If I might call your attention away from the matter of Anna Nicole's baby's paternity to another topic of somewhat lesser importance: It was reported recently that students in a Christian elementary school in Rockford, Illinois have been receiving instruction from textbooks that describe Muslims as donkeys and Jews as repugnant apes. This is not simply a case of infantile name-calling, the textbook authors -- who received funding from the Vatican -- truly believe that Muslims are of the family Equus asinus and Jews are a subspecies of Afropithecus.
Couldn't happen, right? Not here anyway.
Well, what if I told you I was in fact describing a private school in England, and the textbooks -- generously funded by the Saudi Ministry of Education -- referred to Christians as pigs and Jews as apes. That you probably would believe. And you would be right.
The institute in question is the King Fahd Academy in Acton, England. Its principal, Dr Sumtaya Alyusuf, acknowledged that the school uses the controversial textbooks -- which, by the way, also teach that non-Muslims will burn in eternal hellfire -- but she has obstinately refused to withdraw the texts on the grounds that the controversial passages are no longer taught.
News of the reprehensible texts did not sneak out until a former teacher and Muslim convert filed suit for wrongful dismissal, this after he was sacked for reporting widespread cheating on national exams. Shortly before his dismissal, Colin Cook, one of the few instructors at the school who spoke English, had questioned whether the school's curriculum complied with British law. "This is not England," he was told. "It is Saudi Arabia."
Certainly it seems like Saudi Arabia. The Evening Standard last week reported that, "Pupils [at King Fahd Academy] have allegedly been heard saying they want to 'kill Americans,' praising 9/11 and idolizing Osama bin Laden as their 'hero.'"
This comes as no surprise to many of us. America's oil-besotted allies the Saudis have never been content to indoctrinate their own subjects with Wahabbi doctrine, but insist on exporting hate via their globe-trotting imams and the Saudi-funded textbooks of impressionable school children. As for what else is contained in those books, one 2003 study conducted by two Saudis found that the Kingdom's religious studies curriculum "encourages violence toward others, and misguides the pupils into believing that in order to safeguard their own religion, they must violently repress and even physically eliminate the 'other.'" Last year Freedom House published a detailed report on Saudi-funded textbooks, a report exceptional for the way in which it was ignored by government and academic officials.
The report notes that the Wahabbist ideology of hate is "introduced in a religion textbook in the first grade and reinforced and developed in following years of the public education system, culminating in the twelfth grade, where a text instructs students that it is a religious obligation to wage militant jihad against infidels in order to 'spread the faith.'" (You may recall that 15 of the 19 9/11 hijackers received this kind of education in Saudi Arabia.)
THERE ARE A NUMBER of important issues involved here: multiculturalism, free speech, and the freedom and integrity of private religious schools, all aligned against the British government's determination to outlaw hate speech and to protect its citizens from British Muslims radicalized in Pakistani (and Acton) madrassas which seem to double as terrorist recruitment centers.
Yet this is one of those hard cases where I have little sympathy for either side. For decades European governments have supported unlimited immigration from Muslim countries, encouraging immigrants to retain their primitive desert Islamic culture, and all in the interest of cheap labor, and an ever-growing pool of taxpayers to help fund the mammoth European welfare state. Many of these immigrants view Europe as simply one vast labor market, a place to get rich quick. The same is happening in the U.S. where Mexican and South American immigrants see North America as a rich job market, and have no interest in becoming assimilated into American culture, in learning U.S. history, or sharing in America's heritage. For many their loyalty remains with those countries south of the border.
When Dr. Alyusuf told a reporter that, "We teach Islam and it is important for our students to assert their identity," she meant, of course, their Islamic identity, which for Muslims has always superseded national identity. Indeed Muslim immigrants seldom have any intention of becoming British in any meaningful way -- a culture they find decadent and corrupt, peopled with donkeys and swine. Meanwhile European governments and academia continue to facilitate this separateness and insularity under the guise of diversity and multiculturalism.
The British education ministry may in this instance step in and force the school to toss out the controversial textbooks, but there is no guarantee that the teachers will not continue to indoctrinate their students in radical Islam. Meanwhile non-Arab speaking British authorities cannot hope to know what students are actually being taught. For all we know students are being told that the father of Anna Nicole's baby is one of this website's contributors.
