Giuliani in 2000

Hotline writes:

We all know what happened the last time Giuliani faced bad press about his family in the midst of a heated campaign. He quit. What he learned in '00 SEN will determine how he responds to new reports about strained relations with his kids. And that response could say lots about the GOP frontrunner's WH'08 prospects.

Say what you want about Giuliani, maybe he's not your kind of guy, but let's get one thing straight: when he dropped out of the Senate race in 2000, he had cancer! Cancer! For anyone who has ever had a friend or family member undergo treatment for prostate cancer you know how psychologically, physically, and emotionally draining it is. It's not surprising that Giuliani would conclude that he couldn't get treated, still serve as mayor, and run a tough campaign all at the same time. Besides, the bad press about his family didn't stop once he bailed out of the race, because he was still mayor of the city with the largest media market in the world. Okay if you want to say that his family troubles played a role, but to completely overlook the fact that he had cancer is pretty callous. As for whether he'll quit now because of bad press about his family, I'd say it's highly unlikely. Giuliani clearly thought long and hard about running for president, and he knew that the added publicity would draw attention to his family troubles. If he wasn't prepared to deal with it, he would not have run. Giuliani is not one to back down from challenges, whether it was taking on the mob as prosecutor or fighting crime as mayor. He only backed down once. And at the time, he had a potentially life threatening illness.
