The Obama Watch

A Black Flag Day for America

Guaranteed to be so by the official U.S. response. (UPDATED)

On a pretense of anger about an anti-Islamic film, “ultra-conservative” Muslim “protesters” attacked the U.S. embassies in Cairo, Egypt, and Benghazi, Libya, on Tuesday. (Short video of the Cairo mob here.)

In Egypt, some of the protesters scaled the embassy walls, went into a courtyard, and took down the American flag. They tried (and failed) to burn it, then tore it up, and then put up a black Islamic flag.

My immediate question is this: Why did the first terrorist to touch our flag not have his head blown off? Or perhaps: Why did the first terrorist to touch our flag not receive a “warning shot” to the arm or leg, and the second terrorist, who presumably was not impressed by the admonition, not then have his head blown off?

The AP reports that the attack in Libya was far worse:

In the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, a large mob stormed the U.S. Consulate, with gunmen firing their weapons, said Wanis al-Sharef, an Interior Ministry official in Benghazi. A witness said attackers fired automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades at the consulate as they clashed with Libyans hired to guard the facility.

Outnumbered by the crowd, Libyan security forces did little to stop them, al-Sharef said.

The crowd overwhelmed the facility and set fire to it, burning most of it and looting the contents, witnesses said.

One American was shot to death and a second was wounded in the hand, al-Sharef said. He did not give further details, and there was no immediate U.S. confirmation of the death.

On Wednesday morning, we learned that the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, and three other embassy staff members were killed in the attack. President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton offered statements of outrage and condolence, but some of the blame can be found when they look in the mirror.

Again, I ask, why are there not dozens of dead Libyan radicals lying on the American sovereign territory they were invading?

The offending film, of which you can see a 14-minute clip here, is a pathetic farcical joke of a film which comes across as more like Monty Python than a serious critique of Islam or anything else. Furthermore, it was posted to the web two months ago.

Much as radicals used the Koran burning incident to justify murder in Afghanistan early this year, there can be no doubt that Tuesday’s protest used this ridiculous movie as a pretext to attack America on September 11.

The U.S. Embassy in Cairo offered an apology for the film that it claims was issued before the protest started. Color me skeptical on that aspect, but even so the statement was a pathetic embarrassment — and perfect reflection of the thinking of the blame-America-first Obama administration:

The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims — as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others.

This is, not surprisingly, a remarkable misstatement of the First Amendment. Saying something offensive is not “abusing” free speech. And what about the Islamic world, or even much of Europe, makes them claim that the right of free speech is “universal”? Perhaps they meant in theory rather than in practice, in which case our Founders might agree, but what is the point of making a statement like that to people who will never believe it, and who will take such a statement as incitement to further violence simply because it proves that we have decided on a suicidal strategy of Islamic rope-a-dope… from which we will never suddenly hit back.

I am disgusted that while radical Islamists were attacking these embassies, that Obama was playing around with the Pimp with the Limp, and Biden was cozying up with the biker broad.

Israel needs our public support. It may have it with many of our people, but not the Democrats and not with our foolish and childish president.

Where is the American Jewish position on this very important subject. Where is South Florida on this issue? Why is "never again" lost on the American Jewish population?

drudge ette obama| 9.12.12 @ 6:27AM

Hillary Clinton is an absolute failure as Secretary of State. We all know she aligns with the Palestinians and has contempt for Israel. Just ask Dick Morris what she said to him once.

If you don't like what is happening in Cairo or in Libya leave and cut all foreign aid. As for Nutanyahu the old war crimial, racist, and terrorist, good. He has been trying to push us into doing his crimes and wars long enough. It is time to kiss the Israeli's goodbye as well. They spy on us at will, sell our secrets to whoever pays the most money, and continually interfere in our political life by bribing blackmailing, and intimidating our political class using our own laundered foreign aid money. Remember the USS Liberty.

Our friend above Ross wants us to kill people attacking our embassy like they were dogs. Our embassies have been attacked many times and not just in Muslim countries, over the decades. We have have never done as old Ross wants. It isn't worth it. Close up the embassies and leave if the personel can't be protected. It isn't worth going to war over. The more we stick our noses into the business of these countries the more enemies we make. The blood of every innocent we kill leads to many more terrorists spring up against us. Every empire in the history of the world has crashed and burned eventually do to fiscal bankruptcy and over reach. We have reached that stage now. Bring home the troops, close up the empire, and lets get back to restoring America.

Darin| 9.12.12 @ 8:29AM

Jack in Wi refuses to understand that Muslims want non-Muslims converted, subjagated, or dead. There is no other option. Islam has been at war with the west since the religion was founded, and Islam has been at war with America since our nation was founded. The Barbary Pirates were Muslim raiders, and their preying on commercial shipping persisted until Jefferson built up the Navy and sent the Marines "to the shores of Tripoli."

Grzmlyk| 9.12.12 @ 11:21AM

Jack's philosophy - and it is classic libertarianism - reminds me of the old adage: "If rape is inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it."

And if Muslims want to annihilate Israel, who is Israel to complain? Netanyahu is far worse than the islamicists, for whom a modern caliphate is the furthest thing from their minds. They just want to co-exist with non-Muslims, and if we weren't so gosh darned imperial, and didn't stick our hands into the hornet's nest, we wouldn't get stung.

So what if the hornet's nest begins to crowd out all else? Perish the thought! If we just stick to our knitting, it'll never happen. Jack promises.

And when Islam begins subjugating America in earnest, well, who are we to object? God forbid we crank up the war machine to defend ourselves.

It isn't worth it.

Jack in Wi| 9.12.12 @ 9:05AM

Many millions of Christians lived under Muslim control for many centuries in Greece, Serbia, Hungry, Turkey, Romania, Bulgaria, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Palistine, and Iraq. They weren't forcibly converted except in rare circumstances. So your whole premise is a lie.

WRTolkas| 9.12.12 @ 9:09AM

Yes Jack - they lived as slaves and second class citizens.

Jack in Wi| 9.12.12 @ 9:40AM

You mean like you treat the Palistinians now? Anyhow they were not forced to convert in most instances, so I am right. We empower the radicals by our policy and interference in the business of these countries. They hate us because of that reason.

Stkman| 9.12.12 @ 10:11AM

Jack,
We've supported the Palestinians and have given them billions of dollars in aid. Have you ever bothered to ask why none of their Arab brothers help them? Did you not see what the Palestinians did to Jordan or Beirut? They are their own worst enemy. They have been offered deal after deal and more than once offered everything they asked for and still they refused it. Face it Jack, you are a bigot and an anti-semite and nothing more.

DTOM| 9.12.12 @ 10:16AM

For the same reason that Obama's brother didn't bother to call him for help with family medical bills. Obama's brother called the guy who made the movie 2016 for help, not his brother.

So why would the Arabs pay to support their Palestinian "brothers" when they can con Hillary into doing it. With the help of Huma Abedin, Hillary's Chief of Staff who is the daughter of one of the founders of the Muslim Brotherhood!

That's burning coffee, you are smelling!

Don't Tread On Me!

Jack in Wi| 9.12.12 @ 10:35AM

I am no antisemite. In fact I love the Jews. I want them following the Torah and Commandments God gave them. God tells the Jews in the Book of Leviticus. " To love your neighbors as yourselves." Farther along in the Book God tells them. " To treat the aliens and strangers among you well. "
In the book of Exodus God tells His chosen people to. " Treat the aliens and strangers well for you were once aliens and strangers in the land of Egypt. " Let Israel be a light upon the nations instead of the blight and cancer to the world it is now. Follow the Torah and love your neighbors as yourselves.

God gave the Ten Commandments to his chosen people who gave them to the whole world. Our Zionist friends have forgotten a few of them.
Thou shalt not kill.
Thou shalt not steal.
Thou shalt not bare false witness.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors' property.
Return to God. Return to the Torah. Follow the 10 Commandments. Shalom.

Alan| 9.12.12 @ 11:14AM

"I am no antisemite. In fact I love the Jews"

Jack in Wi.| 9.10.11 @ 10:04AM
"Whatever good individual Jews have done in the world pails in comparission to the bad of the last 200 years. Atheism, communism, Socialism, Nuclear Weapons, expansionist Zionism, and nuclear blackmail"

Yeah, Jack the ass just loves Jews.

Jack in Wi| 9.12.12 @ 4:47PM

Alan: That is exactly what I mean. All these horrors on the world were spread by Jews who abandoned God, The Torah, and the 10 Commandments.

Return to traditional Judaism if not the true Savior and Messiah of the whole world Jesus Christ. Christ gave us the 2 great Commandments.
Love God with your whole heart and whole soul.
Love your neighbors as yourselves.
No real Jew should have any trouble with those. They come right from the Torah.

DTOM| 9.12.12 @ 11:23AM

Jack it is NOT "Thou shalt not kill"

It is "Thou shalt not murder."

The righteous taking of life is not a problem.

You may freely, easily, and happily light up the guy pointing a gun at your child.

There ain't no hell in righteous killing. That's a recent liberal bible re-write.

Listen carefully and you can also hear them say that the Bible doesn't say no homosexuality. Which in fact it is quite clear and unequivocal about how it is wrong.

And how the heck confused are you telling people to read the Torah, most famous anti-semite on the TAS?

We are not drunk, are you?

Or have you gotten your login id's mixed up?

DTOM

Surly Curmudgen| 9.12.12 @ 3:13PM

It was "thou shalt not murder" to kill is sometimes necessary. The Jews in Israel followed the Torah and were murdered for their kindness. Now it's trust but verify. The Israelis should assert their claim to the entire 1920 mandate. Look that up sometime Jack.

GGM| 9.13.12 @ 4:02AM

I know you are the sharpest tool in the shed so I wouldn't expect you to know there is no "Palestinians" . The Jewish people cannot be occupiers of their own land. By international law, the Jewish National Homeland consists of the present day Israel, the so-called "West Bank" or "Palestine”, Western Jordan, Gaza, The Golan Heights, and Southern Lebanon from the Israeli border north to the Litani River. Any non-Jews who live there are not indigenous people, but predominantly trespassers. They are Egyptians, Syrians, and Arabs from the Arabian Peninsula. They were brought in by the evil empire Little Britain, who violated their mandate to govern the Jewish National Homeland while encouraging and facilitating Jewish people to return to their eternal homeland. Once there were sufficient infrastructure and a larger Jewish population, the British were by international law compelled to get their imperialist behinds out the Jewish National Homeland. But just as they have done in countless other locations, they persecuted the indigenous people (Jews), created dissension by bringing in trespassing Arabs, and only were concerned with what benefited their filthy little island. They are the greatest war criminals in world history. There is no, and never was any people or any ethnic group of Arab Muslims which were referred to as Palestinians. They don't even refer to themselves as "Palestinians" in Arabic. Instead of displaying your ignorance, read about the Treaty of San Remo

GGM| 9.13.12 @ 4:06AM

This comment is directed to Jack Hitler.

JP| 9.12.12 @ 10:32AM

So you endorse Dhimitude? BTW, for the last 40 years Christians and Jews living in Muslim lands have either been murdered (Pakistan, Lebanon, Egypt, and Niger) or driven out (Yeman, Iraq). Another thing, West Bank is under UN Control, not Isreali control. If the Palestinians live in sqaulor, blame the Palestinians and UN. BTW, Isreal provides all of the utilities to the West Bank and Gaza.

SCPOret| 9.12.12 @ 1:21PM

And you forget Spain where the jews and Christians were forced to convert or lose their lives. Later the Spainiards continued the practice in the inquistion as regards Jews

Jack in Wi| 9.12.12 @ 8:33PM

You got it wrong about Spain. When the Muslims conquered Spain their North African Jewish allies rode right beside them The Muslim rulers of Spain used their Jewish subjects as very usefull middle men and oversears of their Christian population. They squeezed the Christians very well for the Muslims and almost always lived better then the Christians.

The same was true in the Ukraine and Poland after the Polish kingdom welcomed the Jews into the country. Abba Eban in his " History of the Jews "tells how the Polish nobility loved having Jewish estate mangers. They pushed the peasents much harder then the Christian managers. They also were pretty rough loan sharks to the Polish and Ukrainian peasentry. Eban thought that all this contributed to the antisemitic residue in these areas.

Jews were not subject to the Inquisition and were expelled from Spain in 1492 along with the Muslims. There was little forced conversion. They were given th option to convert and stay or else take their property and leave. The numbers are in dispute but between 25 and 75% converted.

Jack: The terrorists attacking US people and property are not "innocents."

The question of whether we have too much presence overseas, whether militarily or diplomatically, is separate from whether we should adequately defend our people and our sovereignty once we are there.

Your comments about Netanyahu are reprehensible, again regardless of your (moronic) view of what our proper relationship with Israel should be.

William L. Gensert| 9.12.12 @ 9:35AM

Gary B| 9.12.12 @ 3:50PM

William, I'm not afraid of Obama. I'm afraid of all the people who are voting for him... again. I can only speculate they're voting against the Romney, since the left has done a brilliant job of positioning Republicans as money-grubbing murders. And, to vastly complicate matters, Republicans simply refuse to fight back. Enter the Tea Party...

Jack in Wi| 9.12.12 @ 9:51AM

Who said they were innocents? I said we don't shoot on crowds if we can help it. The Libyan forces were fighting with the gunman. Some Americans got killed in the crossfire. What are we supposed to do go to war with the Libyan government we just installed? Our whole policy in the Middle East has been a disaster for decades. we have no business there fighting nonsense wars for decades for no sane reason. We have made everything we touch worse. Lets leave and let them work it out for themselves.

DTOM| 9.12.12 @ 10:20AM

Jack, jack, jack....

Except that they are at war with us, Einstein.

What the hell where you doing on 9/11/2001? Waiting to board a plane with a box cutter?

That wasn't in the middle East. And it was eleven years to the day...they love to play with dates!

Are you really THAT stupid?

DTOM

Ross Kaminsky| 9.12.12 @ 10:32AM

Jack, a Libyan government official has said that he believes the Libyan security forces told the terrorists where to find the Ambassador. (See update in article.)

Jack in Wi| 9.12.12 @ 10:43AM

Fine Ross lets just leave. In Afganistan everyday some of our so called supporters turn their guns on us and shoot. Lets get the hell out of these places. We had no business being in most of them. They are just going to have to figure it out for themselves. Enough American blood and treasure has been spilt for nonsense. As much as a love being here with all my pals, I have work to do. Shalom.

Ross Kaminsky| 9.12.12 @ 11:10AM

OK, let's leave. But before we leave, do we allow our property to be invaded and our people to be terrorized and killed?

Jack London| 9.12.12 @ 11:40AM

Embassies aren't military bases - how do you propose we protect them?

Ross Kaminsky| 9.12.12 @ 12:21PM

Embassies are the sovereign territory of that nation. As for "not military bases", embassy protection has, almost for our entire history, been the job of the United States Marine Corps.

Jack London| 9.12.12 @ 12:58PM

Sure they are sovereign territory. But that's not much good in unstable countries when events move fast. How many marines should we have had in Libya just in case some idiot made a stupid video? You can see why we prefer to prop up dictators - at least they keep our diplomats safe.

Jack in Wi| 9.12.12 @ 3:40PM

We have closed embassies dozens of times in countries that have unstable conditions or because we don't like the government there. How is this any different? Just get the people out and forget about it. We should have probably been out of there long ago. We didn't have diplomatic relations with Libya for years. We haven't had diplomatic relations with places like Myumar, North Korea, Cuba, and other places for decades.

Jack London| 9.12.12 @ 4:20PM

Well Jack - you know full well why we are in Libya and not some of these other countries. Geopolitics and oil.

MK48| 9.12.12 @ 7:26PM

Ross...... where are they ? I herd that we are sending 50 Marines over there for protection.

A little late don't you think.......oh.... I wonder what the engagement policy is.

DTOM| 9.12.12 @ 1:53PM

Oh, Jack,

With stalwart US Marines with rational rules of engagement that permit defense in the form a single warning shot followed by fusillades of direct, deadly fire from protected locations strategically set through out the embassy.

That's how.

One defensive response like that and no where in the world will there be another attack on a US Embassy.

And if I were a US Ambassador, I would not set foot in country if that was not how my country was going to defend me and my staff.

I am not naive - sadly, Ambassador Stevens didn't require that. Pity the fool -- all that Peace Corps service didn't stand him well.

DTOM

Surly Curmudgen| 9.12.12 @ 3:27PM

From reading what Ambassador Stevens had to say upon being assigned to Libya, He suffered from a form of Stockholm syndrome. He very much identified with the people of North Africa to the detriment of the us. This is NOT to condone his murder but rather the action/inaction's of our State department.

Surly Curmudgen| 9.12.12 @ 3:29PM

I had that in upper case US as in United States

Ross Kaminsky| 9.12.12 @ 5:16PM

That was very curmudgeonly of you. It's true that the guy was a liberal, but that doesn't mean that his appreciation for people over there came at the detriment of the US. I think that's quite an unfair comment, particularly to make of a man who was just murdered.

By enforcing the rule of law with overwhelming military force, Jacks. Letting a country know that, say, Bengazi will be levelled if our embassy is touched, or that the Aswan Dam will be destroyed if our embassy is touched, concentrates the mind wonderfully.

Yes, we should remove our embassy from Libya---After we butcher a sufficient number of their civilians. And, of course, we should have supported Gadaffi and Mubarak. Play ball with us, we back you, mess with us, we kill you.

Geopolitics ain't beanbag.

Gary B| 9.12.12 @ 3:54PM

Ross, it's far too muddled to know, but I suspect the security forces gave up the Americans to save themselves from getting shot. Hillary's State Department is ultimately responsible. That their embassy was not well protected is obvious.

CJW| 9.12.12 @ 1:59PM

Why didn't the Marines guarding the embassy and consulate shoot? Probably ordered to not fire by the Obama/Hillary regime. Obama was too busy yesterday campaigning and working on his jokes for the idiot Letterman show.

Additionally, Occam, there is only one thing that Islamists understand - according to none other than Osama bin Ladin: Power.

I have mixed feelings about our activities all over the middle east. But if we are there, we should not have rules of engagement that require us to use hugs as our first line of defense and nerf bullets in extreme cases.

As old man Clanton, played by Walter Brennan, says so callously - but so rightly - in the John Ford classic "My Darling Clementine, "if you pull a gun, kill a man."

Warm and fuzzies and bending over backward to show Islamists that we're really nice little dhimmis won't sweep our problems under the rug. And apologizing to them every time they kill one of our people because they've said something mean about Islam isn't going to win over their hearts and minds.

This post encapsulates my thoughts on this matter.

The first question a Roman Consul would ask--were he transported forward roughly two millennia to our time, and briefed on the situation--would be simple:

"You tell me that you have weapons that can obliterate a city in an instant. You tell me that your enemies--who have been making war against you for decades--do not have these weapons.

"Why do you suffer any of them to live even one more day?"

from NRO online/Steyn 9/12/12

Jack in Wi| 9.12.12 @ 9:59AM

Of course they will leave us alone. They come over here because we are over there. The Vietnamese didn't come over here when we left Vietnam. The Algerians didn't keep coming into France when the French left. The Latin Americans didn't go into Spain when they left after a decade long wars of Independence. The Afganis didn't keep fighting the Russians and British after they left. The Indians and Pakistani's didn't keep fighting the Bristish after they left their countries. Enough is enough of the lies and BS

Jack,
Were we in Afghanistan when the Taliban supported Al Queada? Are Isreali soldiers now in Beirut? Are they in Egypt who is now putting tanks, helicopters and troops in the Sinai? Peace only comes through strength. There is no Utopia in this world. The only people who will protect Americans are Americans, whether that be abroad or at home.

What will the left say now that our Ambassador is dead and being dragged through the streets of Libya? How many more cheeks are you going to turn?

This is bound of happen when we have a POTUS who thinks he can make nice with these piles of crap. And why aren't there a bunch of dead Marines who were defending our Embassy? Something is very wrong in this picture.

DTOM| 9.12.12 @ 1:59PM

NCNancy -

I'm thinking that if there had been a proper deployment of Marines, today we would have a live Ambassador and a bunch of dead Islamic thugs.

Ambassador Stevens, you sir, died because of the sloppy work of your employer. Widow Stevens you have been robbed! I say you have grounds for recourse...

Obama has voiced his displeasure with our form of government and said china being a dictatorship is easier to govern. He has voiced contempt at our poorly written and unusable constitution. He has stated that in a conflict he will stand with the Muslims. He was unhappy that we were paying less than two dollars a gallon for gas. He is feeling better now that he has pushed that past four dollars a gallon. He really... really... really hates that we, this nation, is so productive and as a result wealthy and is working his hardest to make us unproductive and as poor as any other third world country. He has taken up the mantle of dictator. Isn't that so so special?

KyMouse| 9.12.12 @ 5:24PM

A couple of days ago, someone at HotAir posted a comment which noted that the Canadians were withdrawing their personnel from their Iranian embassy. The comment wondered what they knew that we didn't know.

Did anyone else see that, or a similar comment elsewhere? Indeed, the Canadians seemed to have read the signals correctly.

TLP| 9.12.12 @ 6:53AM

And, just like that, History repeats itself. And, not just once, but twice, and on the same day. TWO American Diplomatic Instillations were attacked yesterday, by the Religion of Peace. An Embassy and a Consulate.

Gee,that never happens.

Is ANYONE surprised? Especially now, in Jimmy Carter's 2nd Term, and just after Bill Clinton wowed then on Stage.

These creatures (whom I recommend be Flash Fried at the earliest opportunity) don't know much, but they can tell a WEAK HORSE when they see one.

They saw one in Carter, and our Embassy was Sacked, our CIA Chief was Murdered, and our People were held Hostage until a REAL MAN took over the White House. Carter's perfidy in his abandonment of the Shah, led to what the world is facing today, with Iran. (True Story)

Then the Left gave us Billy the Kid Clinton. The incurable Adolescent, with the Lying B*tch Wife, and the Hot Lounge Singer Mistress. Even though he had never Served in the Military, we were assured that he was prepared to be Commander in Chief because he once Protested AMERICA in MOSCOW, at the height of the Cold War. And, as Governor of The Barefoot State, he liked to use his State Police Detachment, to round up chicks, to look at his Di*k.

Von Mises Jr| 9.12.12 @ 8:55AM

Romney should immediately meet with Bibi. History does repeat itself, my friend TLP, or at least it rhymes.
The hostages were returned the day Ronald Reagan took office. The Islamist knew that the following morning that Tehran would look like the rest of the Kavir and Lut Desert that surround them.

The regime and MSM cannot control the narrative nationwide, no less worldwide. We have at least one dead and others missing that makes Jimma Carter look competent. At least the peanut farmer did not publically prostrate himself if my memory serves me right. It took a crashed helicopter in the desert before he descended to Barry's level. I think then he prostrated himself to the nation.

There is only one thing about the embassy attack in 1979 that brings a smile to my face --

At the time, I was staying with a deaf family in Indiana. The teenaged daughter was, like all of us, outraged by the attack. Knowing that I knew only a little sign language, she used pantomime to show me what she would like to do to the Iranians.

Her "recommendations" went on for about five minutes. I wish I had the whole thing on video -- she went from firing guns to throwing grenades and bombing, all in a fast and furious pantomime.

God bless her. I wish I could see her reaction to this latest attack.

His Groveling at their feet. His incessant Praise of their Peacefulness, even as they trapse across the other side of the world, Killing everyone they can get their hands on.

The Speeches. The Interviews he gives them. The Muslim Mitzvahs he has at the White House, seemingly, every other Saturday.

He has handed them Mubarek. Handed them Libya. He's done his best to put Israel in a Bad Situation since Day 1, with his insistence that they Stop Building Houses in their own Country, Go back to the 67 Borders, Stop calling Jerusalem their Capitol, and helping his Muslim Brotherhood Buddies encircle the Jewish State.

I've called him President GREEN LIGHT twice, because Green means Go. And, Go they will, if this MFer gets 4 More Years to Finish what he Started.

Yesterday was just the beginning.

One of the main reasons I come to this site is to read what you have posted today. You would be a hit at my local newspaper. The left so much hates the truth and attacks those who say it. I know as I'm often on the receiving end. The pond scum just hate to be called pond scum.

America is turning into a bunch of pussies. We need someone like Gen Pershing to handle these terrorists. I'm sure most people know how he dipped the bullets in pig's blood before executing all but one Islamic terrorist, sending the one back to tell the story to the rest of his buddies. I swear, we need some tough love here.

But that's not going to happen because the Dims depend on the Arabs to vote for them. The DNC also deleted their previous condemenation of Hamas in their wimpy platform. It must be difficult to base a platform on all your voting blocs rather than principles.

The Democrats HAVE NO principles. They only care about reelection at any cost. If they have to sacrifice a few Americans and the truth along the way, it's not a problem.

While Jack sounds like Neville Chamberlain...peace at any price...we need some peace through strength. Wonder if the Enola Gay is still around?

Bill8472| 9.12.12 @ 9:53AM

First, there's no corroboration for the claim that Moros (or any other Muslim) would have any greater concern about being executed because the bullets were to be dipped in pig's blood, or (as the legend generally goes) to be buried in the skin of a pig.

Furthermore, there's no evidence that I know of that verifies that General Pershing ever did what your post says he did (executed Moros with pig's-blood bullets/buried them in pigskins).

But I agree that civilian Americans are all too often are pussies. 'Twas ever thus. People who are willing to stand up to mistreatment are all too rare.

TLP| 9.12.12 @ 1:24PM

We'll never know, until we try, right?

I say we TRY.

I may be wrong, but I think that Black Jack Pershing used to Dip these MFers in Pig Blood, before Burying them, and then Buried them Face Down, so the Purp and Pelleas, and RCV, and Alancouldyoumakemineafootlongandputsomehaironitbrooks, could have a shot at them, when they FCKED WITH US, back in the day.

And the MFers backed down.

Turn it all to Glass.

We're gonna have to do it later, anyway.

Why not do it NOW, and spare Millions of Lives?

Bill8472| 9.12.12 @ 2:36PM

The Moros NEVER backed down. The U.S. war against the Moros simply ground down, with U.S. Army leaders trying diplomacy and having some success; things fell below the war level, and the Moros got along reasonably well with the U.S. occupiers until the Philippines became independent after World War II.

TLP| 9.12.12 @ 4:26PM

It" Ground Down" because they Backed Down.

rgz| 9.12.12 @ 10:49AM

I would have to agree that something needs to be done. Exactly what is a very difficult question. I think it is pretty safe to say that much of the population of the Middle East hates us and has for a long time. Rekligious wars tend to be very messy and bloody, and that seems to be what is under consideration here. Interesting that you bring up Neville Chamberlain. Have you thought about the outcome of almost every war since the end of WW II?

The hate speech I.e the video at the heart of this was meant to elicit a response. Its rather unfortunate that some have taken the bait. The motives of those at the centre of this should be looked at. Are they trying to force the US into further military responses in the ME. Are they friends of Priminister Netanyahu. We need to know.

Albert Constantine Jr.| 9.12.12 @ 7:55AM

Once again, the poor lawless powerless Islamist mobs have been manipulated by the clever Zionists to commit acts of aggression against sovereign US embassies and consulates (thus said John786). There is not a word against attacking the embassies of other countries, nary a criticism of attacking others to promote the religion of peace.

John, your motives, as demonstrated in this and all of your comments here from the comfort of your UK perch, are well known already.

John786| 9.12.12 @ 8:31AM

It seems clear to me that extremists feed off each other. In order to create chaos. These Violent episodes are meant to confuse and detract us. It is ironic that the US is now suffering from a lack of security it helped in part create. Necons have a lot to answer for. An invasion of Iran will not help matters.

c. j. acworth| 9.12.12 @ 8:46AM

Absolutly right, John. An invasion of Iran will not help. A whole buncha cruise missles on the other hand....

rgz| 9.12.12 @ 10:58AM

It seems to me that to profess any religion other than the dominant religion in the region where one happened to be pr0fessing has always invited some opposition and even contempt. It also seems to me that the "prophet" would probably be living out his life in prison for reasons that pretty much everyone agreed on if he lived in the West in the 21st century instead of 7th century Arabia.

DTOM| 9.12.12 @ 9:21AM

ACJ,

Your "poor, powerless Islamist" mobs are not being manipulated - they are doing what they believe in. And what they believe in is Islam, "the religion of peace." Which attains that peace through a very simple formula: everyone either follows Islam, is a dhimmi-a serf to the Islamic faithful, or is dead. Result: peace.

But it is noisy for a while.

And there is no doubt that they are seeing us as weak. The Obama-led response to the "Arab spring" was soft, lazy, and cowardly. Thus they now figure us as "soft, lazy, and cowardly." Sadly, until we convince them otherwise they will treat us and our representatives as unimportant serfs who can be manhandled and murdered at will.

I bet some of those big Obama donors with their new ambassadorships are wondering about what they got themselves into.

DTOM

Jacob McCandles| 9.12.12 @ 9:44AM

You pretend to be something you are demonstrably not.

Only the ignorant or the malignant propose retreat and appeasement in the face of acts of war. History has endlessly shown that when warlike lunatics are not responded to strongly, they escalate. And Islam has been growing since Mohammed kicked the whole warlike thing off in the 700's. And it will continue until we disabuse those people of the notion that they can win.

Becoming energy independent will radically alter their ability to mess with us, however. Why don't you support that and let the rest of us handle the foreign affairs beat?

And let's see now, your peaceful Muslims killed four people because of an insulting movie?

Peaceful?

Vtwin: I always make the same comments. For the same reasons. In WWII, it took horrifying bombing and invasion with rape/pillage, etc. to make the Germans say "uncle." The Japanese required all of that bombing and more---and then two Nukes, to avoid invasion.

The Islamic world is 8 times larger than those two countries combined, and has a stronger ideology, although a far weaker technology base. It will take a LOT of killing to bring them down. I do not pretend my enemy is civilized, but I do not underestimate their willingness to fight. When killing people, it is far better to give than receive.

Bengazi needs carpet bombing. Egypt needs the Aswan dam destroyed. Teheran needs to be directly threatened with annihilation. Pussyfooting gets us nowhere. We MUST make them into the falling camel.

When they surrender and threaten us no more, then I am perfectly willing to go back to thinking about the birds in my back yard and Blofeld- petting my cats with nothing on my mind. But right now I have to think like Blofeld as well as pet my cats, and my enemy is the Islamic world.

That is so true. Rabid dogs should be put down humanely. It is not their fault, just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

These Muzzie maggots should be made to suffer. Osama got off easy when the Navy Seal popped him through the eye and out his ear. They should have gut shot the bastard, and let him die slowly and painfully. Same with these maggots.

My apologies to rabid dogs everywhere.

Couple of thoughts:

With Carter this happened in Iran in the Third year of his Presidency - the ol' Islamic radicals must be slipping up - or it took them a while to recognize the little itty-bitty man we have as President is really not GW Bush.

Until we toss Obama out on Nov 6, they are going to run wild. Pity our people on the ground over there.

When Romney wins, Obama had better extend the same courtesy and access to the White House that Bush extended to him. But the itsy-bitsy, teenie-weenie President Obama won't. He'll be locked in his bedroom, sulking while Moochelle tries to figure out how to stop the sunrise on January 21st, 2013. Romney had better double up the Secret Service detail that sweeps Barry and his ilk out that morning. And don't forget to sweep the place for bugs, too. And I am NOT talking about bedbugs...

Don't Tread On Me!!!

Sheesh, are we surprised by this?

Also would the press please seek out Hillary's Chief of Staff, Mrs. Weiner, Huma Abedin, and ask her when her mom's organization, the Muslim Brotherhood is going to knock this off? Don't they know that Barack will have more flexibility after the election?

Sheesh ... A Mormon? Hell a good, solid Rastafarian would be preferable to this stickless, spineless, teeny-weeny crew in the White House!

The Democrats create this crap and then they crawl back to their rotting little bolt holes and let someone else try to clean up the mess. Then the Democrats have the gall to raise their heads out of their holes and criticize, "Oh, your doing wrong, we have to be nice Iranians so they'll like us."
How many of our sons and daughters must die because of the dirty rotten cowards in Washington D.C.?

This country gets more riled up about waterboarding than our soveriegnty being compromised. Most of them couldn't find Egypt or Saudia Arabia on a map if their very lives depended on it. But they know exactly the moment their "benefits" come in.

We are in big trouble and half the country is absolutely clueless. On one hand I can't wait for Nov to get here, and on the other I am terrified. I don't know which will be worse: Obama winning or losing. Some of his followers will absolutely go ape sh*t if he loses cause they know they might have to go to work for the first time in their worthless, meaninless life.

Arabs, Persian, Iraqis, Afgahnis, Saudis, and all the others I have not mentioned understand one thing and one thing only. They understand the power of military might, but not so much the might that scares them. It is the willingness to use it with unbridled anger.
Germany and Japan didn't stop fighting until they were practically wiped off the face of the earth. Then and only then did they concede defeat to give up they're ability and desire to wage war on others.

John786| 9.12.12 @ 8:45AM

Ken (the rapturing texan)
Don't worry about my salvation. Jesus ( pbuh) is my messiah, prophet, guide. And the bible indeed Is a light. Muslims accept all the messengers of GOD. Islam is the last manifestation of the oldest faith on earth: the worship of the one true GOD. Salvation lies in acting upon this. You should learn more about Jesus ( pbuh).

DTOM| 9.12.12 @ 9:31AM

John - the Muslims do NOT follow Jesus - they co-opt Him. And if you are following them in an effort to connect with Jesus Christ, you are in for a very rude awakening when you meet St. Peter face to face. To you it will be like bumping into Mr. T who will turn around, bitch-slap you and shout "Fool! You think 72 virgins is a GOOD thing?! To hell with you...."

Good luck with that 786. Christ put it quite simply: in John 14:6.

Praying for you, fool!

Don't Tread On Me!

John786| 9.12.12 @ 10:38AM

I'm not sure what you're getting at. I believe that Jesus (pbuh) is one of Gods's great messengers. Salvation lies in following what he preached: I can not be a Muslim if I don't believe in this. Its Americas one sided policy in the ME which is driving a very negative dynamic. The drone wars are killing dozens each month. They don't bring security. Smashing Iraq into the stoneage has not brought security. Violence begets violence: I think Jesus (pbuh) may have said that. US and Muslim interest lies in being closer together. The elephant in the room is Israel. The coming war with Iran will bring no security to anyone. Interestingly the mother of all extremist states aka the Magical Kingdom is Americas closest ally in the ME. Go figure.

DTOM| 9.12.12 @ 11:01AM

Your belief is nice and it's yours.

God doesn't share it though. You claim Jesus as your Messiah and a messenger. He cannot be both.

You pretend to be Christian. You are not, by your own words you prove this.

And your confusing religion with how international affairs makes clear that you draw no distinction between this world and the next. Ergo, you are a Muslim.

And you believe that it is okay to kill me, if I don't agree with you.

As a Christian, I love you. As an American, I want you to either go away and leave us alone, or, if you attack us, we will kill you.

Get it?

Look out, there's a Jew behind that tree! And he is holding the firing button for a nuclear weapon.

Good luck with that.

DTOM

John786| 9.12.12 @ 12:25PM

DTOM
You say "GOD doesnt share it". Have you spoken to GOD. Is there direct communication. Are you the messiah? As a Christian you want to love as an American you want to kill? Is there two people in your brain. Muslims are christ's (pbuh) greatest followes and heirs. Thats 100% kosher.

Al Adab| 9.12.12 @ 1:26PM

Our beliefs may shape our visions of proper policy, but it should be clear that the way in which this administration is handling these events is amatuerish at best. You need to finish the thought. It is not a religion, it is a political system. And a political system that attacks another political system, like oh, say free market capitalism, that is what is called "war."

And political systems that fail to properly respond to "acts of war" end up being losers and subjugated...until (in the last 100 years) the USA comes and bails them out.

Uh-oh, who's going to bail us out? China? Russia? India? It's us or the end...

Obama apologizes to Muslims (and blames others) for a video/film which is used by Muslims to justify the attack on an American embassy and the murder of an American Ambassador. In the same groveling pander, Obama states, "...as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions." However, Obama and Sebellius have no problem offending the Catholic Church and its belief, with their health-insurance requirement to pay for contraception and abortion. Would Obama apologize and admit his personal responsibility, if Catholics rioted and burned a few federal buildings? We know he wouldn't and we know the church wouldn't. But, why is it that this man and his hypocrisy continues to go unchallenged? I cannot believe were this anyone but a liberal/fascist/Democrat in the WH, that the story lines would be what they are. Unemployment, food-stamps, food prices, fuel prices, the overall deficit, no budget(s), and now this nonsense. Media ignores it or whitewashes it, as if it is not so bad? And let us not forget Joe Biden and his idiocy. I cannot imagine if Dan Quayle had said any of this stuff what the media would have done to him. Bias is one thing, but this is just pure unadulterated propaganda.

irish19| 9.12.12 @ 10:01AM

MelvinNC| 9.12.12 @ 8:44AM

What the hell do you mean, "Another war with the muslins." That is the whole damn problem we didn't declare war, because if we had, and had the balls to win it, we wouldn't be in this position now.
Has anyone talked to a grunt coming back from Afghanistan and had them tell you the rules of engagement? In nutshell, even though the grunts can see the Taliban burying IED's we cannot shoot them, until they shoot back. The Marines I have talked to say, "The Taliban knows where watching and and they point back at our postilions and laugh their azzes off."
"Another war with the Muslims, give me a break." Because of the political cowards in Washington D.C. this Country doesn't have the balls to finish this what ever that we are involved in. This is the problem when either side isn't truthful in just what the hell is going on.

Both embassy attacks, as you rightly note, are actsd of war. This is all too similar to the situation faced and mishandled by Carter. Romney should understand and act accordingly. Libya and apparently Egypt as well have moved to protect each respective embassy. We could also use the 101 and 82 on site in this situation. Both locations are readily accessible from offshore support ships and open to air drops. Both governments, given their action currently would likely permit (although we could act without) such a defensive action from the US.

OccamT, here's a tiny cultural and religious note -- on a trip to England and France in 1978, I purchased as souvenirs small medallions of Thomas Becket (in Canterbury Cathedral) and Joan of Arc (in Notre Dame de Paris). Both medallions were clearly displayed by the boxful in the cathedral book shops.

Three decades later, I visited both cathedrals, and the little medallions were nowhere to be found. When I asked for them, the (very young) clerks looked at me as if I were from outer space.

Just seemed interesting to me.

My sister got her MBA from the University of Odense, Hans Christian Anderson's birthplace. Very safe to be Jewish when she went to school there. By 2009 it was no longer safe to be a Jewish schoolchild there. (Google Jews and Odense)

And anyone NOT recognizing acts of war invites more of the same - especially with the Islamic crew. Remember, over the last thirty some years, every time they probed us with an attack and we did not respond, they elevated their level of attack.

YESTERDAY WAS THE ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11.

If you want peace, prepare for war!

DTOM

Stkman| 9.12.12 @ 10:40AM

VTWIN,
I think the Muslims called for war, we would only be defending our sovereignty. Is that too much for you to understand? Bush told us this war would last beyond our lives. Do you not understand what he was saying? He knew it was a war of religion and culture, why can't you figure that out?

The Big E| 9.12.12 @ 10:48AM

vtwin,

Ross doesn't need to call for "another war with Muslims" because there's been one going on for a couple of decades now.

Here's a clue - if your enemy is a war with you - YOU ARE AT WAR - whether you want to be or not.

2/26/1993 - World Trade Center bombed - 6 dead, over 1000 wounded.

6/25/1993 - Khobar Towers bombed - 19 US Servicemen and 1 Saudi dead, 372 wounded.

8/7/1998 - American Embassies in Tanzania and Kenya bombed - 223 dead, over 4,000 wounded.

10/12/2000 - USS Cole attacked - 17 US sailors dead, 39 wounded.

9/11/2001 - I sure even YOU remember that one.

6/14/2002 - US Consulate in Karachi bombed - 14 dead, 51 wounded.

3/6/2006 - Marriott Hotel in Karachi bombed - 4 dead, 30 wounded.

5/12/2003 - compounds frequented by westerners in Riyadh bombed - 35 dead, 160 wounded.

How many more have to die before you recognize that WE ARE ALREADY AT WAR - WHETHER WE WANT TO BE OR NOT

Occam's Tool| 9.12.12 @ 11:45AM

By the way, vtwin, I don't believe in a ground war, boots on the ground response, as I don't care about collateral damage. Lessons must be learned on skin. Blood of civilians may flow.

When Caesar was kidnapped by pirates, he smilingly told them that he was going to crucify them when possible. It was later possible, and he did. For what the Egyptians alloweed, the Aswan dam must be destroyed. Lessons must be learned on skin.

As Katy Perry would say: "I'm Wide Awake." Even my parents are waking up.

Albert Constantine Jr.| 9.12.12 @ 8:28AM

The initial response from the Embassy in Egypt actually reflects the fundamental difference in the view of the Obama administration on the relationship between the people of the US and its government. These Islamist mobs and attendees of the recent Democratic convention share the belief that the American people belong to the government, therefore, if an offensive film is produced, it is the responsibility of that government, and therefore it’s institution may (and must) be attacked in response. In such a warped view, Obama’s Roanake announcement that you didn’t do that on your own makes him also responsible as an executive producer, and therefore a worthy target.

When considered in this light, his endless apologies for the US (even when we are attacked) take on context. Considering that Obama has taken responsibility for little except the successful military/intelligence raid killing Bin Laden and the GM bail out, it might be philosophically consistent for him to credit himself for getting an ambassador and consular staff killed.

Fck him.

And, FCK HER.

And, Fck You, if you don't like it.

Albert Constantine Jr.| 9.12.12 @ 2:51PM

Easy, Tim. I would have thought after my defense of you from the assaults of the other day, I would merit you reading my post entirely, and understanding that I suggest Obama’s chickens are coming home to roost. Perhaps my point was unclear. I am suggesting that Obama and the Islamists mobs share the same viewpoint, that the government controls and is responsible for the actions of the American people. That is why they attack our embassy when an American or a group in America create a film they find objectionable, and that is why he apologizes for his country.

To be more clear, I would have been issued a statement from the embassy is I were ambassador, Secretary of State, or POTUS:

The United States of America is a constitutional republic that has enshrined in its constitutional a right which forbids the government from interfering in the exercise of religion and free speech. That includes the ability to offend those who religion differs from our own. If you don’t like it, don’t go there. If you attempt to interfere with it, our citizens or our sovereign territory, we will introduce other parts of our Constitution in a series of seminars, including : Declarations of War/Authorization of Force; Letters of Marque/ Reprisal; and How our Second Amendment Helps to Guarantee our First, concluding with the Commandant of the Marine Corps explaining how “to the Shores of Tripoli” was included in “The Marines Hymn”.

I hope that clears it up.

Two of the dead were US Marines, and I'll bet dollars to doughnuts their "rules of engagement" precluded loaded weapons. Sadly, Marines Corps embassy guards have evolved into tokens, with local nationals pulling actual guard duty.

The first raghead over the wall should have been blown away, but Hillary wouldn't like that. And the illegal alien in the White House would have said the Marines acted stupidly.

And the ragheads know that for a fact.

Your comment brings to light an interesting point. If this administration cares little about the sovereignty of our actual borders, how would we expect it to care about sovereign territory within embassy walls. I suppose we should be grateful that consular staff wasn’t in the courtyard to greet the rioters who breached the wall with green cards, voter registration for Dearborn, in-state tuition rates to Michigan State and a map to Terry Jones’ home in Florida.

Some (all?) of the nice folks in our state department and department of justice(?) are simply asking that we give our treasure (it ain't nothing but the loot we stole over the past 100 years, right?) to the poor folks of the world and the downtrodden in the USA.

Shucks, just look at those poor teachers in Chicago having to go on strike for a measly 16% pay increase.

Cities declaring bankruptcy, federal government $16 trillion ++ in current debt. Soviet style health care (it is free, you know).

"Shucks, just look at those poor teachers in Chicago having to go on strike for a measly 16% pay increase."

In a comment very tangential to everything else on the thread, my understanding is that both sides have agreed over the pay increase. The strike is due to disagreement on the evaluation system. The teachers are abandoning their posts because they claim Rahmbo is bullying them on how they'll be rated.

Last time I checked, 91% of the women in Egypt STILL had no clitoris, after Muslim men sliced them off.

Just so, members of that totalitarianism, masquerading as a religion named Islam, have almost no free will, after previously brainwashed Moslems sliced their minds away. Convert, or die!

Would you like to visit Egypt’s pyramids and other places of antiquity? I understand the land area called Libya also has many outstanding ruins. How about tripping about there?

How do you handle a screaming two-year-old? Isolate them-- by all means get them away from the valuable china!

The softies like Barrack-Hillary et al, even as they can’t help but realize what a problem a nuclear Iran would be, and so rely on sanctions, are on to something profound.

Iran having nuclear weapons would be terrible. Humans having Islam as a religion IS worse!

Relationships, for individuals as well as nations, like most everything else, have risks AND rewards. It’s getting close to the time to seriously re-weigh these, when it comes to Islamic countries.

It sure seems to me that there is hardly ANY reward in “touching” Egypt, say, in any way, shape or form, and there is mostly deadly risk.

"Large mobs" attacked U.S. embassies in Libya and Egypt, protesting a YouTube film that mocked Muhammed?

Where were all those MODERATE Muslims while the mobs were killing several U.S. diplomats?

Did any Muslim moderate point out that it's a bit incongruous for mobs to attack U.S. diplomatic facilities and kill U.S. diplomats over a film that was not made by the U.S. government and shown on any U.S. government forum?

I don't suppose anyone has yet made the connection that the day of the Muslims mobbing U.S. government facilities and killing U.S. functionaries happened to be September 11, have they? I think this was 9/11 Muslim Memorial Day for them.

The "moderates" in this country have been coming up with excuse after excuse for the past 11 years or more why the U.S. should not take strong and violent steps to deal with the never-ending Muslim attacks on American interests. In my opinion, they have been quite vocal.

Unlike the so-called Muslim moderates. Right now, we're living through Muslims attacking U.S. diplomats. Today. When do you think some Muslim moderate spokesman will step forward to point out that the U.S. government and its diplomats had nothing to do with the alleged cause of the mobbings? When will that happen?

Suppose my guess turns out to be correct, that the mobbing really is caused by some sort of Muslim desire to act out on 9/11. When do you think we will hear or see a Muslim moderate spokesman talk about that?

I bet you we'll NEVER see or hear that at all.

Clinton's weakness in dealing with Islamic Jihadist attacks throughout his administration led to 9-11. Obama's incompetence will lead to war in the Middle East. When will the American voters learn not to elect these Democrats? Just a reminder: On January 20, 1981, minutes after Carter's term in office ended, the 52 U.S. captives held at the U.S. embassy in Iran were released, ending the 444-day Iran hostage crisis. Twitter is a bad place for diplomatic statements, and US personnel and missions should not use it.

We need a cogent and effective way to call out radical stupidity among some Muslims. Recent events remind us that uneducated (or madrasa educated) Muslims gladly take to the streets to protest the smallest conceivable slights to Muhammad, the Qur'an, or Islam. They exile Christian families accused (wrongly) of desecrating the Qur'an. They manage to get Muslims killed because some Florida nut-case pastor wants to burn the Qur'an.

Muslims should recognize that if Muhammad is who they say he is, then he is far beyond the ability of the devils in the West do denigrate. They should chill out.

But the attack in Benghazi was likely an attempt to wound the United States on 9/11 orchestrated by supporters of Muammar Ghadaffi. Much more like premeditated murder.

Boar Hunter| 9.12.12 @ 11:30AM

"Some" muslims?

Public Defendet| 9.12.12 @ 11:16AM

IMHO, Iran is behind this. Storming the embassay, is one of those Iranian ploys. Being on September 11, the attacks were not spontaneous. The attacks also appear to be designed to deflect attention away from Iran's nuclear weapons development.

Public Defender| 9.12.12 @ 11:54AM

Ross, this was an excellent article. Since our embassy was vacant in Cairo, I suspect our people knew about that one, but not the Libya attack. Comparisons between this event and others that Iran has orchestrated are too similar. Iran likes to use proxies to do their work and to distract international attention. As when Iran had Hezbollah attack Israel in 2006, because pressure was mounting over Iran's weapons program. This is no different.

Mimi | 9.12.12 @ 11:17AM

America is OUTRAGED...On 9/11 was the kicker!
The Pres. better get busy....The deliberate attack in LIBIA with loss of life...The massacre of the AMERICAN FLAG...calls for more response than blame for the U.S.A....This has .....ALL of AMERICA...angered beyond anything I've seen !

Mistral| 9.12.12 @ 11:41AM

This is what happens when misdirected western nations help causes they do not understand. The so-called "arab-spring" has nothing to do with a popular insurrectionist movement for "democracy" and what Americans think is "freedom". What has America learned form history? A very resounding nothing! Iraq is an expensive mess; Afghanistan an expensive failure. Your enemies enemy is not necessarily your friend. Al-Q is benefiting from all the US aid sent to Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria etc., etc. Of course, anyone with a little common sense would have known this was going to happen. Why? because it has happened before. How can a govt be so dumb?

Mistral| 9.12.12 @ 11:45AM

You see, Ghaddafi, Assad, Saddam Hussein etc., all had their uses until someone in an office in USA & EU with a misplaced tortured sense of liberal humanistic guilt decided it was time to change things. Now the Pandora's Box has been opened yet again by people who learn absolutely nothing from the past.

Boar Hunter| 9.12.12 @ 11:59AM

I am so happy things are not like they were when evil Bush Hitler was in office. Now that Obama is in charge, so much has been done to change our status on the world stage.

Has Obama's position of Muslim outreach and deferential treatment not truly ensured our favored status in their hearts and minds?

If buying the hearts and minds of these sub-humans were possible, "Black Jesus" would have seen it was done.

But what has all his bowing and apologizing to Islam brought him? What has he received in exchange for turning NASA into National Muslim Outreach? What has he received for all his praise of their beautiful, peaceful religion? What has he bought all of his extravagant parties in the White House and the billions sent to these sub-human primitives?

It looks to me like the only thing he paid for was Romney's election as president.

Occam's Tool| 9.12.12 @ 12:06PM

Barack's lead among Jews has plunged 19%. And the Republicans will be voting for Romney, whereas the Dhimmis may not vote.

KennesawJack| 9.12.12 @ 1:20PM

Occam, no offense intended, but I'll believe the Jewish vote when I see it. It needs to swing away from the Dems but it never seems to, at least to any large degree. However, this snub of Netanyahu may be the catalyst to finally get some of them to come to their senses. Although, I gotta tell you. One of my best friends (also my attorney - yeah, I know. Who has attorneys for friends?) still thinks Obamarx hung the moon. I just don't get it.

KennesawJack| 9.12.12 @ 1:24PM

And since I brought up the snub of Netanyahu, anyone wanna bet Obamarx doesn't meet with Morsi in New York?

TLP| 9.12.12 @ 6:51PM

Meet with him?

He'll probably FEEL HIM UP in the Cab.

How's that, Ross?

Occam's Tool| 9.12.12 @ 8:01PM

KJ: I WON'T take that bet.

And, knowing this will surprise people, I think Tom Kratman hung the moon, and he not only is a Lt. Colonel (ret) who led a battalion, he, too, is an attorney. But he hates the law.

Let's wait and see on the Jewish vote. You may be right. However, I predict the lowest Jewish vote turnout in many years. They may not vote against Obama, but they may not show up, period.

Trinacria| 9.12.12 @ 12:18PM

Ross,
There was a time not too long ago when I would have agreed with 100% of what you said in the column. I would have reacted to the fact that there was no defense of US soverign soil nor any hint of retaliation with shock and outrage. Regrettably, I have over the last 3+ years come to accept the lamentable fact that there's nothing left worth defending. When a nation so shamefully abandons its responsibility to choose it's leaders with due regard to the likely consequences of their choices (can anyone really claim to be surprised by any of the monumental and catastrophic failures of this weak and feckless administration?), it has in effect issued its surrender and declared itself no longer worthy of defending.

spike59| 9.12.12 @ 12:45PM

Ross Kaminsky| 9.12.12 @ 12:49PM

MelvinNC| 9.12.12 @ 1:13PM

They were not killed Ross, they were murdered by Iranian Al Quds. That is why the Ambassador was suffocated, it leaves no evidence trail.

Kingofthenet| 9.12.12 @ 12:23PM

Just for the record the Florida Pastor only has tangential involvement in the film, it was produced and bankrolled by California Jews, and the reason the clip has spurred outrage NOW instead of when it was made, was the trailer was in English, but someone just recently dubbed it in Arabic.

Ross Kaminsky| 9.12.12 @ 12:50PM

I did not mention the Florida pastor, and the dubbing is a convenient excuse that I don't believe is a significant factor.

Drunken Sailor| 9.12.12 @ 2:36PM

As one caller to Rush stated. They could have just as easily been offended about Obama bragging about killing Osama. The film was just a excuse. This has been planned for some time.

Kingofthenet| 9.12.12 @ 3:29PM

This may be true, anyway we really need to beef up security at these Embassies.

Drunken Sailor| 9.12.12 @ 4:23PM

One of the few times I agree with you.

Occam's Tool| 9.12.12 @ 8:07PM

I disagree. We need to destroy a few Islamic cities, let them know there's more where that came from, and LOWER security at the Embassies. Let them know the consequences ON THEIR SKINS. Enough of being on the Defense. The Best D-fense is a Good O-Fense. if they know that killing a few of our Embassy people will bring a rain of hell on, say, the Aswan Dam, Mecca, Riyadh, Teheran, etc. They will stop. Personally, I think three strikes: one and two, carpet bomb Teheran and Bengazi (or Nuke) and three, OBLITERATE the Aswan Dam, will do for starters.

The damage should be horribly asymetrical. We can do this easily. All we lack is the will. And now is the perfect time to do it, preferably while Morsi's plane is in the air.

What Would Alexander Magnus Do?

DTOM| 9.12.12 @ 2:37PM

We will leave them alone if they stop it. But they won't. They kidnapped our people in 1800 and they have attacked repeatedly ever since.

Answer this question, do you really think the US would have gone into Iraq and Afghanistan if 3,000 INNOCENT Americans, going about their own business, in their own country, doing nothing to bother Islam were not murdered by Islamicists in 2001?

Do you really think they should have been murdered? If you do, then you are the enemy. There is no excuse for launching surprise attacks targeting innocent, unarmed, non-combatants. None.

That's cowardly because Islamicists are COWARDS. Girlie little cowards who don't dare take on a fair fight. COWARDS!

Why was the Ambassador suffocated? It leaves no marks. Where is all the cell phone pictures that Libyans like to take and upload to facebook and utube hmm.

We have to see this for what it is. This is the beginning of a general war to establish the callifate, and for who will be running it. The so called Arab Spring was started by the Muslim Brotherhood to clear the decks of the weak rulers. The Brotherhood is now in a position to start a general war to take over everything from the Balkans to the Atlantic coast of Africa. They have just shown how powerful they are in their sphere of influence. They took on the Superpower in their midst, and won. They struck a blow for all of Islam.
The next move will be to overthrow the kingdoms, and any dictatorship still standing. Any nascient democracy is toast. They know that the U.S. will not intervene. After all, the U.S. didn't even defend its own embassies. They have all of the weapons that had been supplied during the Spring. They will nott be fighting the West, but only the non-Brotherhood regimes. Once in power, they have all the oil wealth with which to further their conquests. This will not be pretty. Europe had better by paying attention.

How are the grieving wives supposed to accept this? How do they tell their children that their fathers were murdered like cowering scared dogs in the corner of that building, because they were under orders from the world's smartest woman Hillary Clinton who just happens to be the SoS not to return fire and take as many as those Islamic Sons of Bitches with them until they're ammunition was exhausted.

Once you say that anything other than calling for violence or causing likely and imminent harm (due to the rational actions of rational people, such as the "yelling fire in a crowded theater" exception) is "abuse", you open the door to tyranny.

Albert Constantine Jr.| 9.12.12 @ 5:36PM

"such as the "yelling fire in a crowded theater" exception"

Mr. Kaminsky, I feel obliged each time I see the usage of the above phrase to point out that shouting fire in a crowded theater is not prohibited (it is in fact encouraged in some circumstances, such as an actual fire). It is the false shout of fire which is proscribed.

A statement released on the behalf of the 80 cast and crew members of "Innocence of Muslims," a film that reportedly prompted Tuesday protests at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, indicates that they are not happy with the film and were misled by the producer.

"The entire cast and crew are extremely upset and feel taken advantage of by the producer. We are 100% not behind this film and were grossly misled about its intent and purpose," the statement says. "We are shocked by the drastic re-writes of the script and lies that were told to all involved. We are deeply saddened by the tragedies that have occurred."

If you LISTEN to the film, it sounds like they dubbed in the words 'Mohammad' and a lot of the controversial dialog, AFTER it was made unbeknown to the actors.

Jack London| 9.12.12 @ 4:46PM

Kaminsky says being offensive isn't abusing free speech. That sounds as though he thinks that the right of free speech doesn't come with any responsibilities or consequences. Clearly, in today's world, there are things said at home that put American lives in danger abroad.

spike59| 9.12.12 @ 4:52PM

funny how that sentiment fades whenever someone like Kerry or Carter or Clinton or Gore or Pelosi or Reid decide to flap their gums, like they did during the entirety of Dubya's 2 terms...back then it was called 'patriotism'....

Ross Kaminsky| 9.12.12 @ 5:31PM

Jack, you don't have a right not to be offended. The times when free speech comes with responsibilities or consequences are VERY limited, as they should be. You would think that a liberal like you would be much stronger on this issue.

Jack London| 9.12.12 @ 6:04PM

Ross - you dodged the point. Do you think attacking the Islamic religion at this particular time carries no responsibility and poses no dangers to Americans?

Thom| 9.12.12 @ 6:25PM

You think people in foreign countries have a right to decide what our laws are?

What you call a religion has an 800 year history of violence within and without. Any excuse has always been good enough going back as far as there are records on Islam.

Gary B| 9.12.12 @ 8:24PM

Throttling back on free speech is appeasement. When the hell has that ever worked? I think it's high time we Americans start getting offended, especially American conservatives. I'm offended when that Muslim horse's ass in the White House makes fun of rural citizens "clinging to their guns and bibles." I'm offended at the mere sight of that traitor. And, quite frankly, I think it's the responsibility of free people everywhere to attack a so-called religion that terrorizes and tortures women for the fun of it. What kind of man tortures and kills his own daughter in the name of religion? Making fun of those reptiles should be a new reality TV show. I wish I could get them all on the same bus.

spike59| 9.13.12 @ 6:18AM

care to point out a 'particular time' when these nutjobs WEREN'T prone to mindless violence whenever their widdle feewings were hurt?

JD| 9.12.12 @ 7:37PM

Pitiful, Jack. Your side is the first to claim "free speech" defenses for the horribly offensive things you say to Christians. You're two-faced on the issue.

Occam's Tool| 9.12.12 @ 8:16PM

Only because wimps like you, Mr. London, refuse to properly defend free speech.

If a Muslim wishes to scream obscenities against the US, that is his right of free speech. If he is moved to violent action, then our government should respond the way Julius Caesar did to the pirates who kidnapped him: crucify him. (Reading Suetonius is a good way to spend one's time in college)

Destroying one's enemy asymmetrically is a great way to get them to stop attacking you. How many Japanese Kamikaze attacks have we had to deal with since August 1945?

But if you sit around and think your farts smell like roses while wondering why vermin hate you, you're not going to get very far.

Occam's Tool| 9.14.12 @ 6:46PM

Actually, Jack, with VERY few exceptions, none of which you have named, the right of free political speech is pretty damn absolute. Giving away military secrets is an exception that I can think of (shouting "fire" is not political free speech).

But NOTHING discussed here on this string, and nothing those filmmakers did, would fall under ANYTHING but 100% protected political free speech.

SCREW THEIR SENSIBILITIES. If my dear friend Nick has to put up with a "Piss Christ," then Muslims need to put up with denigrations of Mohammed. If they can't without violence, then they need to be spanked. If they are spanked hard enough, then no Americans will be put at risk.

They are willing to put up a tremendous assault for the least of their principles. You are so desirous of avoiding violence that you will not lift a finger to support the MOST important of yours. Don't you see a problem with that? I do.

The right to be abusive is one that the Muslims freely grant themselves, incidentally. Well, I despise their prophet and the flea bitten syphilitic camel he rode in on. I am trying to be as abusive as I can without using foul language---and what I just said is COMPLETELY protected speech.

Jack London| 9.12.12 @ 4:49PM

And I would like to know what he would do in a foreign consulate facing a a mob. Would he tweet something like 'the filmmaker had every right to offend the prophet'?

spike59| 9.12.12 @ 4:53PM

tweet? why waste valuable shooting time with tweeting?

Ross Kaminsky| 9.12.12 @ 5:32PM

Because the president has taken your bullets away?

Jack London| 9.12.12 @ 6:06PM

That's the kind of facile response we expect from you. What would you have done in Cairo as it was clear the mood was changing?

Ross Kaminsky| 9.12.12 @ 6:57PM

"Jack", I'm not sure I understand your question. If you mean at the embassy, I would have put marines with scary-looking rifles in front of the building and then done what I already said in the article. Shoot the first person to touch our flag, but just to injure, and shoot the second one to kill. My one caveat is that the embassy needs to have enough people with enough firepower to defend the situation if the crowd goes crazy. It doesn't take too many Marines to stop a mostly unarmed crowd. If the "protesters" are armed, then it's already an attack, not a protest, and of course all the armed "protesters" should be decapitated with high-speed lead (although a center-of-mass shot might make more sense, once the drama of exploding heads is not working to subdue the crowd.)

How's that?

Nick| 9.12.12 @ 7:35PM

There is no shoot to injure, Mr. Kaminsky.
That is Hollywood clap-trap.

You either shoot to kill, or you don't shoot. Period.

Ross.......you did it I think you broke the post meter (387) posts.

Gary B| 9.12.12 @ 8:30PM

Yes, shooting to wound is unrealistic. That is Hollywood clap-trap. Water canons would work as a first response. Then, follow up with flame throwers. That would be a first class education. And, since when do the Marines have to take responsibility for what a dumb ass filmmaker does?

Occam's Tool| 9.14.12 @ 6:56PM

Nick, let me just take a moment to tell you what a wonderful exemplar you are of Roman Catholic proselytizing: kind in your views, loyal to your friends, decent all around. G-d Bless and have a great weekend.

Life is very short. Unless one has to, one should be as kind as possible, (In the situation overseas, one has no choice but to be brutal, as sheepdogs are brutal to wolves.) and one should tell great people how wonderful they are.

Same to you, TLP, and you, Boar, and you, Spike, and you, Albert, and you, MK, and you, Stan, and you, KJ, and you, Russ.

I probably forgot some (not you, Mistral, or you, Cheesehead, or you, 786). This Blog allows for some relaxation of anger and some intellectual amusement, in terrible times. This weekend I'm going to work on training my girl cat to come to me when I call more reliably. I'm also going to watch "Abraxas," which is a dreadful film with the loudest mouthed SEAL and Novelty governor of all time playing a moronic role, while the MST3K guys take him down.

Occam's Tool| 9.12.12 @ 8:25PM

Ross: soldiers are trained to hit the center of mass. When the adrenaline flows, there is no shoot to injure. Unlike you, I have worked in maximum security prison settings.

Shoot to kill, anyway. I am tired of being nicey-nicey.

Occam's Tool| 9.14.12 @ 6:48PM

if so, your people 'over there' are truly in over their heads...let me put it to you this way: when i served overseas, our 'issued weapons' were locked in the arms room, and we had to wait for the armorer to get cleared for access, and then issue the weapons; however, i didn't know a single individual who didn't have their own firearm, loaded and ready for use 24/7...when you're in hostile territory, you have to be a bit more resourcerful

What would you do facing a mob Jack? Doesn't matter why or where. What?

Occam's Tool| 9.12.12 @ 8:22PM

Yup. I would do precisely that tweet, only I would add that the rioters better back off if they want to keep the Nile useful. And then, if they continued, I would have my government respond as Putin has done to Chechnya, except that Putin was a puss-puss to them compared to what I would do. 1 megaton groundburst, which is what Carter should have done to Teheran. If he had done that, we would have lost a few hundred casualties in the embassy; 9/11 would never have happened, nor the 1st or 2nd Gulf wars.

I believe in the Max Bialystok approach: "If you've got it, flaunt it." The correct response to the Egyptian embassy assault was to take out the Aswan dam. Preferrably while Morsi was flying to New York. Then greet his plane with US fighters and force him down, preferrably by blasting the afterburners into the cockpit window, if necessary.

These people understand NOTHING else.

I see an opportunity to save billions on unneeded security at US embassies and minor diplomatic posts. I would recommend we appoint "Jack of Wi" as our official "sacrificial goat" to Egypt asap so he can see up close and personal what his hatred of "jews" looks like when it is directed at him simply because he was born in America. Libya also needs a new ambassador I hear .... Jack Ass?

Thom| 9.12.12 @ 5:43PM

For all of my 42+ years as an adult Conservatives have advanced over the ruins of Democrat policies not due to their philosophically arguments. In each case the cumulative damage done from these polices have persisted despite the best of efforts because the institutionalized structure of these wrongheaded polices have been left in place throughout government at every level. Being a better manager of our decline and eventual failure doesn't change the ultimate end result. I'm relatively certain a "conservative" will be in charge when we finally fall off the cliff.. .. There is a point where no President or Congress can fix "this".

Unfortunately, we now have a long history of both diplomatic and military failures since WWII. Our words mean nothing to the tin plate dictators of the world and allies alike. We've become that barking dog that always runs to the limits of his yard but no further. We don't have the capacity to back what capabilities we have to finish the jobs we take on. We've become weak and predictable to a fault and anyone can do the "math" on our military capabilities. Half the adult population pays for what the other half benefits from free of obligation and we let those people vote. When the "fall" arrives it will be US citizens climbing over the fences of other US citizens to take what they have because the enemy is truly within America now. The events we see in the ME are just a harbinger of what is to come ....

Jack in Wi would make a GREAT Libyan ambassador; sorry, ambassador to Libya.

Funny...

All this fuss about an internet clip that simply tells the truth about mohammed. Everybody already knew that he was a child molester, had sex with animals, specially PIGS and was also a cross dressing faggot.

I've never seen this many posts on a single article on AS before. This day has been one hell of a day for news. A weak president, a presidential opponent and a useless Sec. of State.

Albert Constantine Jr.| 9.12.12 @ 9:58PM

I've seen it go over 600 once or twice during the primary, but this is as high as I've seen it go since registration began a few months back.

Were there Marine guards at Benghazi? If not, why not? If there were guards posted, were they given orders not to shoot? If so, why and by whom?

St Reformed| 9.13.12 @ 11:37PM

Earlier today, Ben Stein submitted a great column assailing our "one-party media" who act as agents of Obama's "Ministry of Truth." These quislings are as dangerous as the Islamofascists since they were quite skillful at installing our Con Artist-in-Chief in the WH and are on the road to keeping him there. God deliver us.
