FOR YEARS I’VE BEEN TALKING about the “Long War” and the need to
prosecute a perpetual campaign against the progressive left. Many
people scoff at the notion of perpetual campaigning and say it
detracts from the business of governing. Those people are usually
liberals, who don’t like it when conservatives look and sound as if
they may actually put up a fight, or conservatives who shudder at
the thought of real work when they think a white paper will do. But
the perpetual war is necessary.
We just concluded yet another multi-billion- dollar presidential
campaign—and it doesn’t much matter who won. Presidents don’t
govern in a vacuum. They need partners, allies, and other elected
officials willing—for whatever reason—to support their agendas. The
problem we face in our country is the same today as it was on
November 6: Too many “conservative” members of Congress are willing
to support policies that lead to more spending and bigger
government.
Hundreds of members over the last three decades have stood idly
by while government outlays have doubled, while debt and deficits
have ballooned, and while the challenges we face as a nation have
been kicked down the road for other generations to handle. Many
have been actively complicit in mortgaging our future. Yet in 2012,
only three GOP members of Congress lost primary elections against
fiscally conservative, liberty-minded challengers.
It’s easy to rail against liberal incumbents. We do it well, and
often. But there remains a stigma among Republicans and
conservatives that if you have the temerity to hold your own
representatives accountable to the principles of limited
government, you are an apostate. If America is to stay free and
prosperous, this attitude must change.
Sure, we can say that we stand for limited government, less
regulation, lower taxation, and more freedom from an expanding,
intrusive government.
But talk and white papers are cheap and easy. To
solve our nation’s problems we need real reform. That takes the
courage of conviction. It takes constant reinforcement.
We’ve spent the last year and a half focused on the presidential
election because it’s a simple construction—two people from
opposing parties in a contest for the most electoral votes. It’s
flashy. It’s exciting. It’s hypnotic. And barring serious political
courage, it’s about nothing more than choosing which party will
stand at the helm of the American ship of state when it smashes
into a massive iceberg of debt.
But we’ve been overlooking the hundreds of congressional, state,
and local races whose outcomes have a far greater impact on the
future of our country than the battle at the top. If real national,
generational reform is to take place, it won’t happen at the top.
It will start from the bottom, a groundswell that will bring about
fundamental change.
The campaign isn’t over: For conservatives, it’s only beginning.
Our fight is not just to maintain a majority position. Pro-life
statists and RINOs, even self-proclaimed fiscal conservatives, must
be exposed as frauds if they don’t put forth a real plan to reduce
the tax burden and close the budget deficit—not in 10 years, but in
four.
Our perpetual campaign must expose the bad behavior of the
elected officials who claim to represent the conservative majority
but sponsor the same failed policies of the left. Maybe those
leaders aren’t radicals. Maybe they’re not true believers in the
welfare state—they are statists with a smile. But so long as they
nibble at the edges of our overgrown budget, they are part of the
problem.
Political pundits love to ruminate about the future role of the
Tea Party and the conservative grassroots. This is it. Ending the
permanent protected class of unaccountable leadership in America
isn’t just about beating the left. It’s also about reforming the
right to make it effective.
Our leaders are creating a fiscal mess of historic proportions,
and bold leadership is needed to right the ship. Liberals won’t do
it. For them the campaign is never over and the beat goes on. They
have the patience and endurance to wage a war of attrition. It has
worked for them for decades. So no matter how weary conservatives
are, we cannot rest.
We must develop a robust program to find credible, well-financed
replacements for those whose records deserve to be challenged in
2014. Candidate recruitment starts now and is the responsibility of
the grassroots even more than the establishment.
American politics must remain a free-fire zone for true fiscal
conservatives. We must hit the progressives every day while
striking fear in the hearts of “press release conservatives.” If we
are truly to keep America free, and to get this nation back on a
path of prosperity, we must dig in and prepare for the long
war.

Blah blah blah Ned. You're not in the majority and how did your guy Murdock do? The flaw in your position is what happens when your candidates defeat rinos then lose the general election to leftists? Oops
R Martin| 11.19.12 @ 7:23AM
There is no flaw in Mr. Ryun’s position; did you miss the word credible? Murdock, Aiken, O’Donnell et al were never credible but rather reactions against incumbents who were never going to lead the fight for real solutions. Besides, Murdock was largely nominated with help of labor unions who took advantage of an open primary to pick a weak candidate.
Mr. Ryun suggests grass roots work is needed. That effort should include (and perhaps be preceded by) the elimination of open primaries and early voting and, for heaven’s sake, the creation and institutionalization of an honest, accurate and fraud proof voting process.
Stan H.| 11.19.12 @ 7:31AM
Tea Partiers for limited government?
Ha!
All you could talk about was criminalizing a woman's right to termninate a pregnancy. You want to the government to take control of a woman's body.
Your inability to say the word fetus, and your shrill calls of "murder" turned moderate Republicans away in hoards.
You're too extreme, and you're the cause of Romney's defeat.
So . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Get Over It!
KennesawJack| 11.19.12 @ 9:01AM
You use the term "terminate a pregnancy", we use the term "killing an innocent child". You use the term "fetus", we use the term "unborn innocent child". Murder is extreme and that makes YOU the extremist, not me. You're the one who needs to get over it.
vtwin| 11.19.12 @ 10:01AM
Good point! I think you should all run Murdock, Aiken, and O’Donnell again.

Obama favors denying medical care to a baby who survives an abortion, outside of the mother's BODY. Let me guess that Stan H. has no kids; however, he will expect OTHER people's kids to be around to wipe his ass for him in the Nursing Home.
MikeBee| 11.20.12 @ 7:16PM
Stan,
There you go again. Typical liberal. To you, and to all liberals, a woman only exists from the waist down. (O.K. Tatas, too.) When are you liberals going to get out of a woman's reproductive organs and realize that women have brains, too? To you, the Women's vote is simple: talk about their reproductive organs, and scare them about things neither Republicans nor Democrats can affect. NO ONE is changing Roe vs. Wade; it's the law now. NO ONE is taking any drugs away from women, including contraceptives. NO PRESIDENT will do anything about these things. Yet, you Democrats continue to focus, lazer-like, on a woman's reproductive organs and her right not to reproduce. To Republicans, a woman is much, much more, and has an incredible brain, and a wonderful personality, and desires for her future, and dreams and wants. A woman is not a sex object, Stan. Get over it, or lose the women's vote.
TLP| 11.19.12 @ 9:07AM

We're "Too Extreme". We want Babies to Live, and Killers to Die.
We want Able Bodied Men and Women to get off their Lazy Asses and GO TO WORK.
We wanna Drill our own Oil and Gas. We want a Strong Military, and a Limited Central Government.
We want our Immigration LAWS Enforced, and we want Charlie Rangel and John MFing Corzine IN JAIL.
We wanna keep the Money that we Earn. WE want Everyone to be able to PROVE who they are when they go to Vote, just like they have to if they want to get in to Eric Holder's Office, or the White House, or the Liquor Store.
And we want The Constitution to be Adhered to.
And, we'd like all of the Titless Wafs, like StanThe Girly Man, to show us Exactly where this Right to Murder a Child in it's Mother's Womb, is.
That shouldn't be too hard for a Genius like Stan.

Stan,
Wow! What incredible ignorance! An unborn child has a memory, a developing brain, and a personality. If s/he didn't have these things, why would playing certain types of music have any effect on a baby whatsoever? But researchers have determined that an unborn child IS affected by this stuff. It is also affected by the stress level of the mother. A pure mass of material, which you are claiming an unborn child to be, couldn't possibly be affected in any way by these non-physical things.
What stupefying ignorance! Keep it up, Stan, the essence of Liberalism is on display.
Tom of the Missouri| 11.19.12 @ 5:56PM
The hated T-party candidates would have pulled the voting lever against the destruction of the country. It does not take a genius to be a Senator, which is a fact that should be obvious. The self righteous Republican moderate idiots that sandbagged their campaigns should be run out of the party or else a new real conservative/Tea Party type party should be started. And there should be room in it for the Aikens and Mourdocks of the world. Fellow party members can point out their differences with them if asked but they don't have to crucifiy and abandon them to everyone's demise when one of their type is occasionally duly elected by their constituents. Waiting for all candidates to be perfect is a disastrous strategy. The left, who has no shortage of outliers never does this despite the degree of insanity practiced by their members. If the left paints you by association, you should use your money and energy attacking the accuser for lying about you and not attack a member of your own party who like everyone else has some issues with which you disagree. I would take Christine O'Donnel, Aiken or Mourdock any day over the big government statists that our moderates like the loser Karl Rove and anti Akin posters here like Stan H. helped elect. This party suicide has to stop and stop now.
Tom of the Missouri| 11.19.12 @ 5:57PM
This moderate strategy of attacking your own and adopting the lefts ideas half way has never worked and will not work. I for one don't want to be a part of it even if it does work. What is the point if you end up at the same place Obama is taking us anyway but just a little slower. Now is a time for a cleansing or silencing of these name calling suicidal idiots before we can go forward as a party. We could have tolerated them in the past, but now time is short if it is not already too late, so we need to do it now to have any chance of saving the Republic.
7-08| 11.19.12 @ 7:45PM
If you maintain your social issue focus of denying other rights you will continue to lose by diminishing your numbers through gender and generational attrition and no replacement partisans will be possible. Yvonne| 11.19.12 @ 9:50PM

The only hope is that somehow the House decides to put up a fight....Pass a budget, send to Senate, then, when the Senate says, "Pass another CR or we will shut down the govt." Tell them, "Go ahead."
RJ| 11.19.12 @ 9:11AM
For the last two years, the House has unilaterally compromised in the face of intransigence from the White House and the Senate. The House leadership chooses to ignore the fact that every dollar spent by the federal government must be appropriated by the House. John Boehner is not the man for the times we face. We need someone else to represent our views. In an ideal world, we would have a Churchill, Reagan, or Jackson in his place.

Ir's very telling when you don't even spell the guy's name correctly: it's Mourdock.
The problem is most politicians just love the sound of their own voices and never know when to shut up. They have to pontificate endlessly about whatever, even though their principles are rather unsettled. Therefore they end up saying stupid things.
How Akin and Mourdock can say the things they said is beyond the pale, and shows their temerity. I certainly would never defend them as their remarks were stupid and foolish.
We are not in the minority. More Americans identify themselves as pro life than pro choice. But until politicians learn how to explain their positions without sounding like morons, we are bound to lose...especially men who will never be pregnant nor have to confront the personal decision.

Bobby Menedez stiffs not one, but two ladies of the evening - yet he wins big. So, GobBluthe your theory is irrelevant. We lost two seats, well, that's the way a battle is faught - you lose some, you win some. In the end, I'd still rather be on the team, whether we win or lose "here", that espouses values that are worth fighting for. We will continue the fight Mr. Ryun, and the perpetual rant from the left does not weaken those of us who are convicted in our fight. By the way GoBluhe, how many Republican Governor seats did we pick up?

The American Revolution was the only long-lasting successful revolution in history. Hannah Arendt in "On Revolution" explains that many rebellions have occurred in history, but only the United States was able to produce a Constitution of counterbalancing powers.
Europe and Asia have always been ruled by Absolutism: One Supreme Ruler. We followed the model of England after the Magna Charta ended the "Divine Right of Kings." They also had a system of separation of powers as described by Montesquieu dividing executive, legislative and judicial; but also counterbalancing power instead of diminishing power.
For the last four years, the Congress has totally abdicated their power starting with TARP and allowing the Obama regime dictatorial, unconstitutional rule. If they don't stand up NOW, we don't need them as currently constituted. The States must re-create the system in those states that wish to be free.
Nancy in NC| 11.19.12 @ 9:10AM
And the American Revolution was started by 10% of the colonists. We are on the right side of history, the right side of good and evil.
It's quite apparent we can't clean up the left, so we must concentrate on cleaning up our side of the fence. We should start by sweeping out the flotsam of stupidity, and encourage the rest to study their principles. I'm tired of candidates who have no understanding of the Constitution or conservative values.

The dems run a permanant campaign and the less informed voter is the target and the message is cathartic emotion, not persuasion.
This election was mainly about economic security, in which the electorate seem to believe is beyond their ability to do anything about despite more and more credentialed citizenry.
RJ| 11.19.12 @ 8:58AM
While there is much truth to what Ned has written, the battle for America extends much broader than politics. Politics reflects culture. For decades, Americans have been bombarded by the false religion of modern liberalism in the classroom, on TV, at the movies, and through the "news" media. It is no wonder that their indoctrinated subjects vote for statism on election day. Statism has clearly failed over the years, yet a dependent public continues to double down. We have a challenging road ahead of us.

Our country is guilty of mass murder on a scale that dwarfs anything done by Hitler or Stalin or Mao, and all Republicans like Ryun want to talk about is a soulless fiscal conservatism. I also wish conservatives would see Limbaugh for what he is: A bloviating fool. For all his alleged smarts and brilliance, he fell right into the left's trap. Sandra Fluke would have been a one day event if Limbaugh had just kept his mouth shut.
Limbaugh is also the creator of the moronic Limbaugh Rule (vote in the primaries for the most conservative candidate, period) to replace the Buckley Rule (Vote for the most conservative candidate who can win in the general election). The “permanent campaign”?
Where have I heard of THAT?
Why, wasn’t it Bill Clinton who famously spent 8 long years mostly campaigning, and doing some governing? And, NOW, we have the next iteration of Obama, who’s accentuated the campaigning and decreased the governing.
What does that tell you?
Look, the permanent government has passed the tipping point, and there’ll be no going back---short of a cataclysmic political or natural or economical disaster. And, I continue to believe there’s going to be a massive economical correction, that will make the real estate write down look like small beer.
All any future Democratic Party leaders know to do is COPY Obama and Clinton, because their compatriots in the liberal power pyramid will only need cover to continue their permeating takeover of the economy. We are getting to experience fascism, American hate style.
And, the American stupid party, the GOP, has leaders who resemble the farmers who brought on the Dust Bowl. When confronted by worsening problems, they double down on their loser strategy!
Demographics is destiny. So, bring on the illegals, let’s have them vote—for more government as taker!

Democrats did not win the election. Republicans lost it. If the same number that voted for McCain had voted for Romney, Romney would have won. Colorado, Florida,Virginia and Ohio, 67 electoral votes, were lost by less than 500,000 votes, about the same number that Romney would have gotten if the same number of White voters as 2008 had come out.
Mohammed Ali used to say "Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee," meaning if you are not on offense, you are on defense. Republicans must face up to Democrats wanting tax rates raised by allowing defense to be cut and bringing home all but 10,000 of our troops in Afghanistan. President Obama telling our enemies he would leave in 2014 has poisoned the well, making our troops vulnerable and our goals unachievable. The argument being that the troops lives are more important than money. Democrats are going to blame the fiscal cliff on Republicans anyway.
Next Republicans must argue to streamline immigration looking for accomplishment and education rather than chain or family ties. Illegals will be able to work if an employer states no one else will take the job. A path toward citizenship will be available but illegals will be ranked for accomplishment and education and be in line after legal immigrants. Those immigrants whom have served in the armed forces or are children brought here by their parents will have separate paths to citizenship. The southern border will be sealed as part of the process.

So what! Obama's is also increasing and Mc Cain lost his election too.

Many articles I read tell folks what we have to do. We all agree. It is unfortuanate but true that to make this a reality we need leadership to organize the people, without this what you have outlined will never become a reality. I don't see that leader(s) - do you?
Bob K| 11.19.12 @ 7:12PM
Yes and the people who write those articles like to tell us "folks what we have to do." They get paid well and can celebrate if "us folks" listen and the their candidate wins. But if he doesn't it's always "us folks" fault for not listening. That's because "us folks" listened to their candidate instead who was saying things "us folks" did not like. But that is neither his or their fault they argue after the loss.
Who needs them?

If one were to summarize this article in one sentence, it might be "The price of liberty is eternal vigilance".

Go back to Lincoln. Back to Wilson. Back to
FDR. Fast forward to LBJ. Obamacare and
so on.
Yawn...

You're swimming against a rising tide, pal.
Combine demographics with education levels and you've got a losing cause.
A none so well deserved.
The sooner selfish, racist nationalists disappear from the political scene, the better.

Hot Damn right, R. Novy. Fortunately for all of us, Ryun as his fellow-travelers are leading a valiant charge off the cliff... I like coming to this site to see what's going on with the GOP's Dead Enders. The GOP is in civil war, just as we predicted.
Now's the time for the liberal Democrats to press their advantage - in a smart, measured way. The core of our agenda is creating a society where "equality of opportunity" is not an empty slogan. Only when prosperity is more broadly shared, can the economy be put on a long-term trajectory of sustained and sustainable growth. That is the only way to deal with our long-term financial picture, anyway. The bottom line is this: real opportunity now, or class war later.
Albert Constantine Jr.| 11.20.12 @ 2:05PM
You're already doing the class war thing, and as far as your Prosperity broadly shared, I believe your true visionary and prophet already established how he intended to do that with "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need".
