Secretary Sarah

An outdoor job for Gov. Palin in the Romney administration.

Now that I’m reasonably certain that Mitt Romney will prevail on November 6, I thought I’d make a suggestion for a cabinet post: Sarah Palin for Secretary of the Interior. Despite her controversial media-magnet political baggage, she should at least be on Romney’s short list thanks to her familiarity with the workings of the public lands agencies.

Most of the half billion acres of federal land (the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management and other agencies under the purview of the Department of the Interior; the United States Forest Service governed by the Department of Agriculture) in the United States is located in the American West. Depending on the party controlling the Oval Office, the job of Interior Secretary many times goes to a Western pol, many times a governor or ex-governor. Wally Hickel, Bruce Babbitt, and Dirk Kempthorne are good examples. Some such as Gale Norton and James Watt gathered their expertise in think tanks and legal foundations concerned with public lands policies. Ken Salazar (him of the smart bolo tie), the current Interior Secretary, is an ex-U.S. Senator from Colorado. The successful nominee to the post should have a thorough knowledge of the multiple functions of the public domain, roughly a quarter of the land area of the United States.

While governor of Alaska from 2006 to 2009 Sarah Palin reacted to federal policy on 222 million acres of public land (60% of the land area) in her state used for everything from timber sales and oil and gas leases, to hunting and fishing and other recreational activities. She supported the first steps to build the Alaska gas pipeline, a project of TransCanada and Exxon-Mobil designed to deliver natural gas to the Lower Forty Eight, and still in early development stages. To be sure, her attempt to raise taxes on energy companies doing business in Alaska was a bad idea. Taxes on energy production are already responsible for 90% of annual state revenue. Palin can take partial credit for Alaska’s current $12 billion dollars budget surplus, not bad for a state twice the size of Texas with a population of 723,000. Her policy of pursuing multiple-use (public land utilized in both extractive and recreational ways to maximize local economic benefits) was — as every Western governor knows — a constant battle to assist the creation of jobs, and to help keep her Alaskan constituents prosperous in the face of bureaucratic dictates from Washington driven by green legislation and the unending litigation of environmentalists.

Palin also has a personal connection with the public lands; in fact, risking shrieking green lefty hysteria, I’ll call her a conservationist. She grew up in Alaska and, with her husband Todd, has enjoyed hunting and fishing, and just plain “getting out there.” The Hook and Bullet demographic is usually denigrated as troglodytic by Gaia-type greens, yet hunting and fishing organizations work hard for habitat preservation. Being lampooned as “Caribou Barbie” by the likes of Maureen Dowd looks good on Palin’s résumé given that the New York Times columnist herself might not know the difference between a caribou and a moose. Dowd probably thinks the mission of federal Bureau of Reclamation is the regulation of cosmetic surgery.

Indeed, Palin as a lightning rod for loony green left savagery should be a plus from Romney’s point of view. Her notorious line, “Drill, baby drill,” is a good fit for a Romney energy policy that includes the promotion of such projects as the Keystone XL pipeline, a decision which President Obama ceremoniously punted into his second term (assuming we are so blessed) as a bouquet to his environmental left constituency. Shelving Keystone XL coupled with failing to develop at least a portion of an estimated 85 billion barrels of oil on America’s Continental Shelf at a time when Americans are paying almost four dollars for a gallon of gas is a good indication of the president’s disregard for consumers in order to satisfy a radical portion of his Democratic base more supportive of Solyndra-type boondoggles then a working energy policy.

Sarah Palin has never been shy about criticizing President Obama’s national energy policy or lack thereof. Her Facebook page states that “President Obama doesn’t have an energy plan. He has an energy speech that he continues to give regardless of the facts or his obvious failures.” High gas prices are “one of his campaign promises.” The Keystone pipeline: “If we’re worried about instability in the Middle East, it makes no sense to shun safe and reliable oil from Canada.”

Secretary Salazar continues to stonewall energy leases on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) tracts in the West, and others along the coastal continental shelf. Upon his appointment one of his first acts was to kill 77 leases in Utah previously approved by the Bush Administration. Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming by themselves have roughly 1.8 trillion barrels of “recoverable” oil shale (the U.S. Geological Survey estimates a total of 3 to 6 trillion barrels for that region) that currently sits in bureaucratic limbo. Salazar implemented Obama’s six month moratorium of Gulf of Mexico development following the British Petroleum (BP) “Deepwater Horizon” spill in 2010, and development in that sphere proceeds at a snail’s pace. Salazar maintains a no-drill policy in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). And this past May, new Interior Department regulations governing seismic hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” now add another layer of bureaucracy to that controversial natural gas extraction technique.

Thanks to the Bakken Formation in the western part of the state, North Dakota has America’s lowest unemployment rate (2.9% — June, 2012), its energy boom giving North Dakotans the sort of economic prosperity other Americans can only barely remember. I would think that both Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin are popular public figures in the Peace Garden State.

I am so conflicted with this idea of Sarah Palin as Secretary of the Interior. When others have suggested this, or Secretary of Energy, I figure they're trying to keep 'the little lady' under wraps. Can't have her out there talking and campaigning for the 'wrong people,' y'know.

But I know that's not your motive, Bill. You're quite serious, and I agree, Sarah Palin would be great as Secretary of the Interior. I just hope that wouldn't keep her under wraps. After all, she's one of a very few people who can galvanize the Right.

Stephanie| 8.8.12 @ 9:37AM

Will Romney have her speak at the convention?

MK48| 8.8.12 @ 10:33AM

Does the sun set in the west................

Mike in N.C.| 8.8.12 @ 4:47PM

She would stir many negative memories.

Truncheon| 8.8.12 @ 9:47AM

What makes you think anyone keeps Sarah Palin "under wraps" but herself? Will Ann Coulter be speaking prime time at the convention?

Occam's Tool| 8.8.12 @ 10:33AM

Not a bad idea.

MK48| 8.8.12 @ 10:34AM

What about Michele Malkin............

Al Adab| 8.8.12 @ 12:22PM

There will be a noticable dearth of Conservative voices at the convention. The main GOP power is fearful that "the right" scares voters. Once again the GOP will run a tepid campaign and likely snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

"When Cicero spoke people said, 'didn't he speak well'. When Demosthenes spoke, they marched." Where can the GOP find Demosthenes except in the Conservative Movement?

Doctor Right| 8.8.12 @ 2:52PM

I am conflicted that the Cabinet Secretary who controls the stewardship of the great outdoors is called "The Secretary of the Interior"...

Shouldn't that job go to a guy from "Queer Eye"?

Alan Obama Fan Brooks | 8.8.12 @ 5:02PM

Palin would make a better president than Mittens.

Mike in N.C.| 8.8.12 @ 10:29PM

Galvanize the right and lose the independents. That's why they are keeping "the little lady" under wraps.

Indy| 8.8.12 @ 7:59AM

I agree, she would do well either as Sec. of Energy or Interior but there would be a risk of silencing her voice. Conservatives will need to be outspoken if Romney wins, we will have to drive him to do the right thing on many issues and Palin is key in that role.

c. j. acworth| 8.8.12 @ 8:11AM

Would she be even more effective in tugging Romney to the right if she were part of his team, rather than as a gadfly on the outside, I wonder. Besides, I don't think anyone will have an easy time shutting her up, in or out of a Romney administration. What I wonder about is getting her confirmed in the Senate, even if the Stupid Party takes it back. There will probably be at least a few squishies who will agree with the Dems that she is too "extreme".

Warrior| 8.8.12 @ 9:05PM

Then Mitt should declare the Senate is in recess and appoint her anyway. Why not just wait for the first Saturday and do a recess appointment for all of his picks. Then the Senate can move on the their real pressing issues like naming post offices and getting new equipment for the gym.

JimH| 8.8.12 @ 8:19AM

I suppose the elimination of the Dept. of Energy in the Romney administration is too much to hope for. She would be a valuable addition to the cabinet. Interior would be good, though as Sec. of State she could keep an eye on Russia without having to move ( just kidding).

Tommy Frisco| 8.8.12 @ 8:47AM

I would prefer to see Sarah Palin as GOP chairwoman. That would convince me that the GOP elites are finally listening to our calls for reform.

Kitty | 8.8.12 @ 9:35AM

That's a pipe-dream. The GOP elites hate her.

MK48| 8.8.12 @ 10:40AM

Kitty........we have to send these GOP traitors down the road.

Kitty | 8.8.12 @ 3:33PM

I agree!

Tommy Frisco| 8.8.12 @ 12:09PM

They hate US, Kitty. Sarah Palin represents US. That's my point. That's why that role for her would be so significant.

Kitty | 8.8.12 @ 3:34PM

I know they do. The GOP left us.

MK48| 8.8.12 @ 5:43PM

Kitty...........the GOP never left us "they" are not US and never were.

I could go on about values, honor, and patriotism but WE get it and they never did. They are just self serving thieves and liars.

I say line'm up and turn them into fertilizer.

ray bob| 8.8.12 @ 8:55AM

typical sign out west, "Public Land; KEEP OUT" .... we need more access to these lands for not only energy (et al) but for use by the public in all forms, from grandparents in RV's to college kids in tents ... this would also include motorized transport be it small motorcycles and ATV's to Jeeps ... please vote the current wacko's out on November 6 ...

Mike G| 8.8.12 @ 10:58AM

Part of the problem is that the bureaucratic idiots running things don't even see the irony of the sign. But then again, they are idiots.

Reggie Love| 8.8.12 @ 9:00AM

Sell federal lands! It is insane how much land the federal government owns.

MK48| 8.8.12 @ 10:44AM

Mr. Love...... don't forget the farm land "they" stole in the 80's. The housing collapse is just part of the control agenda.......the end game.

Von Mises Jr| 8.8.12 @ 9:00AM

I think Romney should announce a few short list candidates for key Secretary Positions and shout from the rooftops that ALL CZARS can go to Russia if they wish to continue a career in government.
Bobby Jindal would be a key candidate for either Interior with the goal of culling the EPA and opening up energy, or as head of HHS to dismantle ObamaCare. He has great experience in both areas.
Bob McDonald and Mitch Daniels are also restricted by term limits and would be great Cabinet Secretaries. John Bolton should be announced as Secretary of State Heir Apparent and John Taylor to replace Ben "the bank" Bernanke.
Romney not only needs to pick a conservative voice such as Ryan or Rubio for VP, but provide a clear direction with his proposed Cabinet picks.

Minuteman78| 8.8.12 @ 9:18AM

Absolutely right! Romney DEFINITELY needs to start putting together a cabinet list and start broadcasting it! There's a helluva lot more to an Administration that Prez & VP!

While we're at it, how about Ted Nugent for head of the BATF? :)

Truncheon| 8.8.12 @ 9:48AM

He should be the Assistant to Sarah Palin, at Interior :)

Al Adab| 8.8.12 @ 9:19AM

I,ve alwaysfelt that a contrarian approach in making cabinet appointments could be productive. Placing administrators in charge of agenciew who question the scope and legitimacy of the regulatory agencies could prove valuable. Energy Dept. or Interior Dept. would be good locations for Palin. Better management of national resources and/or public lands would be welcome.

Indy| 8.8.12 @ 9:55AM

Jindal is my pick for HHS, it would give serious indication Romney will repeal the Unafforable Care Act.

Rubio has lost credibility with me, I'd prefer he stay in the Senate unless we could replace him with Allen West. Ryan for VP

Tommy Frisco| 8.8.12 @ 12:18PM

What? Just being articulate and a great speaker is not enough for you Indy? Rubio had a blank slate because of his inexperience, yet many folks were so impressed with his oratory skills, they started chanting for him to become VP or POTUS. I've been trying to warn everyone ever since the chanting began. Unfortunately, many Conservatives can be just as foolish as the Libs.

Kelly Staples| 8.8.12 @ 9:12AM

What a great idea! She'd shake it up!

Gary B| 8.8.12 @ 1:06PM

"Shake it up" is correct. If appointed, her biggest challenge will be the career bureaucrats in Interior. They will sabotage her at every turn. She'll have to really kick ass and I believe she can do just that.

If I were in a position like that, I'd allow the place to shrink by attrition - no new hiring for a long, long time. Lots and lots of good-riddance retirement parties.

MK48| 8.8.12 @ 5:47PM

Gary...we can't afford to wait I say off with their heads with in 2 weeks.

Gary B| 8.8.12 @ 7:53PM

We can dream...

JustAGrandpa| 8.8.12 @ 10:46AM

Mr. Croke, you were doing OK until you wrote this sentence: "To be sure, her attempt to raise taxes on energy companies doing business in Alaska was a bad idea. "

There is nothing sure at all in that sentence. Have you actually looked at why ACES was established? It was not an "attempt" to raise taxes on the oil companies. It was a new law that was established for the purpose of making sure that the politicians and the oil companies didn't collude to cheat the residents of Alaska, the owners of the resources per the Alaska Constitution. It was collusion (cronyism) between the pols and Big Oil that lead to the necessity of ACES. That's why it's named the Alaska Clear and Equitable Share Law. It works just like a royalty given to owners of land when oil/gas drilling or mining is done on their property.

I will give you the benefit of the doubt that you erroneously included that sentence, but I guess it's possible that you are simply advancing a meme put out by the oil companies and the present Governor that it's a bad law.

Some people have written that ACES has caused a drop in exploration and production of oil in Alaska. That is incorrect. Even Parnell's own administration reports that both are up. ACES also includes generous incentives for exploration.

So, Mr. Croke, was it an honest error, or was that sentence agenda-driven?

RCV| 8.8.12 @ 11:20AM

The chances of Romney letting Sarah Palin anywhere near his administration are zero. Moreover, her track record on job dedication isn't exactly high. But why in the world would Romney even consider offering a position to someone like Palin who did everything she could to trash his campaign?

Al Adab| 8.8.12 @ 11:35AM

Romney may include a token Conservative somewhere in his administration should there be such. Do not however expect Conservative policies from him. He is a GOP technocrat, one who promises to better manage the welfare state rather than roll it back and expand liberty.

Ken (Old Texican)| 8.8.12 @ 11:48AM

RCV,
in a nutshell, you view the world through a "limosine communist" klaledioscope.

You are obviously one of the "chosen nomenmklatura". Well good for you....except you are toast.
We the American makers have seen our oopsie with Obama and crew....a bridge too far?

Sarah will not accep[t a Secretary position. She is not a whore like Hillary.
She COULD accept the VP slot again...if Romney gets on his knees. (which I doubt.)

If not a "king-maker", she has certainly become a "prince-maker" already...with no end in sight.

Ken, this woman is the poorest excuse for a public servant we've seen in a long, long time. Romney is far too smart a guy to let her anywhere near his administration.

Stkman| 8.8.12 @ 3:53PM

Why would Romney offer her a cabinet position, simple, to try to control her. Don't worry though, she's a smart cookie and she knows she has more power on the outside than she would on the inside.

Dr. Emilio Lizardo| 8.8.12 @ 12:03PM

No she shouldnt. Whatever you think of her as a person and her ideology, bottom line she failed as the VP nominee, is gaffe-prone and uninformed, failed as the governor of Alaska and generally has more baggage than JFK (and I'm talking about the airport). Even the spectre of a return of Sarah Palin to public office will frighten off the vast number of undecideds, and make the reelection of BHO more likely. The last thing we need is more of Sarah F'ng Palin

Ken (Old Texican)| 8.8.12 @ 12:23PM

Shamki and Lizardo,
your screen names are certainly appropiate eh!

You guys are so ignorant. Two days before accepting the VP bid with McCain, Sarah enjoyed an 87% approval rating as Governor of Alaska.

She chose to help a weak but honorable McCain.
She couldn't quite pull it off because McCain's staff nuetered her. End of story.

nathan| 8.8.12 @ 12:37PM

Her unqualified support for the bridges to nowhere doesn't bother anyone here? Her rather abrupt resignation and questionable reasons for it again is fine with all of you?

Why go backwards here? What really, I mean honestly besides the fact that Sean seems unduly infatuated with her, what really does she bring to the table here? Let her play talking head and move on.

JustAGrandpa| 8.8.12 @ 12:45PM

Your ignorance of Palin is astounding. Aren't you embarrassed to show how lazy(or dishonest) you are?

http://palin4america.com/governor-sarah-palin’s-executive-accomplishments/

Kitty | 8.8.12 @ 4:03PM

She not only stopped the “Bridge to Nowhere," she wanted to redirect the federal funds to Minnesota after the bridge collapse in 2007. Here's an email she sent to her staff:
So ironic - I told Leo, Tibbles, etc just yesterday that we MUST come out with a strong position against AK ' s perceived "Bridge to Nowhere" so we quit looking clueless and selfish across the nation and can clear up the perception that the Gravina project is the state’s priority. The $350m bridge is not our priority.

The nation needs to be spending $ on fixing what we have - Minnesota needs "bridge money" today more than we need a few Alaskans to perpetuate the nonsensicle notion that our Gravina earmark is more important than fixing aged infrastructure.

We would gain so much if we get that message out there - that the nation can pull, and work, together and make wise decisions on federal priorities ... we should see that earmark redirected to Minnesota's tragedy be the Gravina bridge isn’t going to happen on our watch anyway.

Dr. Emilio Lizardo| 8.8.12 @ 1:27PM

The fact that she resigned her governership should be the epitaph on her career in politics. And it wasnt McCain that neutered her, it was her own ineptitude and at the hand of Katie Couric, for Gods sake, that made her look like such a moron. Get over Sarah, Tex.

R Martin| 8.8.12 @ 2:04PM

OK, Ms. Palin has some warts, but many also find her appealing. Since we're playing fantasy games here, how about this for a thought experiment: Would you support Palin at Interior if it meant Newt Gingrich would be Press Secretary?

Warrior| 8.8.12 @ 9:14PM

Come on doc, what does ineptitude have to do with politics? Biden is the vice president and he couldn't out think or cobble a cogent sentence together above the special ed class at a 5th grade level. W butchered the english language and Obama stutters like jackhammer away from his teleprompter and let us not forget his answers about 57 states, corpsemen, tire gauges, etc.

MK48| 8.8.12 @ 5:57PM

Ken...........McCain honorable ??

I read your book good stuff but I am going to disagree with you on McCain. I am thinking the gooks got to him. Everytime he goes off in some weard direction Iam thinking some slopehead showed up with a ball bat to threaten him.

I respect his service but not him as a man.

Skippy| 8.9.12 @ 1:16PM

What about his service is there to admire?

Dai Alanye | 8.8.12 @ 12:37PM

Dr Lizard and a few others seem to have been influenced by the left-wing media with regard to Palin. In fact, it was the McCain campaign that failed Palin, misusing their brightest asset. And in regard to governance, Sarah's record is sterling -- that is to say, 90+% successful, something few other politicians can claim.

Dr. Emilio Lizardo| 8.8.12 @ 1:37PM

So successful that she bailed on her governership? What is it with you people? Sterling record? I want to see BHO beaten and his policies dead and buried.I dont want a redux of Sarah P's ridiculous stammering pronouncements, and the distraction that someone of her meager accomplishments and particular brand of cluelessness would bring as this country tries to recove. JeezisHChrist.

Tommy Frisco| 8.8.12 @ 6:07PM

cicero| 8.8.12 @ 1:45PM

Sarah is fine just where she is. Bringing her into an administration would be a waste. Romney should appoint Secretaries with the clear instruction to shut down as many of the departments as posible. I'm sure that there olthers, but I am running out of time.

Palin gave a much more comprehensive answer about Russia to ABC's Charlie Gibson than what was aired. Unfortunately, they edited out most of what she said.

Governor Palin shared strategic command over the 49th Missile Defense Battalion of the Alaska National Guard:Alaska is the first line of defense in our missile interceptor defense system. The49th Missile Defense Battalion of the Alaska National Guard is the unit that protects the entire nation from ballistic missile attacks. It's on permanent active duty, unlike other Guard units. As governor of Alaska, Palin was briefed on highly classified military issues, homeland security, and counterterrorism.

She was also the commander in chief of the Alaska State Defense Force (ASDF), a federally recognized militia incorporated into Homeland Security's counterterrorism plans. Palin was privy to military and intelligence secrets that are vital to the entire country's defense. Given Alaska's proximity to Russia, she had security clearances beyond what other governor's have.

Here's wow ABC did a hatchet job on her:

I will shed no tears if and when Ken Salazar vacates his role as Interior Secretary. But bay if you want, Sarah Palin, isn't the right person for the job. For one thing, her Senate appointment process will overshadow virtually everything else going on in Washington. It will be a circus. And for another, she's just not well-versed in the relevant technological, legal and economic issues. Oil, gas, fishing, timber, grazing and other rights are complex issues, not to mention dealing with the claims of the Indians. She'd be almost overwhelmed.

Rich D| 8.8.12 @ 3:57PM

Complicated? Yeah, we need more Harvard and Yale PhDs to ponder the crisis for the next four years.

Ken (Old Texican)| 8.8.12 @ 4:55PM

interestingly enough, she dealt with all those issues very well on a day to day basis in Alaska as Governor. She could have settled in as Governor FOREVER up there. She simply did the equitible things in each situation. Duh. 87% of the voters agreed with her.
