My wife is a centrist Democrat. (Please, no Matalin-Carville
jokes.) She was really enthusiastic about John Edwards in 2004, and
is completely appalled by his
current self-reinvention. It's not just that he's moving
leftward; it's that the shift reeks of political opportunism.
Obviously a woman who regularly talks about politics with her
right-libertarian husband isn't the typical Democratic primary
voter, but her reaction does make me wonder how many Edwards '04
supporters are going to abandon him now that he's shedding the
Southern moderate image.
