM

Now, while I'm lucky enough to have my reality television viewing peppered with political commercials featuring Michelle Obama shilling for hapless Illinois governor Pat Quinn, most Americans will be spared the First Lady's electioneering messages. Michelle Obama will skip "helping" key Congressional Democrats in their quest to retain their seats in 2014 because she is unsatisfied with their level of commitment to her national junk food containment process.

Apparently, Senate Democrats didn't do enough to support the First Lady's "Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act" of 2010, her signature issue and legislation, which all but banned junk food from children's lives, as though the Federal government saw no irony in actually taking candy from babies, and the legislative loss been a thorn in the First Lady's side for four years. And then there's the thing about how Democrats weren't sufficiently opposed white potatoes

Pennsylvania Legislator: Victims Over Mumia

By on 10.6.14 | 10:55AM

Pennsylvania State Representative Mike Vereb, a former police officer whose partner died in his arms, has had enough.

The invitation to convicted cop-killer Mumia Abu-Jamal to deliver a commencement to Vermont’s Goddard College speech via video has launched a welcome legislative backlash. Vereb, a Montgomery County Republican (suburban Philadelphia) has stepped up to the task.

Orioles & Royals Sweep Their Way to ALCS

By on 10.6.14 | 12:02AM

The Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals will face off in the American League Championship Series.

The O's and Royals swept their respective ALDS against the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels.

The Orioles beat the Tigers 2-1 in Detroit. I missed a good part of the game, but arrived at a critical juncture in the sixth inning. Tigers catcher Alex Avila was taken out of the game after sustaining a concussion after being hit on a swing by Steve Pearce. Avila has had several concussions and cannot help but wonder if he might have to retire prematurely. No sooner than backup catcher Bryan Holaday came into the game, Adam Jones singled and Nelson Cruz hit an opposite field HR off David Price to give the Orioles a 2-0 lead. The Tigers rallied in the ninth with Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez (no relation) hitting back to back doubles off Orioles closer Zac Britton. But after striking out Holaday, O's manager Buck Showalter had Britton intentionally walk Nick Castellanos. The move paid off as pinch hitter Hernan Perez hit into a game ending double play.
