The Obama Watch

Obama’s Smug America

It is always going “forward” no matter how much it declines.

By every objective measure, America is in decline. But liberals insist that it is moving “forward.” The modern philosophy of progress is Darwinian, holding that the latest development, whether of a country or a species, is always the best one. Mutations are assumed to be perfective, not destructive.

Obama is the one “we have been waiting for,” chanted his followers in 2008. They identified him as the agent of the final phase in liberalism’s revolution. In 2012, Obama drew upon this revolutionary hope again, coining “forward” as his campaign slogan. The rhetoric was slightly more subdued — he toned down the talk of “fundamentally transforming” America — but it still rested on the same revolutionary promise. No coherent criterion defines Obama’s notion of revolutionary progress. It is whatever liberalism deems good at the moment. This results in trendy liberal causes clanking up a bit against each other: a progressive, for example, can be at once anti-smoking and pro-marijuana. Second-hand smoke is deadly; but drug legalization poses no harms. Celebrities like comedian Bill Maher burbled over the passage of marijuana legalization bills as part of the new enlightenment under Obama. So apparently the Democrats can be the party of “preventative” health care, anti-obesity campaigns, and recreational drug use all at the same time.

“It is dying but it laughs,” said the Romans of their collapsing empire. The chortling of the Bill Mahers last week deserves a similar line. The smugness seems to grow in proportion to America’s problems and pathologies. Their assertions about Obama’s socialism stimulating the economy or gay marriage strengthening the family are on the same level as their claim that pot is good for public health.

America is not going forward but backwards — back to the “abortion, amnesty, and acid” of George McGovern’s 1970s. Not much has changed since then, except that the radicals who espoused free contraceptives, free love, and drugs now wear expensive suits.

Desperate to win in a declining culture, prominent Republicans have already called for a more “modern” party. It only took a couple of days for them to embrace the wisdom of the Democrats and call for a relaxed abortion stance among other “evolutions.” But why stop there? If the purpose of politics is not to win on sound principles (so that problems can actually be solved when you do win) but to win through pandering, the Republicans should discard their whole platform. After all, fiscal conservatism didn’t fare very well either. America could then move forward even faster toward destruction, with two liberal parties of varying degrees, jostling with each other in a competition to see who can deliver bread and circuses to the mob to greater cheers.

On the day that the British empire lost India its prime minister was said to be at the movies. On the day America lost its consulate in Benghazi David Petraeus was at a private screening for Ben Affleck’s Argo, according to Fox News. But it turns out that he needed to get his mind off more than just America’s decline. He was hiding out from a ticking scandal that would expose a new dimension of it. Not that liberals consider his meltdown evidence of decline. Indeed, they see it as an opportunity for more progress. “Get Petraeus back” and “grow up, America,” say the liberal chorus. In a liberal utopia, runs the argument, no one is subject to blackmail because nothing is a sin to conceal. So a little more education is apparently needed for the American people to take these scandals in stride.

A few liberals suggested America return to the good old days of JFK when the liberal monolith running the media protected celebrated figures. There is even a hint of J. Edgar Hoover nostalgia in the criticism of the FBI’s handling of the matter, as if to say that Hoover ran a more discreet, less oafish agency. Historian Doris Kearns Goodwin mused, “I wish we could go back to the time when the private lives of our public figures were relevant only if they directly affected their public responsibilities.”

The scandal has now widened to include the “inappropriate” e-mails of another general. One would have thought such categories irrelevant to Obama’s sexually liberated military. If sexuality is an inherently undisciplined area of life beyond human control — the premise of the gay liberationist movement — why all the fuss? How is “inappropriate” determined? The proponents of progress never explain such matters. Maybe Obama will punish these wayward womanizers by pursuing a policy of naming more female generals. Lifting all restrictions on women in combat is surely the next progressive goal, a reward Obama could bestow upon them for having received their vote. Gone is the “war on women,” as Obama moves forward toward women in war.

First of all: Who the Hell is Bill Maher?

Seriously. Who is he? Or, would it be more apropo to say: "Who's KID is he?" Because (as with John Leibowitz and that other Homo - Colbert - over at Not Funny Central) none of my Talentmometers can detect the slightest bit of talent coming from his Stupid Mouth.

If you ask me (and even if you don't) he's more of a "Manufactured" quantity. "He's Bill Maher, and he's funny because we say he's funny.

Bill Clinton is a good Family Man who loves his wife, and if all of these Far Right Wing Sluts, Whores, C*nts and B*tches would all just shut their Godd*mn Lying B*tch Mouths, he could get back to the work of being a Loving Husband, and Father to the Ugliest Kid I've ever seen. (Is she still married to that guy who looks EXACTLY like her Father?)

And, Barack Hussein Obama is a Christian, who loves Israel and the Jews, never Apologized for America, never heard his Pastor say all that Sh*t EVERY SUNDAY, doesn't know who Bill Ayers is, and he spends Million$ to keep all of his Pertinent Information sealed in a Vault on a Volcanic Island in the middle of the Pacific, because that's what Everybody Does these days. (But I digress)

Opposite Day. Bizzarro World. Days of Future Past. Back to the Future.

All perfect synonyms for the World of Progressives.

It's a State of Mind wherebye: A Nationwide chain of Slaughterhouses for Unborn Babies, is said to be "Planned Parenthood", when, in reality, it's Murder Incorporated.

Alan| 11.14.12 @ 7:48AM

I'll tell you what Bill Maher is. He's a pompous, arrogant psuedo intellectual, self patronizing godless piece of shit. The kind of shit that can only exist under the kind of rock this culture now exists under. One of the marxists true useful idiots because he relishes being one. A male version of Janeane Garafolo, another blathering humorless twit who thinks she's somehow relevent because she has an orifice to spew noises from.

Fredx| 11.14.12 @ 10:23AM

Several.

Riff Raff| 11.14.12 @ 10:51AM

Bill Maher is unworthy of all this "praise" being heaped upon him. Too much time and energy is being spent trying to describe him, when the task is really very easy. Bill Maher is dirt.

TLP| 11.14.12 @ 8:13AM

It's a State of Mind where the Rottenest, Nastiest, Rudest, Closed-minded, Bigoted, most Self-centered MFers on the Planet, go by the Nomenclature - GAY - even though their Not Happy, at all.

It's where the Catholic Church is an affront to everybody's Vagina, while at the same time, we need to Reach Out to that other "Religion" and do our best to Understand why they Stone their Wives, and Daughters, and Mothers, because they couldn't cobble together 4 Male Witnesses to testify against the Men that their Husband or Father PAID to Rape them. That's: Diversity.

Only in their World can a man Hellbent on returning us to an Agrarian Serfdom reminiscent of the Pre Industrial Age, where are meager Energy Requirements could be easily met by the Light from the Sun, and the Wind in our Sails, be hailed as some Forward thinking Renaissance Man.

They seek to move us Forward to the Days of the All Powerful King. The Infallable State. And the God on Earth Pharaoh. You and I will Sustain ourselves and our Families, with whatever His Majesty - Pharaoh - or The State deigns to allow us to have.

We are on a Trajectory to Progress in to the past, before the Days of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Forward to a Brave New World, where some Pigs are More Equal than others, Newspeak is the Official Language of the Realm, and Comedians don't need to be funny. They only need to be In Sync, and On Message with the Regime.

We're halfway there, already.

But, I digress.

pogybait| 11.14.12 @ 9:43AM

Well, if you ask me Maher and others in hollywood has become our moral compass. Comedians and actors have become our better angles, leading us along the paths of social progress. Even while they are encourage distributing free condoms and gay pride literature outside local elementary schools; they take the time to educate them on how the bourgeois concepts of conservatives are part of the global capitalist plutocracy to exploit the masses. They are truly a force for positive change in America, an evil nation with a greedy past, but with a promising future if it would only follow our leader…..Forward.

Bill8472| 11.14.12 @ 12:52PM

Please tell us how you really feel.

TLP| 11.14.12 @ 3:37PM

I feel like you didn't really put in very much effort, here.

You can do better.

Contest on Friday at Monday's Story on Europe's Jerry Sandusky, in Honour of Purp, Pellaus, and Alan Brooks.

Alan Brooks | 11.15.12 @ 6:13PM

Tim,
you talk of sex more than anyone at AS! I've lost count of how many times you've used the noun 'vagina' here-- well, at least we know you're not gay.

Alan Brooks | 11.15.12 @ 6:15PM

...Tim,
the guys who write most about sex,
do it the least...

Mike in N.C.| 11.15.12 @ 8:19PM

Thanks for sharing your RWNJ id.

Mike in N.C.| 11.15.12 @ 8:31PM

My comment was addressed to TLP

Rhoetus| 11.21.12 @ 11:25PM

Not only is Bill Maher not funny, he's un-origional and a bore. He's a waste of intelligence and not worth the value of the elements his body is made of.

Joellen| 11.14.12 @ 8:10AM

Tim, you know who Bill Mahr is. He's the Intolerant Left who demonizes everyone who isn't bending forward with them. You know Colbert, the CINO who mocks and distorts the Catholic who follows their faith's doctrine. I dont know or care who Lebowitch is; I dont care what any of these punks have to say about me or my values. They dont pay my bills and guess what I wont pay theirs.

And thanks Tim, lets always remind the public of how truly evil the Clintons are. Just in case you didnt know, Hillary will not be around this week to testify because she's celebrating with "friends" by sleeping in and drinking wine - in some other country.

As for the Republican Party who wants to cave in and join the ranks of the Leftist/Demoncrat Party that is exactly why I wrote let's put in Governor Scott Walker to replace Boehner. I read your response Tim, your point is valid (we need him to remain as Governor); my point is replace all RINO's and put in constitutional conservatives and lets really show the difference between the two parties. If it is true 3 million people stayed home, then you know what, maybe they are the ones who saved America. Maybe, just maybe to put in Romney would have been a just a quick fix and we would have continued, albiet, slower, down this path of Bizarro world. With a true Constitutional Conservative President, Senate & Congress, although it may take time to acquire that, it shows that the country on a whole has shifted and true change has begun.

TLP| 11.14.12 @ 10:03AM

I know who he is, Joellen.

But, who IS he, and why would anyone give a Sh*t about the Sh*t that comes outta his Sh*t mouth?

He's Nobody.

In fact - He's LESS than Nobody.

Bob Grant| 11.14.12 @ 8:16AM

To all here who think Bill Maher isn't funny:

D.C. Cab!

You might want to rethink your position.

TLP| 11.14.12 @ 9:27AM

He's not Funny.

I know Funny.

And, he ain't it.

And, I'm Deducting Points from your sure to be Last Place Entry this Week.

Expect my Underpants in the Mail, on Monday.

I'm fishing them out of the Garbage, as we speak.

Albert Constantine Jr.| 11.14.12 @ 9:28AM

The first entries are in at Holland's Penn State.

TLP| 11.14.12 @ 10:09AM

So much for "Contestants Mulling Around" I see.

Are you as Bored with this Bullsh*t, as I am?

Cause, honestly? I can't wait til it's Friday, on Saturday. Let alone Monday and the rest of the week.

Chicken Foot.

Albert Constantine Jr.| 11.14.12 @ 11:43AM

Why wait until contest day? It is like early voting, except in this contest you can enter as often as you like (Insert Purp joke here). Come to think of it, the purpose of early voting is so that Democrats can vote as often as they like.

TLP| 11.14.12 @ 3:29PM

Yeah. But, like Early Voting by Democrats?

How do I know that YOU came up with this Entry?

For all I know, you got it off the Gravestone of some Dead Guy in Dover.

Albert Constantine Jr.| 11.14.12 @ 9:27AM

I was thinking that "Pizza Man" as the high point of his comic acting talent.

TLP| 11.14.12 @ 10:17AM

That's like saying that Hitler had the Trains Running on time. Or, that he loved Animals, the Environment, and Vegetables.

You can't Separate the Man from the Monster.

He's not funny.

I've already Penalized Bob Grants, sure to be Penile-ized upcoming Contest Entry for his misstatements concerning C*NT BOY and the possibility that - like you - he says something Funny on Groundhog's Day, every other Leap Year.

You've been Warned.

Bob Grant| 11.14.12 @ 10:46AM

Come on TLP,

I totally forgot about Pizza Man. Another gem.

Besides, how can a movie suck when it stars Sam Pancake? ...you know, the great writer, director, and actor Sam Pancake?

Actually, I don't either. I just pulled his name off IMDB.

Great name though :-/.

And about cutting my legs off before the contest even starts because of my 'faux pa', my A-game can overcome anything.

My analogies will be so devastating, it's name will be changed to Bob Grants.

I will be on it like 'stink on rice'!

TLP| 11.14.12 @ 3:31PM

Right now, I'm thinking more along the lines of - Grant's Tomb.

If you know what I mean.

Warrior| 11.14.12 @ 10:57AM

Q: How can you identify the bride at Bill Maher's wedding?

A: She's the one biting her toenails.

TLP| 11.14.12 @ 3:33PM

Actually, she's the one eating the Round Thing that she took out of the Urinal.

Occam's Tool| 11.14.12 @ 5:24PM

He's not funny when he writes his own dialogue.

handsoff| 11.16.12 @ 10:41PM

Dialogue means an exchange between 2 separate people. Maher is too stupid to have a dialogue, much less write one, and he doesn't have DID, also too stupid and unconflicted to split into 2 personalities; they would both be too ignorant to tell apart, much less talk to each other.
He has never been funny. All he knows how to do is try to but not succeed in put downs.

Dodd2| 11.14.12 @ 8:21AM

Can divine chastisement be far off?

Cat Shot| 11.14.12 @ 10:38AM

I believe it arrived November 6th.

Von Mises Jr| 11.14.12 @ 9:06AM

The problem with "progressivism" that is based on “Darwinism” is that it also does not account for the “Missing Link.” At what point did a real monkey become a monkey like Bill Maher that tries to tell jokes?

The missing link for society is explained in "The 5,000 Year Leap." It was a combination of Rights that come from God and morality, liberty and free markets.

So for our liberal monkeys to succeed with “progress,” they seem to think that they should destroy mankind and work on developing Cheetah to become Nietzsche’s "Superman." In their thinking, destroying capitalism is the solution that is the equivalent of progressing from ameba to “Superman” without the benefit of the “Missing Link.”

Methinks that this is the major flaw in socialist Darwinian theories.

Immortal 600| 11.14.12 @ 12:59PM

Von, I had AT send you an e-mail. Did you get it. If you aren't interested, I understand. Take care.

Stan Redmond| 11.14.12 @ 1:59PM

Darwanism is a funny thing. It attracts liberals and intellectuals. A truly dangerous combination. It also attract environmentalists, usually liberals. Darwanism is just another tool to be used to move FORWARD! Like so many liberal beliefs it only applies when they want it to. Man evolved from mud, in to amoebas, in to monkeys, and finally in to man. There is consensus and any and all theories otherwise are to be shunned and riddiculed as religious nonsense.

However, in real life all their beliefs go right out the door. ALL plants and animals must be protected from dying out because they can't adapt. Failing businesses must be subsidized and bailed out. Sloth and laziness are rewarded with welfare.

TLP| 11.14.12 @ 3:42PM

It's even worse than that.

In their Real Life, The Survival of the Fittest, and Natural Selection, is the last thing they believe in.

In their World, THE FITTEST must be Punished, Beaten in to the Ground, and Run outta Town on a Rail, after everything has been taken away from them.

Their Jackass Logo needs to be replaced by The Dodo Bird.

For obvious reasons.

Occam's Tool| 11.14.12 @ 5:25PM

No, TLP: It's the Kiwi: a flightless bird that lives in the dark, avoids other animals, is almost defenseless unless it's sneaking up on you and.......(DRUM ROLL) never takes care of its young from the moment they are born. That's right: Kiwis never feed their young.

TLP| 11.14.12 @ 5:41PM

So, Kiwi is a Code Word.

Is that what you're saying?

TLP| 11.14.12 @ 5:43PM

Glad you stuck around, by the way.

You scared some of us.

This too, will pass.

God willing.

Alan Brooks | 11.15.12 @ 6:10PM

TLP,
you should not be reticent in sharing your private thoughts. Open up a bit.

Seek| 11.18.12 @ 10:45AM

Stan: You might be a bit more convincing if you'd spelled "Darwinism" properly, and even better, understood its central principles, which in fact, are much more in line with conservatism than liberalism (e.g., Steve Sailer's contributions to vdare.com).

You know, I became a conservative a couple decades ago because I'd actually believed that it was a repository of realism and intellect. Reading most of the comments on this site require me to issue a mea culpa.

Peppermint Tea | 11.14.12 @ 9:55AM

Bill Maher is only funny in Hell.

You know, the kids in hell because they've had the drugs; they've got someone else to pay for the abortion; they've molested family members and hid it; they've cheated and got away with it; they get stoned and laid; they don't believe there is such a thing as love and commitment. They are cynical; they believe everybody is as depraved as they are. They are, in essence, Charlie FREAKING Sheen wannabees. They think having 3 live-in porn stars is a loving family. They think they are winning.

So they look up from their lives in hell--thinking it is all a personal choice issue--and mock the unprogressive neanderthal church people. They are erudite and smug. Bill Maher is funny to them. It is Berlin in the Twenties. The movie Cabaret describes it perfectly. The end of civilization.

Hey, Liza Menelli is still kicking. Maher should have her on.

cowgirl| 11.14.12 @ 10:18AM

Maher is a great American. A true patriot, a courageous man. You all hate him - which only tells me he's doing something right. He's one of the few liberals who actually calls you Cons OUT. We need a dozen more like him. Hundreds more. If Obama had half this guy's courage, he would have DESTROYED your ideology last term. But Ah, just wait...

Tom Kyba| 11.14.12 @ 10:42AM

Assuming you are not trying to be sarcastic, all you've done is confirm all of the above comments. And by the way, you don't even do sanctimonious with any class or humor. Can you say "bush league"? Sure you can.

junkyard infidel| 11.14.12 @ 11:24AM

tard r loves the hollywood liberal, no talent douchebag, weasel face maher ! imagine that ! bet he's best buds with barry's fisting czar, kevin jennings, too !

Bob Grant| 11.14.12 @ 11:42AM

Ted: I don't hate the guy. I don't think about him much other than when I see a clip of him making an ass out of himself, or an article such as this.

To me, Maher doesn't have a core, he has no values, and his only belief system is his atheism.

The man has misrepresented himself ever since he got that gig on ABC. Remember him back then? The uber-libertarian? Apparently he thought at the time to be cool/his was to be libertarian. It's now in vogue to be socialist, so socialist he is. I laugh when he sometimes refers to himself as a libertarian, which is a flat-out joke!

I despise Maher because I despise people who misrepresent who they really are. Kind of like obama, David Brooks, Colon Powell, David Frum, etc.

Now, I'll give the devil his due. He HAS been courageous calling out the muslim religion. He has not qualms calling it a cult and it's followers a bunch of raging idiots. Very courageous.

So,((( for all you islamists out there, there is a guy named Bill Maher who made a film called "Religulous", which completely denigrates the muslim religion. He even takes a few shots at muhammad! Got it!!! The maker of that stupid video that got you in such a tizzy is in jail BUT BILL MAHER WALKS FREELY, GOT IT!!)))

So there, I gave a little shout out to Bill Maher and at the same time gave bored islamists a homework project.

Bob Grant| 11.14.12 @ 11:44AM

Cor: walks free

Albert Constantine Jr.| 11.14.12 @ 11:49AM

Somewhere from hiding, Salman Rushdie breathes a temporary sigh of relief, and utters a "Thanks" to Mr. Grant. Meanwhile, Theo Van Gogh's film crew will likely be trying to publish Maher's home address on Twitter (hint: don't have Spike Lee re-tweet it for you) to buy themselves some relief from those practitioners of the religion of peace still hunting them.

Bob Grant| 11.14.12 @ 12:18PM

'Peace be With You', Al.

Actually, I've always had a soft spot for bored islamists.

Bob Grant| 11.14.12 @ 12:32PM

I missed the Spike Lee reference on first read.

Very nice, Heh.

Bob Grant| 11.14.12 @ 12:38PM

A Spike Lee address re-tweet could send islamists to G*d knows where. Singer John Mayer could be in mortal danger.

Suggestion to Spike: Less time on the internet, more time on your scrawny ass watching Knicks games!

Joellen| 11.14.12 @ 4:40PM

Tim, what Bob Grant just did should absolve him of any and all sins - GOOD ONE MR. GRANT!

TLP| 11.14.12 @ 5:46PM

Obviously, you don't know him like I do.

Stay away from him, and never mention his name again, if you wanna get into Heaven.

You've been warned.

Bob Grant| 11.14.12 @ 8:23PM

I see how this is played. I'm only good for sicking radical muslims on douchbags.

Otherwise, I'm radioactive.

spike59| 11.14.12 @ 2:29PM

Maher is the worst type of faux intellectual; he's convinced himself that his flatulence is a symphony

TLP| 11.14.12 @ 3:43PM

handsoff| 11.16.12 @ 10:17PM

Ted R., you must be one of the 3 blind, deaf and dumb that still watch or pay any attention to the excremental, misogynistic, profane, uneducated, Maher. I felt the need to be redundant' you need the repitition because you obviously don't get it. Maher hates women, hates everybody but the grating sound of his own voice. He has failed at everything he has tried and now is on the 2nd lowest rated cable show on the lowest rated cable network. You have to have honor and truth to be a true patriot, a great American, a courageous person. He has nothing.....he cannot call anyone out because he understands nothing and is not even funny.....

"By every objective measure, America is in decline. But liberals insist that it is moving 'forward.'"

Forward is just a direction, not a destination. A "vector" if you will. In 1985 Apple Computer ran a TV ad wherein thousands of drones in business suits marched slowly and relentlessly up a mountain only to walk over a cliff, one by one. THEY were moving "forward!" In much the same way the USA is.

Bill8472| 11.14.12 @ 12:19PM

Yeah, he's (Maher, Obama, Bit Me) been calling me out so much I'm quaking in my shoes. I no longer take a single statement uttered by those jack-a-napes seriously. My mother I took seriously when she spoke, but the comedians, the sayers of demopolitcal-speak, forget them. In fact, it's like reading old copies of Doonesbury. Not funny, more like BS. He is not my president, nor is he my Babies' Daddy. And if he your Babie's Daddy, then you're one of the guilty party. I'm not to blame. If you want honesty, remember, your enemy (to be read "me") will be more truthful than your best of worshipping friends.

It’s all about bread and circuses.

Isn’t THAT obvious?

When I was a young pup, and became aware of the wild disparities in the lives of my fellow humans, with me enjoying a life of comfort and security while most others were barely holding on and way too many were even starving to death, or killing each other---well, of course I wanted to “save the world”.

And---NOW?

In America, most people are 24/7 almost totally immersed in both EATING and BEING ENTERTAINED.

Witness your fellow humans when in public, as they waddle around like stuffed pigs, or in wheelchairs as they suffer the results of previous dissipation.

Then there’s the hours spent watching TV and movies, or spent on cell phones mentally jerking off with “friends”.

Narcissus is in his nugatory glory!

Enjoy the END.

Purp| 11.14.12 @ 2:07PM

CJW| 11.14.12 @ 6:27PM

Ok. Looking forward to it.

purpie is like low hanging fruit, almost too easy.

Obama will crash and burn over BenghaziGate. He is arrogant and believes he cannot be hurt because of the MSM, his lapdogs. But the press will now hound him because there is no other story, election is over, and there are always hungry reporters who want to make a name.

Remember, Tingles Matthews made his name on MSNBC trashing Bubba every night over Lewinsky.

Butch| 11.14.12 @ 5:39PM

Hey Purp, Superman Reeves' wife died of lung cancer from excessive pot smoking. Are you going to visit your righteous wrath on pot growers and sellers?

Immutable| 11.14.12 @ 8:35PM

I have lived for 50 years and managed to not grow fat on fast food or contract cancer from smoking. It is a weak individual that abdicates the responsibility of his own body and mind to a government or corporate entity. That's a common mistake liberals make. They prefer to sit back and whine and wait for someone to fix their problems for them instead of using their own brains and practicing some willpower. As if someone physically forces them to eat McDonalds or smoke a Camel. They haven't got the intelligence God gave a fence post.

Purp, my 2% earner friend, get back to making your high income. You're going to need it with all the new taxes your Boy is proposing for people of your income bracket.

Freedomfighter_99| 11.15.12 @ 3:43AM

I'm curious, Purple-ama, do you believe blacks ought o be able to just go out and buy a car and start driving? No plates, registration, insurance or license? I mean, otherwise is that suppression of the mobility of the People? Should they just be able to ask for a credit card and get it with no ID? Please, I'd like an answer. You seem to be the sort of person who would know the right answers to these questions. Thank you.

Bill8472| 11.14.12 @ 12:10PM

Historian Doris Kearns Goodwin obviously has no recollection of the attitude toward divorce and re-marriage that kept Nelson Rockefeller from being nominated for President, or the attitude toward Catholics that resulted in lengthy considerations by Democratics before he was nominated as the Presidential candidate in 1960.

Bill8472| 11.14.12 @ 12:13PM

...and of course there was Edward VIII and Wallace Simpson.

Bill8472| 11.14.12 @ 12:15PM

...but when it came to Monica Lewinski and the ability of Bill Clinton to meet his presidential responsibilities, of course we were much more enlightened. No doubt Ms. Goodwin remembers that bright moment in our cultural and presidential precedents.

Freedomfighter_99| 11.15.12 @ 3:48AM

I'm guessing Ms. Goowin - Plagiarist Supreme - and a lot of her cocktail party soulmates were deeply jealous of Ms. Lewinsky. I'm guessing Doris shed many tears on her pillow thinking of the utter unfairness of it all! Why, the little tramp hadn't even paid her dues to be so honored! The NERVE!!!

Bill8472| 11.14.12 @ 12:16PM

JFK, that is.

She just happened to be in the Dog Position, at the time.

Your party and your philosophy was resoundingly rejected in the election, and you still don't get it, do you?

Yes, the couple of percentage points that separated those who chose destruction as opposed to those who voted against it (not to mention those who didn't vote at all) qualify as resounding.

Thank you for another entry in the Devil's Dictionary, Purp. You continue to serve your purpose to remind us here that so many of those on the left are not just misguided indoctrinees, but vile people who selected a path to try to destroy this country and its people.

This is a one-sided analysis. You can't be a conservative while insisting on a nanny-state "war on drugs" that prevents Americans from deciding how they want to medicate themselves, and prohibits one herb which is much less toxic than another herb which props up the economies of several East Coast states.

If this election did nothing else, it dragged the GOP's internal debate into long-needed light of day. Advocates of the legalization of marijuana (and I voted for Colorado's new legalization law) are tired of being told that the government knows better than we do. If prohibitionists want to keep marijuana illegal, they have to debate us from the left - not the right.

This is just one example of where the Republican Party loses elections - because it tries to win so many issues that could be solved by education, trying to compel good behavior from other Americans again.

Pick one story and get it right - if conservatism is all about letting people make their own decisions as much as possible, then social conservatives must trust other Americans to do just that. If your solution to the issues you're so passionate about is so good, you should be as respectful of other Americans' ability to make decisions about their own bodies (what marijuana and abortion come down to, ultimately) as you want us to be about other Americans' ability to judge how much of their money to give to others.

Albert Constantine Jr.| 11.14.12 @ 5:05PM

I believe to a great extent here you are conflating conservatism and libertarianism (though I don't own the trademark, patent, copyright or any other limits on how anyone chooses to define these or self-identify). While there are points in common in both approaches, they also depart from one another; one of those points is drug legalization, another is the protection of life (particularly of the unborn).

The former was a subject of one of yesterday's articles. The latter gains much attention whenever it comes up.

Today's thread is about the smug attitude that is represented by Obama and his supporter Bill Maher. Either could adopt an identical position to me regarding how drug and other criminal laws should be constructed and enforced, yet would differ from me so much that I would be unlikely to find common cause with them.

Plus, there's this off-putting odor.

Got your prizes stored there?

Ralph Novy| 11.15.12 @ 10:41PM

Actually, Vance, I really don't think that is a "one-sided" analysis. I think it's fairly balanced (not to be confused with "fair and balanced").

I generally consider myself a "liberal," in the tradition of John Stuart Mill but with an extra dose of American anti-authoritarianism thrown in. In other words, I would agree that societies' governmental bureaucracies ought to be about maximizing "letting people make their own decisions as much as possible."

Moreover, I agree that there are some irritating inconsistencies in current "liberal" ideology (yeah, the marijuana/tobacco thing).

However, I do have to take issue with your faith in the haves' disposition to share their capitalistic gains with even those who've helped them, let alone their mere neighbors and/or fellow citizens.

Methinks you fundamentally misgauge human nature on that.

Cheers.

Ralph

Vance P. Frickey| 11.14.12 @ 4:58PM

No one HAS to vote for conservatives. You can insist in as much "ideological purity" as you want, and if your manage to get that through primary debates and national conventions, you'll lose just as many elections as you want to.

High-ranking Republicans had a two-pronged strategy for defeat in election after election - they embraced a weird sort of populism which got the party embarrassingly far from respect for individuals' rights if those rights involved what drugs to take or the very painful choices women faced when pregnant against their will - and moralized in ways that gave Democrats a weapon during elections - another way to lie, most of the time, about how most Republicans feel.

Pick a story and stick with it. Either you respect Americans' rights, all the time, all Americans, or you don't. Don't lie about how you feel on the issue or like Mr. Moulton, you'll say how you really feel in front of an open mike. The Democrats can do what little else is required.

JP| 11.15.12 @ 12:06PM

You're full of it. The GOP as a party ran a classic "values free" campaign and platform. Funny how you tatoo Aikens and Murdock's beliefs to the entire GOP, but do not do so concerning the abortion radicalism of Schumer, Durban, or for that matter Obama. All three endorse infanticide (ie late term abortions). Somehow, the Dems are the reasonable party. Yeah, right. The 2012 elections run by the GOP was essientially about economics First, Second, and Third. Yet, the GOP lost.

As far as women are concerned, they are no better than the "youth vote". Are we to believe that they vote against their interests (lost earnings, lost employment, and higher inflation) in order to stick to the Extreme Right? Or are they just a group of morons whom Obama has convinced through etiher federal lagress or by taking advantage of the vanity to ignore the Dems miserable 4 year record? The "sophisticated" in reality are nothing but ignorant lemmings who are more than willing to listen to the party that strokes their vanity and reinforces their prejudices?

And all the while, the GOP Leadership screams, "More Cowell!"

Ralph Novy| 11.15.12 @ 10:55PM

What, pray tell, is a JP?

Anything like a "Man-Bear-Pig"?

Freedomfighter_99| 11.15.12 @ 3:36AM

"...If sexuality is an inherently undisciplined area of life beyond human control ..."
So, then in Oba-Merica are we headed to a time when pedophilia is cool? Incest? Polygammy? Bestiality? What line are the Advanced One's prepared to draw in the sand, and for how long? Are we talking sand below or above the high-water line? Or is the ultimate goal comlpete license to do whatever feels good? And what if rape makes you feel "good"? Would a rape of a poor black woman and a rich white woman be the same crime or is one a hate crime and the other merely "social justice"?
I'm so confused....

Ralph Novy| 11.15.12 @ 10:20PM

Yes, you're confused.

And not very literate.

And not very nice.

Try to be a smarter, kinder person, please.

Kitty | 11.15.12 @ 6:40AM

America is not going forward and it's not even going backwards. America as we knew it, the America that our ancestors fought and died for, is circling the drain.

WaffenSS| 11.15.12 @ 7:19AM

Sure it will always go forward, has one ever seen something unrot? Things continue to rot until something grows over the rot. Forward? Always.

Mike in N.C.| 11.15.12 @ 12:04PM

George, you are nothing if not consistently tedious. You like to write about liberals embracing marijuana legalization while complaining about the health hazards of second hand smoke. Fair enough. But when it comes to regulating tobacco or alcohol or large sugary drinks that lead to obesity (a major cause of diabetes) you are "all in" for the free market place. Tedious, George, tedious. Heard anything about the beam in one's own eye......

JP| 11.15.12 @ 12:15PM

Exactly. But, the scourge of STDs costs this nation almost as much as heart disease. Do you suggest we tatoo numbers on the foreheads of gays and the libertines? The annual cost of HIV-AIDs treatment is over $80,000 per patient. And that's not counting end of life costs. The costs of treating "normal" STDs can run into the tens of thousands per patient (and we're not just talking about gays).

Every person picks their poison. Smokes, booze, Doritos, or hookups. I suppose at some point in time HHS or a future Bloomberg will apoint a Sex Czar to figure out ways to curb our nations Pirapic ways.

Mike in N.C.| 11.15.12 @ 1:22PM

So, the argument boils down to Republicans wanting to regulate sex and the Democrats wanting to regulate what people eat and drink (excepting marijuana)?

Ralph Novy| 11.15.12 @ 10:18PM

"By every objective measure, America is in decline."

Name one such "objective measure."
