Alright, we’re a month into the campaign and already things are
looking more favorable for Mitt Romney than anyone might have
expected. He’s pretty much wrapped up North Carolina and made
Michigan and Wisconsin competitive. If nothing else, this will mean
Obama must divert resources from Colorado and Ohio, which he’s
absolutely going to have to have in order to win the electoral
vote.
The stickler is going to be Virginia. It seems like it should be
a Republican state, judging from the most recent gubernatorial
election. But the vast reach of federal employment into northern
Virginia seems to be having an impact. Washington, D.C. is the only
city in the country that has prospered in the Obama Era and it
appears as if enough of this prosperity might filter out to
northern Virginia to win the whole state. It would be ironic indeed
if the final impact from Obama’s financial blowout were to buy
enough votes in his back yard to turn the election.
But not to worry. We’ve still got a long long way to go.
The most important thing about this election is that Obama has
painted himself into a corner. He won in 2008 because he was able
to widen his appeal to broad swathes of the electorate, including
most of Wall Street and people making more than $100,000. With
nothing to show for his four years, however, he’s turned to
demonizing these people. Lots of luck. He’s managed to turn all
that money against him on the wild gamble that somehow all this
will appeal to the “middle class.”
But the middle class isn’t looking for handouts. It didn’t vote
for him in 2008 and is even less likely to this time. Only the
truly poor really respond to this “grow the government” stuff. Thus
Obama’s only hope is that he has forced enough people out
of the middle class and into poverty so that they will vote for
him. With the generation just coming out of college, it may work.
These kids have no memory of Reagan and don’t even know what a
thriving private sector looks like. But anybody who can remember
the “malaise” that hung over the nation during Jimmy Carter and the
jolt of creativity that came when Reagan took over knows it can
happen again.
In such a situation, Romney’s strategy is surpassingly simple.
Be the happy warrior. Be positive, exude confidence, attract people
to your cause. Tour the country spreading good cheer while The
President remains huddled in a defensive crouch in the White
House. ”America’s best days are still ahead of us.” That’s
exactly right. I haven’t heard one false note out of this campaign
and the people running it obviously know what they’re doing. This
bus trip over the past week was a stroke of genius. I think he
should do about six more before the end of the campaign. (Remember,
it was a bus trip that launched Bill Clinton and Al Gore on the
road to victory in 1992.) Romney has to mix it up with the public.
He’s got to gain more of the common touch. It’s not just a matter
of photo ops, it’s the education he’ll get himself.
Romney has obviously led a somewhat sheltered life. He’s been in
prep school, Harvard, Bain Capital. There’s a lot he doesn’t know
and a lot he has to learn. But he can learn and if he
does, it will show through quickly. If Romney rolls into the fall
having learned things on the road, with a much firmer grasp on the
pulse of the country, he will prove not only that he can do the job
but that he can learn on the job, which is something Obama
hasn’t been able to do at all.
The only thing I worry about now is Romney’s speaking style.
Here I think he could learn a lesson from the President. Barack
Obama supposedly learned his intonations from the Reverend Wright
and that’s not surprising. Anyone who ever heard a good
African-American preacher rousing his flock has had to
wonder, ”Gee, what would happen if one of these evangelizers
decided to go into politics?”
It’s one of the strange and overlooked ironies of the age of
Twitter and Facebook and instant communication that one of the
biggest assets a candidate can have is the ability to give a good
speech. Look at the Obama himself. He candidly admits his ability
to give a good speech is his best (perhaps only?) asset. I was at a
humdrum Washington event about a year ago when one of the speakers
was a frumpy Tennessee Congressman who looked like he had just
rolled out of bed. I was frankly wondering how he had ever got into
his office when he took the podium and launched into a stem-winding
oration that had everyone mesmerized.
The South has always been the home of great political speakers,
but it’s true everywhere. The current Brooklyn Borough President is
a politician named Marty Markowitz who has made an entire career
out of firing up audiences with his tumultuous speaking style. I
once saw him address an all-black church in Bedford-Stuyvesant. He
climbed into the pulpit amid a few nervous titters and immediately
roared, “I woke up this morning and knew it was going to be a
beautiful day because I WAS GOING TO BE SPENDING IT WITH THE
CONGREGATION OF THE AME ZIONIST CHURCH!!” He had the crowd on its
feet within seconds.
Now I’m not saying Romney should try channeling Martin Luther
King or William Jennings Bryan. That obviously wouldn’t be him. But
he could be more poetic. I saw the news clips after Obama made his
colossal gaffe in saying “the private sector is doing fine.” Romney
picked it up but there was no cadence, no drama to his remarks. He
sounded as if he were still addressing a seminar at Harvard
Business School. “He thinks the private sector is doing just fine.
Do you think the private sector is doing fine? I don’t think the
private sector’s doing fine.”
Come on. This is the time to roll out the rhetoric: I look
around me and I see unemployment lines filled with hard-working
Americans who haven’t been able to find a job in two years. I see
college graduates saddled with tens of thousand of dollars of debt
and who realize their only hope is a two-year unpaid internship. I
see families who never imagined themselves as anything but middle
class applying for food stamps. I see a whole generation facing the
prospect that they nay never be able to gain a foothold onto the
ladder of success. And this President thinks the private sector is
doing just fine? I don’t think this President even knows what a
private sector is. He thinks the way to grow the economy is to have
the federal government borrow more money from China and give it to
state and local governments to hire more… “teachers and
firemen”?
Whoa, wait a minute. How did we get to teachers and firemen?
People in Wisconsin and Iowa aren’t objecting to hiring teachers
and firemen. They just don’t want to be bankrupted paying for
pensions so teachers and firemen can retire at age 55. You don’t
criticize state and local governments by talking about people that
everyone respects. You talk about an institution everybody hates —
like THE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES. President Obama wants to
tax people out of their earnings and borrow more money from China
so we can HIRE MORE PEOPLE FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR
VEHICLES. There, that’s it.
Oh well, it will take time. Fortunately, we’ve still got plenty
of it. Martin Luther King didn’t think up his “I Have a Dream”
speech standing on the Capital Mall that hot August afternoon He
had given it dozens of times before to smaller audiences. William
Jennings Bryan had given his “Cross of Gold” speech a hundred times
before addressing the 1896 Democratic Convention. You try out
different themes, different metaphors, different phrases and gauge
the audience’s response until you find something that works.
It will happen, I have no doubt. At some point in the next few
months, standing in front of the bus in some small town in Iowa,
Romney is going to find the right words, the right phrases, the
right tone of voice. Then everything will fall into place.

If Romney is the solution we have a hell of a problem. Lets face it Willard has a chance to win, only because Obama has been a horrible President. He has no program but what his consultants, big contributors, and pollsters tell him to say. In that, he like Obama. This country is headed for the dumpster, and all we have to choose from is twiddle dee and twiddle dumber.

"We didn't get here in one election and we aren't getting out of the hole in one election."
That is the key. It's going to be a long hard slog to undo all the damage that's been done. We have to start somewhere with someone. That the someone is Romney is just the way it is. Deal with it, Jack and Appleby and all the rest of the naysayers. We have to start somewhere. Staying home is not an option in this election. If you don't like the top of the ticket, then concentrate your efforts on the down ticket races and vote for conservatives in those. I'm not a big Romney fan either, but if the choice is Romney or four more years of zero with a chance he could put in a couple more Kagans or wise Latinas, then the choice is clear.
Von Mises Jr| 6.22.12 @ 8:50AM
The choice is between a de facto dictatorship and fascism versus a chance to regain our Constitution and free market capitalism.
Romney needs to choose the right team (Ryan for VP would be a great start).
But continuing down the road of lawlessness of the Obama regime is worse than serfdom. Serfs and slaves were treated better than the totalitarians such as Stalin and Mao (that this crowd worships) treated their Comrades.
But I have faith in the American people. Soros, Maurice Strong from the UN and the Progressive/liberal/socialist thought that a black president could enslave the nation and we would be too frozen with political correctness that we would not object. Guess again.
Al Adab| 6.22.12 @ 12:11PM
With apologies to Phyllis Schaffley, what we need is a Choice not an Echo. Sure a liberal republican is better than what we have, but it will not eliminate the social-welfare state. Incrementalism and small steps may yet bring us out and yes, we have to begin somewhere.

I'm middle class and have more in common with the poor folk than the wall street crowd, but I don't want to be dirt poor nor do I want a government that puts me in the poor house. Both Roney and Obama seem destined to put the middle class in th epoor house.

No, I really think it's Obama's to lose, and he's going a good job of it. Romney brings zero to the table: no charisma, charm, sophistication; no ideas; no track record worth writing home about.
Republicans and conservatives are still in the wish-fulfillment stage regarding Romney: they want him to be what he isn't.
I keep thinking: okay say Obama loses and Romney becomes president. Then what? You've essentially got an empty suit running the country at that point. Stay tuned for disappointment after disappointment with Romney. Republicans had the chance to nominate a conservative, but instead decided on the safe choice, a moderate.
The next four years are going to be sheer hell for Republicans, politically speaking, and I'm glad of it. Republicans deserve Mitt Romney.

Don't try to remanufacture Romney into a Man Of The People; he is no such thing. The only time he "sees" all those other kinds of people you have mentioned is in arranged photo shoots or on television or maybe in "The Economist" magazine. For heaven's sake don't dress him up in Wal-Mart clothes and parade him through neighbourhoods he would never visit if he made his own agenda, with that Politician's Look of feigned interest and concern. True, it's better than parading through the back yards of Hollywood and donning a Dale Jr. leather jacket and wading into the crowd at Talladega; but please keep your mind on Dukakis in that tank and John Kerry in his Elmer Fudd garb pretending to the people of Ohio that a-hunting he would go.
Romney is not a "man of the people" and trying to fool people into thinking he is one will make him a cartoon character. If he's got to tour anything, send him to businesses that are struggling to stay afloat and show him dispensing his wisdom to people who will understand that on this subject he knows his stuff.
And by the way, keep him out of the Black Baptist Churches. Way too much baggage there.

All kinds of things have been done by politicians "for the people."
Things like forced collectivization, famines, political purges, mass executions, etc.
These are the kinds of things that LEFTWING demagogues do "for the people."
In contrast, "Filthy Rich Republicans" like "RobMe" create jobs for millions through the creation of businesses.

The RIGHT are Producers; the LEFT are TAKERS.

Doctor - you have it upside down. Don't you know anything about Marketing? You can invest all you want, create fantastic products or services - but if you don't have customers to buy them, you go bust. You market to your customers to tell them what you have to sell and entice them. But first, my uninformed one, is that you must know if there is a market for what you want to produce or sell. No market (=customers), no business. The basis of this economy, over 70% of the economy is consumption - consumption by whom? Consumers (=customers), that's who.
Geesh, you righties are so wedded to your beliefs, you cannot fact facts.
And, what can government do to help in an economic downturn - give jobs to customers so they can buy goods and services in the private sector to re-start the engine - and then back off and let the private sector hum along again.
OMG it's so simple and you are so resistant. If you don't have a job, you don't have money, you don't become a customer which generates other jobs.
Creating wealth is NOT creating jobs.
If the rich are so great at job creation, and they have been enjoying the Bush tax cuts for a decade, where are the JOBS? Hmmmm?

Most people don't pay cash for consumer goods.
We live in a nation where people have to finance their lifestyles of consumption. Consumer credit is king. Without financing, most businesses would be not be able to stay open.
"Customers" live or die in the marketplace, based on their ability to qualify for financing.

He was responsible for a HUGE expansion of the Federal Gov't, far beyond it's Constitutionally-ordained authority.

In that regard, he's very similar to the current moron in the WH.

Purp| 6.23.12 @ 11:13AM
Actually, it was FDR's policy of austerity and restraint in 1937 that created the mini-Depression and lengthened the overall depression, that lasted until WWII - when GOVERNMENT spending ended the Great Depression.
Keynesian policies worked, still work and always will, when needed. Unregulated capitalism always fails and we have crashes every 10-15 years. By 1910 or so, we finally figured that out and created the Fed. When unfettered, capitalism always is the boom-bust cycle. Regulation smooths out the cycle to the advantage of all, not just the super rich.

CJW| 6.22.12 @ 12:02PM
With a deficity of 15 trillion, unemployment of 10%, no drilling for oil/gas, a corrupt Justice Dept, an American murdered with guns sent by the Obama regime, a marxist president, and your feelings are hurt because of catfish/corn?
Where are your prioritites? Do you want Obama or Romney as president?
Virtue| 6.22.12 @ 3:43PM
Romney. But it his to lose....
Doctor Right| 6.22.12 @ 3:50PM
Who cares?
He's not running for the Presidency of "the South."
It's Romney or Obama. Take your pick.
Occam's Tool| 6.22.12 @ 6:36PM
Virtue: will he help the Southern economy and revitalize B'ham better than Obama? I think so.
I'm a Chicago Yankee Jewboy whose wife graduated from the Capstone, who was on faculty of the U of Alabama School of Medicine, and who still has an Alabama Medical license. Hot Cornbread made well with butter is one of the best things on earth. And Southern men have saved my life.
Bill Hussein O'Stalin| 6.22.12 @ 7:12AM
What we have here is some more bad advice flowing Romney's way.
Why wouldn't he vocalize the problems inherent in running government? Yes, it's true and a fact that money is being borrowed from China to support local governments. The public is savvy enough to grasp the relationship and understand the ultimate end game. It may be here this October as we slip into another recession.
As far as the fire and brimstone approach in speech making, that would only go so far in appealing to the general public and the general public is where this election is to be decided.
So far, Romney has outwitted the Republican Party and the group of morons who ran against him. Now all he has to do is maintain the game and point out the failure of Obama, INC.
Dai Alanye | 6.22.12 @ 10:25AM
Hussein O'S is still mesmerized by Romney. The idea of Mitt outwitting anyone is ridiculous. His success in politics has only been bought, and often no amount of money has been sufficient to save him.
Romney can't win the election, but he has one advantage: the other guy can give it to him. If Barrack continues to break down, the public will be driven more and more to Romney so long as he makes no major error.
But as for a conservative liking Mitt Middleman for his political philosophy or charisma, that's little more than a symptom of naivete.
C. Vernon Crisler | 6.22.12 @ 10:40AM
Dittos....
Bill Hussein O'Stalin| 6.22.12 @ 11:36AM
Actually, no mesmerization is needed. As far as Mitt outwitting someone he's gone a long way without your support.
All success is bought in one way or the other. Frankly, you sound like an OWS loser, jealous and mesmerized by your own internal class warfare.
If Romney does win the election be prepared for half baked truths about how he won because Obama is a loser, not because Romney is a winner.
The fascination with invisible conservatism continues. There never has been a conservative and it's a losing proposition. Talk about naivete!
I hope you don't handle your own finances.

As hard as the Country's 5th Column Press tries to hide the TRUTH of Obamanation, they are no match for the Facts on the ground.
How many people are out of a job? 12 Million? How many are there when ALL OF THEM are counted?
That's a lotta Votes.
How many Union folks do ya suppose Voted for Scott Walker? How many folks do ya think work in the Oil and Gas Industries? How many are there in the Coal Industry? How many Dem Pols from West Virginia, are NOT going to the Democrat Convention? (You folks, don't be fooled. They're just puttin on a Show, to save their own asses. GET RID OF THEM, come November!) Ohio is a Coal State, with a good, strong Conservative Governor, in Kasich. Wisconsin and Michigan are DEFINATELY in play.
People wanna Work. They wanna feel the feeling one gets, when He, or She can provide for their Family. They don't want a Welfare Check or an Unemployment Check from The Food Stamp President. They want a PAYCHECK from where they WORK. I believe that Blacks, the hardest hit by this Sick Bastard, will mimic the Union Voters in Wisconsin and Vote their pocketbooks.

I assume you can read a chart .... Notice the huge dip under Bush and how the economy has climbed back under Obama. Oh, my, Fixed News lies to you... Believe what you will - these are facts.
Drunken Sailor| 6.22.12 @ 12:53PM
My, my. Nice graph. It shows quite well when the numbers began to dip doesn't it. It would appear to start in Dec 2006. Isn't that about the same time the Democrats took control of Congress and started passing all of their stupid ideas? I'm sure that is just a coincidence.
Purp| 6.22.12 @ 1:27PM
Passing? Do you know how a bill gets passed into LAW? You need to go back to school.
You righties constantly ignore you had President Bubblehead, I mean Bush, that wouldn't sign Democratic Legislation, just like Obama won't sign yours.
In 2006, the four years of Total Republican Control started having it's effect - tragically for America, I might add. Are you brain-dead?
Just like after 4 years of the Obama effect, we've reversed the Bush administration's crash and have produced 4.3 million jobs - more than in the entire Bush administration net. We'd be in even further along if the House wasn't Republican obstructionists for the last 2 years.
Drunken Sailor| 6.22.12 @ 2:17PM
I am fully aware of how a bill becomes a law. Have you ever heard of a Lame Duck President? Do you know where spending originates?
The problem with Bush was he spent to much. But hell, he is a rank amatuer compared to Obama. Bush's other downfall was he believed the bullshit from the left about compromise and reached across the aisle to work with the Dems. Guess old Bush forgot that the Left always promises to meet in the middle but never hold up their end of the deal. He was gullible. Obama is just plain destructive.
As for the rest of your rant. Pure garbage. From your beloved Factcheck.org
But — what the president didn’t mention — total employment in the U.S. remains nearly 1.7 million below where it was the month Obama took office, and more than 6 million below where it was at the best point in the Bush administration, in January 2008.

And, yes, it is still the Bush Depression. As it will always be known such, just the Great Depression is blamed on Hoover for 80 years and counting.

Doctor Right| 6.22.12 @ 9:49AM
Well since we haven't had 6% unemployment since Obowma became Prez, and won't have less than 8% as long as he is Prez, then I guess it's a useless debate, isn't it?
The "Bush depression"??? LOL!!! Yeah...I'd like to see you explain that one!

Full Employment under Bush? You have forgotten the "jobless recovery" under Bush, haven't you? 4.5-6% unemployment is NOT Full Employment, but whatever. Believe what you will - you are only one vote.
Drunken Sailor| 6.22.12 @ 12:55PM
I know this is math and all but isn't 4.5-6% unemployment better than the 8+% we are currently in? And that's not even counting all the people that have fallen off the charts and are no longer counted.
Doctor Right| 6.22.12 @ 1:07PM
To a Liberal, 5% unemployment under a GOP President is BAD, BAD, BAD!!! People are starving!!! It's ARMAGEDDON!!!
But 8% unemployment under Obama = "Things are looking better!"
That's because Liberals are ill-informed fools.
EVERYTHING they think they know is a lie.
Doctor Right| 6.22.12 @ 1:04PM
You're confused.
"Jobless recovery" was a term used by Obama to describe his inability to understand Economics 101. It was NEVER spoken during Bush's Presidency.
Additionally, Dummy...there is actually no such thing as "FULL employment." There will always be a certain amount of people changing jobs/retiring/moving, etc.
FYI, Dimwit...that number is universally assumed to be...5%!!!
So when we have 5% unemployment, we actually have "FULL employment."

The real U3 is 11% per Jimmy Pethokoukis at AEI. The real U6 is probably in the 20% range.
But that still doesn't count all the people forced into retirement or the 99 weeks of unemployment that elapsed and they are now collecting Social Security Disability.

BS Biology, Graduated Cum Laude (that means "With Honors").
MBA in International Business, which naturally included a heavy emphasis on something called "Economics."
I've spent considerable time living and working overseas (Europe, Australia).

OK...Your turn!!!

"Simma cum laude"? Is that similar to calling ya boy a LAW PROFESSOR? Hell, that's like claiming that Sharpton and Jackson are religious ministers. Ya boy has had his former law license non-renewed/eliminated by the state of Illinois, but I guess you don't need one of those to have your radical friends ghost-author DREAMS, huh???????
Purp| 6.22.12 @ 2:27PM
Wow you should be so smart ... apparently like the absent-minded professor - since you fall for the right-wing propaganda junk?
I have been in the professional ranks (requires advanced degrees) most of my life and run a couple of businesses. Why in the world are you right-wing? You surely can see through their lies, deceit and misinformation. I'm surprised, but I don't blame the lower uneducated types for being manipulated by propaganda - but you? Can you explain why?
Doctor Right| 6.22.12 @ 4:29PM
I am smart.
That's why I'm Conservative. I "get" things.
Maybe you should run your business empire the way you want the country to be run.
You'd be out-of-business in a week.
Or maybe you already are...which is why you love Obama.
I don't see how any thinking person, especially a man, can be a Liberal.

It's also contrary to logic, history, and experience...and really, really dumb.
But I guess it works for you?
Purp| 6.23.12 @ 11:29AM
then you must believe that Conservatism is the opposite, the masculinization of the political. Is that what it is? Some men are afraid they are not Macho enough, so they have to be Republican, in the "Daddy Party", or they'll be called pansies or fags?
What a great reason to be Republican. "I'm no fag, I'm Republican" ... Hmmmm, Rep. "what are you wearing page boy? Mark Foley anyone? Ted Haggart? Senator "Wide Stance" Larry Craig?

Purp| 6.24.12 @ 4:58PM
Ok Fart - what is Keynesian Economics? Where and how has it been successful?
Then tell us what & where Hayek's Economic Philosophy has been implemented and how successful it is?
Oldefarte| 6.24.12 @ 9:28PM
'....Following World War II, one major economic question dealt with the appropriate role for government in the economy. John Maynard Keynes, an English economist, developed theories that called for a large role for government in the economy. Daniel Yergin and Joseph Stanislaw (1998), explain Keynes' argument in this way: "The government would borrow money to spend on such things as public works; and that deficit spending, in turn, would create jobs and increase purchasing power. Striving to balance the government's budget during a slump would make things worse, not better. Keynes's analysis laid the basis for the field of macroeconomics, which treats the economy as a whole and focuses on government's use of fiscal policy--spending, deficits, and tax. These tools could be used to manage aggregate demand and thus ensure full employment.....Keynes' views on economics were challenged by Friedrich von Hayek who argued that "The problem was that under central planning, there was no economic calculation--no way to make a rational decision to put this resource here or buy that good there, because there was no price system to weigh the alternatives." Central planners could make technical decisions but not economic ones. Over the rest of the century, that criticism would prove to be extraordinarily prescient......To Hayek, less government intervention meant more economic freedom. He believed that when people are free to choose, the economy runs more efficiently......'
Oldefarte| 6.24.12 @ 9:34PM
And the above, excrement-head is why Keynesian based economies of Spain, Italy, Greece etc are now economically failing and requiring financial bailouts from Hayek oriented Germany etc......and also why you're a DUMBARS!!!!
Oldefarte| 6.23.12 @ 1:10PM

According to ya boy, but according to reality 20%+ are unemployed. Ya boy controls the BLS, dummie!!!!!!!!!
Purp| 6.23.12 @ 11:33AM
Yeah, and there were more unemployed than registered under Bush, so what? Did you care then?
Oldefarte| 6.23.12 @ 1:22PM
The unemployment rate under Bush was approximately 6-7% but under ya boy is 20% plus [we are now in a full scale depression thanks to his H&C crapola of governmental employment practices to benefit the labor unions so that Democrats can stay in power. The asinine correlation sadly is that governmental employment and welfare has increased under his mandated stupidity!!!!!!!!
Purp| 6.23.12 @ 8:23PM
You do know that the unemployment rate was 8% when Obama took office after Bush left the economy in shambles, and climbed to 10.2% until Obama's policies reversed it? You do know that, right?
Oldefarte| 6.23.12 @ 11:15PM
Is 20% a REVERSAL of 8% idiot? Do you know why it's now 20% idiot? Do you know what non-stimulus and welfarecare legislations are idiot? Do you know what excessive governmental regulations are idiot? Do you know what threats of excessive taxiation are idiot? Do you know what ignoring illegal immigration law enforcement is idiot? Do you know what regulated non-issuance of oil drilling and coal mining permits are idiot? Can you read, think and rationally understand the truth idiot????????????????????????????

Nancy in NC| 6.22.12 @ 7:37AM
Romney needs to take off the mittens and get tough. Call out this whiner in chief.
For example, use Maobama's own tactics against him. He loves to talk about fairness. I would talk about the unfairness of those who break in front of the line of immigration. After all there are over 4 million people waiting to get into this country legally, and have put money on the line to do so. Maobama loves to use class envy...how about the unfairness of waiting in the grocery line only to have some thug break into the line?
Personalize those stories. Tell about the families that are separated for years on end, trying to do the right thing, the legal way.
Personalize the people that have been out of work for a couple of years and desperately want a job. Tell about college graduates working at McDonalds just to be able to tell their children they are working.
Insteal of appealing to people's lowest instincts, appeal to their goodness and decency.
Maobama has given Romney so much ammunition to work with. All he has to do is pick up the pieces and run with it.
Doctor Right| 6.22.12 @ 7:51AM
It's June. Relax.
And Romney's team has been counter-punching Obama for weeks. And scoring points, too.
I don't know how Romney acquired this reputation as a softie. He ripped into Newt and Santorum during the primaries, and he's going to land many hard shots on the target-rich environment known as "Obama."
Bob Grant| 6.22.12 @ 9:09AM
D.R.,
I don't see Romney as a softie either. He played extreme hardball with his fellow republicans during the primaries in '08 and '12.
My, how many of us have selective amnesia!
I also like the way he defended those people who interrupted David Axlerod's MA speech an few weeks ago and obama's speech last week. It appears he's incorporating Alynsky tactics in his campaign.
Face it, he's been running for president for 6+ years. He apparently WANTS IT!!
Softie?...I don't think so.
Purp| 6.22.12 @ 9:40AM
No, just a LOSER
Doctor Right| 6.22.12 @ 10:28AM
What will you call im after he kicks Obowma's ass in November..?
Other than "President-Elect Romney," I mean?
You inhabit a fantasy world of little libby soundbites and talking-points. You know NOTHING about what you speak, as evidenced by your inability to respond to one of several queries I posed to you the other day about basic economics.
You ignorant little punks are one of the biggest problems our country faces today. You're full of outrage and indignation but completely lacking in insight, experience, and basic facts. And you're ignorance makes you susceptible to cute l'il catchphrases like "Bush lied, people died," or "Hope and Change" (LOL on that last one! How's that hope-n-change workin' out for ya?)
Unfortunately for you dim-wits, the rest of the country is buying the nonsense the left pedals anymore.
Enjoy the last 4 months of your commie-socialist-muslim-non-citizen's pathetic reign.
Purp| 6.22.12 @ 11:01AM
I inhabit the world of facts, not spin. Unfortunately, for your kind, you are motivated by beliefs, not facts. But facts will kill you ever time. Both Ohio and Florida have increasingly better even better economies than the national averages under Obama, and he will be handsomely rewarded for the successes there. For Romney, it's game over if he loses either State. In both States, the Governors are a drag on the Republican ticket, so I wouldn't count my chickens if I were you. Richie is a LOSER.
Doctor Right| 6.22.12 @ 12:53PM
Which facts would those be?
Romney will win Ohio AND Florida.
Bank on it.
I actually feel sorry for you. You REALLY believe that Obama is a smart, accomplished, intelligent guy who is equipped to handle the burdens of leadership and economic downturns.
In short, you're a drone.
Drunken Sailor| 6.22.12 @ 12:57PM
Dr.
Give Purp a break. Remember he works in the insurance industry and is in a panic over the fact that Obamacare stand a better than even chance of being overturned. Hell, purp may have to actually work for a living.

He actually has a job?
Funny...he writes like a 19-year old college student.
Drunken Sailor| 6.22.12 @ 2:19PM
That is his primary job. Now do you see his problem? He is in a panic because he sees Obama losing steam. With Obama out of office he will have to go back to actually working in the insurance field instead of being a professional lefty troll.

Obama - he's already proven himself - he has kept us safe for 4 years - isn't that the #1 job for the President in your world? What gives you that confidence that Romney will answer the 3 am call? He'll delegate to his phone valet.
Under Bush the economy crashed badly into a Depression, and under Obama is has come back almost to where it was. Not bad for a first term.
The name calling is unnecessary, unless you have no arguments left, factual or non-factual. I see it as pointless, even tho I catch myself falling for it too.
CJW| 6.22.12 @ 2:40PM
Tell Mr. and Mrs. Terry that Obama kept their son, Brian Terry, safe. Tell the families of the hundreds of dead Mexicans killed by the guns supplied by the Obama regime. Tell the families of the Americans killed in Afghanistan and Iraq why died since Obama has declared defeat and is withdrawing.
Purp| 6.23.12 @ 11:36AM
CJ - Ask Mr. Bush about it - he started the secret pgm in 2006, and both of the wars.
Alan| 6.23.12 @ 1:10PM
No Idiot, Bush's program was a GUN TRACING program set up with the cooperation of the Mexican Government that involved putting tracking devices into the weapons to track their movement. The program was called Wide Receiver. It turned out that it was a failure and it was stopped and terminated in 2007, two year before the communist started his scheme. One had nothing to do with the other so drop the Bush started it bullshit, this gun walking scheme was your fearless leaders project from start to finish and the blood is on his hands and nobody elses.
Purp| 6.23.12 @ 8:27PM
Alan, you are wrong. One pgm fed into the other, and both were to trace guns to the Mexican cartel buyers to get the "Big Fish". It was ill-conceived by the Bush Administration, kept under wraps by the AZ ATF and they admitted to Congress that they didn't inform the Obama administration it was going on, until Terry was killed. It was summarily ended by Eric Holder.
The Blood is Bush's to enjoy, just like the 4000+ dead in Iraq and the 3200 dead on 9/11 while Bush was asleep at the switch. He didn't want to "swat at flies" when he had Saddam in his sights.

Purp| 6.23.12 @ 8:28PM

Obama and Holder's executive privilige stonewalling is a gift for the campaign. Obama is not a good campaigner, he looks angry and confused. He thought this would be another cakewalk with another weak campaigner like McCain.
Romney has responded to all of Obama's charges and knows to keep quiet as Obama self destructs.
If Romney gets a Rep Congress and cuts tax rates and the deficit, allows drilling for oil, and appoints conservative judges to the Supreme Court, he will accomplish close to Reagan.

Doctor Right| 6.22.12 @ 10:36AM
It's not that hard to do, actually.
A great deal of our fellow citizens are lazy, worthless slobs who'd vote for anyone offering them free Big Gulps.
Among the rest are greedy union pigs, radical feminists who care only about the "right" to kill unborn children, various members of the racial/ethnic grievance-class who think that their failure to succeed is always some white guy's fault, scum-bag trial lawyers, psychotic Hollywood narcissists, dumb college students, scared retirees who think Republicans want to steal their soup and dentu-creme, teachers who can't teach, and worthless public employees.
That's a sizable portion of the electorate that's stuck in the Dem's camp - permanently.
An orange juice can with a "D" after his name would get those votes in election after election.
Purp| 6.22.12 @ 11:09AM
After reading your kill list, can you describe any workers, students or even just Americans that you LIKE?
Most of the people in this country on the public dole are the rural people of the RED states. Is that who you mean to degrade?
Doctor Right| 6.22.12 @ 1:20PM
Sure!
I like anyone of any race, creed, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual preference, eye color, hair color, sports team, etc, who believes that the proper role of Government is to stay out of our lives, and who also does NOT believe that they have a God-given right to pick my pocket in order to support their lifestyle.
That leaves out the people whom I listed above.
In short...I like people who aren't Libs.
But I even like some of them!
Purp| 6.22.12 @ 2:46PM
I actually like a lot of Republicans and Conservatives too. I just think they are ill-informed. Government should stay out of lives, but you don't really believe that do you? All you rail against is taxation, and that's just too bad if you are going to live in a modern society. You will NEVER pay only for taxes you agree with. NEVER! And that is all spectrums of government other than perhaps true libertarian, who believe in almost no government at all. They say 100 Billion dollars should be all that's needed to run the entire government. That wouldn't even pay for the defense department.
So, my friend, taxes are here to stay. That shipped sailed a long, long time ago.
Now for keeping government out of my bedroom, who I can marry, what I do with my body, what I can smoke or drink, how I drive, and where I can live. You okay with keeping government out of all of that?
Oldefarte| 6.22.12 @ 4:00PM
No problem with taxiation, you say? Well consider this then, fool.......YOU and YOUR GENERATION WILL BE PAYING THOSE TAXES. Not my generation, since we've worked our butts off and paid more than our fair share of same. Now it's your turn, so add ya boy's desire for more taxiation to your $billions in college tuition loan payments, the lack of affordable housing, a non-existent stock market etc AND IT'S ALL YOU AND YOURS......SO ENJOY AND THANK THE BARRY'S FOR YOUR FINANCIAL BURDEN IN LIFE, OKAY?????????
Purp| 6.23.12 @ 11:42AM
Fart - your generation has run up 16 Trillion in debt. And most of it (10T) from Republican Presidents.
Oldefarte| 6.23.12 @ 1:39PM
No stupid, not my generation.....it's called the Democratic Party which was in control of this nation's government, dumbars. It's the government that runs up defecits/debt that is the discussion here, not that of private individuals. Republican presidents don't mean squat when congress is controlled by liberals and Democrats and their agenda is providing governmental welfare to indigents that has to be repaid by taxpayers. Don't be a dumbars!!!!
Doctor Right| 6.22.12 @ 4:42PM
This country survived for almost 150 years without a Federal income tax, genius.
And when it was introduced, the rate was 3%...and the politicians promised it would never go higher.
And please...let's not compare taxation with your personal proclivities.
Frankly, most Conservatives, myself included, could care less what you do with your genitals, or who you do it with.
What we object to is when you insist on using the heavy hand of government to make us subsidize your "lifestyle," or force us to philosophically accept it.
As far as marriage is concerned...there's nothing stopping you from marrying the woman you love as long as she loves you, too.
Purp| 6.23.12 @ 11:44AM
Try it today without income tax, and you'll have a drone up your a** in no time. Or New York will become part of New Yorkistan. Idiot.
But if I want to marry a man - why can't I? Jesus still loves me and God accepts me. Why can't you? Are you better than they are?
Oldefarte| 6.23.12 @ 1:45PM
You can immorally fornicate with a man if you wish, just don't term it MARRIAGE [which is a sacrament instituted by G-d between a man and a woman in order to propagate the earth]. No, Jesus does not love you and G-d does not accept you [and you will realize same at your death when the trap door opens beneath your feet]. Oh and if you also wish to marry your German Shepard, that's impossible as well!!!!
Purp| 6.23.12 @ 8:33PM
Show me in the Bible where it says "Marriage is between a man and a woman". Or that a woman cannot be ordained a priest. Or that you shouldn't eat Fish on Friday or dozens of other Church dogma invented by old men in robes to control the people.

Me? I don't wish to kill anyone, BUT I do wish to de-link my current financial burden from same through governmental taxiation. If college students wish to increase their STUPIDITY by voting for ya boy's liberal governmental welfare increases, then they had better get their heads out of their anul cavities and understand that THEIR INCOME TAXES will pay for same. If dumbars workers support labor unions, they should realize that same results in manufacturing etc jobs being outsourced by corporations to India and China. As Forrest said, STUPID IS......!!!!!!!!!
Occam's Tool| 6.22.12 @ 6:55PM
Social Security is listed as Welfare, by that definition that I looked at.
Oldefarte| 6.23.12 @ 1:50PM
That defination is incorrect and false. SS recipients PAID FOR their measly retirement benefit through lifetime payroll deductions until 65. Same with Medicare. What is welfare is MEDICAID that requires no payment from its recipients and has no age requirement for receipt of benefits. Of course if Medicaid was completely de-funded, many physicians would have to go on welfare no doubt!!!!!!!!!
Bob Grant| 6.22.12 @ 8:39AM
I would argue Romney is the most articulate republican nominee since Nixon.
Sure, Reagan connected to people much better but was more plainspoken. And that style obviously worked well for him. Romney is not plainspoken. He sounds more like a corporate lawyer, which COULD BE as effective as Reagan's style.
Who else ?
Ford?...With all due respect, I'm looking at a wooden credenza with more personality and communication skills
Bush 41? ... With all due respect, a sub-par communicator
Bob Dole?....See Gerald Ford
GW Bush...With all due respect, he was the most inarticulate president in my lifetime and that fact alone hurt his presidency to a large degree. I think deep down he knew this as well which prevented him from pushing his agenda more forcefully
John McCain...With all due respect, he was right down there with Ford and Bush; perhaps below
So, let's give credit to Romney for at least having this positive trait. Maybe he can enlist a top notch speech writer and communications guru - ala Peggy Noonan - to put him over the top.
Appleby| 6.22.12 @ 8:47AM
Since NIXON? Are you old enough to remember where NIXON ENDED UP? And that thanks only to a merciful God, we didn't end up with SPIRO AGNEW as President?
Yes, Obama is a nightmare, but think of the alternatives!
P.S. For all of you guessing who the VP nominee will be, think "life insurance." Romney will not pick anybody that a p erson of sense would want running the country, because by doing so he would be painting a big fat target on his back. Why do you think Obama clings to Biden? Same reason.
Bob Grant| 6.22.12 @ 8:48AM

Nixon had the choice of Ford or Goldwater to replace Agnew. He thought by choosing Ford the DEMs would leave him alone. Now a Goldwater succession, that would have sent fear into their lefty hearts. Nixon, picking Goldwater, would have finished his term. The DEMs like republicans, they fear Conservatives.
CJW| 6.22.12 @ 1:03PM
Great point, Al. Goldwater would have been approved by the House.
CJW| 6.22.12 @ 1:01PM
Spiro Agnew would have been an improvement over Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Obama. Spiro took his cash directly from the Maryland contractors as was the practice. He should have sold pardons like Clinton, or established a library like Clinton, or have a Rezko give him land, as a substitute for the cash.
Agnew would not have created an Energy and Educaton dept like Carter. Agnew would have supported the Shah in Iran so we would not have had a terrorrist state since 1979, and Agnew would certainly not send guns to Mexico that killed an American and hundreds of Mexicans.
Stay and vote in Canada, Appleby.

Well, I was going to post a reply, but forgot to take my cymbalta and spent three hours attempting to work out phrasing that was both evocative, staccato, florid, double-layered, simultaneously percussive also…...

I was in the large crowd in Holland State Park, in - ta-da - Holland, Michigan, last Tuesday; the "Every Town Counts" tour. It was hot. I was carrying my two-year-old grandson so he wouldn't get lost in the crowd. Did I write it was hot? We waited and listened to our Representative to Congress speak for near fifteen-minutes - then Mr. Romney and his wife, for a few minutes, took to the podium. He was on fire and the audience fed the flames. Mr. Romney was in his own and delivering the thirty-minuet message like a circuit preacher. Mr. Romney didn't use the podium. He didn't use a teleprompter. He used the stage, his words, and gestures to belt out his epistle. My grandson watched and listened. There were a few protesters, but they were very quiet. We outnumbered them by at least 250-to-1. If he keeps this up to November, I will not worry.
Also, Maobama's Jay Gatsby's life story is starting to unravel.
Everyone have a safe weekend.

I was in Santorum's camp during the primaries, but now that they are over I am 100% on the Romney bandwagon. I hope he'll win, and I'm sure he will too. That being said, will someone on his staff PLEASE tell him No More Singing? I was aghast when he sang America the Beautiful (a great song, but lousy delivery) and I won't even mention the Davy Crockett moment. Stick with your strengths, dude. Just because Obama can channel Al Greene doesn't compel you to try the same thing. And another thing, please no more of his dorky sons in the background with their huge teeth bared. And slow down when you talk, find a natural rhythm and relax.

I think his off handed goofiness is actually an asset.

Romney will do just fine, because he actually knows what he is talking about. Obama can only talk on script. His cadence is always the same - the voice rises at the end of every sentence. ( I wonder if the same happens when he asks Michelle for a cup of oc coffee? When you have nothing of substance to say, or you don't know what you are talking about, you need a script.
Anyone who talks for a living - salesmen, trial lawyers, engineers - know that preparation and knowledge are the key to a coherent, flowing talk. Everytime our fearless leader is caught in a candid moment, he stutters, or makes a fool of himself. The only time he speaks without a script, and is fluent, is when he is talking from his heart. These moments are usually a disaster, because his heart is in a socialist world, and his passion is the denigration of the culture, and freedons of this country.

Unintentionally funny comment of the day. Burp accusing others of being brainwashed. Puberty can't come too soon eh Burp? By the way, what's it like in that parallel universe of yours? At least on this site, Republicans don't always get a free pass. But in your own little lala land, Obama's economy is thriving. Can you say cuckoo for cocoa puffs?

How to thread the needle?
As I ponder walking in Romney’s shoes, in his quest for president of the 50 states of America, my mind boggles. The detailed list of specific issues, both domestic and foreign, must run into the hundreds. Then, there are the thousands of powerful people in all the states to take into account.
How to make as many voters happy enough to vote for him as possible? So many simultaneous non-linear “equations” to solve! And, then, there are the daily happenings, as they morph into crises, and demand attention.
The NBA finals just ended. With Miami leading 2-1, game 4 was crucial. At the very end, with the game tied, Oklahoma City totally choked—a dribble off the foot, forced into bad shots by lesser players, etc. The Heat won 4-1, and it will always look like they were much better than the Thunder.
However, talent wise, it’s not like the Heat was four times better than OKC.
What about the Presidential “Finals”?
Romney has more “talent”. Obama is a “pretender”, who lucked out in 2008.
Mitt just has to make his shots, which he should work hard to make easy lay ups and/or open 3-pointers, while playing solid defense.
Above all, NO unforced errors, and he’ll stomp Obama.
BHO must be badly beaten, so the left can’t complain after the election!

No, I think the Republicans could put forth a ham sandwich against this non-POTUS this time and win. I thought that McCain would win in 2008 also, but I over-estimated the STUPIDITY of the American voters sadly. Forrest Gump was right about that. Now, there's no escaping reality and truth. It is what it is, and the H&C bullexcrement won't wash anymore. Unemployment is officially at 8% and more realistically like 20%; the housing industry in in the crapper; the stock market is non-existent; the job market for college graduates is fast-food at best; illegals are pouring over the border in droves; gasoline prices are declining through political manipulation but will explode if the STUPIDS re-elect their version of JC; the middle east is politically being turned into one large Iran with an ever-increasing Muslim terrorism threat from same; etc. Nah, Rush or someone opined that survey-polled respondents claimed to like this POTUS personally etc out of not wanting to appear racist, but within the privacy of the voting booth would express their true feelings, which I think is the case. Romney will win by a landslide, with only the east and west coasts going for Obama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dilbert| 6.22.12 @ 4:40PM
Romney has the money, now he wants the power! How did the Republican Party ever let this clown in? When Republicans get standards, I will vote for them again.
One thing about Romney; he is on both sides of the argument!
I will concentrate on getting conservative congressmen elected,to keep whoever wins in check.
Oldefarte| 6.23.12 @ 1:53PM
'A Clown'? Try researching Obama, Pilosi, Reid, Schumer, Frank, Durbin, Waters, Lee, Jackson, etc for a start. If you get beyond those, I'll add to the listing!!!!!!!

Like I have stated before, Romney will the election not because Romney is so good, but because Obama is so bad. So what does that say about Romney.. exactly.. Romney is neither conservative, nor inspiring. He is to say the least another false hope like Obama.
Compare this election to the 1980 election between Carter and Reagan. Carter was as bad in the public's eye as Obama is now, but Ronald Reagan was not a Mass liberal progressive GOP establishment Republicrat RINO like Romney.
Ronald Reagan was a true conservative. He was highly educated in constitutional conservative politics and philosophy, and understood how to communicate to the people about the values and principles that we the majority, the conservatives hold dear, and why we adhere to them, and why we must ensure that Individual Freedom, Liberty, and Democracy never dies, by electing good candidates who represent and practice these values and principles, without sacrificing their principles that is wrapped in the guise of compromise.
For those GOP establishment RINOs who think that being moderate means compromising every piece of the Bill of Rights away from the People is a good thing, just to appease the liberal Democrats and play collusion footsy with them to maintain their little world of elitist political power in Washington DC, we have news for you at the ballot boxes.
Oldefarte| 6.23.12 @ 11:23PM
You stupid sack of excrement! That's the largest pile of horse manure possible. GM owes $billions of money to the government and will never repay same. All of the banks have now repaid their loans WITH INTEREST TO TAXPAYERS. Chrysler was sold to Fiat which will also never repay their loans. The auto bailouts were a taxpayer funded gift to the labor unions so that their workers wouldn't become unemployed, and were not essential to the national security interests as was the original TARP intended solely for the major banks in order to prevent a total collapse of our financial system and economy. you lie worse that Hillbilly Bill, but not as much as Barry [no one can out-lie that tojun-horsed POTUS]!!!!!!
Toinfinityandbeyond| 6.24.12 @ 1:58AM
I wonder why Romney's three sons used "surrogates" to have babies? What's wrong with them? Do they already have sister wives?
Toinfinityandbeyond| 6.24.12 @ 2:02AM
I don't understand people who blame President Obama for saving US Auto Industry.
Can you imagine if GM and Chrysler are owned by China now?
We now have huge pride for US Auto Industry, because it was saved and still they are US Auto Industry.
Just like children's education and US Auto Industry, there are something worth investing for.
Oldefarte| 6.24.12 @ 10:33AM
BS! It was a taxpayer gift to the labor unions so that Detroit workers would not lose their jobs. If properly handled, Detroit's manufactures should have been allowed to either go bankrupt or better to be bought out by Japan [Toyota etc], which would have produced NON-UNIONIZED car manufacturing in this country totally. The workers' jobs would have been saved [but their wages etc would have been converted to non-unionized status] and the taxpayers would not have suffered the $billions in losses [and GM's bondholders would have not lost their entire investments] in the process. No it wasn't a good thing in any way shape or form, but instead of a political payoff to labor unions!!!!!!!!!
