Ben Stein's Diary

What Romney Should Have Said

It’s not too late for him to say it after yesterday’s vicious attacks.

This is the speech I would have liked to have heard from Presidential candidate Mitt Romney yesterday.

“My fellow Americans, today is the eleven year anniversary of the horrible mass murders of innocent men, women, and children in the United States by sick, twisted terrorists hiding behind the cloak of Islam. By a terrible stroke, today also marked vicious attacks on U.S. diplomatic missions in Egypt and Libya. These attacks, by raging, cowardly mobs, were supposedly instigated by an amateur e-mail about the being whom Muslims consider sacred and a Holy prophet, Mohammed. This e-mail was made in the United States under the protection of our Constitution, which protects freedom or speech and expression. The mobs who attacked our missions objected to the e-mail cartoon or whatever it was. They have the complete right to object. But they do not have the right under any international law to attack our diplomatic stations for any reason at all.

“My opponent, Mr. Barack Obama, chose to meet this international outrage by apologizing to the mobs in the form of a letter from Mrs. Clinton’s State Department condemning the making of the offending e-mail.

“Let me be clear about this: Mr. Obama is wrong. We have complete freedom of speech in this country. We do not apologize to mobs of thugs and bullies for our residents having free speech. When I take office, the era of apologizing to foreign thugs and bandits for the United  States of America and our freedoms is over. We are not ashamed of being a free country. We are proud of it.

“We expect the governments of Egypt and Libya and all other nations to do their duty under law to protect our embassies. If they can’t, we will take appropriate action. We are not going to be pushed around and we are not going to be bullied by gangsters and we are not going to apologize for the Constitution.

“There was a further default in Mr. Obama’s leadership today. At a time when the whole world is desperately concerned about the certainty that Iran will soon have nuclear weapons and that same Iran has promised to use them to have a second Holocaust against the Jews and ‘…wipe Israel off the map…’, the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, pleaded with Mr. Obama for a face to face meeting in New York when the President will be there for the opening of the UN General Assembly session. Mr. Obama brushed off Premier Netanyahu, head of government of one of our closest allies, saying his schedule did not permit such a meeting. It turned out that Mr. Obama did have time, however, on this trip to New York City to have a comedy interview with David Letterman.

“When reaction to this behavior turned negative, Mr. Obama hastily did an improvised phone call with Mr. Netanyahu and denied his own version of events released earlier.

“This is unacceptable, especially at a time of extremely  high tensions in the Middle East. In the Romney-Ryan administration, peace and the maintenance of security for the U.S. and our allies will take precedence over talk shows and comedy and campaigning, no if’s, ands, or buts. Our administration will take war and peace seriously. We realize this may seem uncool to some, but we really don’t care. Peace is what we are about, and security. Not laughs.”

He didn’t make that speech but it’s not too late.

You know your party is in trouble when Mr. Stein is telling your party’s leader what to say.

Anthony| 9.12.12 @ 8:47AM

You know your party is in trouble when Obozo & Biteme are telling them, we're the best you've got!!!

Jack in Wi| 9.12.12 @ 9:34AM

Stein should go join the IDF if he wants to kill mooslims. He should take all his old pals like Kristol and Podhoretz with him. Romney will tank this election if he keeps following his crazed Neocon advisors. The people of this country are sick to death of the whole Middle East. Close up the embassies and cut off all foreign aid, especially to Israel. Bring the troops home. This country is broke and our troops are broken by 10 years of needless and stupid wars. Let these people figure it out for themselves. They have to sell the oil to live.

Stkman| 9.12.12 @ 9:50AM

Jack,
Mr. Stein didn't say that. You said that. By looking at your comments I wouls suggest you move to Canada. I think it would be a better place for someone like you. Someone who fails to see the common ties we as a country and a poeople have with Isreal.
Jews have not declared war on us. Islam has though, and we have yet to properly address it. I think you have without a doubt shown who and what you really are by your comments Jack.

Jack in Wi| 9.12.12 @ 10:11AM

I agree not all Jews have declared war on Islam not even all Zionists have. But crackpots like Pam Gellar, Nutanyahu, all Neocons no matter what their religion, Libermann, Barak and a lot more have. It is time they all went home to Israel and let the rest of us alone. Enough American blood and treasure has been wasted in the Middle East. As for Ben he should just liquidate all his homes and put his money and his rear end where his mouth and heart is, back in Israel.

Stkman| 9.12.12 @ 10:58AM

Jack,
The islamist decalred war on anyone who isn't one of them 700 years ago. While their have been lulls and yes, even wars to stop their spread, spread they have and usually by killing anyone who disagrees with them.

Surly Curmudgen| 9.12.12 @ 2:41PM

Not 700 years it has been 1400 years that the world has been infested with this highly virulent philosophy of death.

DTOM| 9.12.12 @ 2:42PM

Stkmn, You meant in the 700's - 1400 years ago...right?

DTOM

Occam's Tool| 9.12.12 @ 11:24AM

Awesome diplomacy, Jack---Isolate and threaten a country with 300 nukes.

Mike W| 9.12.12 @ 5:14PM

General Stein is another keyboard ranger neocon. We are in trouble if we listen to him.

He probably support the Lybian intervention last year.

Nick| 9.12.12 @ 7:06PM

An American embassy WAS ATTACKED on the anniversary of the attacks of September 11th, 2001.
The O'Bama regime apologized for America's right to free-speech.

An American ambassador and 3 others WERE ASSASSINATED, and our consulate burned to the ground, on the same day.
The Foodstamp President continued to snub the Israeli Prime Minister and go to fundraisers.

Today, the O'Bama regime is busy attacking the Romney campaign, and planning on going on Letterman.
In his second term, I hear that O'Bama will figure out a way to get the plans to West Point to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Swamprat1937| 9.13.12 @ 12:42AM

Then Mike don't read his column. You are either a liberal or a robot.

Occam's Tool| 9.12.12 @ 11:23AM

Canada is strongly behind Israel now. Jack is an old antisemite, a self proclaimed coward, and a vermin.

Pelleas| 9.12.12 @ 3:19PM

What "anti-semitic " statement(s) has Jack made?

Criticism of Israeli military/domestic policy DOES NOT ALWAYS equal anti-semtic attitudes--if it did, a large percentage of Israeli Citizens would also be considered anti-semitic

(not to endorse most of Jack's other philosophies.. but I don't get strong anti-semitic feelings ,from him, based SOLEY on his dislike for current Israeli policy..nor is he wrong for mentioning the oppression of the Palestinians , which, regardless of one's political view-point, is a very REAL problem

Stkman| 9.12.12 @ 5:47PM

The Arab worl opresses the Palestinians and they have for some time. They use the Palestinians and the Palestinians are worse off for it. Then, when Isreal offers them everything they ask for, they say no, we want more. Sorry, you can't pin that on the Isreali's. Thats an Arab problem that the Arabs have you believing is an Isreali problem. It was the Arabs who told the Palestinians to leave for their own safety so the Arabs could make war on Isreal. When the Arabs lost did they do anything to help the Palestinians, who are Arab by the way? No, they didn't and they still don't.

Appleby| 9.12.12 @ 7:53PM

Come on, Canada pulled its people out of Iran and booted the Iranians out of their "embassy" last week, condemning them in the strongest possible terms for their behaviour toward Israel. Obama wouldn't find a lot of support in this end of Canada. Vancouver, however, is full of Draft Dodgers from the Carter Years; he might get worshippers there.

vtwin| 9.12.12 @ 10:00AM

Neocon, skin in the game, no that’s for their fellow Americans.

TeaPartyNow| 9.12.12 @ 11:10AM

Most of the people who comment on these boards are not too much into the truth if you are talking about how Mitt Romney is a neocon. I know Mitt Romney is the lamest of the lame neocons, but here is the thing, these people are so afraid of Obama, they could care less what Mitt Romney is or is not. They rune 100% on hate 24/7.

There are many who agree, but the really scared ones will lash out at you, so just know their helplessness as to better America as they cower in ignorance.

TeaPartyNow| 9.12.12 @ 11:12AM

Oops, type O they run on hate, sorry.

Al Adab| 9.12.12 @ 1:45PM

Party:
I could only wish Romney were a neocon. At least that would place him to the right of the "moderate" republican (pardon my french) that he is.

DTOM| 9.12.12 @ 2:46PM

Yes, TeaParty, You are the one speaking truth, aren't you.

With your false flag handle, you cannot tell that OBama continuously uses the Constitution as a freaking doormat, or as toilet paper.

Troll begone!!

And of course, the ones who want the government to follow the law and respect citizens - we are the ones full of hate.

When you want to go upstairs, do you take the DOWN escalator?

Remember this friend, everything you know is wrong!

Edward White| 9.12.12 @ 6:21PM

A Jewish idiot makes a film, a Christian idiot promotes it, Muslim idiots kill over it, and Republican idiots condemn Obama.

Get your facts straight: A Coptic Christian Egyptian made the film.

Swamprat1937| 9.13.12 @ 12:45AM

Soooooooooooo what's wrong with that?

scotchieguy| 9.12.12 @ 12:03PM

No, I would say the dem's party is in serious trouble when their no. 1 platform at the circus---errr, convention is the War on Women nonsense, and then they have the chutzpah to have serial-cheater, liar and accused rapist Wild Bill Clinton as the heir apparent to that other pig, Teddy boy Kennedy as their keynote speaker. Wow, have they no shame?

Stkman| 9.12.12 @ 5:50PM

I'd say the Democratic party is in serious trouble when they ahve to have a vote to put God back on the platform. To put God back on the platform meant they had to first take him off. They showed who and what they are. Now the 80 plus % of us who beleive on God will show them what we are.

Anthony| 9.12.12 @ 8:53AM

So vtwin, how goes your San Fran biker boy's campaign to collect cans and bottles to save California from bankruptcy?

Lyneuss Fields | 9.12.12 @ 10:41AM

You are such a butt hook vtwin! Mr. Stein was a speechwriter for both President Nixon and Ford. So this situation is just right for his expertise. And by the way, Ben’s article is spot on about freedom of speech, especially concerning e-mails within America. We should have been ready for this attack on such a sad anniversary in America’s history. It's equally a sad case about our dwindled military readiness. What a total ass you really have made of yourself!

Swamprat1937| 9.13.12 @ 12:46AM

THANK YOU! Ben Stein is my hero.

Alan Obama Fan Brooks | 9.12.12 @ 12:58PM

Jack was proved correct:
we lost and there's notwo ways about. And no, I'm not going to blame Bush, he did not run in '08-- if you wanted to beat Obama you should have run a better candidate.
That goes for this general election as well. There is no longer any leadership in the West, so no surprise this is happening.

CJW| 9.12.12 @ 4:40PM

Our country is in trouble when we have Barack Hussein Clinton- Carter as President. He is as weak as Carter, and unfocused on the terrorrist threat as Clinton.

YES!!!!!. This is what Romney should have said.
Thank You M. Stein !

Imgine the nerve of these Muslims, have they no respect for their fellow Muslim in the White House?
Oh well, perhaps one too many spikes of the football over Bin Laden didn't go over very well, eh? And the MSM will say........ BLAME BUSH!!
Jeez, so much for bowing, I guess Obozo has to get off the campaign trail, or the golf course, and get back into the war room.
Time for General Obozo to strut his stuff again. Send in Seal Team 6, with Obozo in the lead, this time, with video of "The One" in action.

Anthony| 9.12.12 @ 2:02PM

"WE'RE ALL OSAMA'S, OBAMA." So screamed thousands of Muslims in Egypt prior and during the attack.
I guess the Democrat convention got these Muslims all hot and bothered.
Think the MSM will ask Obozo ane Biteme about their "intemperate comments". Naw!!!!!

Bill8472| 9.12.12 @ 9:25AM

Those "sick, twisted terrorists" were not hiding behind the cloak of Islam. They were right in the Islamic mainstream. That's why when the news of the falling of the Twin Towers falling reached the Near Eastern cities like Nablus, the inhabitants came out of their homes to dance with joy in the streets.

That's why the mobs in Egypt and Libya were killing American diplomats and storming the U.S. embassies. Not because of the stupid YouTube video but because it was 9/11 Islam memorial time.

Jack in Wi| 9.12.12 @ 9:26AM

A California Zionist puts out a film attacking the Prophett Mohammed. He is financed by similar nutcases. They knew the possible consequences of their actions. In fact they hoped for them. It is all about pushing a perpetual war on Islam to sucker us into fighting endless wars against Israel's enemies. Enough of this nonsense. Let Israel fight it's own wars and keep it's noses out of American politics. This country is broke and our troops are broken fighting endless wars just so Israel can continue to lord it over it's neighbors. Israel and the whole Middle East is not worth one drop of American blood or one American dollar. Bring the troops home now and cut off all foreign aid now. It only ends up in the pockets of kleptocrats and criminals like Mubarak, Nutanyahu and Sharon.

Stkman| 9.12.12 @ 9:55AM

Jack,
Where is your disdain for the atrocities committed every day by Muslims? Figure it out Jack, Muslims will hate us even if there is no Isreal. They hate everyone and anyone who is not like them. Acting like a coward and hiding from them or trying to apologize for who we are will do no good. Do you think hiding from Hitler would have done us any good? What about bwoing down to imperial Japan or the former Soviet Union? Your an idiot Jack. History has taught us that peace only comes through strength. If we don't lead, who will? Do you think China can do better to lead the world? Did China feed the hungry of the world for the last 75 years? Even the hungry of our enemies we fed. Would China ever do that? You are blinded by your hatred Jack.

C. Vernon Crisler | 9.12.12 @ 10:50AM

Save your breath Stkman. We've said all this to Jack before but he does not listen. He is a Paulista who blames America first, and Israel second, and the Jews third.

Anthony| 9.12.12 @ 1:28PM

So right, Stkman. These Muslims sure have big, delicate, and sensitive ears and egos. Why, their reaction to a single preacher in America and a movie, is to storm our embassy in Egypt and kill Americans.
Jack of course thinks this is proper quid pro quo. So does our embassy staff in Egypt apparently. We know Hillary and Obozo sure as hell do.
We need to rid America of this sick, twisted American hating leftists.

DTOM| 9.12.12 @ 2:48PM

And very thin skins. COWARDS usually do. Insults frighten them as they realize they might actually have to defend themselves.

Muslim is the religion of COWARDICE - not peace.

DTOM

Anthony| 9.12.12 @ 3:45PM

Islam is the religion coming to take over America in Obozo's second term.

Bill8472| 9.12.12 @ 10:01AM

A couple of fighter-bombers (or whatever the proper aircraft would be) flying over the demonstrations and dropping a couple of napalm canisters or CBUs on them would bring an interesting twist to this "Islamic extremist" business.

I bet the world would rise up en masse to shout that innocent Muslim moderates, exercising their freedom of speech (well, the murders were -of course- mere collateral damage and we should just suck that up) were MURDERED IN THE STREETS of Benghazi and Cairo to sate the bloodthirsty imperialistic appetites of the evil Great Satan United States.

Pecos Pete| 9.12.12 @ 9:49AM

Mr. Stein: Well said! Excellent!

I would have included: "And the next time, anywhere in the world, an attack on Americans will be met with unrelenting and total force. Bank on it."

Ken (Old Texican)| 9.12.12 @ 10:09AM

Ben,
a copany of Marinesalready on site with safeties off would have stopedt these things in their tracks.

Let's announce that TODAY!

Al Adab| 9.12.12 @ 1:43PM

Ken:
We could air drop the 101 and 82 on the embassys. That likely would do the trick.

Mike in N.C.| 9.12.12 @ 10:29AM

So, basically, Stein's argument is because we have free speech we should stand behind some idiot who exercises that freedom in a way that is practically guaranteed to provoke violence. I think the terrorist have just been given the prescription for creating untold future chaos. Thanks, Ben.

C. Vernon Crisler | 9.12.12 @ 10:54AM

Yes, free speech is that important. I recommend we have Burn Your Koran day. This is not so much an attack upon Islam or religion, as it is a defense of free speech. In everybody burns a Koran, then the fanatic Moslems won't have anyone in particular to attack; they'd have to attack everybody.

Mike in N.C.| 9.12.12 @ 11:04AM

They'd have to attack everybody. Sort of like they are doing now, right? Brilliant plan, Vern, brilliant. I'm sure you will be safely far away from any possible danger while you courageously exercise you First Amendment right.

C. Vernon Crisler | 9.12.12 @ 11:13AM

So, cowardice in the face of Islamic fanaticism is your answer?

Mike in N.C.| 9.12.12 @ 11:18AM

No, what the President of the United States is doing is my answer.

C. Vernon Crisler | 9.12.12 @ 11:39AM

And what's that? Jimmy Carter type operations? Inviting more attacks by showing weakness?

Mike in N.C.| 9.12.12 @ 11:47AM

In case you haven't noticed, the President has been ordering the military to take out terrorists. I know you would like a neat, clean and quick resolution to this war, but you ain't gonna get it, pal. And, babbling nonsense about Jimmy Carter is going to hasten the process.

Joan Of Snark | 9.12.12 @ 12:42PM

So he's going to wipe out the entire Muslim Brotherhood, eh? Wipe out all those fanatics who killed our Ambassador and were dragging his body through the streets while BO was apologizing to them for exercising our God-given right to free speech?

Don't operate any heavy machinery while taking those drugs.

Purp| 9.12.12 @ 1:41PM

The President didn't apologize to anyone - another desperate lie by the Romney campaign.

The people in fear for their lives in Cairo issued a statement that YOU are lying that the President said. They tried to quell the violence, but of course, Fixed News told the lie over and over again. And, YOU believed them! What does that say about you, Honey?

Joan Of Snark | 9.12.12 @ 2:13PM

“We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others." Barrack Obama, 9/12/12

This is nothing more than a bassackwards apology for the perceived insult. His job -the oath he took- is to defend the Constitution, therefore to defend the filmmaker who is exercising his right to free speech.

Purp| 9.12.12 @ 3:15PM

Joan of Arc you are not. Glad you aren't in the diplomatic corps .. idiot. The concept of "free speech" is foreign outside this country, Sunshine.

Our President is strong, caring and careful and your Bubble-headed Mitt the Twit is being dissed by your own side for his stupidity in foreign affairs.

Joan Of Snark | 9.12.12 @ 9:44PM

It wasn't a "foreign concept" and was strongly supported by the WH during the so-called "Arab spring". So don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining.

It was an act of war on U.S. soil and the proper response is immediate withdrawal of our diplomats AND funding until such time these barbarians choose to come out of the Stone Age.

Mike in N.C.| 9.12.12 @ 6:19PM

This is an American value , not an apology. God, you are dumb.

Mike in N.C.| 9.12.12 @ 6:20PM

My comment is addressed to Joan of Stupid.

Joan Of Snark | 9.12.12 @ 9:46PM

Someone not feeling so fresh today, Mike in N.C.?

Robert| 9.12.12 @ 2:59PM

(Parenthetical comments, mine) "The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals (A Los Angeles Jew) to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. ...We firmly reject the actions by those (Jews with the audacity to insult Mohammad) who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others (Muslims)."

This is not an apology? You, sir, do not understand English!

Purp| 9.12.12 @ 3:18PM

The Embassy under attack issued a conciliatory statement and did NOT get burned to the ground ... THAT was pretty smart regardless of what they really think they calmed everyone down.

You, on the other hand, would be dead. Way to go Brainiac!

You were right, right before you were dead - idiot.

CJW| 9.12.12 @ 4:44PM

Purpie
Maybe your fellow idiot's, Joey Biden, slogan that "Osama is dead, GM is alive" upset the Muslim terrorrist's feelings and they had no choice but to attack our embassies.
Time to apologize, Purpie.

Anthony| 9.12.12 @ 3:51PM

Spiking the football at the DNC convention once too often was a big No, No, wouldn't you say Purp?
I mean, how many times do Obozo & Bitme have to slobber over Osama's corpse.
Now look what these big heros have gone and done.
WE'RE ALL OSAMA'S, OBAMA. Looks like Obozo just unleashed the hounds of hell. Mission Accomplished!!!!

Mike in N.C.| 9.12.12 @ 2:24PM

And, your solution is?

Skippy| 9.12.12 @ 2:40PM

Nuclear f*cking weapons.

Mike in N.C.| 9.12.12 @ 2:54PM

Brilliant. Israel will be collateral damage to our nuking the Arabs and all of our problems will be over.

mzk| 9.12.12 @ 3:26PM

I have been following this insanity for years on the internet and even on talk radio. If I said anything near the murderous talk I hear spouted about people other then Muslims I would be banned from this site and most others. How can all these call for mass murder and genocide be any good for anyone? Hate begets more hate. Refine your language and arguments to a more civililzed and decent tone

Bill8472| 9.12.12 @ 2:54PM

He's using drones to take out the leadership, which is about all he or any other president could do. If we dropped a division of paratroopers on Benghazi, they'd last three or four days, or whatever time frame they're now capable of. Dropping paratroopers is suicidal unless you have air superiority or some way to break through the enemy's forces to supply the airborne folks, since once they're on the ground they're just light infantry. Maybe they'd last a week or so. Col. Frost's battalion lasted nine days at the bridge at Arnhem without supply.

Al Adab| 9.12.12 @ 3:05PM

We could load up the B-52 fleet with surplus hog bellies and drop them all over the cities. That at least would break up the crowd. Let them deal with the "unclean" mess.

DTOM| 9.12.12 @ 2:49PM

So then cowardice in the face of Islamic fanaticism IS your answer...

DTOM

Surly Curmudgen| 9.12.12 @ 2:31PM

Skippy| 9.12.12 @ 2:41PM

Will we be taxed on the bounty?

Purp| 9.12.12 @ 4:02PM

If you want a war with Islam, we'll have to raise your taxes ... so call the Speaker and his friends and tell them to start raising taxes so we can rule the world.

CJW| 9.12.12 @ 4:45PM

Purpie, you idiot, will Harry Reid and Obama agree to raise taxes for a war with Islam?

Stkman| 9.12.12 @ 5:58PM

Purp,
If you haven't noticed, we're already at war with Islam and they started it. Either we man up and get in the fight or we will just become a footnote in a history book.

C. Vernon Crisler | 9.12.12 @ 4:00PM

Waste of good amunition....

THKrupp| 9.12.12 @ 11:15AM

Yes you can support the concept of free speech without supporting the speaker. These people have no concept of free speech. It would be offensive but we should have a day where everyone in the western world posts a picture of mohamed. These people need to grow up. They are so insecure about their religion. Also I would suggest that we mandate that 50% of our foreign aid be in the form of 10,000 btu window units. Its miserably hot in most of these places. Who wants to join a mob when you can sit at home in the comfort of AC.

Stkman| 9.12.12 @ 5:59PM

We should give them a toilet and toilet paper too.

Bill8472| 9.12.12 @ 11:25AM

Freedom of speech, because it is one of those rights that we believe is God-given and belongs to all people, is problematic for Americans. We believe in it, but other states don't believe in it at all.

As a result, our solution is to say that freedom of speech belongs to Americans, U.S. citizens. But we really believe it belongs to everyone.

When we come to a place in history where it seems legitimate to shut people up who are not U.S. citizens, we can argue that they don't have our Bill of Rights therefore the free speech right doesn't apply to them. But there is always that nagging understanding that free speech is God-given to all people, and we ought to respect that.

Problematic.

Bill,
That may be how you see things, but I see them differently, and I think most others do to. Most of us, I feel, do beleive that ALL people have the God given right to free speech. Thats why we don't kill others when we are offended by their comments. Muslims on the other hand not only don't beleive in free speech, but deplore it.

George S| 9.12.12 @ 1:54PM

The violence happened before Romney spoke. What caused the violence?

The 9-11 attacks occurred before Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantanamo could be used to recruit terrorists. What caused the attack?

Quid venit post facit primam. (What comes after causes the first.) Liberal logic in a nutshell.

mzk| 9.12.12 @ 3:23PM

These people commit blasphemy every day against other religions, yet they want to stop Christian countries from speaking against Mohammed. They want hegemony over the whole world.

This is a matter of Sovereignty.

What Ben is saying is that you might say something that is offensive that he doesn't like or agree with, but he will defend your right to say it. None of us agree with everything we hear. At the same time not everyone agrrees with what you or I say either, but we'd better stand up and defend everyone's right to say what they want or to say whay they feel. If we don't, then we will have no freedom at all.

TeaPartyNow| 9.12.12 @ 11:02AM

Mitt Romney will never fight for anything, in public, or anywhere else. He has already said that commenting on social issued detracts from his message about money, and therefor he will not do it.

Think about this, Mitt Romney needed a team of speech writers to create his RNC speech for him. Those words were not his, those words came from someone else. And also at the RNC, he was running on Bain and the Olympics, not his record as Governor.

Mitt Romney is the guy that the D.C. despotic establishment couldn't lose with because he was both liberal and wholly and completely without a spine.

The American People, Jewish or otherwise, have destroyed America by letting the D.C. establishment do the things that they do. The American People have destroyed America by not paying attention to anything or limiting anything effectively, period.

What Mitt Romney didn't say, and all of the things that he will never say, killed true conservatism in 2012. Mitt Romney will never fight the left for anything, sir. That is why the left wins every issue today, because of what Mitt Romney does not say.

And he won't ever give anything but money a voice. It's not too late for him to stand up for the owners of Chick-Fil-A, oh wait, it is too late. Wait a few more days, it will be too late for him to stand up for the Jewish of this world.

We had more conservative candidates. The D.C. elites rejected them.

Longdrycreek-TX Panhandle | 9.12.12 @ 11:09AM

Ben Stein should have limited his words to 100. The world no longer wants an essay to say the essential. Shorter attention spans.
How about:
The Middle East is on fire. Time to bring the troops, embassy staffs, and money home. Move immediately to oil independence to ensure our energy supply. Drill, build all kinds of energy production from coast to coast. George Washington was correct: "Do not get entangled in foreign alliances." We have.
Support our friends, isolate our enemies. and the Muslim world can slip backward in barberism if they so choose. And they have.
Direct. Lacking no ambiguity in intent and purpose.
Not a popular way to say what must be said but what we have been doing since WW 2 has failed..

First foremost, and for those of you getting ready to attack me, READ WHAT I SAY NOT WHAT YOU THINK I SAY, we defend our rights and those who exercise them. PERIOD, FULL STOP. We also hold those rights to be universal, the second sentence of the Declaration, the Bill of Rights, all of it.

However . . . for those of you who know foreigners, who have learned foreign languages, who have lived abroad, you will "maybe" understand the next part of this. Jefferson and Madison don't translate well into other languages. Foreigners say time and time again "unalienable rights" has no direct equivalent in local languages even european ones. There are cultural barriers too. This in no way excuses the attacks yesterday, the countries involved have an absolute obligation to protect our missions, ANY missions on their soil, but when you're dealing with people who don't speak English, take the Japanese for example the cultural differences there, the First Amendment doesn't translate well. That's why promoting "freedom" abroad, imposing it, the way the Founders understood it, can be extraordinarily difficult at times. Again it doesn't excuse what they did, not one bit. But rights as we understand them don't travel well.

George S| 9.12.12 @ 2:34PM

The first amendment is our protector of freedom. It protected the film makers from sanctions here in the U.S. This has nothing to do with imposing our freedoms on foreigners.

If violence against America arises out of our freedom of expression, do we curtail that freedom or do we make it costly to outsiders to apply that violence?

Who cares if they "travel well". After all, protection of private property doesn't travel too well in thieves' quarters. Do we then surrender to them?

Stop making excuses.

mzk| 9.12.12 @ 3:32PM

Yes, but they want to tell us what we can do in the US. According to their logic, we should bomb all of their clerics who balspheme Christianity.

You are completely right - there is no concept of "Free Speech" in most countries of the world.

Either the dictator, military or government in some way censors everything and anything that IS published is government sanctioned - so they believe the same of us.

It's the same for minimum wage, vacation pay, and so many other things we take for granted here. With few exceptions (Europe and Japan), the rest of the world has no concept of anything like what we have here.

Actively supporting (or instigating?) the replacement of Moammar Kadafi with the Muslim Brothrhood, actively supporting (or instigating?) the replacement of Hosni Mubarak with the Muslim Brotherhood, the outrageous treatment of Israel in general and Benjamin Netanyahu in particular leave no doubt in my mind that the current White House has a very deliberate, specific, and well focused strategic foreign policy.

Combine that with a promise to unseal every element of our Fraudulence-in-Chief's personal past history (and broadcast the arrogant crook's subsequent criminal trials "live on CSPAN"), and I guarantee that Mrs. Romney's roof-racking hubby will be spending the next eight years with all his mail addressed to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Mordor-on-the-Potomac.

PM Stanton| 9.12.12 @ 1:21PM

Since this is the rare occasion when it appears AS is publishing negative BenStein comments, let me compliment Ben on making Romney sound less offensive than he was. It is absurd to complain about the US embassy in Egypt releasing a statement condemning a video that the WSJ described as "depicting the Muslim prophet as a womanizer, pedophile and fraud" – " as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions." More absurd, offensive, and unAmerican is questioning the government for this statement as an inappropriate response to the murders when it was made before and by those murdered.

Surly Curmudgen| 9.12.12 @ 2:16PM

"depicting the Muslim prophet as a womanizer, pedophile and fraud"
Is there something incorrect in that statement?

PM Stanton| 9.12.12 @ 2:32PM

Ignoring your racism..Depicting my grade school priest as this (or Joseph Smith) would also possibly be correct. But at my 6'3", if you met me in an alley and I was holding a gun do you think it would be smart to say that to me? That's basically what this video was doing to our Consulates. Do you want to pay the extra tax dollars to create impenetrable walls at every consulate, just so jack@$$es can flaunt their US 1st amendment rights all over the world with insults?

Surly Curmudgen| 9.12.12 @ 2:49PM

Racism? has it been determined that Muslims are a different race, not human? Forbidding the utterance of the truth should never be allowed to occur!

Skippy| 9.12.12 @ 2:58PM

That's the answer!
In the age of instant info transfer worldwide, Americans MUST STOP saying things that offend Muslims.
Since they may take offense, we must shut up.
No movies, TV or articles will be allowed so that the religion of pieces will stay calm.
Maybe if you're lucky, they'll slit your throat last.

mzk| 9.12.12 @ 3:38PM

Precisely.

mzk| 9.12.12 @ 3:38PM

First of all, are you blind? Almost all of the comments on his columns are negatvie. Nothing he says will satyistfy everyone.

So you think Americans should self-censor and not attack Islam, while Muslim clerics continually attack Christianity? Maybe we should just surrender now and declare Islam the state religion.

In the early days of the US, the response was "millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute".

PM Stanton| 9.12.12 @ 4:27PM

Last week my "negatvie" comment was blocked. as for self-censoring in our country never, that is unAmerican. However condemning hatred is not something itself to condemn. Should we say those who are upset about US Flag burning can't complain, that those who condemn Nazi-ism are censoring? Stating that Koran burning is something inappropriate is not dropping to your knees and declaring Islam our religion, it is showing an iota of compassion...and also recognizing that the vast majority of Islamics do not believe the extreme tenets outlined above (just as I do not follow my bible's extremes putting to death those who disobey ancient rules)

Tucci78 | 9.12.12 @ 10:47PM

Hiding behind the cloak of Islam? Stein's ignorance of Islam eleven years post 9/11 is shocking! Eleven years Mr. Stein. Good grief.

Robert| 9.12.12 @ 1:44PM

You can't win trying to regulate the message. The media will ensure it is their message that gets out. Romney prematurely ended his press conference because he realized all the press could focus on is whether Romney's butting into this serious crisis was appropriate. He realized that it is futile to open the floor to questions to him about the unfolding international crisis from a hostile media whose mission it is to destroy Romney's campaign.

Romney will be portrayed as meddling, defying protocol, no matter what he says. And if he said nothing, he would be portrayed as being aloof and incapable of coping with an international crisis. Only their Messiah Obama is entitled to comment.

Robert| 9.12.12 @ 2:43PM

As proof, Rush just played a recording of two reporters unknowingly caught conspiring to ask questions calculated to trip up Romney on the 'appropriateness' of a candidate for president commenting on this crisis.

Surly Curmudgen| 9.12.12 @ 2:11PM

Obama has voiced his displeasure with our form of government and said china being a dictatorship is easier to govern. He has voiced contempt at our poorly written and unusable constitution. He has stated that in a conflict he will stand with the Muslims. He was unhappy that we were paying less than two dollars a gallon for gas. He is feeling better now that he has pushed that past four dollars a gallon. He really... really... really hates that we, this nation, is so productive and as a result wealthy and is working his hardest to make us unproductive and as poor as any other third world country. He has taken up the mantle of dictator. Isn't that so so special?

gfmucci | 9.12.12 @ 5:06PM

"...mass murders of innocent men, women, and children in the United States by sick, twisted terrorists hiding behind the cloak of Islam."

Wrong, wrong, wrong. The "sick twisted terrorists" were not "hiding behind the cloak of Islam". They represented the ESSENCE of Islam. Orthodox Islam calls for exactly what the 9-11 terrorists have done. Islam calls for exactly what the those who ransacked our Consulate in Libya and murdered three Americans there. Islam calls for everything that the Muslim Brotherhood is.

Those who distinguish "radical" Islam separately from Islam are deceived. Islam is radical. Radical Islam is everything that Islam is. It is the opposite side of the duality of Islam. Quit pretending, Ben, that Islam is some benign religion while "radical Islam" is its perversion. No it is not. Islam is a perversion of humanity. Accept and admit this fact. Historic, orthodox Islam as practiced and promoted by Muhammad and its leaders since is a fascist, intolerant, supremacist, political ideology cloaked in a false religion motivated into a frenzy by the fervor of belief in a pagan god.

-

Carl Peter Klapper | 9.12.12 @ 7:24PM

The nature of Islam is besides the point. It is entrenched in the culture of the region and it is that cloak of respectability that the "sick twisted terrorists" are hiding behind. Whether their acts belie a true or a false respectability, it comes down to the same thing: they violate all decency.

Later in the same paragraph, Ben alludes to a feature of Islam which promotes the rabid and violent intolerance, namely their deification of Muhammad and the Qu'ran, so clearly he is not painting a rosy picture of it. The point he is making there is that, even if you think that something is so holy that its mere mention is blasphemous, that still does not give you the right to murder people because they disagree with your assignment of sanctity. One might also point out that logical inconsistency of Muhammad being holy, wanting to murder those who offend that holiness and being unable to do the dirty work himself.

The protection of free speech is precisely the antidote for this kind of nonsense. For if free speech is protected, Muslims will have to confront criticisms of Islam with no other weapon than reason, as well as facing the refutations of the Qu'ran's criticisms of other religions. At the least, Muslims would emerge from that theological openness with the realization that people can disagree with them without being in error, can reject their faith without being evil and can find humor in their faith, as they find it in their own, without damaging it.

There are times in history where leaders are needed to meet the threat head on, those who are not only capable of meeting that threat, but have the will, fortitude, stamina, courage, and true grit to be that leader that is needed. eg; the Union army of the North during the Civil war needed a Gen Grant, not a weak kneed afraid of his own shadow Gen. McClellan.. the same way during WWII America needed a Gen MacCarther, Gen. Eisenhower, and Gen Patton. and in 14980, America needed a real leader ie; Ronald Reagan, not a weak kneed GOP RINO ie; GHW Bush..

Today, what America needs is another Ronald Reagan, not a weak kneed GOP establishment RINO Romney, but unfortunately, we haven't.. What we have is a Mr RINO Romney.. But I guess, this is what the Primary voters wanted.. So pushing Romney to be aggressive, aka a strong conservative leader, is not being wrong, for at this point i time, America can ill afford to be polite and PC, as the enemies of America, from Obama to the arab islamiuc muslim extremist world in the middle east, do not play by the Marquis of Queensbury rules..

When will leaders of either party understand that it's insufficient to simply denounce "terrorists?" The assailants are certainly that but they have a name: Muslims. The proper term is "Islamic terrorists." And it isn't some certain Muslims who have "hijacked" their religion (as President Bush stated in 2001); it is Islam itself that hijacks the best of human nature.

As political consultant or speech writer, you're fired. Your response should be to the prez campaigning in NV after an international debacle and saying Romney jumped the gun. Dweebs don't make it as prez and O is lower case.

Why is it that some people keep believing and thinking that Romney is a great American patriot, who is the anti-Obama.. Rubbish.. Romney could care les about being seen or perceived as a strong patriotic conservative Republican leader he only cares about himself and his agenda, his way.. not the American people's way. Why do you think his attitude towards conservatives to be more like Reagan, is responded and replied with an implied middle finger.

Romney is a GOP establishment progressive RINO, and as such, he and his ilk, Boehner, McConnell, McCain, etc, are not pro-American because they are Republicans.. they and their interests re purely self motivated, ie; they are pro-progressive RINOs first, Americans second or even third.. Party Loyalty, Power and Control of the apparatus, thus the tax payer money to further their RINO anti-conservative self-interests.. Which mean their #1 enemy are conservatives, particularly Tea Party Reagan grass roots conservatives, then Obama and the Democrats and their allies, the arab islamic muslim fundementalists / radical extremists.

They despise and have nothing but utter contempt and disdain for Ronald Reagan, and all Reagan Conservatives, ie; the Tea party. Their only priority is Party loyalty, thus self-loyalty.. Power and Control of the party apparatus, ie; access and control the tax payer money to further their RINO anti-conservative self-interests is all they care about, and if that means colluding with Democrats against conservatives, all the better.. Which means their #1 enemy are conservatives, particularly Tea Party Reagan grass roots conservatives, then Obama and the Democrats and their allies, the arab islamic muslim fundementalists / radical extremists.

Mr. Stein,
Maybe this SHOULD be sent to Mr. Romney so he CAN make this speech. It is something that needs to be brought to the attention of ALL Americans.
