When good deeds don’t pay.
On Wednesday one of Israel’s largest dailies had a scoop: four months ago a man from Gaza received urgent medical treatment at Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, Israel. He had had a serious cardiac episode that no hospital in Gaza was able to treat.
Not such a scoop, one might think? The man was the husband of Suhila Abd el-Salam Ahmed Haniyeh — sister of Ismail Haniyeh, political leader of Hamas in Gaza and an ideological enemy of Israel, to put it mildly.
Haniyeh’s movement, Hamas, says in its charter that “Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it”; and quotes the famous hadith: “The Day of Judgment will not come about until Muslims fight Jews and kill them. Then, the Jews will hide behind rocks and trees, and the rocks and trees will cry out: ‘O Muslim, there is a Jew hiding behind me, come and kill him.’”
And Hamas regularly acts in the spirit of such statements, having killed and injured thousands of Israelis in suicide bombings, rocket firings, and other terror. As for Ismail Haniyeh, you can see him here at Hamas’s 24th anniversary rally in Gaza last December 14, bellowing decidedly unfriendly things about Israel such as:
the armed resistance and the armed struggle are the path and the strategic choice for liberating the Palestinian land, from the [Mediterranean] sea to the [Jordan] river, and for the expulsion of the [Israeli] invaders and usurpers from the blessed land of Palestine. The Hamas movement will lead Intifada after Intifada until we liberate Palestine — all of Palestine, Allah willing…. We won’t relinquish one inch of the land of Palestine.
Words that don’t leave much room for a “two-state solution” or any sort of peaceful rapprochement. Most recently Haniyeh has blamed Israel for Sunday night’s terror attack at the Israeli-Egyptian border, in which global-jihad terrorists killed 16 Egyptian border guards, commandeered their armored vehicle, and would have rammed it into an Israeli community if not stopped in time by the Israeli army and air force. Egypt, rather than pinning this exploit on Israel, has been retaliating against comrades of the actual culprits.
It was this background, then, that made the lifesaving treatment of Haniyeh’s brother-in-law by an Israeli hospital noteworthy — not the fact that the brother-in-law is a Palestinian. In 2010 over 100,000 Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza were treated in Israeli hospitals, over 100 Palestinian doctors interned at them, and five organ donations were performed.
In one notorious case, a Palestinian woman patient from Gaza didn’t show much appreciation for her treatment. In 2005 Wafa al-Biri was treated at Soroka Hospital in Beersheva for burns sustained over 45 percent of her body in a gas-cooker accident. Her family wrote a thank-you note to the hospital on her behalf. Two months later Al-Biri, on the way to Soroka for follow-up tests, was detained at a checkpoint; hidden in her clothing was a 20-pound bomb with which, she said, she had hoped to kill 30 to 50 Jews once inside the hospital.
Though admittedly an extreme case, it would be nice to think this large number of Palestinians’ benefiting from Israeli medicine would have a conciliatory effect. In the case of Haniyeh’s brother-in-law, the above-linked report says that, after his cardiac episode,
the couple filed an urgent entry request with Israeli authorities, a Palestinian ambulance transported the husband to the Erez Crossing, [and] he was moved to [an Israeli ambulance] and taken to the hospital in Petah Tikva along with his wife.
The husband was hospitalized in Israel for about a week, during which his condition was stabilized. Following the treatment, the couple returned to Gaza.
When the chips were down, then, they knew not only that an Israeli hospital could give lifesaving treatment that Gaza hospitals couldn’t give, but that there was a chance the Israeli authorities would consent to their request even though Gaza is a hostile entity that instills hate and regularly bombards Israel with rockets and mortars — in part at the instigation of the distressed man’s own brother-in-law.
Ideally, this would induce soul-searching not only about Israel’s technological superiority but a value system that sees the humanity even of members of a hostile population. There is, though, no sign of such a reckoning.

Hezbollah MP Walid Sakariya told Lebanese television this week that the nuclear weapon Iran is allegedly developing is intended to annihilate Israel.
In a segment recorded and translated by MEMRI (the Middle East Media Research Institute), Sakariya, also a retired general, told his interviewer on Hezbollah’s al-Manar TV Tuesday that should Iran acquire a nuclear weapon it would serve Syrian as well as Iranian interests, namely the eradication of the Jewish state.
“This nuclear weapon is intended to create a balance of terror with Israel, to finish off the Zionist enterprise, and to end all Israeli aggression against the Arab nation,” Sakariya said.
“The entire equation in the Middle East will change,” he asserted.

Maybe just maybe if Israel hadn't funded Hamas and given them recognition early on, they wouldn't be facing this problem. (Yes, really honestly they did, go look it up.) Why would they have done something that now looks so incredibly stupid? At the time it didn't look that dumb. They viewed the budding Hamas group as a religious counter weight to the PLO, thought they could play one against the other and weaken both. Now in hindsight amazingly stupid, but back then, maybe not so. But did they do it? Absolutely.
Actions have consequences as the Israelis are finding out now. Lesson for us if any? Try to avoid involvement if you can because usually you don't know enough about the players to make informed decisions. The programs just aren't informative enough.
@Cromulent: During that 1400 years there were 600 years of the Inquisition hundreds of years of "pograms" directed at the Jews by "christians" and of course the Holocaust all in Europe all non muslim. Supporting is one thing. But Auschwitz was where? Not in Saudi Arabia or Iran. And what was the nominal religion of those who authored the Holocaust? Not islam. "Christian". Were those muslims abusing those Jews in Russia for hudreds of years? And all through Europe? Again, we need to approach this with a sense of history and more than a bit of humility. The doctrine of deicide was ghastly and made it easy for "christians" to persecute Jews for over a thousand years and even with the Holocaust going full blast Pius did not repeal it unit AFTER the war.
Call me all the names you want. It won't change the facts here. Again, supporting the Holocaust is one thing, actually executing it, which took place not in places under muslim control but in Europe is another thing altogether.

It means that unless someone harms someone without just cause, you can't take their rights from them. PERIOD You can't take their land, you can't take their liberty, none of it. But take Paine's point. You made no effort to refute it. Was he wrong or not? A personal attack on him doesn't refute the correctness of his statement. Is the statement right or wrong sir?
For us today the fact that injustices were done in the past (the horrible actions against the Cherokees in the 1830's) doesn't justify equally horrible actions now. You really want to make that case? Unalienable rights and the doctrine of due process is not dependent in any way how badly people behaved before. All the more reason to ensure that we, the "good guys" don't repeat those mistakes from the past.
And again and y0u've seen me say this time and time again, just because say the Irgun committed terrorist acts in the 40's didn't make all Israelis terrorists. And you want to defend Sand Creek to the class? Or the persuit of the tribe heading TO Canada OUT of the country altogether that was more or less slaughtered as they tried to escape? THOSE RIGHTS, barring an alienating act by the individual himself, cannot be arbitrarily taken from them I don't care who you bloody are be it us, them whoever. As "conservatives" we should be in the frontlines defending "individual" rights against usupation. Denial is a powerful emotion to overcome. Given the balance sheet in the Middle East which extends in years a 1000 times longer than Jack of Wi’s intellect, there are un-reconcilable differences at stake here that cannot be resolved by peaceful means. Someone is going to have to “win” this; someone is going to lose this.
Given I’m not fond of spreading radiated isotopes with half lives in the hundreds of years over wide swaths of useable land or think the concept of MAD has any meaning to a people that practice martyrdom on a daily basis and worship the concept of a good day to die for their god rather than living a good life with their neighbors, it is not difficult to choose a side here if it comes to that.
It appears that in what is left of my life on this planet I’m likely to experience yet another very dark chapter in this regard because the world’s “best and brightest” can’t see evil standing right in front of them every day. Israel exits today because “good men” the world over turned their backs on “jews” everywhere that evil like we see in the middle east today was allowed to proper and grow stronger. This is not a game or fairy tale as some treat it.
There are no winners in nuclear exchanges only bigger losers.

“Thou shalt love him as thyself” is the motto Israeli doctors follow without partiality as they treat both the Palestinian terrorist and his victims. However, some have understandable qualms: "I don't mind servicing wounded Palestinian patients because that's what we were taught to do, but it does bother me when the television news reports detail how many Jews were killed in an attack and the Palestinian patients break into cheers."

What bothers me is the attitude of those who criticize Israel. Of those who boycott Israel. Of those who say Israel is a totalitarian regime that doesn't care about anyone besides their own. When the facts tell us that it's the enemy that bars all religions besides their own, the enemy that kills anyone who doesn't believe what they do, the enemy that tortures anyone unlucky enough to fall into their hands, then I can't understand how anyone can be blind enough not to see the facts for what they are.

This is a clear and obvious reason why Hamas must go in and recognize the State of Israel. The two political entities needs open borders and trade with each other. If Ismail Haniyeh cares anything about his about his brother-in-law, then hopefully both him and the rest of Hamas will care something about the 1.5 million citizens of Gaza. That they have to improve their standard of living, and can very much do so with open borders and trade with Israel. President Abdullah Gul of Turkey, has been pressuring Hamas to recognize the State of Israel, and hopefully it will so more Gazans can have the opportunity to live not die. While Hamas is at it, it can get rid of their hateful doctrine too.
