Convention Intentions

Sometimes Democrats can simply be too brilliant for their own good.

What to say about the Democratic Party’s convention problems? Specifically their infamous decision to remove the word God from their official party platform? It’s hard to say which is more risible; their sloughing the whole thing off by calling it an oversight, or the raucous floor vote to correct the supposed faux pas, which proved to anyone with eyes and ears that it was no such thing.

Of course we’ve been told by countless liberal flacks that party platforms aren’t really important and certainly not binding on those at the top of the ticket; quite a difference from the brouhaha over the pro-life language in the plank put forth by the GOP, for which Mitt Romney was held eminently accountable by the mainstream media. No, the Dems will have a hard time covering up this instance of being caught with their pants down.

To no one’s surprise, the two conventions were vastly different in both scope and content. The Republicans in Tampa conducted what you would expect: a thorough, though maybe a tad uninspiring litany of the failings of the incumbent president and the plans to rectify same. But in Charlotte, lacking any successful Obama accomplishments on which to hang their hats, Democrats resorted instead to a celebration of what they feel are their finest attributes; a compilation of their greatest hits, so to speak, which consisted mainly of these: diversity, inordinate love for government, support for homosexual marriage and their overwhelming desire that all women should have paid coverage to escape the consequences of whatever sexual escapades in which they care to indulge.

Yes, the Democratic convention was chock full of heartwarming testimonies; from a supposedly impoverished college woman who needs our dough to pay for her contraception, to the president of Planned Parenthood, an organization that needs our dough to murder children in the womb. How wonderful it was to hear these paeans to the culture of death from the mouths of wives, mothers and grandmothers!

But the image that will last is the video of the floor vote to restore to the party platform a mention of God and the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. This demonstration of Democrat values, complete with its angry gestures and booing, was on display for all to see as even most of the networks could not avoid showing the obvious disdain emanating from many of the delegates.

What all broadcast and cable networks, save Fox News, did not show of course, was the closing benediction from Timothy Cardinal Dolan who, to the initial dismay of many faithful Catholics, myself included, waded into the belly of the beast in Charlotte to deliver this prayer to God in the midst of the party of abortion: “Thus do we praise you for the gift of life. Grant us the courage to defend it, life, without which no other rights are secure. We ask your benediction on those waiting to be born, that they may be welcomed and protected.”

But sheer audacity ruled the day in Charlotte, as the powers that be saw fit to parade a plethora of Catholics—forbidden by the Church to support abortion—to give tacit and not-so-tacit approval of their most cherished desire to rid the nation of unwanted children. Caroline Kennedy, who quizzically said, “As a Catholic woman, I take reproductive health seriously,” is the latest poster child for Catholics who put party first and God second. But couple the onerous HHS contraception mandate with the incessant abortion drumbeating, and you find Obama losing support among Catholics and women, two of his most crucial voting blocs.

If you think these are merely the wishful ravings of a committed right-winger, consider the following: Cokie Roberts on ABC’s This Week opined: “I think this Democratic Convention was really over the top in terms of abortion. Every single speaker talked about abortion. And you know at some point you start to alienate people.” And then there was longtime lefty Margaret Carlson weighing in with:

Last week, Democrats feasted on the extreme positions of Rep. Todd Akin of Missouri during the Republican National Convention. Yet Democrats have gone too far in the other direction, threatening their hold on the great American middle. Abortion is a more delicate subject than our fierce, partisan arguments would have it.… Abortion won’t be a defining issue for Democrats this election, but the party’s more militant posture guarantees that bipartisanship is still a long way off. On this issue, we can’t get along. But it wouldn’t hurt to put the word “rare” back in the platform.

If even diehard Democrat women like Carlson and Roberts agree that there was too much emphasis on abortion, you know that this is undeniably true. Add to this the palpable aversion to the God of creation and the glorification of the gods of government and you get an idea of the priorities of the Democrat Party. Yet it appears that the liberal plan to win the hearts and minds of Americans, particularly American women, is to ignore their economic woes and fiscal fears, and to concentrate on what they believe is vitally important: killing unborn children and ensuring that their fellow gals be compensated for their sex lives. Brilliant.

Democrat Party of Abortion?
Could Democrats ever just cut the abortion cocktail drink with an admonition that maybe abortion harms society, the family, the individual, and, most importantly, the baby?

The contraceptive issue isn't the same as abortion - contraception is more of a red herring unless people are forced to pay for it for others.

Caroline Kennedy is too indoctrinated to seriously examine her statements. Most people don't know who she is, anyway.

R Martin| 9.12.12 @ 7:40AM

I know who she is. She comes from a family of ethically challenged manipulators and by equating killing unborn babies with women's reproductive health she shows her true colors.

spike59| 9.12.12 @ 4:49PM

i've long felt that the Democrats' odd obsession of equating "womens' issues" exclusively with abortion and (free) contraception is an indication of their opinion of women; namely, that women are nothing more than 'life support systems for vaginas'

Aristocat| 9.12.12 @ 6:57AM

Mr.Romney agrees with Obama on abortion in cases of rape and incest, on gay adoption, on forcing insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions and keeping children "of any age" on their parents' insurance. My question is:
What does Mr. Romney disagree with Obama on?
Give me a reason to vote for you, sir.

Von Mises Jr| 9.12.12 @ 7:35AM

I have not heard Mitt say he wants to reduce our military and nuclear arsenal by 90%.
I have not heard Mitt say he wants to tax the shit out of "fat cats."
I have not heard Mitt say he wants to bankrupt coal companies and his surrogates express desire to crucify oil companies.
I have not heard Mitt say he wants to nationalize the rest of the economy like GM and student loans.
I have not heard Mitt say that he wants to reward his crony capitalist through more Solyndra, Sun Trust and Ener1 scams.
I have not heard Mitt say to Hispanics that they should "punish their enemies."
I have not heard Mitt say he wants to issue Executive Orders outside the Constitution for amnesty and undermine democratic voting laws.
Perhaps you should go back to bed, Aristocrat. Apparently you are not awake anyway.

Zeppo| 9.12.12 @ 12:47PM

Mitt is by far the lesser evil, no question. One cheer?

Aristocat| 9.13.12 @ 1:27AM

I have not heard Mitt say how he disagrees with Obama...That's my point...

DarkMan| 9.12.12 @ 7:35AM

He has a real birth certificate?

AhiaBoy| 9.12.12 @ 11:50PM

Here's a few reasons to vote for Romney over Obama, Arist:
1. Romney, unlike Obama, loves America;
2. Romney, unlike Obama, isn't a Marxist;
3. Romney, unlike Obama, believes in capitalism.
Enough for you?

Aristocat| 9.13.12 @ 1:32AM

No, I want Romney to come out and say directly how he disagrees with Obama...
He has never said Obama doesn't love America...
He has never said Obama is a Marxist..
He has never said Obama does not believe in capitalism...
This is war for the future of our country and he needs to come out and fight against Obama, not say "He's a nice guy and I agree with him on..."
(all the things I mentioned above...)
Romney needs to say:
"Obama believes X & I profoundly disagree..
I believe Y..."
Get it? If Romney just says, "Obama is a nice guy and I agree with him..." why would anyone vote for him?

Appleby| 9.12.12 @ 7:21AM

Look out, Aristocat. People will soon be gathering here requesting that you kill yourself for having espoused doubts about Romney.

Zeppo| 9.12.12 @ 12:44PM

Don't mind TLP. He is a buffoon.

Dodd2| 9.12.12 @ 7:49AM

When even Cuckoo Roberts notices that the Democrats are ODing on abortion, you know they've jumped the shark.

Von Mises Jr| 9.12.12 @ 7:51AM

Here is the dirty little secrets the regime and MSM does not want to talk about.
They took God and Christianity out of their platform, and now their Muslim Brother buddies have burned the Consul in Libya and tore down the flag while attacking the Egyptian Embassy. Counts on injury and deaths are awaiting confirmation.
The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt is sharpening their axes to cut down trees to crucify the 10% Coptic Christians. Nothing to see here Catholics.
The mad Mullahs are even talking crazy talk for mad Mullahs, and Bibi and the Israeli government is in open hostilities with our Muslim Brotherhood sympathizers in the regime.
The union thugs are ramping up in Shitcago to defend $75K average salaries, $40K pensions at 50, and $25K health care plans for life for 9 months of working 5 hrs and 45 minutes per day with almost zero accountability.
This is the news in the headlines today. And Dear Leader “Empty Chair” and his girl Hillary are on the wrong side of everything.

c. j. acworth| 9.12.12 @ 8:23AM

The headline scrolling across my screen as I type this says our ambasssador and two aides are dead. OUR AMBASSADOR. Ok, what part of Lybia do we incinerate first?

Von Mises Jr| 9.12.12 @ 9:00AM

We already incinerated the "Wacky" Kaddafi regime. I think Michelle wanted his wardrobe?
These are Obama's boys in the hood. I think he should just tell them not to shoot the kids. That is the Chicago strategy.

Al Adab| 9.12.12 @ 1:50PM

The DEMs make nbo secret of who and what they are. It is just that voters can't believe that the once proud, patriotic party wants the decline of the country. Four years ago they told us they would "fundamentally transform America" and we didn't believe them. Now they show themselves as the cenntralizer, statists, tyrants and idoloters they are and still we don't believe.

MarkS| 9.12.12 @ 8:21AM

The move to strike God and Jerusalem from the Democrats' party manifesto was of no great shock to me. Sure, they let the mask slip but only to reveal an unlovely face political obsessives already recognize. Of course it was inevitable but Libs have historically been pretty self-disciplined about hiding their growing disdain and contempt for the values and mores of their normal countrymen so my surprise was more for the PR blunder of it. I chalk it up to frustration and a gnawing fear they're going to get their clock cleaned worse than Jimmy Carter.

What I found very interesting and far more revealing was in the open, brazen overruling by Villaraigosa of the trice NO! vote to try to undo the damage and the subsequent Pravda-esque reports that the world didn't see what it saw or hear what it heard in living color. We could say he "deemed" it to have passed and everyone from the incensed delegates to the media cheerleaders fell in line. THAT little bit of Stalinism tells us much more about these "Democrats" and how they'd rule if ever really given their way.

They must be defeated.

spike59| 9.12.12 @ 4:42PM

...the attempt by DWS and much of the MSM to flush the entire bizarre episode down the Memory Hole the very next day speaks VOLUMES about the Dems...not to mention the endless parade of abortion worship

Black Orpheus| 9.12.12 @ 8:28AM

Pants down? Nah! More like their skirts hiked up over their heads.

Pecos Pete| 9.12.12 @ 10:23AM

And, how about the part where the retired admiral spoke on behalf of the Armed Services with a picture of Russian ships behind him? Are these Obamacrats smart, or what?

I am waiting for the Jay Carney comedy act today where he mumbles his way through a defense of Egypt and Libya.

As MarkS said, "They must be defeated."

PolishKnight| 9.12.12 @ 12:40PM

Lisa, I'm reminded of highly educated 13th century monks arguing over the different propulsion methods of witches' brooms using advanced calculus. OK, that probably didn't happen but my point is that their dogma which was useful at one point is now becoming a burden for them and even a bit of a joke.

Most women today do not fret about abortion rights so those commercials with fearful "lifetime TV" women scared that Romney will take away their abortion rights are laughable. Don't they get it? Even if Romney was elected, Roe V Wade would take years to be overturned and then it's unlikely that abortion rights would be lost due to states rights (oh, wait, thanks to Robert's recent decision, anything is fair game if it's "taxable". How about a $20K abortion "tax?" :-)

But sure, even so, who cares? Most young women don't celebrate with glee their ability to sleep around with plenty of guys. They instead long for the days of old fashioned "chivalry" and breadwinner men to support them. And the left has done it's best to destroy such men. The REAL freebies they crave are a full substitute husband but rather than Wally Cleaver, they get the government's version of a peasant who gives them sub-par housing via the welfare state. "Middle class" women have been abandoned by the left and they either don't know it yet, or don't know what to do.

Kwan| 9.12.12 @ 1:01PM

The pagans that currently populate the Democrat Party must believe that sacrificing these defenseless little ones to their pagan gods will somebody garner their approval. Perhaps Obama in his next term can allot in his next 10 trillion dollar "economic stimulus package" some money to construct some Aztec Human Sacrifice Pyramids around the country, so that these abortions can be performed in a more ritualistic atmosphere.

Mazzuchelli| 9.12.12 @ 2:44PM

I find the comments downplaying the importance of the platform a concern. Locally here in Iowa's most conservative 5th District, we take that language extremely seriously with individuals arguing their positions against the larger group for extensive periods of time. Everyone who has an issue is given face time, no matter how small or large the venue. Is it tiresome? Well, hell yes. But, at the same time, it proves that the party, in this case Republican, represents the constituency. That is why I was unhappy to read Michelle Malkin's comments about Romney-campaign led changes to Republican convention rules. I'm not quite sure what, if anything, actually occurred but it would be very good to know. It won't change my voting choice this November, but it might draw down my contributions.
