Most of the criticism aimed at Joe Biden relating to his
disgraceful performance in last Thursday’s VP debate has related to
his transparent lie about what the Obama administration knew about
the September 11 terrorist attack on our Benghazi consulate. But
that was by no means the only whopper of consequence he told during
the debate. Another lie that may cause nearly as much damage to his
boss’s re-election prospects involves the one he told about
Obamacare’s contraception mandate. Whereas his tale about the
September 11 attack thwarted the MSM’s attempt to bury the Benghazi
story, what he said about the contraception mandate actually
disinterred a story they thought they had safely deep-sixed until
after the election.
Toward the end of the debate, the candidates were asked to
discuss “what role your religion has played in your own personal
views on abortion.” As part of his response, Paul Ryan pointed out
that the Obama administration is using Obamacare to assault our
religious liberties: “They’re infringing upon our first freedom,
the freedom of religion, by infringing on Catholic charities,
Catholic churches, Catholic hospitals.” He was, of course,
referring to the infamous HHS edict requiring employers to provide
insurance that pays for abortion drugs, contraception, and
sterilization. Predictably, Ryan’s comment elicited one of the
85 interruptions whereby America’s crazy uncle transformed the
debate into a 90-minute exhibition of boorish bluster and
balderdash.
When Ryan was permitted to finish, Biden weighed in on the issue
with characteristic mendacity: “With regard to the assault on the
Catholic church, let me make it absolutely clear, no religious
institution, Catholic or otherwise, including Catholic Social
Services, Georgetown Hospital, Mercy Hospital, any hospital, none
has to either refer contraception, none has to pay for
contraception, none has to be a vehicle to get contraception in any
insurance policy they provide. That is a fact.” This claim
obviously bears no resemblance to “fact.” As the Heritage
Foundation promptly pointed out, “The real ‘fact’ about the
anti-conscience mandate is that it applies to almost all employers
—including many religious organizations such as hospitals and
social service providers.”
And the response to Biden’s bald-faced lie was not limited to
dispassionate analysis by conservative think tanks. On October 12,
the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued a statement
denouncing the VP’s deceptive comments in no uncertain terms. The
statement specifically referred to the Catholic organizations cited
by Biden himself and used them as evidence that his words were not
remotely factual: “The HHS mandate contains a narrow, four-part
exemption for certain ‘religious employers.’ That exemption was
made final in February and does not extend to ‘Catholic social
services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital,’ or
any other religious charity that offers its services to all,
regardless of the faith of those served.”
The USCCB is, in fact, showing some reserve in its use of the
adjective “narrow” to describe the exemptions the Obama
administration was generous enough to include in its imperial
edict. As the Archbishop of Washington
described the phony “accommodation” made by the President when
the contraception mandate produced predictable public outrage,
“HHS’s conception of what constitutes the practice of religion is
so narrow that even Mother Teresa would not have qualified.” The
Obama administration is, as Paul Ryan succinctly put it despite
repeated interruptions by Biden and more than a few from the very
moderator who was ostensibly there to prevent such boorish
nonsense, “assaulting the religious liberties of this country.”
Ryan also directed the following question to Biden, after being
interrupted yet again: “Why would they keep suing you?” This was a
reference to a series of lawsuits filed against the Obama
administration by a wide variety of high-profile Catholic
organizations, including the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. and
the University of Notre Dame, pursuant to a federal contraception
mandate that Biden had just said doesn’t force religious
organizations to “pay for contraception” or “has to be a vehicle to
get contraception in any insurance policy they provide.” The
debate’s “moderator” came to Biden’s rescue on that unanswerable
question by demanding of Ryan, “If the Romney-Ryan ticket is
elected, should those who believe that abortion should remain legal
be worried?
That interruption saved Biden from answering Ryan’s question,
but it didn’t remove the lawsuits. And these suits are by no means
limited to Catholic institutions. In July, Judge John Kane of the
U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado issued an order
forbidding the government from taking action against Hercules
Industries for refusing to provide contraceptive coverage to its
employees. The plaintiffs argue, as do the Catholic institutions
cited by USCCB, that the contraception mandate violates their First
Amendment right to religious freedom. And, as if to provide a
preview of the kind of justice we can expect to receive in this
country if Biden and his boss are re-elected, their government
lawyers argue that
the plaintiffs have no claim to this fundamental right because they
operate a for-profit business.
The usual suspects on the left appeared to be happy with Biden’s
obnoxious debate performance. And Obama campaign spokeswoman, Clo
Ewing, doubled down on his preposterous statement about the
contraception mandate: “President Obama and Vice President Biden
believe standing up for women’s health… no religious institution
will have to refer, provide, or pay for contraception.” This
position, to coin a phrase, is worse than a crime, it’s a mistake.
Among the states that both campaigns covet this year is Florida,
home to many Catholic Hispanics. Recent
polls show Romney cutting into Obama’s support among that
voting bloc. Biden’s braying about the contraceptive mandate will
not have slowed that trend.
The United States is among the most religious countries on the
planet. The Obama administration’s assault on religious liberty in
an election year was a dumb call. With the collusion of the “news”
media, however, they probably thought they had succeeded in burying
the issue until after the election. But America’s crazy uncle, in
addition to drawing attention to the Benghazi blunder, has managed
to raise the contraception mandate from the dead as well. Joe is
the best man on our team.

I hope this issue is raised again in the "debate" tomorrow night. It is absolutely disgusting that Mr. Biden calls himself a Catholic when he not only holds so many anti-Catholic views and that he looks into the camera and lies so blatantly and obviously and consistently about this subject. Biden has been banned from receiving the sacraments of the Church because of what he has espoused and what he has done. Apparently, there is a disconnect between the definition of truth in the dictionaries of the world, and that which lives in Joe Biden's so-called mind. Be not deceived: God is not mocked. God KNOWS what the truth is, Joe.
Darin| 10.15.12 @ 7:06AM
Interesting how Biden says he does not want to impose his "Catholic morality" regarding abortion but has no problem imposing his "Catholic morality" regarding welfare programs. Of course, Biden ignores the fact that Christ's commands to help the poor were personal. We are to give from our OWN pockets, not give from OTHERS pockets.

There is a bumper sticker that reads, "Obama isn't a brown-skinned anti-war socialist who gives away free healthcare. You're thinking of Jesus."
Again and again, people have tried to reduce Jesus to someone other than who the Bible says He is: the Jewish Messiah, God, and the sin-bearing Savior of everyone who puts their faith (obedient trust) in Him. For example, John 4:25-26; John 8:56-58; and John 3:14-18.
I guess that His true identity and purposes are irrelevant or inconvenient for some folks.

Von Mises Jr| 10.15.12 @ 7:46AM
Jesus spoke of the "Poor in spirit." Yesterday's Catholic Gospel was about the rich man whom approached Jesus and asked what he must do to gain Heaven. When the man confirmed that he had kept the Commandments, Jesus told him he must sell everything and follow him. The man left dispirited.
Christ was not saying that money or material goods were bad or evil. He was telling the man "love of money" is the root of all evil. The rich man has a better chance of passing through the eye of a needle than reaching Heaven since he puts himself and materialism first. Christ said you cannot serve two Gods.
For liberals, they put their hubris and pride first. They reject prudence and wisdom for vanity. This is another reason I do not suffer them well.
And while you are correct about personal sacrifice, Darin; it is not money that we must focus on. Liberals rarely offer charitable works either. Some celebrities and politicians organize charity for their own aggrandizement. But the true charitable man does not display his works, but simply quietly helps others without seeking kudos.
John Navratil| 10.15.12 @ 8:57AM
Von Mises Jr,
Could a certain candidate for President serve as an example of quiet charity?
Von Mises Jr| 10.15.12 @ 9:46AM
Mitt donated an additional 15% of his income to his Church after paying about the same in taxes. It was not an issue until the left demanded his tax returns. Then we hear from people he helped personally where money did not necessarily change hands.
Steve Wynn was also demonized by the regime. He created 250K jobs and donates 120% of his income and bonuses to charity.

And I do agree with you on the points you are making...
KyMouse| 10.15.12 @ 4:57PM
Acknowledging the same Gospel readings is great, but what is our authority for faith and practice -- Roman Catholic teaching, or the Bible? Are God's graces dispensed by the Church, or are they freely available directly from God for everyone who puts their faith (obedient trust in Jesus)? Are we saved by faith plus works, or only through faith in Jesus? Do we have many mediators, including Mary and the saints, or is Jesus our only mediator?
These and other questions are crucial.
Nick| 10.16.12 @ 1:37AM
I will attempt to, briefly, answer your several questions, KyMouse.
"[...] but what is our authority for faith and practice -- Roman Catholic teaching, or the Bible?"
The teachings of the Catholic Church come from Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition (cf 2 Thess. 2:14 ff), which is called the Deposit of Faith. The Deposit of Faith is guarded by the Magisterium (Teaching Authority) of the Church (cf. 1 Tim. 6:20).
Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium have been referred to as "the three legged stool" of the Catholic Church, because Christ's Church cannot stand without all three.
"Are God's graces dispensed by the Church, or are they freely available directly from God for everyone who puts their faith (obedient trust in Jesus)?"
It depends to which graces you are referring. Baptism is normally dispensed by the Church, but, can be performed by the laity in an emergency. The Catholic Church also recognizes the baptisms of several Christian denominations. Intercessory prayer bestows God's graces on those who pray on behalf of others.
"Are we saved by faith plus works, or only through faith in Jesus?"
"So faith also, if it have not works, is dead in itself." - James 2:17 (See also 1 Tim. 6:18)
Nick| 10.16.12 @ 1:38AM
Continued...
"Do we have many mediators, including Mary and the saints, or is Jesus our only mediator?"
No, the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Choir of Saints are intercessors, not mediators (cf 1 Tim. 2:1 ff). Christ is our only mediator.
Hope that helps.
God Bless!

Ms. Raddatz lap danced Biteme for 90 minutes to insure this buffoon didn't make more of a complete ass of himself, then he did. She failed. Candy Crowley however, as a heavyweight card carrying whore of the MSM in good standing, will employ a similar tactic on behalf of Obozo.
In this debate, she'll be the one doing the lap dancing, but it will be to crush poor Romney, as opposed to pampering him.

I have had only one experience with prostitutes. It was this:
On a business trip through Nevada with a co-worker we happened to drive by the Mustang Ranch while it was still in operation. My co-worker, had been with the firm for several years, I was a new hire, insisted that we stop in just to look. I had no leverage, he was at the wheel. So I had no choice. After getting buzzed in through the barbed wire fence, we were led to a large carpeted bar area. There was a line of prostitutes standing there greeting us. I said that I was not interested, and sat down at the bar, ordering one very expensive drink. My co-worker asked the quintessential question, 'How much?' The reply was, 'you have to pick a girl and go to her room to find out.' He picked and went. At this point, one of the women sat down next to me at the bar trying to make a sale. I was polite but resolute in my refusal. She went. My co-worker came back 10 minutes later and we left. I didn't finish the drink - it was horrible.
My recollections are three:
It reeked like a deodorant cake in a cheap gas station urinal.
The women looked decidely forlorn.
Candy Crowley would not have fit into the lineup - in any way, shape, or form. None was that fat, ugly, or old.

PS. I made it a point to avoid road trips with that co-worker in the future.
PPS The movie about the Mustang Ranch had a scene that corresponded quite closely to my recollection of the place and the experience.

Because there is, as any math major could tell you, a one-to-one homomorphism between them. Of course, it’s tough to name who the pope is for the MSM, but is there any doubt that there is a well-defined hierarchy for both Catholics AND the MSM?
There are Cardinals, priests, lay officials, Bishops, etc---hey, my maternal grandmother was named Bishop. Why, I can even picture the conquistadors, say a Cortez, in the New World, using sword and gun to “convert” heathens.

Of course Biden did not lie. The policy requires insurers, not institutions, to provide contraceptive coverage. About half of all states already required this so this is a lot of fuss about not very much. Here is the policy:
– Religious organizations will not have to provide contraceptive coverage or refer their employees to organizations that provide contraception.
– Religious organizations will not be required to subsidize the cost of contraception.
– Contraception coverage will be offered to women by their employers’ insurance companies directly, with no role for religious employers who oppose contraception.
– Insurance companies will be required to provide contraception coverage to these women free of charge.

"Covering contraception is cost neutral since it saves money by keeping women healthy and preventing spending on other health services. One study found that covering contraception saved employees $97 per year, per employee."

All Y'all are missing the real point about government insurance mandates...The question we should be axin' is, "By what Constitutional Authority does the Federal Government get to decide the contents of a contract freely entered into"...to wit...Where do they get off telling insurance companies what they will cover. Coverage is the result of negotiation between the insured and the insurance company. The only interest the government has in that arena, is contract...period. enforcement

mike 3/505,
When people start buying their own policies there will be a demand for that. As it is, the states mandate the coverage, the employer shops for the best rate for one of a small handful of options, and the worker takes what he gets.
How many people will write to their Congressman and complain that their employer has given them a Hobson's choice of buying insurance which isn't exactly what they wants (think contraception) or nothing? The letter they DO write is that insurance is too expensive and the government should do something about it.

All the states below - 28 - have required contraception in plans for some time John, with similar exemptions for you religious/far right freaks. There's been no massive outcry until the freaks decided it's good to get Obama on.

Yes, the states may legislate such issues, not the federal government, under the Tenth Amendment. If you don't like contraception legislation in North Carolina, you're free to move to Tennessee, South Carolina, or Wyoming.

John,
You are correct Sir...except to one thing.....Why do people need to go through their employer? Answer...because the employer subsidizes the policy...therefore, as the primary "owner," it's the employer's call as to what policies he/she will pay for. Problem with this whole shebang, is that folks who pay the least for the service, insurance or government, are the ones who gripe the most about that service.
Jack...regarding your little missive...Constitution 101 clearly says that the States have different authorities than does the Federal government...not that I agree with their interference in private contracts either. If we could get both the federal government and the collective state governments out of this business and confine them to their true roles, health care and by extension health insurance would be a lot cheaper and a lot more effective.
Regards,
Mike
