Campaign Crawlers

Crazy Uncle Joe

Democrats cheer Biden’s debate antics, but Ryan scores better overall.

Vice President Joe Biden took Americans on a one-way trip to Malarkey-ville last night, with a weirdly aggressive debate performance in which, according to one count, he interrupted his Republican rival 86 times. Even many of those who generally approved of what Democrat spinners referred to as Biden’s “happy warrior” act expressed concern that the vice president was, to quote CNN’s Gloria Borger, “condescending at times” toward Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan.

Make that “condescending at all times,” and you may have a consensus that would include even the debate’s liberal moderator, Martha Raddatz of ABC News. Biden’s behavior resembled the hypomanic phase of bipolar disorder, as he grinned incongruously or faked laughter in reaction to Ryan’s answers, rudely scoffed at the Republican’s policy proposals as “bluster” and “loose talk,” and bulldozed past whatever feeble attempts Raddatz made to halt his repeated filibusters.

Arrogant? Overbearing? Angry? If those are your ideal qualities in a vice president, Biden’s your man. In the inevitable post-debate panel discussions over who “won” the debate, even conservative discussants generally credited Biden with having accomplished his basic mission, namely to counteract the demoralization among Democrats caused by President Obama’s tepid and listless debate performance last week against Mitt Romney. (See “Mitt’s Biggest Turnaround Yet,” Oct. 4.) Biden’s aggressive tactics against Ryan were cheered by the Democratic “base,” by which term of course I mean, Chris Matthews.

“A clear victory for Joe Biden, looking at the key issues people care about,” Matthews enthused on MSNBC after the debate ended, without bothering to explain how he knows which issues are “key.” However, CNN’s post-debate “flash” poll showed viewers narrowly favoring Ryan, 48 percent to 44 percent for Biden, and also scored Ryan the more “likeable” of the two candidates, by a 53-43 margin. On Fox News, meanwhile, conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer was reluctant to award the win to Ryan, saying the youthful House Budget Committee chairman showed “excessive deference” to Biden. Yet Krauthammer also criticized Biden, describing the vice president’s manner as “disrespectful.” At the conservative Hot Air site, the blogger known as Allahpundit summarized the debate in a headline: “Angry old man yells at Paul Ryan for 90 minutes.”

Was the debate, therefore, a win-win? Not exactly. Grant that Biden achieved his goal of halting the panic that set in among Democrats after Romney mopped the floor with Obama in last week’s debate. Still, the vice president’s hectoring performance Thursday in Danville, Kentucky, wasn’t likely to endear him to undecided voters. Meanwhile, what Krauthammer called Ryan’s “deference” enabled the Republican to counteract the demonized image of him as a heartless budget-slasher that Democrats would like to exploit. Pleasant and calm, yet firm and clearly well-prepared, Ryan established himself as competent and charmingly human, never losing his cool while Biden lectured and berated him.

The tone of the debate was set early, when Raddatz began by asking Biden whether last month’s terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, represented an “intelligence failure.” The vice president spoke four sentences about Libya before going off on a tangent, defending Obama’s record (and attacking Romney’s position) on Afghanistan and on foreign policy generally. Obama “has led with a steady hand and clear vision; Governor Romney, the opposite,” Biden said before concluding with a non sequitur: “The last thing we need now is another war.”

Ryan pounced: “When you take a look at what has happened just in the last few weeks, they sent the U.N. ambassador out to say that this was because of a protest and a YouTube video. It took the president two weeks to acknowledge that this was a terrorist attack. He went to the U.N., and in his speech at the U.N. he said six times — he talked about the YouTube video. Look, if we are hit by terrorists, we’re going to call it for what it is, a terrorist attack. Our ambassador in Paris has a Marine detachment guarding him. Shouldn’t we have a Marine detachment guarding our ambassador in Benghazi, a place where we knew that there was an al-Qaida cell with arms? This is becoming more troubling by the day. They first blamed the YouTube video; now they’re trying to blame the Romney-Ryan ticket for making this an issue.”

Ryan went on to talk about Afghanistan and Iraq. Raddatz then questioned Ryan about Romney’s initial reaction to the Libyan attack, but Ryan’s answer was interrupted by Biden. “Am I going to get to say anything here?” the vice president asked and, after Ryan attempted to continue, Biden interrupted again. “With all due respect, that’s a bunch of malarkey,” Biden declared, saying that “not a single thing [Ryan] said is accurate.” The Democrat went on to say that Romney’s reaction to the Libya attack was “a political statement which was panned by the media around the world,” and concluded with an apparent insult to the Republicans: “I mean, these guys bet against America all the time.”

The debate steadily degenerated, so that when they began talking about taxes and budgets, Biden, Ryan and Raddatz took turns interrupting each other, a transcript showing the long stretches where every other sentence was an interruption. Yet Biden was clearly the worst offender in this regard, as the Weekly Standard’s Fred Barnes saw it: “You don’t win a nationally televised debate by being rude and obnoxious. You don’t win by interrupting your opponent time after time after time or by being a blowhard.… Biden’s out of control conduct … will be long remembered — and not favorably.”

It is unlikely that Thursday’s debate will have any substantial impact on the general trend of the campaign. Romney and Ryan have had a week of surging momentum, while the Obama campaign has become increasingly testy about criticism of the administration’s failure in Libya, an irritability no doubt aggravated by polls indicating that the Republicans have pulled ahead in key swing states including Florida. Next Tuesday, Romney and Obama will debate again, this time a town-hall event in Hempstead, New York. Unless Obama can find some way to reverse Romney’s momentum in that meeting, there may soon be nothing left of the Democrat’s re-election hopes except, to borrow a phrase from Biden, “bluster” and “loose talk.”

I didn't watch the debate. My wife, a Romney supporter, called it a draw. She said that the debate didn't change many minds. She is a pretty fair observer and I have always respected her opinion. Ryan is a nice man perhaps too nice.

Moe Blotz| 10.12.12 @ 7:49AM

Translation: I did not watch the Ryan/Biden debate, but that will not stop me from providing the personal opinion of a family member who did. In my own mind, I am a sage of American politics because of my past associations and you all should value my opinion as much as you do those of the more knowledgeable writers you read on this Web site. Anecdotal evidence is very important to me and should sway political opinions of yours to my way of thinking. I am so disappointed that the best candidate in history did not get the Republican nomination that I will do my best to see that the current President keeps his job, even if it means not standing up for my pal Paul Ryan.

SUBVET| 10.12.12 @ 8:54AM

Jack........just what kind of a supporter are you ?

Athletic ???

But Biden's smile is sooooo beautiful. Every time he flashed that gorgeous smile I felt a thrill rush through me.

That Biden is a handsome man. He'll get my vote.

Joe! He's like Obama! He's just soooo dreamy!
I get all warm and runny just looking at him.

Well said Moe.

Alan Obama Fan Brooks | 10.12.12 @ 7:53PM

If Obama loses next week's debate, I wont vote for him; but after two Bushes, a Dole and a McCain, I wont vote GOP under any circumstances.
And btw I daresay Jack in Wi's wife has better judgment than any of you.

Alan Obama Fan Brooks | 10.12.12 @ 7:56PM

... I'd rather cut off my right arm than vote for Rockefel.. er, I mean Romney; I'd rather be the one armed man in Sam Shephard's imagination than vote for the opportunistic Romney.

Reagan believed in America;
Romney believes in Romney.

Tom Kyba| 10.13.12 @ 12:09PM

So are you for or against Romney? Perhaps a few more posts will clarify.

Alan Obama Fan Brooks | 10.13.12 @ 6:23PM

I'd much prefer Clinton to gain a third term!

C. Vernon Crisler | 10.12.12 @ 9:43AM

I didn't think either one landed a knock-out blow, but Biden certainly came across as angry, rude, and desparate to rescue Obama after the latter's abysmal debate performance.

I wish Ryan had cut this arrogant demogogue to pieces, but instead Ryan concentrated on defending Romney and attacking Obama, which is probably what the Romney team wanted him to do. Therefore, Biden was allowed to get away with his Progressive self-righteousness. Too bad. However, his demeanor probably did more to turn people away from him than anything Ryan could have done. So that in itself is a win for Ryan.

KyMouse| 10.12.12 @ 9:55AM

Pro-life people, including Ryan, should stop saying “I believe life begins at conception…”

It is not a matter of “belief” or religious faith.

It is a scientific fact.

On page one of The Developing Human: Clinically Oriented Embryology, a textbook written for medical students (not seminary students), we read that “Human development is a continuous process that begins when an ovum from a female is fertilized by a sperm from a male…

“A zogote is the beginning of a new human being…”

My office has other embryology books that say the same thing.

That isn’t religious faith. It’s science.

Celia| 10.12.12 @ 10:20AM

Martha Raddatz is my new hero. Every single talking head should be forced to watch the tape of this debate to see what a real moderator looks like. Her performance was an absolute tour de force. This most likely means we are in for a week of the AmSpec right wingers screaming MSM bias, but she simply spoke truth to power and did so in a way that required real debate about the issues.

If this is the playing field in which the Republicans are forced to play, then the election would end in an Obama landslide. Know hope.

Stuart Koehl| 10.12.12 @ 10:34AM

A moderator moderates, and does not interject his opinions into the discussion; neither does he interrupt or allow one of the speakers to constantly disrupt the proceedings. In that regard, Jim Lehrer was miles ahead of Martha Raddatz--who, by the way, stated that Biden was way over the top last night.

But thanks for your opinion.

Celia| 10.12.12 @ 10:56AM

And yours also . . .

Celia is just trolling and she got a bite. ;)

"Al, I suspect Celia may be Brooksie. Yesterday he stated that if Biden lost he wouldn't even vote the Dem ticket and change is AS name to Alan Third Party. My guess is he couldn't even do that right."

No, Celia is not me-- I think the election will be close. I will change my handle if Obama loses next week;
if he loses to Newt Romney on Tuesday it will be too embarrassing to vote for him.

Oldefarte| 10.12.12 @ 3:02PM

"facetious font"? Is that like Monica with pizza and cigars????????

Rhoetus| 10.15.12 @ 10:55PM

There once was an intern named Lewinsky

She played Hail to the Chief

That took the headlines away from Kaczynski

C. Vernon Crisler | 10.12.12 @ 10:59AM

Celia, you prefer a moderator who asks inane questions, and fails to warn one of the debaters to stop interrupting?

Tom Kyba| 10.12.12 @ 11:55AM

Please explain your comment in about a month or so. Obama in a landslide? Yoiks!

JmsA| 10.12.12 @ 12:12PM

Are you lost, Celia?

Roscoe| 10.12.12 @ 1:09PM

It's idiots such as this Celia, who have helped make worthless anymore, the description "hero", and "heroic".

Dai Alanye | 10.12.12 @ 1:12PM

Raddatz was a fine moderator... of Paul Ryan. Biden rode roughshod over her, and she hardly seemed to mind. Had Ryan been as discourteous as Biden, people would today be condemning Raddatz for failure to control the debate.
She ought to be thanking Ryan for saving her reputation.

Grzmlyk| 10.12.12 @ 1:28PM

I find it impossible to respect any opinion in which is included the utterly empty phrase, "spoke truth to power."

Funny how it's always libs who emply that odious chestnut.

I was unable to watch most of the debate last night, but if you think MSM bias doesn't exist, I'm guessing your primary sources of information are the NY Times, NPR and CBS, NBC or ABC; why, the only reason one of you drones would wander off the reservation onto a web site like this is because that's where you were directed to go to fill the trolling quota.

Suzyqpie| 10.12.12 @ 5:03PM

Grzmlyk, Let me be clear, you have probably observed this, all of the 0bama supporters traffic in cliches, banalities, and platitudes. Like their leader they do no heavy lifting, make no mistake.

Stan Redmond| 10.12.12 @ 1:39PM

Cutting off one side (changing the subject, interuption) and allowing the other side to ramble on aimlessly interupting the other side is not called moderating.

Anthony| 10.12.12 @ 1:53PM

Ooops Celia, you done let the cat out of the bag there girl. Raddatz's role was that of, repeat after me, MODERATOR, not to "speak truth to power".
That role, dear Celia, was for the candidates to do. I know it's easy to confuse lefty media types with lefty pols, as they are one in the same.
If allowing Biteme to act like the total ass that he always has been, then no wonder you are pleased. You got the red meat you so deserve.
But I do agree with you on one point, if you're into a journalistic porn tour de force, everybody should rewatch Ms. Raddatz's 90 minute lap dance with Joe Biteme.
Ole Joey loved it, cuz Joey boy was jesticulating, moaning, screaming and grin'n like a man who got the whole treatment from Ms. Raddatz, and indeed he did.
I bet his pants had to go to the cleaners today, and perhaps Martha's thong as well.

Oldefarte| 10.12.12 @ 2:44PM

Well DA, you obviously are too dense to understand that LUNATIC JOE was rude to her as well [and even more so]. Maybe you prefer Sharia Law as it pertains to women also, right? C. Vernon Crisler | 10.12.12 @ 10:56AM

Please excuse spelling errors...

Stan Redmond| 10.12.12 @ 1:35PM

After reading a lot of opinions of Ryan letting the moderator and Joe run right over him I'm beginning to think Ryan was smart enough to just let it happen. Paraphrasing "The Art of War," when your enemy is making a mistake let them. I think after the first blow up from Biden interupting Ryan I noticed Ryan back off his aggression a bit. Ryan realized Biden's buffoonish behaviour, and laughing out loud about hilarious situations like nuclear Iran, troops deaths, a bankrupt nation would damage Biden way more than any debate point.

William L. Gensert| 10.12.12 @ 10:10AM

During the last debate the President acted like a corpse. In this debate Biden played a zombie from 28 Days Later. I half expected him to lean over and take a bite out of Ryan's arm with those scarily white teeth.

Read more of my article: http://www.americanthinker.com.....z295seUHEu

KyMouse| 10.12.12 @ 12:08PM

I'm sure I'm not the only person who caught this:

Biden said that "nobody told us it wasn't a protest over the video" --

but also that "we'll know when Iran has a nuclear weapon."

If his first statement is true (it isn't), how likely is it that his second will be?

Otis, my man!| 10.12.12 @ 12:52PM

C. Vernon Crisler | 10.12.12 @ 1:11PM

vtwin| 10.12.12 @ 12:17PM

I think your wife is correct in her assessment “the debate didn't change many minds.” The euphoria on right after to first debate evolves into anger after the second betraying a fear on the right that Ryan did nothing last night to stop the inevitable reelection of Obama.

Anthony| 10.12.12 @ 12:38PM

Oh vtwin, we here at TAS are so sorry to see that you suffered a brain aneurysm along with Biteme last night.
But I digress, hey vtwin, my "rich" buddies and I are tickled pink to discover that the price of arugula is lower than the price of gasoline in California, and more plentiful.
But the good news is vtwin, with 2,000 people leaving California each week, those gas lines might begin to shrink a bit.
Stay in touch vtwin, and if you can't get gas, let us know, we'll send you 10 lbs of arugula to put in your "green" gas tank.
Ta ta, as we say in the land of 1%.

TLP| 10.12.12 @ 12:52PM

And why can criminal thugs and millionaire rappers say nigger and I can't?
"As honorary chairman of the welcoming committee, it's my privilege to present a laurel and hearty handshake to our new.....nigger. "

Joe didn't help Obama's reelection. Sure he cheered up his base a little bit but the rest of the world saw a rude unfunny clown.

RCV| 10.12.12 @ 3:04PM

Not what the polls of undecided voters shows. Though Joe sure did fire up the base.

Drunken Sailor| 10.12.12 @ 4:00PM

Sorry RCV but even the left leaning CNN says Ryan got the better of the debate among independents.

DRed| 10.12.12 @ 4:11PM

No, they polled likely voters. Their poll actually had more Republicans in it then Democrats.

"SPECIAL NOTE OF CAUTION #2: The sample of debate-watchers in this poll were 31% Democratic and 33% Republican. That indicates that the sample of debate watchers is about eight points more Republican than an average CNN poll of all Americans, so the respondents were more Republican than the general public."

Drunken Sailor| 10.12.12 @ 4:46PM

Really. If Biden won then why are all the news media outlets talking about how rude and over the top Biden was? Guess we will know in a few days

DRed| 10.12.12 @ 5:05PM

Because the lamestream media cares more about style over substance. You'd think it would be more relevant that Biden refused to sit there and let that simpering little punk lie to his face, but I guess what's really important is that he laughed too much. That's our media for you.

Joe has clearly demonstrated that our hatred for God, Romney and America isn’t really enough to win and it’s high time that as progressives we really need to really push aside and ridicule all those intolerant sheeple and retain our rightful place as rulers. Ryan, no doubt will allow his ideals and religious morals dictate his policies, whereas Joe has neither ideals, morals nor policy which will help us destroy the very system that is tainted with the stench of capitalist greed. Hopefully by this example progressive pundits will be diligently reminding the uneducated trogs how inferior they are. Forward!

Biden was so rude it was sickening. The moderator was inept, letting Biden interrupt time after time after time. It was the farthest thing from a true debate. What a tragedy our election process has been turned into a reality show.

Joellen| 10.12.12 @ 7:16AM

Biden followed his master orders well (go out there and try to destroy your oponent.) The UN-BIAS (I am being sarcastic for those who dont know me) moderator (who by the way had Obama as a guest at her wedding - nothing to get worked up about there) also followed her masters orders; which was as Ryan is about to make his point - interrupt and switch topics, especially if his point is besting Joe the baffoon. Really, it was so ugly what we witnessed last night, I must reiterate, we have truly seen the lowest of the low with this group. RUSH........called it yesterday about the (clown helper) thanks pete.

It's hard to make a point when you pull the 2 against 1 drill. I remember these CS tactics in the school yard. Always in the lunch area where everyone can see.

They beat you down infront of your classmates 2 against 1......

At 3:30 pm on the way home you stand on the corner and wait for this CS.......I know the bible says vengence is the Lord's but somtimes a man's got to do what a man's got to do.

It's called Character................and they don't have any.

Folks.........we have to make a stand in November we can't let this clown / jigaboo rule our country.

Yes I said it......!!!! and I don't care. (hat tip Mark L.)

Agreed Stephine. Our pal Ben Stein actually, almost, made one good observation, he opined that Raddatz was so in the tank for Bitme that he should have been sitting in her lap.
Ben almost got it right; actually, Raddatz was so in the tank for Biteme that she managed to give Biteme a 90 minute lap dance while conducting the debate.
This would explain Biteme's wild jesticulations, wide grin, and over the top excited utterences.
Good thing Joey boy was wearing a dark suit when he stood up at the end of the debate.

Biden was terrific. He wouldn't let that little boy get away with his vapid platitudes and refusals to answer questions. The picture of Ryan in his backwards cap doing curls said it all - the kid is utterly unfit to be anywhere near the Oval Office.

Stan Redmond| 10.12.12 @ 1:51PM

Amazing standards Obama supporters embrace. Obama, an Anti-American, anti-white racist agitator, terrorist sympathiser, communist disciple, arrogant childish jerk choom-gangster, who has no idea what he's doing is absolutely qualified to be president. BUT, a nerdy policy wonk who knows policy, budgets, and legislation inside and out, with a squeaky clean all American family life can't be VP.

DRed| 10.12.12 @ 2:05PM

If he knows budgets inside and out, how come he can't explain how his own works? That stammering little weiner couldn't come close to explaining his own plan. That wimp got steamrolled.

Gee, Stan, you say "anti-American, anti-white racist agitator, terrorist sympathizer, communist disciple, arrogant, childish jerk choom gangster who has no idea what he's doing" like it's a bad thing.

That's what liberals LOVE about Obama.

RCV| 10.12.12 @ 3:02PM

Right - a "terrorist sympathizer" who takes them out relentlessly with drones, wherever they hide. Unlike the guys who couldn't shoot straight who preceded him.

Back to the plagiarizing, Joe Plugs.

Grzmlyk| 10.12.12 @ 3:45PM

Funny how, when the US military killed jihadis under the Bush administration, it was just a cruel, heartless "war for oil." When Obama sends drones in there (for political cover exclusively, not because he believes terrorists are terrorists), it's suddenly evidence that this putatuve "citizen of the world" is tough on terrorism. The bad guys are "noble savages" a la Rousseau when the GOP is in office; they're faceless abstractions when your feckless bendover buddies are running the show.

You aren't fooling anyone with your double standards. You guys all believe we have it coming to us; it's merely social justice on an international scale. We deserve to die because of our heartless and exploitive "addiction to oil." Well, YOU don't deserve to die, of course, because you're a big-hearted, compassionate, citizen-of-the-world liberal, and YOU only use oil reluctantly, which makes your consumption virtuous, right?

And, by the way, keep telling yourself the Arab Spring is a positive development that's going to earn America hugs from Muslims. How's that working out, exactly? Please remind me of how things are going in Libya. Or Egypt. Or Syria. Or Turkey. Or Iran. And, while you're at it, please remind me of the death toll of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan under the Obama doctrine (such as it is).

Hey, don't mind me - I'm just dissenting - and wasn't it you guys who said that dissent is the highest form of patriotism?

Oh wait - that was under Bush. Never mind.

Wait - let me get this straight - an Obama fanboy who idolizes Barry Soetoro's utterly puerile personality, his callow and inchoate mind and his utterly adolescent understanding of the world, economics, history, the Constitution and Marxism is trying to gain traction by calling Ryan a kid?

What is this, some sort of fifth-rate, half-assed attempt at rhetorical jujitsu?

Surely you haven't consciously devolved into such abject self-parody.

I take that back; the more devout the liberal fundamentalist, the more removed from reality you are. And, to buy into Obamunism, you must, ipso facto, share Obama's juvenile perspective.

No real adult could ever view Obama as anything but an overmatched, stunted, immature dwarf on the world stage.

Then again, liberalism is really just a political form of the Peter Pan syndrome - you really think Neverland exists, if only you wish hard enough.
This is the logic you get from people who think Utopia can be attained if you just put a gun to enough people's heads.

Again, there are four, and only four, kinds of liberals: Fools, pawns, crooks and vandals.

I'll be generous and assume you're just a garden-variety fool.

Biden's performance in many ways was similar to internet trolls. The debate format (and the efforts of the moderator) prevented this. Biden reminded me of internet trolls who type in all caps. He flung accusations (cutting taxes NEVER, EVER lead to increase tax revenues and growth), interrupted, snorted, and at times he near screamed. Towards the end, he spoke in creepy, hushed whispers. His performance was wierd if not a little insance.

The moderator saved all of her clairifying questions for Ryan. She also made sure that nearly a third of the debate was focused on Afghanistan (when it should have been focused on the poor performance of the economy). But, to his credit, she did remind the crazy Veep that our generals are commanded by civilians (Biden looked confused on that one). Ryan, on the other hand allowed Biden to get away with a number of zingers (WE LEAVING AFGHANISTAN IN 2014. PERIOD!!!!); he also failed (like Mitt) to remind voters that the Bush Recession ended in June of 2009. He also failed to remind voters that both Biden and Obama were part of the Democrat Majority from 2007-2009 (when the Recession hit). Otherwise, Ryan just let Joe bloviate. Focus Group polling was not in the least positive for Biden (56% thought he was way over the top). It is ironic that Biden could have gotten some really good points across. But, his over-the-top, crazy delivery ruined it.

Albert Constantine Jr.| 10.12.12 @ 7:41AM

C. Vernon Crisler | 10.12.12 @ 11:05AM

I think the only real point scored by Biden during the whole debate was calling Ryan out on a couple of constituent letters in which Ryan claimed that government spending could create prosperity. Ryan tried to brush it off as just boilerplate that all Congressman do for constituents. However, it does show that even smart Republicans like Ryan don't understand that government spending doesn't create any net prosperity. It just creates prosperity for some by taking it away from others -- the essence of Keynesianism.

Stan Redmond| 10.12.12 @ 2:02PM

All legislators exist to take money from one group of people to give to another group. That's government. However the point that came across to me was the usual "Well you do it to" argument the democrats love to use. Bush ran up a big deficit so Obama is REALLY gonna ramp up the deficit because Bush did it. Ryan got 20 million for a non profit energy improvement company. But we're REALLY gonna give 100s of billions to Solyndras, GMs, failed banks, Fiskars, and crony green companies that donated money to Obama because Ryan did it.

C. Vernon Crisler | 10.12.12 @ 3:08PM

That may be true that many governments exist to take money away from one group to give to another, but only Democrats (and alas a few too many Republicans) believe such wealth redistribution actually creates any net prosperity.

PJ| 10.12.12 @ 7:42AM

After watching this debate & the last one I have to make a couple of conclusions. The Democrats do not know how to debate. They think bullying will score points. They think ad-libbing will get one through a debate & win. Moderators who do not know how to moderate easily show their true colors & a free for all ensues.

Debating is generally a civil exchange of ideas in a defined format with enforced rules. It does not have to be boring yet it should not be a 3 Stooges parody as was shown by the Democrats & moderators in the last 2 debates.

An example of a great debate was between Christopher Hitchens & Dinesh D'Souza discussing religion & the existence of God. It was a very civilized & disciplined exchange of verbal punches all w/in a setting of rules where both sides were able to express his opinions fully.

Didn't get that last night.

Anthony| 10.12.12 @ 9:40AM

I couldn’t turn off my TV fast enough. As soon as the word came that the debate was over, even before they probably shook hands, off was that damned spot!

It’s only been 4 years since Palin and Biden debated. I tried to remember anything from it but couldn’t. Am I getting forgetful?

Hell no!

I obviously didn’t watch it, because I can’t stand Biden.

Gosh, was it hell to sit through 90 minutes of the devil, Biden! What an infuriating character!

Apparently, ol Joe got into many fights when he was young. Maybe he sustained brain damage.

Essentially, he channeled Chris “tingle” Matthews. And, that means he was over the top with disrespect, not just for the poor boob who had to “debate” him, but for the whole debate format.

Yes, Biden and his gang are founding members of the SHUT UP, HE SAID club. With nothing positive to say, they are reduced to blustering. Make noise, drown out reason!

Lastly, Biden threw around so many numbers, millions, billions, thousands, and so on, it was as if he were giving us the finger. That is, it was just another way to yell, to fill the time so Ryan couldn’t calmly make his points.

Joe Biden is VP---what a country.

Albert Constantine Jr.| 10.12.12 @ 9:15AM

Among Biden's flaws in the 2008 debates was when he invoked Article I of the Constitution as to where the powers of the Vice-Presidency are embodied, (Article II defines the executive powers, only the role of VP as President of the Senate can be found in Article I, which defines legislative powers of Congress), and his citing meeting people at "Katie's Restaurant in Wilmington" (the restaurant, which was once owned by my godmother, had been closed since the 11980s).

Unfortunately, recognizing his misstatements there required a greater knowledge of the Constitution or Delaware small business/ restaurant trivia than the average journalist. More fortunately, the Obama administration and its record of poor performance is much better known now, and its poor substance and Biden's bad behavior stood out this time.

TLP| 10.12.12 @ 9:28AM

I need you to go to Berkley.

Simon Templar| 10.12.12 @ 8:34AM

Once again, it seems that all of our talking heads and conservative pundits have missed the essential and most critical issue in last night's farce.

Let me pose it in a question.

Just how much absolute insult, bullshit, manipulation do conservatives or The GOP, for that matter, put up with from Liberal democrats and their Pravda media before they take action and start acting in their own interest?
Do you draw a line anywhere?
Or is there an unwritten law or rule I missed when becoming a conservative that says conservatives must tolerate anything and everything like good ole chumps and impotent idiots?

Odd, not a single thought about redefining the next debate and setting new ground rules and consequences...

PJ| 10.12.12 @ 9:15AM

I'll answer your question because I have yet to see McCain respond to a posted question.

It is to the incumbent's advantage not to debate (esp if he did not accomplish anything well), thus he has the upper hand in designing the debate format to his advantage. I thought I read somewhere that these moderators were picked by the Democrats.

Romney knows that MSM is not giving him & his ideas a fair amount of accurate exposure. The televised "debating" format is the only way his message can get out accurately to millions of people at one time. I bet Romney had to make major concessions for this to happen.

Dick Morris was right. The long Republican primary season honed Romney's debating skills which resulted in him exceptionally pulling it off last week. Paul Ryan did OK, not great, again given the extraordinary hostile environment. He could have been a bit more assertive.

For the American people, bullies & most decidedly bullies with no ideas don't win. Obama & ilk are going down big time in November!

Simon Templar| 10.12.12 @ 9:36AM

Thank you, PJ.
PJ, with all due respect, you are overlooking some critical realities. First, it is true that the MSM will attempt to bias and manipulate. At the same time, it is also in their interest and bottom line to air these so-called debates. They only hold some of the cards, not all of them. Romney does not have to make major concessions nor does he have to agree to all their demands. In fact, he can play the inherent competition among these dying networks and poor rating to get the best bargain.
Second, they are not the only format to communicate, as we have seen with the growing alternative media and other new and developing communication technologies. The point is we need not concede, we need to think outside the box, and get around their dying monopolies.
The incumbent has pressure to debate especially when he is seen as weak and has a bad record. To refuse would show greater weakness and vulnerability. These debates and their formats and details are negotiated. It seems that the RNC is incapable in acting in their own interest and getting anything.

I sincerely hope the American public will indeed see with open eyes and reject this buffoonery and UN-American media corruption..

Al Adab| 10.12.12 @ 2:05PM

Biden clearly laid out for everyone to see just what the Left thinks of the American people and Conservatives in particular. Remember the clinging to God, guns, etc.? The Left disparages Conservatives, and even republicans, for having a belief in Liberty, free markets and individual achievement. To them the collective and socio-economic blocs are everything. It is the base of their power. We are considered ignorant, unenlightened and crass for acting otherwise. These are their true colors.

BTW, Bidens earlier demagogic comment about "putting y'all back in chains" is perhaps the most despicable comment by any American Vice President since, and perhaps exceeding, John C. Calhoun.

Biden didn't care how he came across as long as his "style" was good enough for the still-undecided voters.

The fact that they are still undecided at this point tells us what Romeny is up against.

The polls may be fraudulent to some extent but they still show tendencies. One tendency is that it seems that undecided voters are itching to give Obam-Biden a chance with the most minimal of "good" news, even if it is false, or "good" performances.

Romney needs need an A++ debate to make headway and Obam or Biden only need a D- debate to do the same. It's terrible that for 2 decades now the presidential elections are always in the hands of capricious undecided voters.

All economic and foreign disasters aside, Romney is ahead only because he did an A++ debate while Obam got a failing grade.

What I think will continue to help Romney is that Obam's anger and arrogance and ignorance are more visible without his teleprompter; Biden can fake it better. Despite the CNN poll with a 4 point win for Ryan, nationally, it wouldn't suprise me at all if undecideds thought Biden won the debate. Good thing Romney is debating Obam and not Biden.

DRed| 10.12.12 @ 10:21AM

DRed| 10.12.12 @ 11:22AM

Did you watch the debate? Biden defended Obama. Biden, for whatever reason, refers to him as 'The President' instead of 'Obama'.

BackToBasics| 10.12.12 @ 11:43AM

I watched it. Why didn't he use the term President Obama often enough if he is so proud of the administration's record? There was an avoidance of it which is not a sign of confidence or strength of position. Biden's only real defense was VP Bluster because inside he knows he has little to defend without revealing to the public the radically socialist hand he has. All he has remaining is bluster.

You know it's true and you applaud it yourself, so why don't you come clean about it?

DRed| 10.12.12 @ 11:50AM

Look, here's the boy wonder explaining how the Romney budget would work:

RADDATZ: Do you know exactly what you’re doing?
RYAN: Look — look at what Mitt Romney — look at what Ronald Reagan and Tip O’Neill did. They worked together out of a framework to lower tax rates and broaden the base, and they worked together to fix that.
What we’re saying is, here’s our framework. Lower tax rates 20 percent. We raised about $1.2 trillion through income taxes. We forego about $1.1 trillion in loopholes and deductions. And so what we’re saying is, deny those loopholes and deductions to higher-income taxpayers so that more of their income is taxed, which has a broader base of taxation…

Let's cut through the malarkey and sum up his answer in one word. That word is "no". He can't tell you what loopholes and deductions he's going to forgo because he doesn't know. Congress runs on loopholes and deductions. It's how Congresspeople get money to get reelected. Paul Ryan has spent his entire adult life in Congress-he knows damn well his plan is a nonsensical fairy tale. His plan is going to result in either higher taxes for poor people and the middle class or more debt.

PolishKnight| 10.12.12 @ 12:09PM

When Ryan says "Good morning", that's interpreted by the left to mean that he's secretly planning to tax the poor people and middle class. In other words, much like with the global warming debate, any evidence is proof of what they believe. Warm weather, global warming! Cold weather? Climate change! Normal weather? Suspicious!

In the meantime, Ryan made an excellent point which is that even if the wealthy had all their property confiscated, it wouldn't balance Obama's budget. He should have gone further and observed that EVERY Democrat president has wound up increasing taxes on the middle class. Every one including Obama.

DRed| 10.12.12 @ 12:20PM

I've read a number of analyses of the Romney plan. The numbers simply don't work. And that's even if you give Romney the benefit of the doubt.

Ryan's point is that you can't balance the budget by raising taxes on the rich so you should cut taxes on the rich, which will totally not raise taxes on the middle class. That makes no sense. Sure, you wouldn't have to raise taxes if you massively slashed federal spending, but Romney's plan doesn't do that. So where is he going to get the money? If it's not coming from the rich, and it's not going to be borrowed (remember, Romey and Ryan don't drastically cut federal spending), where is it going to come from?

TLP| 10.12.12 @ 1:33PM

He's going to Get The Money from a Million more people Working, and Paying Income Taxes.

Building the XL Pipeline.

Re-opening all of the Coal Mines, and Coal Fired Electrical Generating Plants that vtwin's "Nigga" has shut down.

Eliminating the Thousands of Job Killing Regulations.

Putting the EPA on a Tight Leash.

Getting Rid of Soviet Style Obamacare.

And, that's just Day 1.

Oldefarte| 10.12.12 @ 10:02PM

DA, its Economics or Governmental Financiang 101, but since you're a dummie, it's rocket science to you. Government spending WILL BE SEVERLY CUT by eliminating departments/agencies/employees, merging others. Additionally governmental regulations will be eliminated unless an economic and management benefit can be derived. The decreasing of governmental spending will free up loan-borrowings to be provided to private industries who will begin to hire new employees, which will in turn provide salaries/benefits etc, which will provide for increased consumer spending, which will benefit the economy as a whole. Romney's government will immediately allow the construction of the Keystone Pipeline and oil drilling in all three of our oceans etc which will provide millions of needed jobs. Thereafter a percentage tax cut will be granted which will further spur private businesses to increase their plant/equipment/employee purchases. All these extra employments etc will increase tax revenues coming into the government coffers. The decrease in governmental spending plus the increase in governmental revenues from all of this will decrease the defecit/debt over time. Got it now idiot?????????????????????????

BackToBasics| 10.12.12 @ 11:12PM

DRed, he either doesn't know yet what they want to cut or they cannot say because the press will find avergae citizen Joe or Jane to cry on camera about how mean Romney is. Any cut, and many spending cuts are needed, will be painful to some group(s). Since a great percentage of the of the the media is on Obam's side, it is wise to give general directions that the Romney administration wants to go without giving specifics when real specifics are yet to be hamered out in the legislative and committee processes. A rational person realizes this and I think you know it too.

Even without specifics, they are being truthful about wanting to cut spending even though admitting this costs them many votes. They gain some too, but they probably lose more than they gain. A wise man is circumspect in such situations when the media and the incumbancy are against him. Only a fool speaks all of his mind.

Many liberals who say these things about Romney and Ryan were not concerned at all about the secret committee meetings held to cobble together Obamacare. Even Pelosi admitted we wouldn't know what was in it until it was passed. Where was the outrage then from the left?

A VP is expected to represent his administration, and Biden certainly did that at Thursday night's debate. Biden's behavior was the hallmark of the Obama administration--DISRESPECT. Biden showed the same open contempt and disdain for his opponent that the current administration shows to the military (funding cuts, oppressive ROE in Afghanistan, form letters to parents of deceased) the elderly (2010 budget that included a 9% INCREASE in foreign aid and NO cost of living increase in Soc. Sec. for 2010 OR 2011, 716 Billion taken from Medicare to help fund Obamacare) women (the REAL war on women is taking place in the Middle East under Sharia law while this administration sits silent) our allies (snubbing of Bibi, secret envoys and off-mic remarks) and the American people (Obamacare push-through, Fast & Furious cover-up, Benghazi cover-up).

No one will remember all the remarks made during the debate, but we will ALL remember Biden's grimaces, smirks, laughter, constant interruptions and wonder to ourselves 'Is THIS what he does when he's in a room of dignitaries and someone voices a different opinion? Is THIS how he conducts himself in the presence of our allies during meetings where controversial topics are discussed? NO WONDER our diplomatic relations are doing poorly and our international status is continuing to decline!

PolishKnight| 10.12.12 @ 9:59AM

I was listening to the radio on the way in this morning and the host asked the question: "Why do you think Republicans think Ryan did well and Democrats think Biden did well?"

I think their styles, and dialogue, were representative of both parties for the past 50 years. Democratic politicians and "journalists" have long been disrespectful of their opponents and while they have some good points, they really are just about winning at all costs. They preach about tolerance, diversity, etc. and say nice things when starting the debate in order to create a semblance of niceness but they have the simple opinion that it's their way or the highway. This is how they wanted Obama to behave last week when Romney got "uppity".

Ryan wasn't a wimp or "nice guy" that let Biden get pushed around, but he wasn't as aggressive as I would have liked him to be but perhaps that's why I'm not a politician. I would have pulled some jokes back at Biden such as made fun of him while he was talking in a similar style while he talked (to illustrate how he was behaving) AND I would have "doubled down" on the "47%" issue that Biden was pushing and observed that Romney is obsessed with creating jobs because that's what produces checks for people to cash. Ryan represents the rational, honest conservative position and conservatives watching feel in tune with him.

Now the American people have a choice which I think is a good thing.

KyMouse| 10.12.12 @ 10:25AM

Obama and Biden....here's who they have reminded me of for the past four years:

Obama is the sullen Chicago thug who quietly focuses on sticking the stiletto between the victim's ribs or shoulderblades.

Biden is the ratty little guy peering around his arm, cackling, "Hee heeee! Stick 'im again! Stick 'im again!"

And we, of course, are the victim.

John II| 10.12.12 @ 10:32AM

I watched the debate last night mostly in open-mouthed astonishment. The word out just now is that Biden's principal interest was to reinvigorate the Democratic "base," which I presume means the crazed 25 or so percent of the electorate motivated by hatred of America and contempt for civil discourse.

Biden's personal behavior was so over-the-top bad that he could not possibly hold any appeal to the only segment of the electorate that now matters for a November win: the independents and "undecideds."

This is getting really weird. It's almost as if the Obamanistas are TRYING to lose the election--perhaps because they are fishing for what they take to be a colossal political advantage in having the Republicans in power during the period when the grave consequences of the Obama presidency fully kick in.

And by the way, Timmy: if you're going to keep prepping us with that reference to Berkeley, spell it right.

PolishKnight| 10.12.12 @ 10:54AM

I disagree John. I think Obama and Biden really do want to win. Their political formula is about winning elections at all costs via the FDR method (destroy the middle class then buy their votes via handouts) and the Stalin method (get rid of the opposition by starving them to death and reward loyalists with jobs and food. Ethnic cleanse to wrap up.) In addition, they are creatures of ego. They like to win and be important. Losing for them is like death.

In both debates, they simply were what they are. Obama was a complacent, affirmative action president who thought just showing up should give him the win. Biden was a smug jerk with a friendly moderator who thought America would cheer him on as a bully. This is how they think and act.

Paul McGrath| 10.12.12 @ 11:31AM

There was an excellent point made in the National Review a few years ago. The writer said that there are some people who want to be president because they truly have a desire to make a positive change, and that there are some people who want to be president because it's like grabbing the brass ring. Obama got the brass ring--the golf, the parties, the celebrities, the travel, the money--but the job itself has now, arguably, become a burden to him, especially with the dream of the nice mansion he now owns in Hawaii.

I think he wants out.

CNN's editorialists had the following gems:

1. Calling Ryan's plan "malarkey" was a home run for Biden.

Really? That's how you hit a home run? With a simple pejorative? Here I thought substance, or even accuracy, were important.

2. Democrats are people who are afraid to take their own side in a fight.

Are you kidding me? That might be a good definition of conservatives. Democrats are better defined as "hypocrites" or "hate incarnate" or "people who insist that you believe things that you know aren't true".

3. Biden won in a landslide.

Ok, so this was John Avlon, who sees the whole world through his own peculiar lenses. But he sure is confident in himself.

PolishKnight| 10.12.12 @ 11:13AM

Keep in mind that after Obama's clear loss, most leftists were in denial. They attempted to say Obama had won or called it a "draw". Then after it was declared that Romney did "well", they said he was a "bully" and a "liar".

Now fast forward to last night: Biden tried to bully Ryan (along with the moderator) but most leftists think that's ok. It's DIFFERENT when it happens to THEM, get it? Same thing with "lying". Or any other standard for that matter. As believers in The Truth, they don't have to live up to standards for mere mortals.

So to them, the fact that Biden "showed up" and wasn't an empty chair was a "victory" because it was an improvement (albeit not by much.)

Tick tock. Time keeps on slippin’ into the future---apparently.

It’s a good thing time is absolutely illusory, or we should be worried about what’s coming.

In India, there is a tradition stretching back three thousand years, for those who’ve had enough of human suffering to seek someone who’s overcome it all. Yes, gurus have always been among us. Why, even the basketball guru, Bill Walton! I still have a VCR tape of his.

What happens to the seeker?

Demands are made on him. Anyone who chooses to follow a guru, if truly wise, does their best to closely fulfill his specific 24/7 conditions. If you want to learn how to shoot a basketball, mimic the form and process from a proven master.

When it comes to spiritual life, though, a True Guru’s conditions are not for their own sake. What IS a guru? The word means, light bringer.

Let there be mirrors!

Take the demand to change diet from the standard American one to a lacto-vegetarian one. Besides bringing better health, the true gift from the guru is the HEAT one “suffers”---oh, how I’d love a Twinkie!

It’s the “hot house” of self awareness that “cooks” ones reality, so that consciousness becomes possible.

Who Knows?| 10.12.12 @ 11:08AM

Consider Obama-Biden as gurus.

They, and their “priests”, Pelosi-Reid et al, have certainly provided conditions for the body politic-economic of America---and HEAT is rising!

Indeed, the pot is getting so hot, that despite all the attempts by rigid fools to keep the lid on, the temperature just keeps on rising---there’s a LOT of fuel burning under it.

Now, it’s good to keep in mind that Reality is always and already “on fire”. Politicians need fire in the belly. We all want to keep warm in winter and cool in summer. Our metabolism--- a word that stands for the burning of food to keep us above room temperature, or on fire---must be within close bounds of: temperature.

So, it seems to me that our political-economic conditions are about to blast away---a furnace of exploding HEAT!

This will be very clarifying. And THAT is what we require, awareness of the Truth. Which, sadly for many, won’t be pretty.

And people thing sacrificial fires are so obsolete.

Yes---the fever that IS humanity is approaching the make or break point.

Enjoy it---ALL.

PS---I wonder if I’ll have to buy more toilet paper this month.

JP| 10.12.12 @ 3:18PM

I think many people are missing something important. Biden's Angry, Deranged White Man schtick (which is really, really dated) was geared to rally the base. The Progressive Base (think Stewart, Mattews, Koz, etc...) loves this agressive in-your-face macho stuff. Without a ramped up base, Obama doesn't stand a chance. And Senate Dems are beginning to worry if the Obama/Biden ticket will drag them all down. The polling numbers are beginning to worry even MSNBC (see Real Clear Politics. They just put 4 more states in play that were formerly leaning to the Dems).

Which brings us to the simple fact that if Obama and Axelrod are worrying about their BASE in Mid October, as well as downstream Senate candidates, then things are lookng grim. And the only way to at least slow the bleed is to unleash the Unhinged Joe Biden.

He didn't disappoint.

But that's just me. I don't suffer fools gladly.

Oh, yeah, the current meme of the party in power is that the other party is "whining about the debate." Should be easy for them to recognize, they've been whining about the Bush "legacy of meltdown" for three and a half years.

Ralph Novy| 10.13.12 @ 11:36PM

When somebody like Biden interjects some corrections in the midst of the recitation of a series of long-ago debunked lies, he's "interrupting."

When somebody like Hannity won't let anyone who vaguely disagrees with him about anything get a word in edgewise, it's "interviewing" or "dialoging."

Yeah, Biden was aggressive. And Ryan was passive. Duh. But you didn't have any problems when the MSM used basically those same characterizations of Romney and Obama, respectively ... did you?

Your lack of self-reflection is stunning.

spike59| 10.15.12 @ 5:51AM

when somebody like Biden smirks, jabbers like a clueless chimp, LIES repeatedly, refuses to show his opponent the common courtesy (over 80 times) of allowing him to finish an answer before babbling, it's NOT 'interjecting some corrections'...it's undignified, juvenile, and flat-out RUDE.

VP debates AREN'T the same as and interview on Hannity; it's Hannity's show, and HE controls what goes on

Romney never giggled, guffawed, rolled his eyes, smirked, or insulted his opponent-THAT'S what is called 'Presidential behavior and dignity'...what Biden did was more suited for a 3rd grade playground argument
