A Further Perspective

From Firestorm to Perfect Storm

The mainstream media’s shameful role in the Benghazi scandal.

Fox News has aired a riveting “timeline” program, showing in painful detail the unfolding of the terror attack in Benghazi. It was a deadly firestorm of a planned assault aimed at the United States consulate, at American sovereign soil. What’s now crystal clear is that the administration had real time information on what was happening, knew that our ambassador and other Americans were in mortal peril, and nonetheless directed response teams to “stand down.” An American ambassador and others defending American soil died horribly. And the President, then leading in the polls, well, he skipped town for a fund raiser in Las Vegas. One would be hard pressed to make up a story more shameful.

The mainstream media have played an almost equally shameful role in the cover up. Even after the latest revelations have been leading the news on Fox and other media, Sunday’s Washington Post had no front page article. What’s more, a search of the entire first section of Sunday’s Post found no article on the Benghazi cover up. There was simply no report whatever on the information, now emerging from many quarters, that contradicts the administration’s (many, and false) statements to the public.

Of course, no one paying attention is surprised by this, for the Post has long been a very partisan supporter of the President in news coverage as well as editorial policy. But many of us who recall the more principled Post of a few decades back continue to be disappointed, not to mention very troubled, that this leading newspaper, and others like it, have so transparently abandoned any “watchdog” role during the reign of an administration much in need of monitoring by an aggressive and objective press.

This point is underscored when one considers the stories now circulating, and which a responsible press would be pursuing in order to fulfill its responsibility to keep citizens informed. For example, the reports that General Carter Ham, who was commander of the U.S. Africa Command, was summarily relieved (i.e., fired) because he made clear he would send special forces teams in response to the calls for help from our embattled countrymen in Benghazi. Within moments the General’s second in command told him that he was taking over, that the General was relieved. This is scandalous, but apparently not news “fit to print” for our mainstream press.

For comparison, consider the administration’s response to Hurricane Sandy’s approaching landfall. As with the firestorm in Libya, the “perfect storm” now off the east coast is hard to assess, its future path difficult to predict. Yet our President was all over the national news shows today, pledging to be there and to deploy all sorts of people and equipment to assist even before the event. The President said that Americans “pull together” and “help one another” in times like this, and he professed that supervising reaction to the hurricane is more important than mere campaigning.

How nice it would have been if he had felt the same way on September 11, when Americans were being murdered in Benghazi. But he was ahead in the polls, and Las Vegas beckoned.

There are surprising similarities between Panetta, Hillary and Obama with Tropical Storm Sandy. You have a lot of hot air, big winds that are sure to culminate in a blow hard.

Aristocat| 10.29.12 @ 7:00AM

No story here....Check out "Argo"...At least the Iranians didn't kill Americans like Al Queda did in
Libya. Brave Americans abandoned to die by Obama.

Bill8472| 10.30.12 @ 10:11AM

In the Bowen book, Guests of the Ayatollah, one of the Revolutionary Guard is said to have talked to the hostage diplomats, asking if they thought him participating in the diplomat-kidnaping outrage would interfere with his going to graduate school in the U.S.

I laughed out loud when I read about that particular congitive disconnect. Of course, it was only a disconnect in the context of the Carter/Reagan years, not the Obama years.

C. Vernon Crisler | 10.29.12 @ 1:18PM

Another possibility is that there was an arms transfer going on from Lybia to Turkey to the Syrian rebels that Obama is trying to keep under wraps. Catherine Herridge mentioned something like that last night. Maybe Romney is not attacking Obama on Lybia because he knows about this national security issue.

If this doesn't pan out, then the only thing left is incompetence or dishonesty. I'm betting on the latter.

C. Vernon Crisler | 10.29.12 @ 1:19PM

Regarding the sacking of Gen, Ham -- I've seen mention of it, but also remarks that his tour was up. Have I missed something that's more definitive?

Nina in MA| 10.29.12 @ 12:36PM

Seems a little coincidental, dontchya think? The middle of an uprising, he's offered to go in and then in the middle of the "riots" in Libya, he gets relieved?

Here's the most complete discussion I can find that speaks to the facts around Gens Ham and Dempsey:

Aaron Klein (WND senior staff reporter and Jerusalem bureau chief) recently chided America's journalistically challenged media regarding their persistent reference to U.S. "consulate" in Benghazi. He also notes that U.S. officials not only failed to correct the misconception, but subtly subordinated it. Klein further reminds us that the State Department website lists no consulate in Benghazi:

The U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, actually served as a meeting place to coordinate aid for the rebel-led insurgencies in the Middle East, according to Middle Eastern security officials. Among the tasks performed inside the building was collaborating with Arab countries on the recruitment of fighters – including jihadists – to target Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria.

Since the mission was attacked last month, countless news media reports around the world have referred to the obscure post as a U.S. consulate. That theme continues to permeate the media, with articles daily referencing a “consulate” in Benghazi.

U.S. officials have been more careful in their rhetoric while not contradicting the media narrative that a consulate was attacked.

In his remarks on the attack, President Obama has referred to the Benghazi post as a “U.S. mission.” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has similarly called the post a “mission."

Brubaker| 10.29.12 @ 12:20PM

During testimony before Congress, Regional Security Officer Eric Nordstom made specific reference to the "consulate" in Benghazi. I suspect he knows a bit about the facilities under his purview.

Appleby| 10.29.12 @ 7:25AM

Hurricane victims vote. Bengazi victims do not. Naturally Obama is all over the hurricane, handing out the goodies.

TLP| 10.29.12 @ 10:23AM

Neither do Military Personnel, which is why they never get their Ballots on time from any of the Blue States.

Nina in MA| 10.29.12 @ 12:45PM

I'm sure Obama is hoping this takes the focus off Benghazi...he's going to save the day by declaring Sandy is a "bad storm"! Is it even classified as a hurricane at this point? Oooph, forgot...the lefties need someone to tell them to get the hell out of dangerous situations cuz they don't have enough common sense to know better!

RCV| 10.29.12 @ 6:52PM

Only this group of misfits could fault the President for being concerned with American hurricane victims. What a bunch.

Butch| 10.29.12 @ 7:25PM

He's not concerned with them; their votes are locked up. He's concerned with "looking Presidential" before voters in the swing states. If you think this bird has any other priority than winning this election you have another think coming. Isn't that obvious by now?

merlin| 10.29.12 @ 7:34PM

RCV, so what do you think happened in Benghazi? Were Americans abandonded when help was available or not? Why was Obama and the rest unwilling to help? Are you mildly curious? Sending help would have made Obama a hero and maybe greatly help his chances for reelection. Why didn't he? Instead there is a great anti-Obama ad waiting to be published. Something along the lines of Tyrone Woods holding the lazer gun or a rifle with a slightly surprised look on his face. Obama standing behind him with the hilt of a knife showing. The caption: Obama - he's got your back.

Do you have any idea how furious many of us are?

And to answer Biden's question. Well, at least larger than your, Obama's, Hillary's and Panetta's combinded.

RCV| 10.29.12 @ 11:16PM

The only reason you're even mildly interested in the issue is because you might be able to score political points off it. The notion that the President would deliberately do something to cause harm to American diplomats, including his personal friend, is not only ludicrous, it's a disgusting charge, and one that shows how low your kind has stooped. One has to wonder why your venom isn't directed at the terrorists this President has been working relentlessly to hunt down and eliminate, rather than the President of our country. Do you have any idea how sickening the rest of us find your attempt to politicize this tragedy?

Joellen| 10.29.12 @ 7:27AM

SCMike - that's the problem, we will never know the truth with the likes of the NY Times, Washington Post, any Gannett paper, MSNBC, NBC, CBS, etc., etc. Heck, if it werent for Matt Drudge, the media would have ignored Clinton's molestation of various woman, and still to today never acknowledge that he raped Juantia Brodwick. The mainstream media is a threat to our security and when we put in a new President/Senate/Congress, this must be addressed and they (mainstream media) must be held accountable for their treacherous deeds.

SCMike| 10.29.12 @ 7:59AM

Understood, agree. I was just looking for something more authoritative, but such bits are usually hard to come by when the MSM are so incurious.

SUBVET| 10.29.12 @ 9:46AM

The question is will the american people buy into this BS or stand up on election day.

All of this "he knew" crap is part of the confusion and miss direction while they steal votes.

KennesawJack| 10.29.12 @ 10:15AM

Joellen, on Wednesday, November 7th, the day after Romney is elected, you will find the msm falling over themselves to get out the 'breaking story" of "Benghazigate". Once their boy is gone, they will lather themselves with layers of "truth and objectivity" and claim devotion to fairness in reporting. Trust me, it's coming and the fun will be watching whether they throw Hillary or Obamarx under the bus first. My bet is Obamarx gets pilloried.

Joellen| 10.29.12 @ 11:55AM

I dont know KennesawJack, do you remember them trying to report "truth and objectivity" for Presidents Reagan, and the two Bushes. They are communist and they are evil and just like the communist democrat party, they must be replaced with true Americans who are there to serve one purpose - to protect America/the Constitiution from foreign and evil entities.

KennesawJack| 10.29.12 @ 1:37PM

With Republican Presidents they never have a need to cover their a**es. With this buffoon, whom they blindly supported for 4+ years they will have not choice. They will throw him to the wolves and Hillary, if she has any ambitions towards 2016, will help do the tossing. They are scurrilous rats and they will fall all over themselves abandoning the sinking ship that is Obamarxism.

I'm still confused about the General Ham firing. If he did attempt to circumvent WH orders to stand down, and he was relieved of command on the spot he would have been gone 6 weeks ago.

I think his demotion goes deeper. The Commander of Task Force Stennis was also relieved. And his taks force if I am not mistaken was not on station during the Benghazi attacks. These 2 demotions occured at the same time. Perhaps it is just coincidence, perhaps not.

The American media are corrupt to the core. The entire collective bunch of whores have no shame left or any self respect.
A few of my squishy R friends this past weekend have had their eyes finally opened after watching Brian Williams' disgusting "interview" with Obozo.
They finally admitted what their minds were telling them, but their hearts were denying, that the media are frauds and liars for Obozo and the Ds.
I told them they simply did not want to believe the worst about these people, but once they finally breeched their intellectual fire wall, it will dawn on them that it had been obvious for decades. They were in shock, as hard as that is to believe.
We need some wholesale changes in our culture, starting with the election, and I think people are finally waking up.

I'm sure this generalization doesn't apply to you.

c. j. acworth| 10.29.12 @ 10:27AM

I've read in a couple of places that the two former SEALs who died trying to defend the place tagged about 60 of their attackers. Also, there was an AC-30 SPECTRE gunship on station that was NOT allowed to open fire, even though one of our guys was painting a target with a laser. I can't wait to read the final definative account of their last hours. Somebody should hang for this.

Hannibal Lector was not wearing a hockey mask. That contraption looks something more along the lines of Datewear for Purp.

That is to say if Purp, The Gimp, one of the 'good ole boys' from Deliverance, and Boy George double dated, two of the four would be wearing one.

The troubling question in WHY would General David Patraeus testify on Capitol Hill that what drove these attacks was the internet video and deny the possibility of a coordinated attack?

This is very troubling, especially considering many believed - myself included - that he was one of a handful of honorable men in Washington.

I suppose we should have taken heed of the red flag when he accepted the CIA position by the most dishonorable president in modern history.

He seems to be nothing more than a military careerist and not that person we put on a pedestal.

Very disappointing.

I just wish General Ham will come forward and tell his story in the next few days.

Von Mises Jr| 10.29.12 @ 11:21AM

General Petraeus just threw Obama under the bus. He said denying the Ambassador, his information specialist and the two marines aid did not occur at the CIA.
Since it is the duty of the Military and CIA to assist our people in need, the stand down command had to come from the top.
I think the General is doing the best he can given that he reports to a communist Commander-and-Thief.

KennesawJack| 10.29.12 @ 11:37AM

Unfortunately,

The 'October Surprise', or more likely Black Swan Event, looks to be Hurricane Sandy.

Armageddon occurs and obama steps in as the leader who "saves the day".

He will be portrayed as the Anti Hurricane Katrina Bush.

Meanwhile, another week passes without the mainstream media covering one of the biggest coverups/incompetencies in our country's history. Heck, they are even considering cancelling the jobs, economic reports, most likely to obama's disadvantage, because of the hurricane.

There's your October Surprise.

Bob Grant| 10.29.12 @ 12:05PM

Then how do you explain him going to Capitol Hill and testifying that the reason for the embassy attacks were response to the video and not a planned attack?

Why was he - like obama, clinton, panetta, carney, etc - so quick to blame the video when the more likely reason was a pre-planned attack?

He wittingly or unwittingly fed into the false narrative and thus became a cog in the Obama Lying Machine.

Shame on him.

Now it's up to Gen. Carter to step up and tell the story.........AND PRONTO!!!

Is there a connection to Fast & Furious and to our DOJ? Quit skirting around the borders of this situation and report on the truth and the intrical details of this operation and our government's involvement in same!!!!!!!!!!!

Bill8472| 10.29.12 @ 12:40PM

Better be careful about complaining too much about the MSM covering up for the Obama administration; if a Republican president does something similar in the future, the journalistic furor over that will be attributed to the press's ever-so-virtuous having "learned its lesson" from the Benghazi flap.

Bob Grant| 10.29.12 @ 12:45PM

Umm yea,

Funny how it always works that way. Isn't it?

Nina in MA| 10.29.12 @ 1:00PM

If a republican president does something similar to this in the future, he deserves to be crucified in the press...just because he didn't learn from this! Hopefully, a republican president will have the intestinal fortitude it takes to save our people from being murdered, from the possibility of supplying aid to our enemies, from being a muslum/islamic sympathizer, from cutting our military spending so we are essentially defenseless in an ever expanding world of hate, technology and military might....

Bill8472| 10.29.12 @ 5:07PM

You're right; it was a poor use of words. What I meant was if something happens where the MSM wants to pick a Republican President apart piece by piece, they'll justify it by saying they learned from being reamed out over the Benghazi incident.

Nina in MA| 10.29.12 @ 12:55PM

Everything is going to be okay folks! Obama just made a tv announcement for where we can all go get our free stuff in case we get displaced by Sandy! You know, that hard wind blowing up the coast? He has everything under control...this is at most a Cat 1? He can handle that....at least MA is covered with state of emergency declaration....hold on a minute....i gotta go stick my head in the toilet!

Bill8472| 10.29.12 @ 5:10PM

Have you noticed that the high wind speed of Sandy is 74 mph, the lowest wind speed that allows the Weather Service to categorize it as a hurricane?

Surely everyone who doesn't have an agenda has noticed that Sandy is off the coast by a couple of hundred miles and is about to be hit by a storm blowing in an easterly direction, so Sandy might be pushed off the U.S. coast entirely?

That hurricanes lose their wind speed and start to come apart shortly after making landfall?

I mean, it might be bad, but there's a pretty good likelihood that it'll just be high winds and lots of rain. But to listen to these idiots, the wrath of God is about to hit.

Probably because it's Noo Yawk, the Holy of Holies.

Bill8472| 10.29.12 @ 5:17PM

I mean, 74 mph winds are strong winds, but jeez, hardly unheard of. We're talking about a storm that is ONE mile per hour above being downgraded to a tropical storm.

Butch| 10.29.12 @ 7:40PM

I live in SE CT where the world is supposedly coming to a cataclysmic ending while our Dem governor publicly pees himself on an hourly basis. Yes, it’s been windy enough to drop some trees, and coastal areas that have flooded before are flooding again, but the barometer is rising, the wind gusts are dropping off, and the power has stayed on all day. Irene was worse, but this time we have the MSM to remind us that only Teh One can save us!

KennesawJack| 10.29.12 @ 9:04PM

Tingle's opening monologue tonight was something to the effect that Obmarx (my spelling, not his) is used to managing cataclysmic storms as he inherited the storm of recession from Bush so he can certainly steer us through this one. Sick, sick, sick. And Tim, before you ask, whenever I need a chuckle, I turn to Tingles for a moment or two. Never fails.

Sit them down, PUT them under oath and if they lie, they will be prosecuted, and if convicted, they will go to prison for perjury..
AND if a lower level person wants immunity to make a deal, you give them immunity if they TELL ALL and cooperate COMPLETELY. Then you just follow the evidence and the rest it the rest. What did you know and when did you know it? Very simple. Very basic. And the Boob will be out of office and will not be able to claim Executive Privledge. Nixon is told he cannot do this for a third rate goof ball burlary. But Obama does it when hundreds are murdered with Assault Weapons supplied by the Administration to the Mexican Drug Cartels? I think not.

The liberal press can continue to carry the water for Obama but they're just cutting their own throat. This is why newspaper after newspaper continues to lose advertisers and especially readers. The number of people taking a daily newspaper has shrunk so badly within another five, or ten years we will see many more reducing staff, days printed or even go all web (like the silly Newsweek). They are just hastening their own demise...
