“It’s a drag,” Barack Obama said earlier this week about his
debate prep. “They’re making me do my homework.” This foreshadowed
his lackluster debate performance on Wednesday night. He seemed
disengaged and defensive. He didn’t look at his watch, à la George
Bush Sr., but he was probably doodling (under the guise of taking
copious notes) as an energetic Mitt Romney offered a detailed brief
against his failed presidency.
Romney conveyed the command of a hands-on CEO while Obama looked
like a tired demagogue. His summation was pathetic, dribbling out
some sort of promise about equal effort in a second term. In other
words, he offers more of the same. Romney came up with a good
phrase for his stale liberalism: “trickle-down government.”
Nothing seemed to work for Obama: not his lame jokes about
Donald Trump (why would he attempt humor at a debate where the
audience is sworn to muteness?), not his rote and insincere
flashing of his Cheshire Cat grin, not his recitation of
small-ball, long discredited government programs. Occasionally he
would look up at the camera and address the television audience
directly, which is probably an easier mode for him. Demagoguery is
his reflexive posture and he tried mightily to scare seniors and
stir up hatred of the rich.
But it all seems so exhausted. The canned lines and themes from
2008 haven’t changed a bit. Obama is still rattling on about evil
“oil companies” and people who don’t “pay their fair share.” In
2008, Joe Biden said that the rich, who carry a huge percentage of
the tax burden, lacked patriotism for resisting Obama’s
redistributionist plans. This is still their claim. Obama called
acceptance of his socialism “economic patriotism” at the
debate.
Much of the debate was wonkish and Romney seemed in his element,
relishing the chance to out-wonk a retail pol who prefers the
trappings of the presidency to its policy rigors. Romney’s answers
were thorough, fluid, and detailed, rebutting many of Obama’s
distortions effectively.
He threw in Obama’s face his boneheaded “green energy”
investments. Quoting a friend, Romney noted sardonically that Obama
isn’t even in the business of picking “winners and losers.” Judging
by the Solyndras, he is just in the business of “picking
losers.” Obama pretended to take notes while receiving such
drubbings. (Romney, by contrast, didn’t bother with the charade of
taking notes when not speaking and just gave Obama bemused
looks.)
Obama was straining to present himself as the at-ease
presidential incumbent. But his acting couldn’t prevent annoyance
from registering on his face from time to time, and he snapped at
Jim Lehrer once for stepping on “five seconds” of one of his
answers.
The back-and-forth probably struck a lot of Americans as boring
and insiderish. It wasn’t exactly a debate of big ideas, more like
bickering over policy differences and partisan characterizations.
But this probably worked to Romney’s advantage. He delivered his
talking points with more gusto than Obama. Romney laid down a
good test for the existence of federal government programs: Is
it so critical that we need to borrow money from China to pay for
it? And he didn’t pander to Jim Lehrer while using this
test: Romney told him that he would zero out “PBS” for
that reason. PBS didn’t fare very well all around: Obama later
attacked Exxon Mobil as a greedy oil company of no redeeming value.
Doesn’t Obama at least appreciate its longtime support for
Masterpiece Theatre?
Obama seemed a bit testy and less polished than usual, using
inelegant phrases like “autistic kid.” Strangely enough, Romney
appeared more relaxed. It is probably good that Lehrer instructed
the crowd to remain silent. That’s an easier, less demagogic,
atmosphere for Romney to navigate. Romney lived up to his
credentials as an expert consultant who learns every possible
detail about the company he seeks to jumpstart. In this case, the
company is America and judging by at least this debate performance
he looks far more eager to run it than the president.
Kitty | 10.4.12 @ 6:17AM

That's it: Obama looks like he'd rather be golfing or shooting hoops instead of leading our nation back to health.
Canada Cares| 10.4.12 @ 8:30AM
Indeed. This man-child of a President has been outed for what he is - a socialist demagogue with little real interest in the plight of the nation as long as he can advance his agenda of more government. I noticed that he spoke of what a great job unnamed other countries are doing with socialized medicine but failed to point at one. Maybe he realized that Romney was prepared enough that he would easily have pointed to the nightmarish and perverse results in countries such as Canada.

Too bad you guys didn't run Romney before, eh? Would have saved you a great deal of difficulty in '96, 2000, 2004, and '08.

Appleby| 10.4.12 @ 6:55AM
I was playing the drinking game -- every time Obama said "Five trillion dollars in tax cuts" ... fortunately, Romney shut that line off quickly. The inspired move was insisting that the audience remain silent. Obama cannot function without sycophants and folks running interference for him. As I watched his face, I thought to myself of Marvin the Martian. "Where's the Kaboom? There was supposed to be an earth-shattering Kaboom!"
drudge ette obama| 10.4.12 @ 7:00AM
Exactly, Appleby. Having felt total fear before, I smelled it all over Obama. He had all he could do not to collapse emotionally last night.
Blustering John Kerry as debate coach may be a decision that needs some revisitation.

It was exhilarating to see Obama get thrashed, but also the MSM was disqualified. Mitt even threw in a threat to defund PBS as he ignored Lehrer's moderator demands. It was a beautiful thing.
But on the flip-side, we must not lose sight that Little Hitler in Iran, Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, Putin in Russia and the Chinese Hu Jintao saw this also.
Obama is yet to do anything about Libya. Not even a FBI presence after three weeks as it was CNN that found Steven's Diary and sensitive Papers with names of those cooperating with the Obama Regime.
I do not see how little school boy Barry can be re-elected, but if he is; we are in for a nasty ride for the next four years throughout the world. I am even very worried about now through Inauguration Day for Romney Ryan.

Did anyone else notice that, through the course of the debate, O's face seemed to be headed for the exit. The creases in his jowls deepened and his complexion took on a kind of pasty, milk-turd brown.
In comparison, by the closing statement, Romney's comb back had actually began to levitate, his tie seemed to have somehow loosened substantially and he had a slightly deranged look in his eyes. These are qualities I want to see in my president.

Why was Obama so entirely disengaged last night? Take at look at the Electoral College count. To Obama, having to "debate" Romney is not a critical event of his campaign. Just hold on to the 12 to 15 states which together gets him over the 270 mark and he's good to go for another four. While Mitt may have moved the needle some last night, the Left has itself so entrenched in those few states that together can control any presidential election that Obama is actually on cruise control. He's paid off the unions and Hollywood, and fully expects to be re-elected no matter what the outcome of the "debates" may be. I'm a Romney supporter, but the science of politics has little to do with anything other than what the common citizen rightfully characterizes as corruption. My sense is that Romney is not corrupt and, in comparison to Obama, is not even corruptible. I pray for a Romney presidency, but the numbers are tough.
DTOM| 10.4.12 @ 8:48AM
You obviously don't recall 1980. October was grim that year and hopeful. Then, the economy was not as bad as it is now; then we only had Iran up in smoke, continents and regions are smoldering now.
Don't be so pessimistic. Romney was incredible last night, just like Reagan was in 1980.
Good things are coming...

Obama is not as smart as the LSM believed he was, and when confronted by someone who was familiar with policy details, the lack of a teleprompter hurt him considerably. Romney benefited from a grueling Republican primary, holding his own against Newtus Magnus, so debating Obama was a breeze for him.
We'll see if Romney can keep it up when it comes to social issues. I'm afraid he might not do as well for those debates, though I think if he keeps referring to the Declaration of Indendence or quoting from our founding fathers, he will hit some pretty good home runs.
DTOM| 10.4.12 @ 9:02AM
Vern,
Next debate is foreign policy. Lying about Libya, Egypt, Israel, "more flexibility after the election," China moving against Japan, Fast and Furious on Univision, the euro crumbling, ... Last night is going to look like a cakewalk for Barry O compared to the foreign policy mess.
I just look forward to Mitt's response to what will obviously be an overblown moderator in Candy Crowley. My bet is that she'll be intrusive, interrupting, and all over Mitt Romney. I'm sure that the Gingrich approach to combative moderators will be invoked, only after she has demonstrated clearly how in the Obama tank she is. BackToBasics| 10.4.12 @ 9:33AM
The outcome of the debate was so predictable that a large part of the democrat strategy going in was that Romney would outperform Obam.
Obam is said to be a Marxist. I don't think he understands what that means either. He just knows that government having more power has a bigger chance of keeping him in power. He also knows that bigger government has the greatest ability to stick it to whites of whom he is so envious. These are his 2 driving forces. It certainly isn't knowledge, that was more than obvious at last night's debate.
PJ| 10.4.12 @ 9:36AM
My chief concern concern with the debate was the wrestling of numbers by both of them. A a typical voter, who will he believe about the 5 trillion deficit, Romney or Obama? Logic tells me the typical voter believes Obama just because he's the sitting president (The president's people are betting that the typical American is lazy, stupid & doesn't like change.).
Now you & I who pay taxes & use the long form to declare our taxes to the IRS, know about the concept of loopholes. What about those Americans who don't have a clue, with everything being the same, that lowering the income tax rate & closing many of the loopholes will actually bring in more revenue for the govenment, thus lowering the deficit?
Romney definitely won even with Lehrer's obvious biasness for Obama. Yet I believe it was not a game changer. Axelrod knew Obama's rhetorical weaknesses. He would have made sure that Obama practiced more than 3 days if he was worried that a mediocre performance would be detrimental to the campaign. I think Obama was coached enough to keep his head just above water and that goal was accomplished.
TLP| 10.4.12 @ 3:29PM

Mike in N.C.| 10.4.12 @ 10:38AM
So, several commentators are asking why Obama didn't talk about the 47% speech or the off shore banking accounts. Eventually, they will realize why he didn't have to.
BackToBasics| 10.4.12 @ 3:35PM
One possibility as to why he didn't bring it up is that it would expose the lie that the Rich are not paying enough income tax.
I'll bet that half the population doesn't even know about the 47% who do not pay any income taxes.
Trinacria| 10.4.12 @ 5:34PM
OR....perhaps Axelrod realized that bringing it up would give Mr. Romney a national forum to clarify what he said and explain the point he intended to convey.
OR...like all gutless loudmouths who never miss an opportunity to run their mouth about their opponent but suffer an acute loss of courage when standing face to face with that individual, Mr. Obama simply failed to nut-up, look Romney in the eye, and call him out.
Me? I'd put my nickel down on the latter, but I'd say it's even odds.
Occam's Tool| 10.4.12 @ 7:32PM
Mike: you are in the tank for Obama, even if he arrived at the debates wearing nothing but overloaded Depends and shitting all over the stage while skipping and carrying a pink Powergirl umbrella in one hand and carrying a "Hello Kitty" lunchbox in the other.
I, contrariwise, oppose Obama.
The battle is over two things: how many of you anencephalics will show up to vote, and, what are the independents doing? I don't think "Hello Kitty" won many extra votes among the independents, and he certainly demoralized Chris Matthews.

Finally, using a false name and my newly discoverd foreign nationality, I did get into Columbia.
Even my book publisher said I had a promising future, for a white guy who accomplished nothing with his life thus far.
Harvard Law was a bit more dicy, and I had to resort to a totally new identity complete with my new Connecticut Social Security number.

Alternative universe did you say, pal? You are the landlord of alternative universe.

On the contrary, NASCAR Mike; it tells me that Anthony is an astute observer, with no shortage of examples to support his claim.
Private school in Hawaii, Occidental, Columbia, Harvard, President of Harvard Law Review (without ever having published a single word - an "achievement" that he would later attribute with uncharacteristic candor to affirmative action), "lecturer" at UC Law School, President of the US (without a single hour of executive experience or a single notable legislative achievement). Nah...on second thought, there's nary a shred of evidence to suggest that this bloke has led a pampered life...

Everyone on law review submits a paper for publication, but not all are accepted for publication. Some law reviews will publish the student's name, some don't, but it appears that O did not even submit an article for publication. I cannot believe that as president of law review he did not submit an article. Must have been lousy. If he did write one
, he could easily produce it.
Michele's Columbia article is on the net, and it is incomprehensible.
Maybe O copied Joey Biden's law school article that Biden cut and pasted from a law review. Biden received a reprimand for plagiarism.
My guess is O did write and submit an article, it was not published, and he will not produce it because if probably dealt with redistribution/socialism, his favorite topic.

Well, I didn't go to a private school in Hawaii with no school debt, and no one funded my medical studies---I paid off 80 K in debt 18 months after graduating residency, because I DIDN'T buy a mansion.
Someone funded Obama's Law School studies, though. Suspect an Islamic sheik. Data is available to that point.

Right at the beginning of the debate, Obama said a couple of times that he had cut taxes for the middle class. What?
I was dying for Romney to come back and ask for specifics. Anyone else know how BHO reduced ANYONE’S taxes?
My financial adviser, who has a great history of being right, by letting the market speak for itself, by using some detailed looks at previous presidential races, says it’s going to be Obama. He doesn’t put any credence in polls, but considers specific relationships, such as the stock market, etc.
He STILL believes Obama will win. As of now.
Of course, it’s all about the odds. Well, maybe Intrade, going from 60% to 80% and NOW back to 66% that Obama will win, is telling the tale of the race. Despite the joy of Romney backers, one debate win is like a horse who’s far behind closing the gap. He’s still behind.
The presidential race is like a marathon. Both candidates are in “shape”---know their positions, have their public act together, etc. However, my bet is that Romney is in better shape.
His “shape” is sharp! He has reservoirs of energy, to wit a firm lifelong conviction conservative (mostly) belief. And, when they reach the home stretch, who do you think is the best sprinter?
Obama’s ALREADY “out of breath”.
John II| 10.4.12 @ 10:21AM
It's worth repeating what many have remarked on directly or indirectly since last night's rout.
The MSM's slavish adulation of the Professor over the past five years has finally and suddenly backfired. Nothing was more stunningly obvious last night than the Professor's spoiled character--the character of a man who's never seriously thought about what he says, who has no genuine interest in the world around him, and who has been thoroughly insulated by his idolators from any experience or practice in defending the positions he knows and cares so little about.
Last night our first affirmative action president bore vivid witness to the old adage that what goes round comes round. Perhaps God just isn't going to let America destroy herself.
Mike in N.C.| 10.4.12 @ 10:52AM
The MSM pundits spent a week talking about how the challenger often prevails in the first debate by virtue of the fact he occupies the stage with the President. All they are doing today is confirming their own prediction.
There is a thing about left leaning commentators. Most are Cassandras - all gloom and doom if their champion doesn't score a KO. This contrasts with right leaning pundits who are far too eager to put the champagne on ice.
What I saw last night was essentially a draw. Few votes, if any, changed.
PolishKnight| 10.4.12 @ 11:11AM
I haven't seen that. In the past when the left has done well, they were overconfident in order to drum up enthusiasm from their base. It was clear that Rachael Maddow didn't want to admit Obama lost.
Here's the thing: What leftists enjoy is being Winners and being part of the party of Big Government. Losing is not fun for them. In fact... this is why the party has had to import voters or buy them off via welfare: Normal "middle class" people are not buying what Obama sells in debates. The vast majority of Obama supporters are, as Romney put it, beneficiaries of government: welfare recipients and race/gender entitlements. They don't care about ideology beyond getting a check (or Obamaphone.)
Mike in N.C.| 10.4.12 @ 11:16AM

Ha Ha, I put the last part in there just for you since your gay and like the whole naked bottom spanking thing...or the naked bottom touching thing or the ...oh well you get the idea don't cha!
loulou| 10.4.12 @ 12:24PM
Please don't lump seniors and servicemen in with the parasites.
PolishKnight| 10.4.12 @ 1:22PM
Indeed, Seniors have been a loyal Democrat base precisely for that reason (putting a social security check and free healthcare, for themselves, ahead of the interests of their grandchildren. Talk about robbing the cradle!) Except... Obama and the left's social agenda is too radical even for them.
Regarding sevicemen (and women!): Indeed, it's interesting how nearly all big government workers tend to be democrat except for that base. In most other countries, that's the case except for this: ServiceMEN put their lives at risk for the country not to get entitlements but rather to give. And yes, many servicewomen also make sacrifices, but men still make more due to only men going into combat.
Finally... "evil" corporations. Yeah, corporate welfare is common but the left engages in it as much, or even more, than the right. So I chuckle when they make that claim and I call them on it. The OWS protesters didn't bash Goldman Sachs or George "collaborator" Soros!

George S| 10.4.12 @ 12:04PM
You may have seen a draw but you are voting Obama no matter what.
But...
Out of all the voters who voted for Obama in 2008, there are quite a few of them who are having second thoughts and are waiting to see if Romney can justify their switch. These voters do not want to admit a mistake yet do not want to make it again, so they figure if Romney is dull or unpresidential, then they'll stick with Obama. What Romney showed them last night was the stark difference in competence that can change the election.
That is how Reagan overcame trailing Carter -- the distinction was made apparent during the debates. Prior to that, voters were not ready to abandon a sitting president. The parallels today are the same -- those who voted for Obama thinking he was a better choice to fix the economy (etc) have now seen a better choice in Romney.
And don't forget -- it was Obama in 2008 who got the crossover voters. Those who voted for McCain are not going to cross over to Obama. Today, Obama is only going to get the voters who wouldn't be caught dead voting Republicans. Romney just won over the thinking bloc who had a brain fart in 2008.
PolishKnight| 10.4.12 @ 1:28PM
I know a lot of these in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. They're good folks, and even "educated" (book smarts) but naive. They disliked GW going to war in Iraq and they think the Democrat party is about making the USA more into Europe with nice train service and "free" healthcare. They also don't like the way our healthcare system has become so dysfunctional even as they don't understand the Democrats made it that way.
They're not a lost cause.
The average leftist is a nasty Democrat-party-win-at-all-costs fanatic who doesn't care what it takes even if the "means" totally invalidate the ends. Does anyone think that Obama is going to make the USA or the world into Sweden II? Or more like Detroit and Chicago? But they simply don't want to lose to "stupid" Republicans. At all costs. So they want a massive, destructive welfare state and punishes and destroys producers including and especially the "middle class" they love to claim they care about.

Waal, Mike, Chris Matthews doesn't agree with you, and he has a larger audience. Neither does Michael Moore, or Bill Maher. I wonder which of them: Moore, the master propagandist, Matthews,of the "tingles" phrase, Maher, the Hollywood insider and perennial talkshow host, or a blogger from Mosquitoville know more about media control and manipulation?
These 3 believe in Obama's ideas, putrid and antisemitic as they are. They were talking about Media Presentation last night, NC rube. I think on that issue they, like Barney Frank on the issue of how to manipulate levers of power in Congress (technical, NOT ideological, issues), know a hell of a lot more than you and me.
To put it bluntly, I think Moore's an asswipe, Maher's' a cocksucker, and Matthews is a dipshit in their political views.
But Moore knows how to put together a movie, Maher knows how to do standup, and Matthews knows more about the nuts and bolts of Washington power manipulation much better than you or I. And they say, in areas of their technical expertise, that Obama chomped the choad last night. Very badly. And they are on your side, Mike from NC.
As a brilliant pro in my own field, I appreciate technical brilliance in others, even if it is wrapped up in a loathsome outer covering.

Last night, I saw a President who didn't care whether or not he won. Over the past 4 years, I have watched a President who didn't care whether the country prospered or not. I think that the game for the Chicago crowd was to win the last election. Having done that, they could coaste and fade away.
Having won the presidency, and control of the government, they were in a position to loot the country. Over 4 years they have amassed a 6 trillion dollar deficit, on their watch alone. Does anyone know where that money went? Without a budget, there was no control. Does anyone know where the one trillion stimulus went? Again, no accounting.
After a llife without any real job, other than politics, this man is in the market for a $37 million home. The 50% down stroke was donated by a "friend". And nobody asks any questions. The gang is leaving town with fortunes untold stashed.
Why did Soros" oil exploration company in Brazil get a $50 billion gift? Why did the owners of Solyndra for a $600 million gift? Do you think they had anything to do with kickbacks or campaign contributions. What about the $1 billion in the present campaign coffers? Do you think may that the campaign staff will be paid some pretty high salaries for losing this one?

Jr., Of course there will be pardons. The only reason Rysco is still in jail is because there is still this campaign to plunder. It is difficult to comprehend just how much a trillion dollars actually is. When you are talking about 6 trillion ovedr budget, is beggars the imagination. To ship 50 billion to Brazil, and only ask for a couple hundre million back, is a matter of charity. The folks won't even look for any givebacks. It will be lost in the roundings. So the boys at Solyndra got half a billion. By the time of the bkrcy filing, all of that had disappeared.
Of course, in a sane period, the attorney general might be expected to look; or maybe there would be a special prosecutor; or the Congress would look into it. But not now. No, no one wants to be called a racist. This is Bell, Ca., or Detroit, Mi., or Hewark, n.j., writ large. God help us, as we seem to be incapable of helping ourselvess.
