Time for a Change?
Republicans try to shift campaign momentum with Ohio tour.
DAYTON, Ohio — Reporters circled around Reince Priebus at a campaign rally Monday in Lima and one asked the Republican National Committee chairman what he thought of polls showing Mitt Romney trailing President Obama in this crucial battleground state. Priebus said he was satisfied that the GOP challenger was “within a field goal” of the incumbent, and made a bold prediction: “We’re going to outspend the DNC 10-to-1 [in Ohio] for the next six weeks… We’re going to crush ‘em on the ground.”
Such confidence might surprise those millions of Americans who know only of the presidential campaign what the major news media tell them. More than 1,500 people turned out in Lima on a Monday afternoon to see Republican vice-presidential nominee Paul Ryan. The size of the crowd that packed inside the Allen County Veterans Memorial Civic and Convention Center might seem a significant indicator of GOP strength in the heartland, but it was scarcely noticed or mentioned in the horse-race coverage of the election campaign. Instead, the media’s narrative of the race relies heavily on poll numbers suggesting that Obama’s re-election is all but assured. Among these is the most recent Ohio poll, by the University of Cincinnati, that showed Obama above the magic 50-percent threshold, leading Romney by five points, 51-46.
This theme was made explicit in an Associated Press article over the weekend with the headline, “Tide shifts to Obama in most competitive states.” Such tendentious reporting has drawn increased skepticism from critics, including Tom Blumer, who suggest it is part of a deliberate effort to create a false sense of momentum for the Democrat. And when the media are caught in gross errors — e.g., reporting that 18,000 people attended an Obama rally at a 5,000-seat arena — this skepticism seems entirely justified. In fact, there are reasons to believe the momentum has actually begun to shift toward Romney and Ryan, given the recent debacle in Libya, which Ryan hit hard in his speech Monday in Lima.
“I mean, turn on the TV and it reminds you of 1979 Tehran… they’re burning our flags in capitals all around the world, they’re storming our embassies,” Ryan said, likening the terrorist attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens to the Iran hostage crisis. “We’ve lost four of our diplomats. And what is the signal that our government is sending the rest of the world?” He answered his own question, saying that the Obama administration’s policy “projects weakness.”
Ryan brought home the economic significance of this policy, pointing out that the Obama administration has announced plans to close a factory in Lima that produces the Army’s M1 Abrams tank, which would cost more than 800 local jobs. Ohio’s congressional delegation has so far been able to prevent the Pentagon from closing the plant, but Ryan said Obama’s eagerness to cut defense spending — the only area of federal spending that the president favors reducing — shows an intent to “gut our military,” part of a policy that that would mean “our adversaries are so much more tempted to test us, and our allies are so much less willing to trust us.”
Ryan’s words seemed in sync with a generally more aggressive tone from the GOP campaign, including one new TV ad that faults Obama for failing to “stand up to China” on trade policy, a failure that the ad says cost 2 million American jobs. In a question-and-answer session, Ryan also deftly handled the “47 percent” issue with which the media spent last week pounding Romney. “We want an opportunity society not a welfare state,” Ryan said, pointing out that Obama’s policies have produced the “highest poverty rate we’ve had in a generation.”
The Republican ticket’s three-day campaign swing continues today as Romney arrives in Ohio and joins Ryan for an 11 a.m. rally in Cincinnati followed by a 3 p.m. event here in Dayton, with rallies scheduled Wednesday in Columbus, Cleveland, and Toledo. With Election Day now just six weeks away, and the first of debate between Obama and Romney scheduled for next week, this Ohio trip is clearly an effort to re-ignite enthusiasm among grassroots conservatives.
Near the end of his speech Monday in Lima, Ryan offered a message that is likely to be heard repeatedly during this trip across the Buckeye State: “President Obama just the other day, he said on TV that ‘I can’t change Washington from the inside.’ Why do we send presidents to the White House in the first place? Isn’t that why we send presidents to Washington, to change Washington? You know what? If he can’t change Washington, then we need to change presidents, and that means we need to elect Mitt Romney the next President of the United States.”

I am asking all you good Patriots to get those signs out, make those calls, write to your local papers (knowing that they are as corrupt as the national media). The following crackpot Romney remarks were made yesterday after there was an electrical fire on his wife's plane:
"When you have a fire in an aircraft, there's no place to go, exactly, there's no – and you can't find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don't open. I don't know why they don't do that. It's a real problem. So it's very dangerous. And she was choking and rubbing her eyes. Fortunately, there was enough oxygen for the pilot and copilot to make a safe landing in Denver. But she's safe and sound."
An incredibly stupid remark. Opening an aircraft window? Decompression would rip the plane apart.
The more the man talks, the more I hesitate to vote for him.

Speaking as a pilot with an Instrument Rating...Decompression would NOT cause a plane to become unbalanced or "stall." A "stall" is when the angle of attack on the wing disrupts the design airflow and the wing quits producing lift. Has absolutely nothing to do with cabin pressurization.

Depending on the type of plane and the altitude pilots had gotten down to, an opened window would have possibly evacuated most of the smoke without exacerbating the fire... the fire might burn itself out if it was localized, wires or insulation burning, and wouldn't increase due to fresh air like a gasoline fire would.
And since obama's never made a STUPID remark, in extremis or otherwise, do hesitate to vote for Romney. Since you're a DNC troll anyway.

Earlier this month Chicago Alderman Joe Moreno announced that he had reached an agreement with Chick-Fil-A. The restaurant would stop funding anti-gay groups and Moreno would allow a new restaurant to be constructed in Chicago. The deal had gay rights organizations rejoicing and Christian conservatives panicking.
CEO Dan Cathy said today that his loyal conservative fan base has no need to worry since Chick-Fil-A never agreed to change its stance on gay marriage.
In a statement to Fox News host Mike Huckabee, Cathy said:
“Chick-fil-A made no such concessions and we remain true to who we are and who we have been … There continues to be erroneous implications in the media that Chick-fil-A changed our practices and priorities in order to obtain permission for a new restaurant in Chicago. That is incorrect.”

Pecos Pete, there is a bias problem inherent in scientific observation of the scientist finding the presumed facts to reach his pre-determined conclusion.
Prior to the Enlightenment, societal change or regime change, or what they called revolution meant a "Newtonian" return to a prior cycle. E.g. Cromwell resigned and a return of the Stuart Kings.
Darwin (1809-1882) lived alongside the Enlightenment Philosophers and the new "Darwinian" concept of society, regime changes and revolution changed 180 degrees. When Obama or today's progressives talk of change, they think in terms of Marxist "material productive forces" where economic and political systems simply morph to something completely different. E.g. Capitalism to communism to Rodney King "can't we all just get along" socialism.

Look at Chick-fil-a. They exercise their right to support whatever group they want - in this case traditional marriage organizations - and they are strong-armed into surrendering that stance in order to operate in the Chicago area.

Things won't change until one of three things happens:
The people who are PULLING the cart revolt against the people who are IN it;
The dollar collapses uttterly and the false edifice of liberalism crumbles in the face of reality;
Islam enters the picture BIG time and a demographically shrunken, morally bereft, amoral America becomes part of a New Caliphate.
As for the first scenario, since most of those entities that create wealth in this country - the producers who pull the cart - have long since decided to play "go along to get along" in a death-by-a-thousand-cuts suicide, they are effectively neutered and I don't think there's any fight in those meek little rag dolls.
As for the second scenario, it is a fait accompli. The dollar will collapse - all the damage has already been done, and, in case the patient weren't already on life support, Ben Bernanke has decided to stab it in the heart every month until it feels better.
That will make us prime targets for the third scenario.
And Romney will not do SQUAT to change our fate. It's adios for America - and before you celebrate, liberals, I promise you, you're going down with us.

Thanks, Occie, but I already know "The Bermuda Triangle" (1978) well enough to know that it's a perfect candidate for RiffTrax, and I can't say I'm surprised.
Huston's film career was extremely spotty, lurching between inspiration and imbecility. As an actor, Huston seems to me to have delivered his best film performance in "Chinatown," and that was just four years before the cheapo Mexican/Italian "Bermuda."
I DO wonder at such things generally out of my literary-weenie's habit of puzzling over human motivation, but I'm not particularly surprised. As an actor, Huston always played, well, John Huston, projecting what strikes me as a troubled soul eloquent of his own troubled personal life: a kind of ploddingly restless cynicism--perfectly framed, I think, in his brief appearances early in his own "Treasure of the Sierra Madre." (Remember the American in the white suit whom Humphrey Bogart keeps panhandling?) More to follow if you're following me . . .
And I include "Annie" (1982) among the inspirations before his death in 1987, despite the nasty response of pain-in-the-ass critics. (My granddaughters are my authority for that judgment--what do film critics know?)

I have an image of John Huston burned into my imagination by a filmed study of his career which I saw some years ago. He's in his very late years, hooked up to a small oxygen tank (the medical kind for people suffering from emphysema), and cavorting in the swimming pool of his Mexican villa with a hot senorita about one-quarter his age. All this is happening some time after he had dumped his fifth and last wife.
I'm no shrink, but I've enjoyed a good marriage, raised a house full of kids, and taught language and literature and philosophy to over 6,000 students in the past 40+ years, which I think leaves me with a certain off-the-cuff shrewdness about the human condition.
And I think John Huston had daddy-issues. As an actor, Walter Huston was hugely more talented than his son--albeit just as restless and insouciant.
My guess would be that John Huston pretty much stopped growing emotionally in his early teens, after his parents had split and his affections were permanently divided between the two. The rest of his long life is rootless, intermittently frantic, and erratically inspired.
