WASHINGTON — Well, apparently I am not crazy after all. The
polls have caught up with me, and they — après le débat
— are coming around to my point of view. Governor Mitt Romney is
ahead in the race for the White House, and let me add he will
probably be residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in 2013.
I have been saying it for weeks, recognizing that the polls are
weighted too heavily toward the Democratic candidate, employ too
small a sampling — as little as nine percent of the electorate —
and do not take into account the most important issue, that being
the economy. Still, before the debate the polls were heavily
against me, and my colleagues were beginning to question my
judgment. No, make that my sanity. Now they are again reassured. I
am allowed to work alone in my ninth-floor office with the window
open. The polls show Romney pulling ahead even in battleground
states after he demonstrated in debate last week that we need
something more than a ceremonial president in the White House. It
is a dangerous world that we live in.
President Barack Obama looked great at most official functions.
But beginning with Ron Suskind’s fine book, Confidence
Men, and continuing on to Bob Woodward’s recent
The Price of Politics, it has been increasingly apparent
that this president does not sit through meetings — even national
security briefings! — does not know how to make or implement
policy, and much prefers to gabble on and on, preferably with the
assistance of a Teleprompter. And to think the official party line
on Obama has been that he is eloquent. I think the wind
came out of that legend when in debate the other night Romney said,
“Look, I’ve been in business for 25 years. I have no idea what
you’re talking about.” All true blue Obama fans — and even I —
expected the President to come back with any one of a half-dozen
witty zingers. How about a rude reference to Bain Capital? Yet
Obama looked glassy-eyed and the ref, Jim Lehrer, stepped in.
Moreover, Obama continued to be wobbly and evasive in response to
Romney’s challenges. Some Obama fans blamed the ref, though if not
for him Obama could have suffered bodily injury.
After nearly four years in the White House our ceremonial
President is presiding over the weakest recovery of modern times.
He presides over low growth, high unemployment, and trillion dollar
deficits every year of his presidency. All he is offering the
electorate in the next four years is more of the same. Jimmy Carter
could not get reelected with such a shaky strategy, and neither
will Obama. Furthermore, last month his foreign policy went
poof right in front of him. His nonsense about leading
from behind, deferring to international organizations, and paying
obeisance to Arab militants has been seen for what it is, a warrant
for invading our diplomatic installations in foreign lands. In
Libya the animals slaughtered our ambassador, and the evidence is
clear, to wit, the ambassador was seeking more security at the time
of his death and being rebuffed. Remember Benghazi!
The debate last week was a classic. Romney put together the
finest showing of any presidential candidate in the history of
televised debates. He did it in speaking of his record and in
speaking of Obama’s record. Yet he did something more. James Rosen
of Fox News noticed it and remarked lapidarily: Romney “delivered
one of the great defenses of the free market ever given to an
audience of this size. Obama seemed intimidated and adrift with the
material. His constructions were lengthy and complex, whereas
Romney’s were clear and commanding and fluid. Even if Romney loses
on November 6, this still goes down as an epic electronic-age
primer on various models of economics that Ronald Reagan couldn’t
even deliver; and Milton Friedman never addressed an audience of
this size. At all points, Romney returned to the theme of
competition as a driver of reduced costs and improved quality.” And
Rosen concluded: “Romney also delivered the sharpest elbow of the
night, with the reference to Obama’s campaign contributors: the
closest thing to the pressing of a charge of corruption.”
Now let me make a prediction. Romney will not lose on November
6. Obama will continue to perform wretchedly in debate. He is not
going to do better. What you saw last week was the essential Barack
Obama, community organizer, part-time senator.

The idea of Romney winning is premised on the understanding that the American people are willing to listen to logic and apply thought and reason. But Obama's staunchest supporters show none of these characteristics (logic, thought, reason). It's all emotional to them, and they swoon as they pull the lever. Add to this the reality of vote fraud already proven to exist (see Al Franken), and the outcome is more murky.
Aristocat| 10.11.12 @ 6:54AM

I think your wrong on the stupid part. It is not that he is stupid as much as his arrogance knows no bounds.
Too many pictures have been taken of him over the 30 years he's worn it to dismiss the ring as fact.
No one is arguing that he wears the ring or about what it says. They are simply doing what they always do, which is to tell you it does not mean what you think it does.
IE: Muslims don't wear gold. Allah means God so he is really just stating his faith in the one true God while they remind you that Obama is a Christian and to suggest otherwise is just crazy talk. Don't worry though, the main stream media will never allow it to become "news."
Muslim father's, muslim schools, muslim friends and a pastor of 20 years who cannot say for certain Obama abandoned his muslim faith and friends for Christianity. Let me ask you, did Bush ever close a speech with "may God's peace be upon you." ?
I don't believe Obama believes in any God, but if he did believe in God it is Allah not Yahweh.

Sorry, Aristocrat, would that it would be so.
But it won't; Romney will, at best, attempt to kick the can further down the proverbial road; he will embrace further "quantitative easing," and leave in place a shocking number of onerous regulations.
He is a statist; he believes in the American welfare state, and I don't like what I hear about using the Laffer curve argument to make the case that lowering tax rates increases revenues.
It may do so, but our problem in this country is not lack of revenue. It is too much spending. Government is far, far too big and metastasizing at an alarming rate.
His desire to "repeal and replace" Obamacare scares me - replace it with what? We don't need a better government program, we need to get government out of health care virtually altogether. That would return us to a free market and realistic prices for healthcare.
That will not happen. Romney intends to be a better guardian of the juggernaut that is strangling not only our economy, but the American character.
I like Romney; I've thought all along that he had a good chance of winning, and I think he's a competent manager, a good person and as honest a politician as you're gonna get.
But he is no conservative, and the damage done to America can only be reversed with measures that 90% of Americans will find unpalatable.
If he does muster that kind of courage, the riots in Greece will be small potatoes to what's going to happen here.
DRed| 10.11.12 @ 4:41PM
Romney's going to replace Obamacare with a plan that keeps all the popular bits and gets rid of all the nasty parts that are supposed to pay for the popular bits. Spend and don't tax is the Republican way, Grizzy. We both know it.
Romney's undoubtedly a very smart guy, but I have no idea how you can think he's honest. Even for a politician he's wildly dishonest. On almost any major policy question he's contradicted himself at least 3 times in the last year alone. He's going to cut taxes for the rich. No, he's going to cut taxes for everyone. No, he's actually not going to cut taxes for the rich. Actually, he's just going to cut tax rates, but remove enough deductions so the amount of taxes paid stays the same, but he's going to stimulate economic growth by cutting taxes. Which deductions? oh, he can't tell you. He's full of mitt.
Drunken Sailor| 10.11.12 @ 4:54PM
A obama supporter is actually going to lecture the right about flip-flopping and lies? That is rich!!
Grzmlyk| 10.11.12 @ 5:01PM
I guess I should have said that compared to Obama he's honest.
Then again, compared to Obama, YOU'RE honest, and we all know you couldn't pass a lie detector test on what you ate for breakfast.
Sadly, I can't disagree that his economic policies will be more smoke and mirrors. Not as much as Obama's smoke and mirrors, but too many Americans like you simply aren't prepared for reality (Keynesians don't understand any aspect of reality), and we need a huge dose of reality before we go over the cliff. Dems' idea of centrally planning everything while creating incredibly corrupt fiefdoms under crooks like Obama isn't the answer; Repubs' insistence that they can boost revenue by tinkering with tax rates isn't the answer. We need to AMPUTATE whole swaths of the Leviathan, not put bandages on its fingers and toes, as Romney would do, or do more medieval bleeding of the host organism, as you're licking your chops to do.
I actually hope Obama wins, and he enacts all of his policies. Since we're going over the cliff anyway, why not do it quickly? At least the people in the cart - like you - will go "splat" along with those who have been pulling it.
DRed| 10.11.12 @ 5:10PM
Look, I get it. It's tough. You're voting for a guy who got the nomination by lying through his teeth and drowning a collection of morons in money. It's not easy. The best thing for you to do is to convince yourself, in the face of all the evidence, that a cautious, centrist Democrat is actually the second coming of Joseph Stalin. That way you have to vote for Mittens.
You can always vote for Obama if you really want him to win. Don't let me stop you!
JD| 10.11.12 @ 6:31PM
"a guy who got the nomination by lying through his teeth and drowning a collection of morons in money. "
What's amazing is that you can write that and not realize that you're describing Obama. What's less amazing, but more absurd, is that you continue to call Obama a centrist despite having no answer to the following, which I have posted many times before:
Our tax code is larger, more complex, more "progressive" than ever, and more redistributive than ever. Our government spends more in relation to our private sector than ever, and is larger than ever. We have more rules than ever. In every measurable way, we are further left than we have ever been, and continue moving left.
Even the so-called "far right" no longer talks about ending big entitlement programs, which were considered too left-wing for many liberals in FDR's day. Now you have the "far right" trying to save entitlements. No wonder the election of "moderate" Republicans grew deficits and the government in 2001-2008 almost as quickly as Democrats have grown them since!
Despite all this, today's Democrats have the audacity to suggest that the reason we're worse off than before is a move to the right, and that some Republicans are "further right than ever". Have they no perspective at all?
DRed| 10.11.12 @ 7:28PM
Look at what Obama's done. His signature achievement, Obamacare, is based on ideas originally championed by Republicans (yes, I know, not all Republicans). Left wing democrats sure as shit didn't want Obamacare passed in the form it was. He expanded the war in Afghanistan. Left wing Democrats didn't want him do that. The stimulus was much smaller and structured differently than left wing Democrats would have wanted. He took 4 years to very grudgingly support gay marriage. Wall Street gets richer and richer while nobody went to jail following the financial collapse. That's not what left wing Democrats wanted. He's got drones blowing people up all over the globe. There are still prisoners in Guantanamo Bay. Marijuana is still criminalized. Defense spending has steadily risen. We attacked Libya. Obama's expanded a number of W's policies concerning executive power. His environmental initiatives have been small scale. Obama proposed significant cuts in entitlement programs. I could go on and on, but you probably get my drift. Left wing Democrats (broadly speaking) would disagree with the vast majority of that. Obama has simply not governed as a left wing Democrat. That's a fact.
truebluepatriot| 10.13.12 @ 9:52PM

Obozo represents decades of the cornucopia of leftism's bromides. Witness the meltdown from the left as they faced the reality of their empty suit of a president; it wasn't pretty, and their response, upon recovery, was to double down.
I too believe Romney will win, but only because America has not yet reached the tipping point of socialism.
If, or rather when Romney wins, he and the Rs had better get back to articulating fundamental conservative principles loud and clear, lest next time America does go over the cliff.

Facebook is invaluable for understanding the (non-silent) electorate. Obama supporters send out "like" requests without consequence that some of their 'friends' will be offended or disagree. Usually, it's a claim that Romney is a "liar". That seems to be the official spin handed down by the Democrat party headquarters.
They won the right to have people vote in Pennsylvania without ID. Amazing. The dead will now vote.
vtwin| 10.11.12 @ 12:00PM
No, what the court said was people have been voting in Pennsylvania without ID since the beginning so for the Pennsylvania legislature to now change the law and impose Photo ID requirements on the voting public the voting public must have a “reasonable time" frame in which to obtain the required IDs and with the 2012 Presidential election only weeks away the legislature failed to meet this “reasonable time" requirement.

Oh Anthony, Anthony, Anthony, so clueless. Anthony, the wealthy they don’t want you in their homes, unless you're there to work or anywhere nears them. They appreciate your support for their tax cuts, your stupidity, but don’t expect any invites, dervs, or liquors.

Anthony, you are welcome in my paradise of mountain splendor any time. Vtwin, you ain't invited, not that you would come anyway ... the conversation would be too much about fixing the economy and doing away with ObamaPhones, ObamaMoney, etc.
That's not to say that I am wealthy, just a patriot.

Really vtwin? The "wealthy" always have me in their homes, why, we share recipes, where to find the best arugula, family stories, and golf exploits at The Club, over a good single malt of course.
I even advise them in legal matters.
In fact, some of my fellow 1%ers (those of us making over $250,000 p/y as your class warrior Obozo likes to point out) are having a party this weekend, but first, I have a golf match to compete in.
Too bad you can't join us, but we understand gas being so expensive in California, assuming you can get some, that the cost would eat up your monthly budget.
However if you can join us, I have a free room for you, as our maid is off this weekend.
Sorry, we have no Bath Houses in town.

Gosh, Vtwit certainly is an expert on the wealthy.
What impressive analysis!
Is that why you want more free stuff for yourself, vtwin? Because "the wealthy" - and we all know they are one monolithic, evil entity - won't let you take a dip in their hot tub?
Could you explain to me how your support for government extorting money from taxpayers to give to you makes you virtuous?

1. Hypocrite
2. Lies and Hate Incarnate
3. Someone who continually insists that I believe things that I know firsthand aren't true.

After King O is not reelected on November 6 we will have an interesting almost 3 months until inauguration of Romney/Ryan. Actually, regardless of election results, this 3 month period will be a window to the future.
After King O loses, or not:
1. How many executive orders can King O issue?
2. How many unconstitutional EPA regulations can be issued by Lisa Jackson?
3. Can Steven Chu at Energy Dept. drive the cost of gasoline to $7 p/gal?
4. At the Agriculture Dept., how many acres of usable land/forest/water will Secretary Vilsack lock up for the federal government?
5. So much to do and so little time.
After Romney wins, what will all of the czars, and department/agency political appointments, do to cause havoc with the incoming administration?
Will Valerie Jarret implode? Or will she move to Hawaii with the King and Queen to enjoy the money siphoned out of the nation's debt?
Too much to write, so little space.
Cobalt| 10.11.12 @ 10:32AM

The Democrat Party leaders and followers are sick to death with lies and hypocrisy. Their passing will not be mourned. There is not one thing democratic about the Democrat Party.
PolishKnight| 10.11.12 @ 10:24AM
The Democrat party, much like the Soviet Bolshevik revolution, demonstrates that they never achieve a party "of the people" as they claim but rather a bunch of cronies which then engage in attacking their own electorate. In the case of the Democrat party, they are not really against "rich" people (it makes their suburban marxist crowd feel good to pretend so) but rather against the remaining population that they've slowly driven away from them: working and middle class, straight white males and their families.
Think about it: Like the Bolsheviks, they had initially claimed to represent and protect the proletariat. As they needed new voters to survive, they betrayed the group their ideology had sworn to represent and it became a self-fulfilling prophesy: To get more votes from their new electorates, they had to push more of the old one under the bus until it reached a point that the only remaining voters were useful idiots and jerks. Until, of course, the vote becomes irrelevant. Then EVERYONE is fair game: their cronies in political struggles, their new electorate (if they threw the old one under the bus, why not the old?), and even their own family members.
"The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power." -- 1984, George Orwell

It seemed inconceivable to me in 2008 that people were too stupid and uninformed to vote for Obama.
Now that he has a record, which rivals a black hole in its sucking power, we have inconceivable to the inconceivable power. And yet---
Intrade is holding steady at 63% Obama. Why don’t all you people who are now so convinced Romney will win go to that betting site, and put your money where your opinion is? Why, you can almost make 200% on your bet!
Supposedly, the race is still a tossup. So, with a long 26 days to go, I am not very sanguine about the future.
It’s pretty hard to be positive, when every saunter I take into public is filled with visions of sugar-filled “plums”, to wit grossly overweight fools. What do I know, though?
Maybe THEY know something I don’t. Maybe they’re simply storing up as much fat as possible, so when famine comes, they’ll be ready. Yuk yuk.
I enjoy extending this idea to fat heads, as well. How so?
Minds can also “eat” junk “foods”, and after decades of such force-feeding by pubic schools, Hollywood, et al, it’s surely true that for most fat heads & fat bodies only a “calorie” burning diet can restore health.
As one who regularly fasts, to release accumulated toxins and fat, my experience makes me shudder about what’s coming. Releasing toxins too fast, for fatsos, brings sickness.
Boar Hunter| 10.11.12 @ 11:22AM

“We can’t afford what we’re doing as a nation. But you can’t do it with a guy whose entire existence was making speeches. And Obama, by the way, is only doing what he was trained to do, which is go around and make speeches. He was a community activist; what the hell do they do? "So how did your fellow workers take last week's debate," I asked my spouse. I'm always interested in what her fellow workers think since they're into their "Baby's Daddy" lock and stock.
"They're not talking," she replied.
"Kinda like Obama's performance," I countered. Obama has taken Romney's performance and turned it about, saying he lied. He has taken Romney's words and polarized them, just like a good socialist will do. If his policies are so great, the big O had the opportunity last week to strut his stuff. Instead we got silence.
Now for tonight.
RichTex| 10.11.12 @ 11:32AM
I’ve been saying the same thing for several months now. The only way I can tell that I didn’t write this myself is the use of a French phrase - après le débat. A John Kerry*, I am not. My prediction was then, and is now, that Obama would win only 13 states plus D.C. for an electoral margin of 356 Romney to 182 Obama. I was derided as being out of touch with reality then.
The truth is that Obama was never actually ahead in this race. The polls never reflected reality. Some, probably most, were deliberately skewed to show Obama had a lead which didn’t exist. The methodology used was based upon a set of false assumptions, even among the more honest of the pollsters. If you simply look at the percentage of people who believe that the country is headed in the wrong direction, you reach the unavoidable conclusion that Obama will lose.
*The haughty, French-looking Massachusetts Democrat who, by the way, served in Vietnam.

I agree with every word of this article and I'm cautiously optimistic about this election. But I'm annoyed by terms like "the weakest recovery in modern times." Why must we elevate "recovery" to such a laudable level? Why must we constantly base our success on how well we're "recovering?" What we need is a series of administrations who will not mismanage our affairs by overspending and over promising to such an extent that we even need to "recover." It's maddening, it's embarrassing, and it does not speak well of our leadership, to say the least. We should spend our time thriving, not recovering.

We Texans don't beleive is stealing, and thats what todays welfare has become, theft. Way too many people not helping themselves by working, but helping themselves toother people money and hard work. Well, we've had enough down here. We have millions of illegals in our state, yet the United States does nothing about it, well thats not true, they dio. they force us to pay for their schooling, medical, food and whatever the hell else Washington thinks we should pay for. You are right Mr. Tyrrell. I am probably one of the few people who watched 6 hours of questioning of the people involved in Benghazi on CSpand, yesterday. This administration is so corrupt. To think that they had a team of 16 special forces there and General Carter Ham ok'd continued use of that level of assets and somebody in the white house overruled or ignored it is just beyond my imagination of the cruel ineptness of this administration used to promote their ideology that the taliban is dead and GM is alive. It is criminal and I believe an impeachable offense. It just depends on if we have the stomach to prosecute.
Boar Hunter| 10.11.12 @ 12:59PM

both obama and Romney get money from the same place - Wall St & the Pharmaceutical Lobby. There is no difference. They have the same Illuminati masters. The Illuminati handlers probably drugged Obama to make him look bad so Romney will win. Kissinger "advises' Obama. he is his 'handler'. Kissinger was 'trained' at tavistock Insititue, the British think tank that runs all the think tanks and foundations. it is run by psychiatrists and is all about mind control. Freud was the first head. John Rawlings Rees, a psychiatrist was also head; he also headed the World Federation of mental health. mental health is all about mind control and genocide thru the psych drugs which are deadly by design, and cause mental & physical illness.

I largely agree with your analysis.
I also think that there are critical lessons for the public from this whole experience with President Obama. Perhaps you might consider a future article that would summarize a few criteria that the public needs to consider seriously for all future Presidential candidates before casting their vote.
These might include: actionable and productive experience in both the private and public sectors; support of American exceptionalism; support of an unmatched military capability; a record of true support and defense of our Federal Constitution. I'm sure you'd have some others.
Best wishes for continued success.

John Rawlings Rees, head of the World Fed of mental health, said they would infiltrate 4 AREAS; the church, education, legal and medical systems, and also the press, spewing propaganda. That's why. he was speaking to illuminati social engineers running mental health.

Dr's 2nd question is always 'do you hear voices' and anyone who says they hear God or demons is thought by them to have auditory hallucinations, an alleged symptom of psychosis. But it is NORMAL CHRISTIAN theology to hear voices. jesus said "my sheep hear my voice: John 10:27. EVERYONE hears voices, as thoughts in our heads. They come from the spiritual realm. The word 'inspiration' means 'a spirit goes into it'.

God is very interested in the presidential race vis a vis the mental health system. He has wanted to use the race to Expose the mental health system, by having the candidates talk about it, and then have a president remedy the abuses of the unconstitutional mental health system ( violation of the 1st amendment for religious freedom, and the anti-slavery amendments) by EXECUTIVE ORDER. God told me he gave Bush the presidency for this purpose. he wanted RON PAUL to run in 2004 since he has been a prophetic witness in congress for 20 years against all the unconstitutional laws.
God told me a year ago he was giving RICK PERRY the presidency, after he had a huge repentance rally in Houston. Certain things were supposed to happen to bring that about. I was supposed to give info on this issue to him & the others; God's plans get derailed for a host of reasons, our own mistakes & the devil's working against it.

Compared to this guy PostAmerican is down right sane and level headed.

Romney is one of those used car salesman who will claim that the car he'll sell you has a preexisting clause built into your cars health plan, but then, when you need to use the coverage, you will discover the insurance bureaucrat tells you about the hidden death panel clause...
Romney's shine during the debate was a brilliant stream of lies and mistruths without real cures... He edified his exisketch persona... and now we see that he's pretending to be prochoice.
I seriously doubt Romney will win, for Obama now realizes the snake oil salesman he is up against.

Manufactured fear tactics about a health and happy husband, successful father (as far as we know) and I cannot believe swarms of Liberals have been bust trying to find rot. And an extraordinarily successful Capitalist. The kind of person my grandparents wanted to be, when they left their poverty, for Ellis Island.

Always sobering to visit Huffpost and see the alternate universe, with absolute conviction or nasty desperation. Often wrong, but never in doubt, and always the opposite of Liberal, generous and reasoned.

SY, so what your trying to claim SY is that only conservatives are capable of reasoning .... OK SY, I suggest that you learn the difference between Ideological clap trap and good ole American Pragmatism... Todays GOPers are so far to the right of pragmatism that their ideological anchor keeps them swimming with the other crustacean bottom feeders. In other words todays conservatives just swallow what drifts down from a trickle down hateful meme.

THIS IS A REALITY. The massive amount of printed fiat currency in the world seems to be pandemic, for one side we have in the USA, the Federal Reserve Bank announce the release the QE3 in the next months, which means a “bond buying program” and to be bought by other countries. Just lately, The Bank of Japan also announced that it was adding another 10 trillion yen ($128 billion) to its already massive bond buying program. Unfortunately both “fiat printed money” will be paid by their citizens.
What do these countries expect?
To solve their huge debt creating more debt!
We have some indicators that depict the critical financial situation of USA and Japan such a Debt to GDP ratio of 240% and 100% respectively. This is really bad!
This printed money will cause more INFLATION, whose symptom is the increase of prices of products and we will see more world social unrest. For that reason we have to Prepare and Get Ready Against This Inflation. http://theelevationgroupreviews.blogspot.com

Will Romney truly occupy the Oval Office next year? The question many of us out here on the other side of the beltway are asking is, will Obama step down after the legitimate voice of the people is spoken? Martial law seems to loom on this side of the horizon.

I just read today that Romney's up 8 points in California since the debate! I live in this benighted, once-beautiful state, ruined by liberals and unions. Conservatives here need to go undercover to avoid being torn to pieces. Things must be really, really bad for Obama if he's losing points even in this progressive stronghold.

Thanks forthis article mr. Tyrrell !
The sad thing of last nights 'debate' between Paul Ryan (running mate of Mitt Romney) against laughing stock Joe Biden is that with reference to what Ronald Reagan noted about Biden: 'Smooth But Pure Demagogue'' (American Spectator) is that behind his asshole face Biden probably is closer to the neo conservatives like Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle, Zbigniew Brzezinski, John McCain etc. for the US to remain DEPENDENT on Saudi islam oil than his clown boss Obama ..
At the same time Obama wants to blackmail all of them to provoke a Muslim Brotherhood socialist-islamic Caliphate style seizure of the New World Order with entities like the Organization of the Islamic Conference within the United Nations and with the Clinton 'policy' of Muslim Brotherhood Outreach .
RadicalRighty| 10.13.12 @ 2:33PM
I just wish at the next debate, when the two of them meet beforehand, and The First Gay President sticks out his hand, Romney would refuse it, saying, "give a public apology for calling me a liar for the last 10 days right now, and I'll shake hands." Mitt shouldn't let him off the hook for doing that.
