With less than 100 days until the election, Governor Mitt Romney
is in the launch position for a vigorous fall campaign with the
stars aligning for success in November. Okay, okay. The London trip
did start out a little rough, but consider the following:
Gallup tracking poll shows the
Governor in a dead heat with President Obama, tied 46 percent even
among registered voters. And this is after a negative TV blitz of
immense proportions unleashed by the Obama campaign against
Romney.
However, Rasmussen’s tracking poll of “likely voters”
reveals Romney beating Obama 49-44 percent with only 4 percent
undecided. “The numbers are similar to the 49% to 43% advantage
Romney enjoys on the question of who is trusted more to handle the
economy.”
Rasmussen puts a lot of emphasis on the declining economy as
impacting the President’s reelection prospects. While Obama’s
numbers are very much like President George W. Bush’s in 2004 at
this juncture in the campaign, “the underlying trends were moving
in his direction” — President Bush’s that is.
On Friday the New York Times
reported that “The United States economy grew by a tepid 1.5
percent annual rate in the second quarter, losing the momentum it
had appeared to be gaining earlier this year” according to
government figures. The previous quarter saw the economy grow by a
2 percent annual rate. This economy is going nowhere, fast; and the
President seems to have run out of cartridges in terms of any new
economic ideas. Of course, the jobs picture is still dismal.
Interestingly, Rasmussen observes that 21 percent of likely
voters favor an increase in government spending, but “three times
as many (64%) think the government should cut spending to spur
economic growth,” a policy preference that breaks in favor of
Governor Romney and the GOP.
Still, President Obama averages a 1.2 percent lead for all
polling to date as calculated by
RealClearPolitics. He also holds an inside-the-margin-of-error lead
in most, but not all, of the battleground states. So the Governor
and the Republicans will have to maintain a full-court press
through the beginning of November.
But another troubling sign for President Obama, and a
corresponding boost for Governor Romney, is the “enthusiasm gap”
documented by the Gallup organization for USA Today.
Democrats, it seems, are “significantly less likely now (39%) than
they were in the summers of 2004 and 2008 to say they are ‘more
enthusiastic about voting than usual’ in the coming presidential
election.” Republicans, on the other hand, are more enthusiastic
now than in 2008, and the same as in 2004 at 51 percent.
Enthusiasm tends to pick up in the post-primary season and is,
no doubt, subject to fluctuations and the tempo of the respective
campaigns. But given the intensity and acrimony of the Republican
primary, this high level of enthusiasm, pre-convention, is a very
good sign for Governor Romney.
TAS readers may recall that I am fond of
quoting former Governor John Engler (R-MI) that Catholics are
the “jump ball” of American politics, at least since Ronald
Reagan.
This is not a universally accepted view as demonstrated by a
recent piece by Michael O’Brien on the websites of NBC and
MSNBC. Basically, he challenges the “myth of the ‘Catholic vote.’”
He cites a recent Gallup poll indicating that Catholics are evenly
split between Obama and Romney, 46-46 percent.
President Obama leads among Hispanic Catholics, 70-20 percent.
Governor Romney leads among Non-Hispanic white Catholics 55-38
percent.
O’Brien notes that President George W. Bush won the Catholic
vote 52 to 47 percent in 2004, and President Obama won it 54-45
percent in 2008 against Senator John McCain. Yet, he argues that
Catholicism is not “pure bellwether” of how a Catholic votes, which
sounds like a truism. There are, of course, those who self-identify
as Catholics even though it is just a matter of cultural affinity
rather than religious practice. And economic interests can also
override religiosity in many cases. Gallup’s poll indicates that
ethnicity and class enter into voters’ calculations, too.
Setting aside the question as to what religious motivation might
move a registered voter to become a likely voter, O’Brien does
recognize that Catholic voters do matter “at the margins, or in
very specific locations or instances” —like Florida, Ohio,
Michigan, Nevada, and Wisconsin. He quotes various Catholic
observers who put this marginal group at roughly 10 percent of the
Catholic vote, “a big enough group in important states like
Pennsylvania and Ohio,” the latter a “must win” for Romney or any
GOP presidential candidate.
Honestly, O’Brien sounds like he is whistling past a graveyard.
Both the Bush 2004 and the Obama 2008 campaigns made huge
investments in garnering Catholic votes. Perversely, President
Obama seems to be doing everything possible to alienate Catholic
voters, notwithstanding the usual suspects of Catholic dissidents
who would never vote for Romney, or any other Republican, under any
circumstances.
Appleby| 7.30.12 @ 6:35AM
Devout Catholics are more likely to vote for Romney because of ObamaCare. Otherwise I suspect Catholics will vote pretty much the same as other people.
Aristocat| 7.30.12 @ 6:41AM
For a Catholic to vote for Obama would be a mortal sin because Obama has promoted partial birth abortion, negligent homicide of abortion survivors, and sodomy. Could the man be any more anti-Catholic?

You are assuming that those who call themselves Catholic are truly Catholic, and not just Catholics in name only. They may go through the rituals and mouth the same general pieties. However, when it comes down to practical matters such as politics, half of Catholicism leaves its religion in the pews when it walks out the church door. As does Protestantism.
Mimi | 7.30.12 @ 7:08AM
In Truth ...when did it ever happen that an Arch Bishop , now a Cardinal had to stand before the world ....with a mic and announce a PRESIDENT lied to him and made a bad deal. That he could never ask his people to sin against their God, mortally to serve the will of an ignorant and not trustworthy leader...WHEN???......NEVER BEFORE IN HISTORY !
Obama did this to himself.....he can never win and deserves NOT ONE Vote from any Catholic or God fearing Christian either!
MK48| 7.30.12 @ 10:51AM
Mimi...............the proper word used is "God Fearing" I was brought up a catholic..yes served mass 3 times on Sunday.
There came a day as a young man I started to question my faith. Not sure how it started but I just knew that kneeling in a box telling another man my sins just didn't seem right. I served my country came home got married and started a family. My wife and I tried to get our first child baptized catholic but the bishop said no because we weren't members of the church.....just one more thing to question about religon.
As time went on and one more child Jane and the kids attended a local christian church. Every sunday as they walked out the door I said no thanks they are just a bunch of hypocrites. I knew deep down there was a berning desire to find HIM.
I won't bore you with the details but the Lord had something for me to do with my life and came to me. Today I attend one of the greatest Christian Churches every week the pastor preaches from the Bible, everyone walks in the door with a bible and we refer to it along with the message notes.
You ask why I share this story because unless you are being feed by the Bible the book of life everyday you are lost.
The idea that a president lied to the Cardinal and it turned out a bad deal is the problem. The only deals that should be made is with the Lord. When the catholic church starts preaching from the bible and the flock show up with the bible to refer to then only then will the true God show up.
Nick| 7.30.12 @ 1:38PM
MK48,
During all those Masses at which served for all those years, did no one explain to you that Sacred Scripture is preached every day during the Liturgy of the Word? That at every daily Mass there is a first reading from either the Old Testament or from a letter, Acts, or Revelation; and a second reading from one of the Gospels? And, that during a three year period, the readings for the daily and Sunday Masses will cover almost the entire Bible?
Also, if you and your wife were not living the Catholic faith by enrolling in your local parish, and attending weekly Mass on the Lord's Day, why did you want your child baptized into the Catholic Church?
If you were raised in the Church when I was (1970s & 80s,) I would say you suffer from poor catechesis, as I myself did. In case you were unaware, in the early 1990s the Church published a new Catechism. You can find it online and it will answer any questions you may still have.

Nick my friend........my years were from 1950 - 1960 back then the mass was said in latin. Only a short serman was recited from the pulpit in english. My gripe today and back then was the bible was not taught in church back then. If you were attending catholic school you got catechism that was it. Just storys about the life of Jesus. The bible was not used as a tool to learn from.
Fast forward to today not much has changed. My catholic friends say the bible is not used when they attend.
I am just saying unless you are in the word learning from it everyday how would you have a close relationship with God. If you pastor or preist is not using the bible to guide His sheep you will be in name only that's the difference between religion and "faith".
Just as in John 8:31-32 how will you know the truth if your not in the word.
Nick| 7.31.12 @ 1:33PM
MK48,
I am not that familiar with the Tridentine Rite, I'm afraid. But, wasn't the Gospel read during it?
The 1950s and '60s were almost as bad as the '70s & '80s, as far a catechesis is concerned. And, I agree with you, the Word of God was not taught as it should have been during this time.
But, this has been changing for the past 20 years. There are many parishes that are having great Bible studies taught. And, thanks to many Protestant converts to the Faith, home study is also possible through videos, magazines, websites, and CDs. This is how I have been studying for the past 15 years.
Please, tell your Catholic friends to find a parish where the priests teach orthodoxy. Every major metropolitan area has them, they just have to look. If they live in a rural area, they might be harder to find. They should pray on it.
I also agree that one needs to be deep in the Word to be close to God. But, one also needs to be deep in Sacred Tradition as well as Sacred Scripture, in order to know everything that Christ taught His disciples. You can't have one without the other.
The early Church Fathers taught from the Scriptures as well as from Tradition. Just as Saint Paul and the rest of the Apostles did.
Yours in Christ, Nick
p.s. The Catechism of the Catholic Church uses hundreds, if not thousands, of verses of Scripture. I hope you look up some topics with which you have a problem, with an open heart and mind, and see why the Church teaches them.
MK48| 7.30.12 @ 10:35PM
Nick......both websites are impressive but I choose to read and learn from the "Book of Life".
Trey| 7.31.12 @ 8:50PM
Glad you still practice in some form, I do think you would benifit from today's easily understood chatechism though. Recall that Christ built a Church, a Church who developed traditions and not until much latter gave us a bible. Christ also told the appostles that what they sowed on earth would be sowed in heaven, and whose sins they forgive would be forgiven. If He mean't His Church to last forever, as suggested by, "upon this rock I will build My Church and even the gates of hell shall not prevail against it" then He would have expected sucsessors to those apostles, and the original apostles did indeed chose succesors. These succesors continue to sew today, and this original intent still reasons, 2000 years latter, that we confess to a man, a succesor, serving in persona Christi....but it doesn't have to be in a box, it just makes it easier sometimes.
God Bless
MK48| 8.1.12 @ 2:30AM
Trey..........why would you confess to a man when you can go directly to Him. This goes back to what kind of relationship you have with God.
If he died on the cross for me than the least I can do is try in get as close to Him as I can.
Nick| 8.1.12 @ 7:26AM
MK48,
You can't get closer to Christ than consuming the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Our Lord, can you?

When I was a Kid, in the late 50's and the early 60's, there were THREE Church Services every Sunday. 7:00, 9:00, and 11:00 AM.
We had 3 Protestant Churches and a Catholic Church.
They were all FULL, at every Service.
Now, the Churches are open for only ONE Service per Sunday.

When I was young, the American People were sliding deeply into communism. (70s & 80s). Now, we are buried in despotism from our heads to our toes, & in panic mode trying to elect a liberal republican as the end of all of this mess.
Before I was born, America was a nation of self government (early 20th century). The American People knew their city & county councils, thier state house, senate & governor. Their federal governmental functions. Today, the America People know nothing & do nothing.
& yet we continue to blame the devil. Oh yes, satan is rising, but we the people made America what it is today, no one else. If we can't find our work & do it, there won't be any America to worry about anymore.

Too many Catholic parishes are staffed with a peculiar brand of ComSymp clerics infesting the Body of Christ, preaching a far left version of the so-called Catholic Social Teaching. There are a few reactionary bishops- like ours in Raleigh- but the bumpers on the cars in the parking lot in our Catholic parish are all Obama and the usual Diversity leftish pablum. And where's Romney? In the UK and Israel for chrissake. He'll never get to the right of the boastful Obama on the middle east, Afghanistan, al Qaeda. Not that Americans really give a hoot about that anymore, the simpering neocons notwithstanding. Romney should have been at home, telling us exactly how he plans to fix this economy and get the nation back to work. But instead, he's gaffing it up at the Olympics and pissing off the Brits. He really is tonedeaf. This should be a slamdunk of a beatdown of the worst president and worst administration in history, and Romney is doing his damndest to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
TrueBlue | 7.30.12 @ 1:31PM
Yes, totally bad decision to take a few days away from being over here telling us how he's going to fix things... which he hasn't been doing for the last few months. Oh wait, he HAS been doing that, you must be watching too much of the MSM and only catching their "gotcha" clips.

If you understand anything about statistics, you can see right through this blatant attempt to depress the conservative vote. In the recent Gallop poll, the sample contained one-and-a-half more Democrats than Republicans. But the country has been about 40% conservative and 20% liberal for decades. So an accurate sample should probably be about 2 to 1 in the opposite direction as the poll sample.
Furthermore, Gallop and others (except Rasmussen) sample "registered" voters. But who gives a crap what someone thinks if they are registered and do not vote. Rasmussen samples "likely" voters and combined with the thirty percent advantage in the "enthusiasm" factor for Republicans versus Democrats, the polls are even more slanted to produce the results the elites wish for than reality.
Landslide Romney!
Libertyinfinite| 7.30.12 @ 12:21PM
So the guy who signed in government take over of our health care industry and gay marriage is conservative now. Good luck with that. All that the right is doing is pushing romney worship because it is afraid of obama.
The Republican Party is far to liberal to help anyone any more. The American People no longer govern this nation, it's on auto pilot. We need to wake & realize that we the people are the problem. America is no longer a nation of freedom because the American People no longer self govern.
We can't change from fascist/socialist O to commie romney, & imagine all of our problems away. This nation is at its end, if its people do not change to govern again.
Von Mises Jr| 7.30.12 @ 1:32PM
If Romney does not stand up to the liberal Republican Establishment once in power, then the states will. I believe that 26 states have told Sebelius to take a flying (bleep) at a rolling donut.
Virginia pretty much said that if Obama tries to commandeer his resources and state militia under the NDAA, they will be ducking bullets.
And with 40% of the American people claiming to be conservative, the elites and the 20% liberals are going to get the smack down of their lives. Now it is becoming clear to even the dullest among us that socialism sucks.
Just look at the GDP growth of 1.5% and number of SSD claims last month. Disability claims were 85K when employment gains of 84K included 1/3 hamburger flipper jobs.

The American People are no longer self governing. No one in America today has any clue about any government function. 50 states we have, & no one has a clue what is going on in any of them as we would if we were a nation of self government.
You can't look to romney to help us. America is too far gone to look at any of them. We have to start self governing again. The people need to drive this ship, because it is sinking fast.

Right now I choose obama. Between two liberals, I want the one who isn't from the right. Is there anything in romneys past to make him conservative? No, but the process that got him the nomination is a joke. He is liberal.
Look, the American People created this America, this with fascist chools who abuse this nations youth, medias who foster communism, leaders who offer socialist ideology as a way of life. We the people created this America. We refused to do the work of governing America, & now it's run itself into oblivion. Understand?
We can not continue to live in the dark and do nothing. We the people must start taking the helm. We won't with romney. He will have us look to liberal republicans as the answer.
I'd vote for Santorum/Bachmann. But this nation is going to h- with either romney or obama.

Yes, there are plenty of us out there that I would say are the quiet majority. Our stories have been handed down by our fathers, Uncles, grandfathers and mothers. That we represent democracy and what is right.Obamas attempt at facism and that is what it is to be dictator of our country is not going to work. 1. Explain how Michelle got a raise from $100,000 to $317,000 per year as "community relations attorney" from the Chicago hospital that got a million dollar earmark courtesy of Senator Obama?
2. Explain why and how Chicago crook Rezko partially paid for Obama's property.
3. Why doesn't Obama help his starving poor half brother in Kenya from his millions, or does he need an earmark for that too?
4. Why won't Obama release the records of Fast and Furious under subpoena when he has leaked and disclosed all our interrogation methods, our internet wars against Iran, the details of Seal Team Six, and other nationa security matters?
TrueBlue | 7.30.12 @ 2:02PM
I like Romney BECAUSE he's boring. When has he dissed our allies? Are you referring to the Olympics "gaffe" where he told them the honest truth when they asked his opinion? Oh no, not the truth!
As for his speeches, you obviously missed the VFW and NAACP speeches Purp. Let's see... isn't honest about what? Because he won't release tax records that really are none of our business, IF there was actually anything in his taxes that he could be hit on the IRS would have hit him on it already! How everyone keeps missing that I can't even begin to fathom.
By elitist you mean successful? Why are people so consumed with punishing success these days? It's even funnier having the Obama campaign hitting Romney on Bain when 1) Obama received nearly a million dollars from the Bain CEO in 2008 (a Democrat) and 2) his campaign buys nearly all of their office supplies from... wait for it... STAPLES, which was a company that received funding from Bain that helped it go national. Dang, what a horrible person this guy is.
Don't have to agree with his stances (quite a few of which I do not), but dishonest and elitist he is not. He tells people the truth whether it's pleasant or not, and he believes in personal responsibility over government handouts.
You MIGHT be able to compare his international policies to GW Bush, but since he hasn't actually held a position directly related to foreign policy you are basing your opinion on hearsay. But then, that's what most Liberals do anyway.

Yes, dissed. He just dissed Mexico, and of course Great Britain. He also pissed off the Palestinians, alluding to them as uncultured.
Yes, Dishonest - he didn't build Bain, Bill Bain gave him Bain Capital as a favor to George Romney. Did you know that?
Good Show, Mitt the Twit!
He's surrounded himself with GW Bush foreign policy and economic advisors - what do you think his policies will be like?
Releasing his tax records, like his father before him and all modern presidents is his way to show trust in the American people. He wants us to trust him - so if he doesn't have anything to hide, why doesn't he trust us. And yes, it is our business, just like his medical condition is. To be our President is a high bar to meet, and he must make that bar or not be elected.
Successful, yes - so let him explain how to make it rich. We'll listen. How do you get to be a millionaire? Aren't you curious?
He's pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, and the father of Romneycare which lead directly to Obamacare.

Analysis like what Mr. Mehan provides is superficial when he mentions percentages of Catholics living in individual states. The amount of people who have Catholic antecedents far outstrips the amount of people who practice their Catholic faith in every state in the Union. For instance, Rhode Island has a very large universe of people who are from a Roman Catholic heritage yet very few people in Rhode Island practice the Catholic faith. Why else would Rhode Island elect the anti-Catholics like Lincoln Chafee, Sheldon Whitehouse, Jack Reed and Patrick Kennedy to office? It is doubtful that practicing Roman Catholics(ie. attends Mass weekly, goes to Confession at least every other month, believes abortion is murder and homosexuality is immoral) are more than ten percent of voters in any state of the Union.
Practicing Catholics understand that the Democratic Party is anti-Catholic so they are forced to vote for the lesser of two evils, the Republican Party. But that party is very thin gruel indeed. That party worships a free market ideology ahead of God and Catholic morality. In fact, Republican leaders like the Cheney and Bush families are more comfortable with the anti-Catholicism of the Democratic Party than they are with those who practice their Catholic faith. Witness the support each family gives to homosexual marriage and abortion rights.

I wouldn't count on Obama getting the majority of the Catholic or protestant believers. I have plenty of Catholicsin my family and he will not get their vote. Not just because of him forcing the contraception issue on the Catholic Church and using class warfare against them as they stated a war on women but because of hislate term abortion views and his approvel of same sex marriage. This president is going to lose because he has alieniated every demographic group except for the radical liberals.

Actually, the left tries to be "inclusive" of as many special interest groups as possible while demonizing the "wealthy" to appeal to idealistic, smug white elite liberals and the rest of their core, illiterate third-worlders, demonize elite whites. It's rather funny that the typical elitist white liberal wouldn't be caught dead (so to speak) living in non-white neighborhoods.
If there's one thing that Democrats need around are Republicans because they know that their policies won't work. The worst thing for them is to start WINNING elections and getting into serious power. Then they're Greece or even worse, South America.
George Collins| 7.30.12 @ 5:18PM
Polish Knight, you are very observant in my opinion, as I spend a good deal of time in South America for work, and I've made the observation often that it's not Greece that we're heading towards, it's Argentina. The more destitute the neighborhood, the more of a strangehold Cristina has on the populace.
However, I have great faith in Governor Romney and Ic am onfident he will win. Then the work starts.
Catholics are a nebulous group, if you can even count them as a group, as their adherents cut such a wide swath in our country from recent South and Central American immigrants to CEOs and Wall Street traders.
But thoughtful Americans will largely turn out for Romney, and hopefully, we will right the course.
