Thoughts on the USOC Dropping Boston’s Bid for the 2024 Olympics

By on 7.27.15 | 8:05PM

Just over six months after the U.S. Olympic Committee had picked Boston to submit a bid to the IOC for the 2024 Olympics, the USOC has now dropped Boston's bid for the 33rd Olympiad.

I had mixed feelings about the bid at the time of the announcement. While I would have loved to see Olympic baseball at Fenway Park, I was equally afraid this would be our new Big Dig. Indeed, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh called a press conference earlier today and announced he would not sign a contract that would have made the city responsible for any financial shortfall arising from the Olympics. This effectively ended Boston's bid right then and there.

Obama Calls Ethiopian Government ‘Democratically Elected’; Its Parliament Has No Opposition Members

By on 7.27.15 | 5:16PM

In a speech President Obama delivered in the presence of Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, he twice referred to Ethiopia’s government as “democratically elected” despite the fact its parliament has no opposition members.

Desalegn leads the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), a coalition of left-wing parties, and has been in office since August 2012. Last May, the EPRDF won all 546 seats in national elections. Prior to the election, the opposition held a grand total of one seat, which the EPRDF regained. Needless to say, Freedom House classifies Ethiopia as “unfree”

Bernie Sanders Isn’t Socialist Enough for Socialists

By on 7.27.15 | 4:34PM

Apparently, in politics, you can never make everyone happy.

Bernie Sanders has all the traditional marks of a socialist. He's very handsy with other people's money, he lacks a basic understanding of both economics and combs, and he calls himself a socialist. He's not trying to hide that he's actively supportive of wealth redistribution, extensive government safety nets, welfare agreements, free college tuition, free housing, free jobs and free love (and, free religion and free guns, but that's usually where liberal coverage stops). Unfortunately for one sad socialist, though, writing at POLITICO, Bernie just isn't perfect

He is, to wit, a SINO.

Obama Misses the Mark Relating to Kenyans

By on 7.27.15 | 3:34PM

At a news conference on Saturday in Kenya, President Barak Obama sat Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, in the corner and gave him a stern talking to — about LGBT rights.

During the speech, Obama equated LGBT rights to legalized racism. As reported by CNN:

"When you start treating people differently not because of any harm they are doing to anybody, but because they are different, that's the path whereby freedoms begin to erode," Obama said at a joint press conference with the Kenyan leader in Nairobi. "And bad things happen.”…

…"And when a government gets in a habit of people treating people differently, those habits can spread," Obama continued. "As an African-American, I am painfully aware of what happens when people are treated differently under the law."

Needless to say Kenyatta wasn’t too thrilled with the idea of Obama telling him how to run his country, and replied as follows:

Hillary Clinton Would Like You to Vote for Her Ovaries

By on 7.27.15 | 3:25PM

Last week, before she lost everyone in the news media to Bernie Sanders (seriously, did anyone see Andrea Mitchell admitting that the private email server was for nothing more than to escape oversight - and complaining about lack of media coverage?), Hillary Clinton was trying to lay out a case for her election.

She listed the regular stuff, sure - she supports gay marriage (kind of moot, but oh, well), she's great at foreign policy, she wants everyone to have a fair shake, she's the champion of the middle class - but she also threw in a curveball, quite literally, that we hadn't yet seen this cycle. As the Democrats jump ship from an old white woman to congregate towards yet anothter old, white male, she reminded her amassed supporters that it's very important to vote for Hillary Clinton - because she's got all the requisite ladyparts.

Huckabee Stands Ground as Obama & Hillary Criticize Iran Holocaust Comments

By on 7.27.15 | 3:19PM

Mike Huckabee isn’t backing down in the wake of criticism from both President Obama and Hillary Clinton over his comments that the Iran nuclear deal would “march Israel to the door of the oven.”

While visiting Ethiopia, Obama said that Huckabee was only try to “get attention” and that his comments were “ridiculous if they weren’t so sad.”

Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton declared she was “really offended personally” by Huckabee’s comments. Hillary went on to say, “But this steps over the line and it should be repudiated by every person of good faith and concern about the necessity to keep our political dialogue on the facts and within suitable boundaries.”

McConnell’s Highway Bill Highway Robbery

By on 7.27.15 | 11:59AM

Before I start into the GOP-on-GOP war that took place last night while I was zoning out watching a David Crosby-lookalike save puppies on Animal Planet, I want to say that I am, for starters, whole-heartedly opposed to the feel-good, get-it-off-our-plate legislative approach some of our elected officials occasionally take with hotbutton issues. Last night, in a haste to get something on the record, Republican Senators attached a doomed-to-fail amendment to "defund" Planned Parenthood to the same highway bill I'm about to discuss, claiming that they were "working hard" to put an end to baby parts trafficking in this honorable country.

They weren't. They were, as one friend termed it, engaging in "failure theater," the practice of doing something, doomed to fail, just so they can claim to have done something about it. See also, shutting down the government over Obamacare. This happened last night, it got a bunch of people riled up, and all it did was boost a lagging Presidential candidate's poll numbers briefly in an early caucus state.

Reds Trade Johnny Cueto to Kansas City

By on 7.26.15 | 5:00PM

Let the Reds firesale begin.

Cincinnati has traded its ace Johnny Cueto to the Kansas City Royals for three left-handed pitchers - Brandon Finnegan, Cody Reed and John Lamb.

Cueto has spent his entire MLB career in the Reds' organization signing with the club in 2004. He made his MLB debut in 2008. Cueto's best season took place last year when he won 20 games, led the NL in strikeouts with 242 and finished runner up in NL Cy Young balloting to Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers. In 2015, Cueto went 7-6 with a 2.42 ERA with a medicore Reds team.

The Royals are currently leading the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central by 6 1/2 games. What is remarkable is that the Royals don't really have an ace. Cueto's former Reds teammate Edinson Volquez is the Royals' best starter with a 9-5 record with a 3.15 ERA. But while Jeremy Guthrie, Chris Young and Danny Duffy are serviceable they do not strike fear into the hearts of hitters. Cueto does so it cannot hurt the Royals to acquire an ace. Perhaps Cueto can also be a positive influence on Yordano Ventura.

Huckabee: Obama Marching Israel to the Door of the Oven

By on 7.26.15 | 2:41PM

Mike Huckabee invoked the Holocaust when speaking about Iran's nuclear deal yesterday.

This president’s foreign policy is the most feckless in American history. It is so naive that he would trust the Iranians. By doing so, he will take the Israelis and march them to the door of the oven. This is the most idiotic thing, this Iran deal. It should be rejected by both Democrats and Republicans in Congress and by the American people. I read the whole deal. We gave away the whole store. It’s got to be stopped.
