A Further Perspective

Democrats (Heart) Socialism

Gallup bone-chillingly confirms what the party of government truly fancies.

On  the strength of a capitalist economic system, America created a material standard of living for the world to envy while providing its citizens with high levels of personal freedom. But today capitalism, and attendant freedom, are being systematically dismantled in America (and being depth-charged in Europe), while understanding and appreciation of these things are receding. Gallup provides proof of this, and confirms conservatives’ fears and suspicions.

Loyal elves in the media wing of the Democratic Party establishment — aka the mainstream media — hyperventilate when Barack Obama is identified as a socialist, or the Democratic Party is accused of promoting socialist policies. “Vile and unfair accusations,” they wail, before retiring to their fainting couches.

But if a survey released last week by Gallup is any indication, it’s hard to see what all the indignation is about. A majority of people — 53 percent — who describe themselves as Democrats or leaning Democrat, admit to Gallup’s pulse takers that they have a positive image of socialism. Only two percent more — 55 — say they are positive about capitalism. A robust 75 percent of Democrats say they have a positive image of the federal government.

These numbers should not surprise anyone who has talked to a Democrat over the last couple of decades. A majority of the political party currently in the ascendancy in America holds a positive view of an economic system that has been tried countless times in countless places, has never delivered prosperity, but has always diminished personal and economic freedom.

There is, as one would expect, a significant partisan divide in voters’ views about capitalism and socialism. But even here the numbers are disquieting. Of those who identify themselves as Republican or leaning Republican, 72 percent say they have a positive image of capitalism. Could it possibly be that more than a quarter of the party of the bourgeoisie doesn’t fancy capitalism? A surprising 23 percent of Republicans tell Gallup they have a positive view of socialism.

Again, surprise is not in order. After several decades of left-wing indoctrination in lieu of education in the nation’s schools and universities, it would be more surprising if there were little support for an economic system, the principle products of which, in practice rather than theory, are poverty and tyranny. What you don’t know can hurt you.

In the same survey, Gallup probed attitudes toward other institutions. The numbers suggest that while a significant fraction of Americans have a positive view of socialism, they have no understanding of how it works. The majority pro-socialist Democrats, when asked about small business, free enterprise, and entrepreneurs, say they approve of these things by 94, 88, and 84 percent, just slightly smaller numbers than Republicans.

Say what? That’s right. The same group, 53 percent of which hearts socialism, also says it approves of capitalism by 88 percent. Tilt! This strongly suggests that an unknown but large percentage of this group has no idea how either economic system works. It also easily explains the high level of support for our current president (54 percent job approval in the latest Rasmussen) who has demonstrated clearly and repeatedly that he not only doesn’t know how wealth is created, but doesn’t care, so long as his statist and class envy policies are adopted. He also says he respects capitalism and American business, which his tax and regulatory policies are undoing at an alarming rate. Fewer and fewer Americans see the blatant inconsistency between Obama the rhetorical capitalist and Obama the policy statist.

Americans are used to and take for granted lives of material plenty, including but not limited to automobiles, comfortable housing, AC in the summer and heat in the winter, markets bursting with affordable food, pain-free dentistry, ample and affordable clothing, and frippery such a cable television, all enjoyed in safety behind the strongest military shield the world has ever seen. When these things become increasingly dear, or disappear from the scene altogether, many will have no idea how this sorry state of affairs came about. Those charmed by the socialist delusion and who are obsessed with redistributing wealth in a more “fair” way never seem to wonder where the wealth came from in the first place.

I was born when America was just shaking free of the grip of the Great Depression and was gearing up to kick some fascist butt. Attitudes like those recently parsed by Gallup make me fear that I may die as a member of the European Union. Let us pray the American eagle is not replaced by a gerbil approved in Brussels.

Socialism is understood by those who have never lived under it to mean "You can have everything you want, the instant you want it, and somebody else will pay." After living in Socialist Kanukistan for the past 14 years, I can advise that socialism in fact means "You can only have everything you want if you buy it in the States; nevertheless, YOU will pay for promises of jam tomorrow, jam yesterday, but never jam today." There is a really good reason why Canada, a country bigger than the USA, has 10% of the population of the USA and 80% of that population lives within 2 hours drive of the USA. Before you champion socialism, you ought to come up here and live under it for five or six years.

Taxguy| 12.7.12 @ 7:25AM

Why would it take five or six years?

GobBluthe| 12.7.12 @ 7:41AM

I don't think the reason 80% of Canada's population lives within 2 hours of the US border has to do with economic systems if the 20th century.
Canada ranks higher of the OECD Index of Economic Freedom and thanks to the unsound money policies of the American Fed has a higher standard of living.

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 7:59AM

That's ridiculous - most of Northern Canada is comparable in climate to Siberia - that's why the Canadian population hugs the U.S. Border - better climate. Quite a stretch to prove your ideology, I'd say... LOL
You are wrong overall, of course. Corporations don't give anyone anything that you want - they supply what they make the most profit on. Period.
However, Capitalism softened by some social programs does NOT mean we are socialist, nor want to be.
The Robber Baron Age where Rockefeller, JP Morgan, Vanderbilt and Carnegie had all the wealth in the country was an example of true capitalism (Laissez-faire, "anything goes") - very low wages, no benefits, no safety regulation of anything, child labor, 12 hour days, 7 days a week, no vacations. Horrible working conditions - and America REJECTED pure Capitalism. By softening Capitalism with Social programs to care for the people (not Socialism), Capitalism survived.
Otherwise, capitalism would have died a long time ago.
Get with the program and realize the world you enjoy is a combination of both... and No one should want total Capitalism or Socialism.

Doctor Right| 12.7.12 @ 8:05AM

You have a child's understanding of history, economics, and politics.

Are you even out of high school?

Jacob McCandles| 12.7.12 @ 8:49AM

Doc- unfortunately even graduating from a 4 year university leaves one with a child's understanding of these things. Only about 1/5 of our population has half a clue about capitalism or the constitution. I'm trying to imagine a scenario that ends well here, but I cannot.

Anthony| 12.7.12 @ 9:17AM

Unfortunately DR Purp probabaly is out of high school, and he has his dogeared copy of Howard Zinn's American History to prove it.

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 9:52AM

Typical right-wing dogmatic view ... you don't agree, so I must be uneducated.
Poor brainwashed fool. Nevertheless, YOU lost, so enjoy it my way for a few decades now.

Jacob McCandles| 12.7.12 @ 10:59AM

Maybe you are highly educated. Hold a degree from Ivy league...no matter. The words you put together still make you an ignorant fool.

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 12:57PM

Jacob - I just consider the source of the evaluation - which is sorely lacking in modern knowledge.

Doctor Right| 12.7.12 @ 11:24AM

Wrong.

I don't agree AND you are uneducated...or, under-educated, to say the least.

That's because NOTHING you say has any substance. You spout meaningless talking points with conviction and assume that makes them true.

You're a complete cypher for left-wing dogma. There's not one thing you've said that ISN'T a total cliche'...and like most people who do nothing but spout cliches', you're utterly unaware of how silly you sound.

You don't even know what you don't know.

So yes...you ARE under-educated.

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 12:59PM

What's a talking point? Can I make up my own?
Do you?
I'll bet my education and knowledge against yours anyday, Dr Dum-Dum.

But you won't take that bet would you?

Grzmlyk| 12.7.12 @ 4:18PM

I think you mean "I'll bet my INDOCTRINATION and BELIEFS against yours anyday" (sic).

An original thought has never sullied your pristine, propaganda-marinated brain - well, beyond gratifying your own desires, of course - scratching the old limbic itch. And I'm guessing you spend an inordinate amount of time looking in mirrors (both actual and and the MSNBC variety), don't you?

I can certainly see that you've memorized socialist doctrine.

But none of that really makes you smart, does it? I mean, the highest expression of your brilliance is being a troll among people you think are inferior to you? Are we to admire the 7th grader who throws rocks at what he thinks is the kindergarten class? This proves your bona fides? How?

You are not only an ignorant tool, you are a bigoted piece caca doo doo with nothing going for you but a sense of entitlement and your voracious, bottomeless need to stroke yourself - in every way.

But we both know that, underneath the posturing, you know you're a piece of shit, don't you? That's why you express yourself with nothing but hatred. Which, of course, makes you a liberal in good standing. Up is down, in is out, good is bad and morality is immoral.

Keep it coming! Seriously, I enjoy you. You are an excellent specimen; in another time, you'd be wearing a hood and burning crosses on the lawns of people you don't like. We already know you want to lynch us.

You never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity to be a mensch.

Stan Redmond| 12.9.12 @ 3:02PM

That's just what Stalin said.

SilkyWiley| 12.14.12 @ 11:14AM

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 9:53AM

Endless? 12 years? Get real.

GobBluthe| 12.7.12 @ 1:39PM

Bailout culture hasn't ended. It has gotten only bigger.

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 9:53AM

Where in the hell does that comment come from? What are you talking about?

Bob Grant| 12.7.12 @ 9:53AM

Purp,

Anti trust laws put and end to robber barons, not social programs.

ANTI TRUST LAW IS NOT SOCIALISM.

GOT IT???

RCV| 12.7.12 @ 11:53AM

I happy to say that we agree on something, Mr. Grant.

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 1:27PM

I never said social programs ended the Robber Barons Era. I commend you on knowing that bit of history ... It was Teddy Roosevelt, a Progressive Republican that ended the Robber Barons for good. And, yes, with the Anti-Trust laws ... very good.

What I was saying is that after the Robber Baron Era and it's fallout, Americans wanted better living standards and a better quality of life.

What followed was the FDA, Child Labor laws, Henry Ford providing a good wage for his workers, Unionization of the work force, and so much more that created the Middle Class.

Since Ronald Reagan, the GOP has been trying to dismantle it all for the wealthy to regain Robber Baron status. But they've been found out and now stopped.

Bob Grant| 12.7.12 @ 5:02PM

Purp,

You and I have a fundamental disagreement on how to remedy flaws of capitalism.

You believe implementing socialist programs, thus eroding capitalism, I believe in simple, specific regulation.

You, sir, want to do away with it!

Be a man and represent who you really are.

If a corporation makes a product no one wants, then they don't make a profit and go out of business. The government on the other hand can demand that people act in certain ways, whether they want to or not, under penalty of "law". You really don't need to know any more than this to understand how wrong you are.

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 1:30PM

Nice fallacy - but when you're talking non-necessities, you're right.

When it comes to necessities, they provide what they want whether you like it or not ... for example, 92% of all milk production in this country is by 2 Corporations, using many brand names. Not much competition and your choices are therefore limited. Take 'em or leave 'em.

Terrible Ted| 12.9.12 @ 8:01AM

With government, everything becomes a necessity. Roads, electricity, health insurance, unions, food quality, energy deprivation, education, postal service, Big Bird, news, PSAs (anyone notice they're endless these days?), transportation, equality of outcomes, currency manipulation, GE, (so called) diversity, art, inane research, parks, student loans, bridges, phones...

What BS, but typically so! The indigents which necessitates governmental socialistic welfare programs are stupid, lazy and worthless. They populate the world with their bastards simply because they are so stupid that they do not have the brain cells to contribute to society in general. Hence sleezy politicians [mostly of the Democratic variety] selfishly game the political system to redistribute the wealth/income of producers to these indigents through taxiation. Only when/if our society wakes up from the destruction of these sleezeballs and begins to reverse [through birth limitations, tax surcharges for additional dependent-children, decreasing/elimination of governmental welfare, etc] their legalized thefts will there ever be hope for survival!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grzmlyk| 12.7.12 @ 3:10PM

Gee, you haven't missed one incorrect bromide the propaganda institutions have given you.

You've failed nicely.

Of course you believe YOU deserve more than the other guy. But you're one of the elites, right? All you have to do is run your mouth and you purchase absolution - you can behave with as much hate, greed, contempt, sloth, ignorance and bigotry as you want. You're in the clear. You're VIRTUOUS.

Amazing how you all think you're so smart and good and compassionate - and you're 100% wrong about everything. Yourselves, first off. No doubt you think you're a wonderful human being - after all, you regurgitate all the things the cool professors say.

But you are in fact scum.

Von Mises Jr| 12.7.12 @ 8:47AM

I have been to Canada many times, Appleby. My last visit was to Quebec where I met a lovely young couple from Ontario. They bring clarity to Mr. Thornberry's conundrum. The answer to these statistical anomalies is you cannot chose logically among what you don't understand.

I asked the couple about health care and the wife said she has free health care. I asked how long it took to see a doctor and she said six weeks to six months depending on the situation. She said that she never visited the United States since if you got sick or had an accident, you would be bankrupted. So her understanding was that not getting care for six weeks to six months was great health care coverage, but in America where a little illegal slut made pregnant by my liberal relative's son had the baby for free although the father's family is well off.

A Quebecer was more honest or logical when he told me that people used apps like WebMD since the government workers caused 8-16 hour queues in the ER to get a Doctor's Note so they could take the week off.

Our Republican Party in DC does not demonstrate conservativism. So how could the people make a choice between black and white, when the colors they see are black and dark grey?

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 10:00AM

" but in America where a little illegal slut made pregnant by my liberal relative's son had the baby for free although the father's family is well off." - LMAO - is that your version of Ronald Reagan's fantasy "Welfare Queen"?

Only liberal families have sons that impregnant girls? Is that it... ROFL

As far as Conservatism - the last Conservative that ran for President was Barry Goldwater. Ronald Reagan was no conservative. He was a Corporate Feudal Lord Shill like he was for GE Theatre in the 1960's... He was persuasive and a great liar, but no conservative. He started the downward spiral for the middle class - Or is Conservatism against the 99% and all for the 1%?
Hmmm?

Von Mises Jr| 12.7.12 @ 10:40AM

I thought you were the "Welfare Queen?" Or was that the "Drama Queen?"

Von Mises Jr| 12.7.12 @ 10:50AM

Hey Perp. You still haven't answered my riddle about "Social Justice." An article on Socialism would be a great opportunity for you to educate the people that don't ask "society" to pay for their babies. It takes a "Village Idiot."Here you go, Cheetah:

"So perhaps I will talk with Perp today if the jackass can tell me what is this "social justice" when we pay $1.4B to fly around and entertain little barry bama and Moochelle for one stinking year when some inner-city mother is trying to feed a family for $30 per week that doesn't cover seven cheap lunches anymore?
I will be awaiting your genius Caliban."

GobBluthe| 12.8.12 @ 7:50AM

As Hayek said " social justice has no meaning"

Von Mises Jr| 12.9.12 @ 9:50AM

You are correct, Gobluthe. In "Law, Legislation and Liberty - The Mirage of Social Justice" he makes that point in advance in exploring the subject. He does say that the best synonym is to substitute "redistributive" for "social" and you will know what the double talking Marxist mean.

Actually, Hayek writes in several books about the perversion of the language where "Liberty" and "freedom" have become the words that are the complete opposite of their original meaning.

Perp, the consummate Marxist is now trying to tell us Reagan was not a conservative. Well Hayek wrote "Why I am not a Conservative" since the classical meaning is to conserve. But this is reactionary and he calls him an "Old Whig" (like Burke) instead.
In fact, today's reader of Hayek and Mises are most likely libertarian or a real progressive meaning accepting what is good in society with minor positive change. But today's progressives are really Dystopian "Noble Savage" lovers with some nonsensical Descartes/Nietzsche vision of the anointed that will remake civilization so well that God will blush in embarrassment.

But since they keep perverting the language, we need to be clear who they are and what we mean.

One of the myths of socialism perpetuated even by many of its opponents is that it's an equal sharing of miseries or even aspires to equality.

What a joke.

Whether in the USA where cronyism and race/gender preferences are the norm or even in Western Europe, the normal schlub without contacts is a "forgotten man". In the former USSR, being forgotten would be a step up since they ran the trains on time to Siberia. While the left tries to pretend that Stalin was an aberration, the reality is that's the end result of Socialist cronyism and fascism: Government is more efficient under socialism at dealing with their lower classes by exterminating or scapegoating them. Since socialism is still under development in the USA and even Europe, they haven't reached that point yet.

But they clearly are well on the way.

Death camps are as natural to socialism as apple pie and Benny Hill are to right wingers in the USA. So yeah, socialism is bad not only because it doesn't work but when it does work, you wish it didn't.

C. Vernon Crisler | 12.7.12 @ 8:08AM

If the Bible is true, then dinosaurs were created along with all other kinds of animals. It is generally regarded among creationists that most dinosaurs were killed during the Flood, and those that survived have gone extinct.

To deny the coexistence of man and dinosaurs is in effect to deny Christianity. A lot of Christians don't want to accept that fact, but it's because they've learned the delicate art of compartmentalization.

GobBluthe| 12.7.12 @ 8:32AM

Sorry, Mr. Crisler, but "to deny the coexistence of man and dinosaurs" is NOT "to deny Christianity. It's only to deny an ill-informed view of Biblical history and theology. You don't have to check your brain at the door to be a Christian.

C. Vernon Crisler | 12.9.12 @ 6:11PM

Unfortunately for your view, the book of Genesis is just as much a part of the Bible as are the resurrection narratives. Like I said, a lot of Christians practice the art of compartmentalization.

Von Mises Jr| 12.7.12 @ 8:55AM

Perhaps Perp is descendant from a monkey, Stephie. Let's see if Cheetah's child can answer a riddle. That may shed some light on Perp's pedigree.

He ignored my riddle yesterday in the Booker article, so I will ask Caliban again: little barry and Moochelle spent $1.4B last year for travel and entertainment. Inner-city people get $30 per week to feed their kid on SNAP. Can Cheetah explain this dilemma in terms of "social justice?"

Nancy in NC| 12.7.12 @ 9:01AM

Please don't insult the monkeys.

Von Mises Jr| 12.7.12 @ 9:19AM

My apologizes to monkeys, Nancy.

Perhaps Gulliver brought Perp's ancestors back from the "Land of the Houyhnhnms."
For those who think this is a children’s fairytale, it is brilliant satire where the "Yahoos" resemble the filthy and unpleasant habits of humans and became a word to describe a "crude, brutish or obscenely coarse person."
Perhaps a little too generous for Caliban (“The Tempest”).

Who knows? It's a mystery. It's also got nothing to do with evolution.

Doctor Right| 12.7.12 @ 2:42PM

It has EVERYTHING to do with evolution.

EVERYTHING.

If you can't answer that question, then you can't discuss evolution with a shred of credibility.

DRed| 12.7.12 @ 2:47PM

I did answer the question. The answer is that I have no idea.

Doctor Right| 12.7.12 @ 2:55PM

You said they have nothing to do with one another.

Here's a few other questions that need to be asked/answered when discussing evolution:

1. What is the difference between a Law, a Theory, and a Hypothesis?
2. What is the First Law of Thermodynamics?
3. Where did all of the matter and energy in the universe originate?

DRed| 12.7.12 @ 2:57PM

They don't have anything to do with each other. Evolution concerns life on earth, not the origins of the universe. It's like you're saying I can't understand the NFL because I don't know anything about Beethoven. They're two totally unrelated subjects.

Doctor Right| 12.7.12 @ 3:50PM

That's incredibly naive.

The earth is part of the universe. So before you can posit the "evolution" of life on earth, you need to understand the forces behind the existence of the universe...because one is not possible without the other.

DRed| 12.7.12 @ 4:44PM

No, you don't. I can cook a loaf of bread without any idea how to grow wheat. They're two completely different things. The universe could have been created by God for all I know, but if it was, that doesn't change the fact that life developed on earth by the process of evolution from a common ancestor.

Von Mises Jr| 12.8.12 @ 7:26AM

Your family had nothing to do with evolution either, DRedful Communist.

Stephie - tell me you can't be this stupid?

If Dogs were domesticated from wolves - why are there still wolves? You can't be that dumb, can you?

Doctor Right| 12.7.12 @ 11:29AM

If dogs were domesticated from wolves, that does NOT mean that ALL wolves were domesticated.

Duh.

How dumb are you?

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 1:40PM

Nor did all monkeys become humans - ARE YOU that Stupid? Can you follow the debate or not?

DRed| 12.7.12 @ 2:26PM

No monkeys became humans. Monkeys are monkeys. We evolved from a common ancestor that was neither human nor monkey.

Doctor Right| 12.7.12 @ 2:56PM

There's NO proof of that whatsoever. All we have are bone fragments of things that look like apes, and a deeply flawed book written by Charles Darwin before anyone even knew about cellular biology.

DRed| 12.7.12 @ 3:03PM

I suppose god gave us nearly the same DNA as chimps to troll the non-believers, eh?

There's a mountain of evidence supporting evolution from common answers, and not a single shred of evidence to suggest some magic sky god created humans by breathing into a pile of dirt. You can believe whatever you want, but all caps in the world don't make the evidence go away.

DRed| 12.7.12 @ 3:38PM

argh. I meant common ancestors. whoops.

Doctor Right| 12.7.12 @ 3:57PM

There is no "mountain of evidence" supporting Darwinian Evolution; that's a false assumption propped up by those who claim to believe in "science" but deny the very tenets of science in order to remove God from the equation.

The "98%" DNA that humans share with chimps is a canard because that 2% difference actually accounts for millions of base pairs in the DNA code.

All living creatures share similar DNA. That's because DNA is composed of 4 amino acids: thymine, cytosine, guanine, and adenosine. Adenosine only binds to thymine, and cytosine only binds to guanine across the double-helix. It's the same for plants, animals, and fungi.

FYI, DNA is Base-4 code, meaning it's exponentially more complicated than the binary code that drives the hard-drive in your computer.

Did your computer spontaneously appear, all by itself? Of course not. So why do you think that living organisms, the simplest of which is far more advanced than your iPAD, "evolved" all by themselves?

DRed| 12.7.12 @ 4:42PM

I think that living organisms evolved because the overwhelming preponderance of scientific evidence indicates that they did.

C. Vernon Crisler | 12.9.12 @ 6:15PM

Excellent comments Doctor Right.

Doctor Right| 12.7.12 @ 2:26PM

Another Conservadum at work... CJW Conservadum extraordinaire.

Doctor Right| 12.7.12 @ 11:32AM

You don't understand the concept of rights, either?

WHAT A SHOCK!!!!

Here...watch as I point out how stupid and vapid you are:

Can a newly born baby (like, 5 minutes old)

1. Sue you?
2. Buy a house?
3. Go to school?

No. So I guess they don't have rights, either?

You're as dumb as they come.

It's too bad that Conservatives actually believe in morality and fair-play...otherwise, we could easily manipulate morons like you with cheap slogans and promises, too.

You 47%-ers are sheep.

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 1:47PM

Dr Dum-Dum - I'll bet you a years salary that a 2 yr old, a 5 yr old, a 10 yr old, a 12 yr old and a 16 yr old can't do some of those things either. Do you know which ones?
Morality and fair play is not what you are exercising when you try to suppress peoples voting rights, now is it? Nor forcing a woman to submit to non-medical necessary ultrasounds?

BTW - who decides morality? And what is "Fair"?
I'm sure you have some idea, don't you?

Why to you constantly go to the strawman of the tiny Christian sect that believes this 6000 year trope? Because you think you can score. 95% of the world population has a belief in God, different iterations, but most believe evolution or at least wheels of consciousness rising and falling. The hindus state that a day in the life of Brahma is some trillion years times Pi. So keep burning that strawman, if you think it gives you points. Take on a worthy opponent, not just the ones of your choosing. But then you are clearly an illiterate.

OP4| 12.7.12 @ 7:17AM

Splitting hairs, but today's Democrats are fascists not socialists. They have come to accept their own incompetence so they are no longer pushing for government ownership of production.

Instead they seek to control industries and individuals through a web of taxes, regulations, and subsidies. Not quite as direct as Mussolini (yet), but the same idea.

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 8:03AM

No one has ever pushed for government ownership of production - not even during WWII, and especially not now. Where do you get this crap?

Oh, you are brilliant - taxes, regulation and subsidies do exert some control... but it's hardly fear of a concentration camp, now is it?

A little overreach, don't you think? Are you losing your mind because Barack Obama is still the President?

Doctor Right| 12.7.12 @ 8:09AM

Obama and the Federal Gov't are now the largest shareholders of GM, dummy.

That's called "government ownership" of production.

FYI, in order to do so, they denied the rightful shareholders their lawful claim on the value of the company.

Seriously, you Libs are so effing stupid, it's no wonder you can be persuaded by stupid slogans ("Hope and Change") and an utterly unaccomplished, under-educated man simply because he's black.

Stephie| 12.7.12 @ 8:42AM

Half black Dr. And didn't obama tell us that GM "paid it all back"? He didn't lie did he?

Purp, why are you so nasty and mean? Didn't your mama tell you that gloating is poor sportsmanship? I'm waiting to see you post the liberal comment that's gone viral since Nov. 7th.

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 10:23AM

Stephie -
Yes, GM did pay back all their loans. The Federal Govt still owns 1/2 the shares they bought originally, but it's about 16% of the shares now. Not that much and dropping. So much for your factual errors. You can look them up yourself on Google - in 20 seconds.

Nasty and mean? Do you read the comments thrown at me? I will NOT be shit on without throwing it back. YOUR people did it first, but if you think liberals are pushovers, well, you are wrong.
You want to be civil? You first. I respond in kind.

Doctor Right| 12.7.12 @ 11:35AM

People aren't civil with you on this board because you're a troll.

You don't agree with anything printed here, but you like to hang out and provoke people.

Hey...it's a free country. You have every right to be here, and I for one would hate to see you banned because your posts serve as a shining example of liberal idiocy.

In other words, every word you type proves how utterly stupid you are...and liberalism, by proxy.

Civil? No promises. So stop crying, dip-stick.

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 1:50PM

Troll? Because you say so? And, that's a reason to be uncivil? Seriously?

Whine? I don't whine, I attack back... Surely you know that by now, Dr. Dum-Dum.

The fact you think every word is liberal stupidity is how dumb you are - I voted for Reagan 2x, and Papa Bush... but I got smart and you are still dumb. A Conservadum.

Doctor Right| 12.7.12 @ 2:29PM

Yes. Because I say so.

That's because I'm smarter than you, and more productive than you.

Oldefarte| 12.9.12 @ 1:37PM

Nah, GM's $13 million still owed is chickenfeed to you domestic terrorists!!!!!!!!!!!!

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 10:15AM

So what? There was a good reason for that, a temporary reason ( you do know the government has sold 1/2 it's shares in GM don't you? And will sell more as it is financially feasible.
THAT's your big example of a Government Ownership of production? Hardly the Russian Oil Company Lukoil, or Russian Aeroflot under total control of the Russian Government, now is it?
BTW - bankruptcy always results in shareholder losses - just the risk of capitalism, pal.

Hahahahaha - He beat your ass, TWICE, and you STILL can't accept it, can you ? You still can't accept that America REJECTS your ideology and your shilling for the rich and powerful, can you?

What a rough life you have ahead, since the next 20 years are clearly a Blue America.

Unemployment dropped again, so I guess you people were wrong and the true American people were right to re-elect Barack Obama. Clearly the better choice.

Doctor Right| 12.7.12 @ 11:39AM

The next 20 years???

Hah-Hah!!! Enjoy your liberal fantasies.

Ever hear of the Weimar Republic?

And BTW, dummy...unemployment has risen again...so you're wrong, again.

Listen...we realize that you're kind of a pathetic fool who hero-worships Obama because your life is rather shallow and empty. So we realize that you need to attach yourself to him in order to feel good about yourself, and that envy is all you've got.

What's funny is how ignorant you are about the things you post.

So I don't get mad at guys like you. That would be like getting mad a a mosquito for biting me. You're just doing the only thing you know how to do.

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 1:52PM

7.7% is the lowest in 4 years, brainiac.

My life is shallow and empty? - told to me by another who trolls the same site... that's rich. And HYSTERICAL...

Doctor Right| 12.7.12 @ 2:32PM

Yes.

You're always here. You seem to take delight in provoking people by saying idiotic things you know they'll disagree with.

Being here obviously gives you some kind of thrill that you need to give your pathetic life some measure of meaning.

That's one of the reason you buy into the Left's baloney. You're envious of people who have things you want, but don't have the smarts or the initiative to earn by yourself. So you want someone like Obama to "make things right" and take from the successful people and give to dickheads like yourself.

In short, you're a loser.

You were a loser before Obama came along, you're a loser now, and you'll be a loser in the future. Obama CAN'T fix that for you.

Oldefarte| 12.7.12 @ 3:21PM

No you lying sack of excrement, the govment still ownes GM and forever will since its stock is worthless as are it produced vehicles now. "Blue America" [again with the inappropriate capitalization...what a DA]? What about Michigan which just passed right-to-work status, DA?? Unemployment is at 20% truthfully due to the shrinking LABOR PARTICIPATION RATE, DA! Get prepared for your $2500 income tax bill next year from your KING, DA!!!!!!!!!

GobBluthe| 12.7.12 @ 8:23AM

But what is it that makes the highly educated liberal elite so dumb? As the article makes plain several times the results of socialism are well-known and certain.

I think this: "The Fatal Flaw" sheds some light on that at:

http://john-moloney.blogspot.com/

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 8:08AM

Most Americans don't advocate or would accept Socialism... having a favorable view of babies doesn't mean you want to have one, does it? - why do you keep harping on the same concept?
You lost the election, but have you lost your mind?

My God you people are dumb. Conservadums.

Doctor Right| 12.7.12 @ 8:21AM

The Left does not value Liberty; they confuse Liberty with "Libertine."

To that end, they equate something as silly as "Gay Marriage" with the Civil Rights struggle of the 1960's, which is intellectually stupid and insulting to black Americans.

Liberty is not the right to do whatever feels good, free of the judgment of others or the reasonable constraints of society.

In fact, without the foundations of a moral people, liberty itself is meaningless.

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 10:30AM

Naw - that's your twisted view of liberalism. Did Rush teach you that?
Unless you're gay, you don't know what you're talking about.
Are civil rights for women an insult to blacks too? How 'bout rights of the disabled? Is that an insult too?
Horrible try to divide and conquer - let me give you a clue - don't run for political office. You ain't got it, Chum.

"Liberty is not the right to do whatever feels good, free of the judgment of others or the reasonable constraints of society.

It is the right-wing that wants to put braces on everyone's liberty, not the left.
Think choice, marriage equality, marijuana, vaginal ultrasound probes, contraception, level playing field.. just to name a few where Conservadums want to control everyone to follow their selected (and superior - LMAO -) morality.

Doctor Right| 12.7.12 @ 11:44AM

THANK YOU for proving my point.

Exactly on cue, you said:

"It is the right-wing that wants to put braces on everyone's liberty, not the left. Think choice, marriage equality, marijuana, vaginal ultrasound probes, contraception, level playing field"

The "vaginal ultrasound probes" comment is weird, to say the least...

But the rest is pure drivel. And it proves my point.

To the left, "liberty" means satisfying their own selfish desires - killing their unborn children, fiddling with other men's penises and buttocks, getting high, calling Bob and Steve "married" (how absurd), and money for nothing.

That's because liberalism is an essentially "me-focused" ideology.

To the Conservative, "Liberty" is what's good for the country. We don't look at all issues through the prism of self.

And FYI...no one is stopping you from getting married, Purp. Just find a nice girl, and marry her.

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 1:56PM

Doctor Right| 12.7.12 @ 2:36PM

And yes, we Conservatives DON'T look at life through the prism of "self," and we don't look to government to solve our problems. Only losers and deadbeats do that.

Yes purp, the red state troglodytes can keep worshipping uniformed fascists for all I care. When conservatives lose, they don’t have the common decency to flee the country or seek emotional counseling as many men, women and transgendered progressives do. You and I know that conservatives are too cold and inhuman to appreciate the concept of empathy. We need to really hammer it into their thick skulls that they're just too damn superstitious and stupid to be trusted with the future of this country. Perhaps, now is not the time for divisive partisan politics, but rather reach across and help (destroy) throw off the very system that is tainted with the stench of capitalist greed.

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 10:35AM

Okay, I can go with that. Quite perceptive of you, with the exception of the "emotional counseling" line - that's mostly for Republican women that stay at home eating bon-bons waiting for hubbie so they can throw up their legs.

pogybait| 12.7.12 @ 12:03PM

So Purp, after we've rid ourselves of the Republican and religious menace, we'll continue to go after those whose divisiveness divides the real America: the evil rich. That'll be fairly easy as we have managed to demonize them to great success already. Remember, in a new united America, they'll have no resources at all because we will be imposing confiscatory taxation on their greedy evil ways, we'll take the power out of the hands of the CEO's and put it back where it belongs: in the hands of the government and workers. Finally, once we've forced all the evil Christians and the greedy rich to stop polarizing the country, we'll take care of the idealogues or, anyone whose idealogy is different than ours. Because while we insist on tolerance and diversity, we simply can't tolerate diversity of opinions. If we're ever going to unify the nation, if we're ever going to realize the utopian dream of free love, free drugs and the right not to work, we must be of one purpose. Yes Purp, Obama has enraptured the masses , this prophet, this personification of the socialist dream, the aggregate of all progressive sapience….forward Purp!

"A majority of the political party currently in the ascendancy in America holds a positive view of an economic system that has been tried countless times in countless places, has never delivered prosperity, but has always diminished personal and economic freedom."

That's true, Larry, but there's more to it than just that.

Realize that those who support socialism here in America have themselves never done better for doing less than under the up to now quasi-socialistic programs of the Democrats. And such people figure if just a taste of socialism was good, more would be better.

To such people (who I often times call 'parasites'), socialism is freedom -- freedom from hard work, freedom from risk, freedom to develop their inner artist on the public dime.

Reason, logic, and facts will never change their mind. Sadly, only a train wreck that literally derails the gravy train that they are riding can sober them up.

Purp| 12.7.12 @ 8:16AM

LMAO... Where have you been over the last 5 years?

"Sadly, only a train wreck that literally derails the gravy train that they are riding can sober them up." - we've already had that train wreck - it's called the Bush Depression.
America has awakened to the Corporate Feudal Lords takeover of America starting with the election of their prime mouthpiece, Ronald Reagan and ending with the Bush Depression.

Ever since Reagan came on the scene, Middle Class America has declined while the super rich Corporate Feudal Lords have increased their wealth exponentially, at the detriment of the majority of America. Oh, and they added 11 Trillion dollars to the National Debt (that Republicans now want to default on! )
Americans now see the truth and have REJECTED that takeover.

Even Karl Rove and Dick Morris have been FIRED by Fox News! Will wonders never cease?

No, the jig is up and you can look forward to and enjoy 30 years of the America of 30 years ago. Just like Meg Whitman said about California (before she lost to Jerry Brown, who WAS Governor 30 years ago)

The middle class actually started in decline well before Reagan you Putz. Middle class wages peaked in 1973 and the root of the loss in middle class wages can be traced to the float of the USD in 1971, which lead to incresed inflation.

Dodd2| 12.7.12 @ 8:54AM

The Democratic party is the enemy of the middle class - the productive middle class, that is -- not the parasitic element that has found a cushy home in the bowls of government.

Purp:

How is wealth created?

What exactly is "the economy"?

Reagan instituted massive, across-the-board tax cuts, and the economy boomed during the 80's and 90's. Can you therefore explain, with details, how the middle class has "declined" since Reagan?

Can you explain the mechanics of "the Bush Depression"? Exactly what did GW Bush do to cause this so-called "depression"?

What is the "Fair Housing Act"? How does it work? Who signed it into law?

Let's see how you answer these questions (BTW...I'm betting you can't)

Tick-Tock...

GobBluthe| 12.7.12 @ 9:39AM

What's the Congressional Research Service and what did they recently prove a false assertion?
What was Blackwater, and what was it indicative of?
What's the Glass-Steagall Act and what did repealing it cause?
Can you explain Free Trade?
What is the Industrial-Military Complex and who warned us about it?
Who was the first President that Evangelicals voted for in large numbers?
How would the Medicare Drug Benefit be described as "Santa Claus"? Who passed it?

30 years ago from 1973-82 America was not exactly a happy place. Happiness was from 1982-2000.

It isn't partisan. Fact is Clinton was the second most conservative president in the last half of the 20th century. Cut capital gains taxes, welfare reform and presided of a govt that in real terms shrank by 20%. Freeing hundreds of billions in capital for the private sector. The majority of Americans say the country is on the wrong track.

Petronius| 12.8.12 @ 11:32AM

Sorry GtB
Bob Rubin and Felix Rohattyn set economic policy during the Clinton years. Rubin controlled their appetite for confiscation at the Treasury and let Felix engineer phasing out the 30 year bonds and rolling over a lot of public debt at lower rates and short terms thus reducing the requirement for taxation to service it all. With the onset of information technology, the savings to business were reflected in earnings and equity value enabling expansion and tons of good living we no longer enjoy no thanks to cultural vandals like Purp. Liberals destroyed the value of my property and portfolio. Their economic model is the nursery school sand box. And their culture a poor imitation of a Roman circus. I suppose, Mr. Purp, you think money grows on trees in D.C.? No, they just digitally print it.

You're repeating yourself again, Purp. That's a sign of dementia, which is rather an odd disability in a 16-year-old.

But you're still here. So I confess I was wrong about that one. I recall anticipating that the Professor would pull the under-the-bus routine with his hired internet flaks if he won the election. On the other hand, perhaps you'll disappear into the ether after December 31.

And now back to "Specialty of the House" (1959), an episode of the old "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" TV show in which the portly Robert Morley plays a businessman dazzled by the magnificent cuisine of a restaurant called Spirro's, available to a members-only clientele. On the day when the intermittent "Specialty" is to be offered, he is invited into the kitchen for a tour and a meeting with the chef, a tall white-haired man who greets him with a large meat-cleaver. And we suddenly realize what the "Specialty" is. Spirro, the owner of the establishment, is played by Madame Spivy, stage name of Bertha Levine (1906-71), a heavy-set woman of husky voice who actually ran a famous New York restaurant from 1940 until 1951, when she entered films in sinister roles.

What a laugh. Purp, go live among the average Democrat voter. Southeast DC or Detroit. On the other hand, I could easily live among trailer park residents in Alabama.

The left often portrays the normal right wing voter as a strawman caricature such as Archie Bunker or my favorite, "Lucky" in King of the Hill but those guys are not so bad to live around. They are more or less law abiding and productive members of society. On the other hand, how often do we see portrayed in the mainstream media the typical Democrat voter? A non-white unwed mother and her offspring? How many of them think they're tolerable to watch on TV much less live amongst?

Petronius| 12.7.12 @ 10:37AM

They're on Maury and Jerry if one can stand them for more than 15 seconds.

PolishKnight| 12.7.12 @ 10:47AM

Ha! I thought someone might say that. But keep in mind, Petronius, that they deliberately bring in trailer park trash whites precisely because nobody would want to watch the show otherwise. (And on Springer, most of the trailer park southerners has obviously fake accents and poor acting. Pro wrestling is better scripted.)

That said, one of my wife and my favorite shows were the Flavor of Love series and spinoffs on VH1. It was like watching a train wreck. A friend of mine could only handle it for 5 seconds but some of the stuff was truly hilarious and oftentimes heart wrenching. Homeless women were begging Flavor to be on his reality dating show. It was unreal and unlike Springer, hard to tell what was scripted and what wasn't making it all that more compelling.

I suggest you see if it's on Netflix. I find it's most fun to watch with malt liquor. (Nothing hatefully racist about it. They ENDORSE it on their show!)

I'm afraid we don't have 40 years to reverse this trend that took this long, I'm afraid civil unrest will be unleashed soon as the Left drives America over the cliff.

Some of them won't even wake up AFTER their ox is gored.

We have about 109 million people providing for about 82 million people: combination of those on welfare or working for the government. How long will that scenario work?

PolishKnight| 12.7.12 @ 9:48AM

My wife lived in the former USSR and she says there were a lot of good things about it: "Free" medical care (albeit of mixed quality), 2 years, repeat, 2 years of paid maternity leave, 2 month long vacations and most basics of life were cheap. This was for all workers.

By that standard, the socialism of the USA is a failure. When the left compares the higher cost per capita of healthcare in the USA to Canada they don't mention that they lump in medicaid/medicare which comprises half of that so the socialist system in the USA is already at least 1/2 as efficient as Canada and getting worse!

Of course, that's the plusses. For normal people living in political subjugation (like a college student being charged with a hate crime), your standard of living was tolerable but low. You had to be a party member to shop at the GUM store and live well and membership wasn't had simply by drinking cool aid. You had to be related to or know someone. And with regime changes, that could be a mixed blessing.

The same largely applies in the USA's Soviet model. If you're a Federal worker whose roommate was Al Gore's niece, you get a great high paying Tony Soprano no-show job. If not, you work at Foxxcon, if you're lucky. So they blame foxconn for the problems of their fascist system which doesn't even aspire to Soviet standards.

PolishKnight| 12.7.12 @ 10:23AM

You know you annoy leftists when they get angry at you. I angered one of them once by coining a slogan: socialism is gay.

He was outraged. How dare I use such a homophobic slur? But I remarked that, like Charlton Heston saying "Damn you all to hell!" at the end of Planet of the Apes, I was being literal. Socialism in the USA, among other things, is gay. It's anti-heterosexual both in terms of now pandering to gays as a significant electorate and part of their party elite but also undermining heterosexuality via feminism.

Aside from that, another observation that makes leftists want to change the subject is that in the states, most socialists don't want to live among their own electorate. The average Democrat voter is non-white and an unwed mother. Most of them want to live among white guys. Even Obama's racist preacher lives in a gated, white community! How do they get Sweden out of that?

Leftism doesn't make sense except in one powerful way: It's a naked, Orwellian grab for power at all costs. Who cares if in the end everyone is lying dead after having drunk cool aid? What matters is they got the job done! In a way, it's truly Judeo-Christian-Islam religion taken to the sublime which seeks to convert everyone and in the end, the world will be perfect once that has been achieved. We aren't shown the logic of how that works but we take it as a matter of faith.

djn1313| 12.7.12 @ 10:32AM

The demoRATS have been socialists/communists for decades. Most of their enslaved uneducated and unproductive minority masses view socialism favorably because they don't want to get off their lazy butts and work. The demoRATS have bred generation after generation of takers.

These lazy minorities only care about how much they can take from those who work and pay taxes. These people have no value to society, they are the cancer destroying it.

PolishKnight| 12.7.12 @ 10:51AM

DJN, what's funny is that most right wingers don't realize that isn't even true. For most of the Democrat electorate, race and gender preferences trump all and they are largely "free". They get first class treatment while white males are second class citizens. They may be poor but at least they ride on the front of the bus while shoving someone else to the back. That's the primary motivator for most of them. They could care less about marxism and most don't even understand what you just said above. I asked them. They stutter a bit but once they see I'm buying them a beer they admit they like making "white guys pay."

With that kind of nasty agenda underfoot, maybe we should let them tax the rich to death. Why not make them enjoy the same royal treatment us middle and working class whites have been receiving?

The Government is my Shepherd, I need not work.

It alloweth me to lie down on good jobs.

It leadeth me beside still Factories.

It destroyeth my initiative.

It leadeth me in the paths of the parasite for politics sake.

Yea’ tho I walk through the valley of the shadow of laziness and deficit spending, I will fear no evil, for the Government is with me.

It’s dole and vote getters, they comport me.

It prepareth an economic Utopia for me, by appropriating the earnings of my grandchildren.

It filleth my head with bologna, my inefficiency runneth over.

Surely the Government shall care for me, all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in a fools paradise forever.

Look at what the progressives have done to the inner city. Look at what the progressives have done since Wilson. It wasn’t capitalism that caused our economic dilemma. It was the government and the progressives who run it. They have pissing away our money for 90 years. First of all, it's always fun to see how quickly and consistently these comment threads revert to good old name-calling. Second (not that it matters, but since you seem to enjoy brining Canada into the discussion for some reason-maybe it's because we're the "North Korea of North America"), the Canadian government is currently controlled by the Conservatives (the equivalent of the Republicans) and has been for the last two elections. With one-tenth of the US population, but a larger land mass (most of which, while not being the "Siberia" as was mentioned earlier is relatively sparsely populated), there will be waits for "elective" medical treatments due to the density of the population in the southern part of the country-but there are no lineups around the Toronto General Hospital and the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children is one of the most renouned children's hospitals in the world-look it up.
Anyway, the provincial health care programs cover only the basics-the rest are financed the old-fashioned way...we buy private health insurance too.
And if any of you care to visit Canada (say, for skiing in Alberta) and breaks a leg, believe or not you will be treated as an emergency case and...wait for it...

...I said WAIT FOR IT...

...you won't have to wait. :)

By the way, many of you may recall the name "Shona Holmes". She's the lady from Ontario who had a "life-threatning brain tumour" and, after having been "denied" OHIP care in Ontario, took her own money and went to the Maio Clinic in Arizone. She is now trying to sue the Ontario government. She appeared in several "anti-Obamacare" commercials before the election. Has anybody followed up on her?

Petronius-I'm very interested in the research that you've obviously done in the area of Canadian and British "Death Panels". I'm sure that you'd be happy to share the names of some of these victims with the rest of us-are they interred in "Death Camps" while awaiting their demise, or are they just sent home to slowly waste away? (You'd think that their neighbours would notice the smell). Again, names, please. Also, if you could provide the names of these "Death Panelists", I'm certain that the United Nations would be more than willing to prosecute them.

Socialism is based on the marxian slogan "Expropriate the exproproators"! According to this logic, in the past the today's poor had all the money, and then came the capitalists who stole it all. Socialism is the philosophy of the graveyard.

Essential for the survival of this proud and incredible country is placing all government employees unions out of business on the legal basis that such unions are by definition criminal enterprises against the people, as even Roosevelt defined them back in the 1930’s. Such unions must be routinely prosecuted under the RICO Act laws. Teachers unions in the short 45 years of their existence have brought our education from among the best in the world down to the level of Zimbabwe, having produced 3 generations of illiterate nincompoops voting for “social justice – it sounds nice”. As an example of our “education” I remember a bright 17-year old son of our neighbors telling us proudly some 30 years ago how he got an A in his foreign affairs class: the teacher was reading a newspaper article about the killings in Rwanda. He was then asked what he thought about it: he answered that he “felt bad about it” and was given an A. Upon further conversation it came out that he was not sure whether Africa was south or north in relation to India, but in any case “It was irrelevant”.

Democrats and other socialists "approve" of small businesses because they have faux romantic, Norman Rockwell, "It's a Wonderful Life" view of them. A small business is Pop's Hardware down on the corner where everything is dusty and nobody knows what anything is, and the coffee shop out by the highway that serves lousy coffee and worse eggs and the waitress is grumpy, but hey, all the old timers go there. In other words, it's all part of the whole "it takes a village" schtick. They don't approve of small businesses when it comes to dry cleaners and chrome platers and all the other day-to-day reality businesses that in fact make our society possible, but don't look good from the window of a Prius.

Always interesting to see Leftists insist that we accept HuffPo as a source when they refuse to even read anything on Fox.

Anyway, let me quote the drivel you cited:

At any rate, this all explains why, when someone hears, "Obama is a socialist!" it necessitates a trip to Webster's Dictionary, just to make sure that the definition of "socialism" hasn't suddenly been changed to "an economic arrangement that favors having the wealthy rentier class make out like bandits, forever."

This explains EXACTLY why socialists are stupid (same with communists and other forms of collectivism). Their ideas always achieve exactly the opposite of their stated intent. Unfortunately, they are so incredibly dense that they assume that these results prove that their ideas must not have been tried, since they could not possibly have failed! Further, they assume that those who oppose their ideas must WANT bad things to happen, and must be getting their way!

WE are the ones who do not want oppression by the few, which is why we oppose your insanity. But you and your HuffPo friends will never allow yourselves to consider this, so you'll go on insisting that the fact that bad things are happening proves that socialism must not be being practiced.

Ralph Novy| 12.10.12 @ 7:56PM

"[Y]ou'll go on insisting that the fact that bad things are happening proves that socialism must not be being practiced."

Never said that. Never thought that. No-one I know has ever said that.

P.S., J.D.: Your quotation proved MY point, not YOURS. Read some more of that piece, I'd suggest. It's not "definitive" on the issue at hand, but a pretty damned good start. Linkins is an exceptionally gifted thinker and writer.
