Another Perspective

The Winner of Our Discontent

Time to stop descanting on Romney’s deformities and focus on Obama’s inductions dangerous.

Conservatives are queasy about Mitt Romney, and with good reason. Questions remain about his commitment to, and even his comprehension of, conservatism. He has been distressingly flexible on principles most of us hold sacrosanct and openly admits that, as a young man, he would not have known any better had he been told that Burke and Hayek were “infielders for the Detroit Tigers.” Moreover, Romney’s role in foisting “universal health coverage” on the hapless taxpayers of Massachusetts renders him less than credible as an opponent of Obamacare. Nonetheless, in the absence of some truly bizarre turn of events, he will win the Republican presidential nomination this year. This means he will be the only thing standing between us and four more years of Barack Obama’s incompetence, corruption, and contempt for the Constitution.

Thus, conservatives have a choice: get behind Romney in his quest to evict Barack Obama from the White House or impale ourselves on our principles. The latter course, I’m afraid, is what some conservatives are advocating. American Spectator alumnus Philip Klein, for example, advises in Conservative Survival in the Romney Era that “conservatives will need to exert pressure from the right so that Romney will run as a conservative.” I respect Klein, and usually agree with him, but such reasoning is hopelessly naïve. It is the kind of thinking employed by some brides-to-be who believe they can cure the character flaws of their prospective spouses once the marriage ceremony is out of the way. Romney is simply not a movement conservative and no amount of hectoring from the right will cause him to run his campaign or govern like one.

Moreover, as Bill Kristol wrote a couple of weeks ago, it would be a mistake for Romney to even make the attempt: “Indeed, he probably has a better chance to win if he relaxes and runs as himself. Most candidates aren’t very good at trying to be what they’re not.” It is certainly true that, as Klein writes in his eBook, “Romney is a bitter pill to swallow for many of us conservatives.” It is also true that we are tired of having to “hold our noses” while we vote for ideologically inconsistent Republican candidates. But he goes on to point out a much more important reality: “we recognize the urgent need for a new president.” Well, if conservatives take Klein’s advice and join the Obama reelection team, the “news” media, and the long list of Democrat front groups in their chorus of Romney criticism, it can only reduce the chances that we will get “a new president.”

We have seen this movie before. While it would be unfair to place all the blame for the GOP debacles of 2006 and 2008 on conservative kvetching, there can be little doubt that it contributed to those losses. During the run-up to the 2006 disaster, Bruce Bartlett published Impostor: How George W. Bush Bankrupted America and Betrayed the Reagan Legacy and Peggy Noonan wrote a column in which she speculated that losing Congress might somehow be redemptive for the GOP. Noonan and a variety of other conservatives published similar works of genius about the heresies of John McCain during the 2008 election cycle and, collectively, they converted tepid enthusiasm into something close to despair. Ultimately, congressional Republicans and John McCain are responsible for their own defeats, of course, but conservative grumbling contributed to these losses.

In his eBook, Klein anticipates such arguments and attempts to counter them as follows: “In the coming months, those of us who criticize Romney from the right will be told we should save it until after November, or else we’re just helping Obama.… Eventually, it will be that we can’t weaken him before the midterm elections, and then later, that we have to loudly support him, or else he’ll lose reelection to an even worse liberal boogeyman (or boogeywoman) in 2016.” But this year, the price of undermining Romney will be far higher than the cost incurred by similar behavior in 2006 or 2008. To coin a phrase, this really is “the most important election in our lifetime.” Four more years of Obama, unfettered by concerns about reelection, would be an unmitigated disaster for the nation and the world.

Klein writes, in the penultimate paragraph of Conservative Survival in the Romney Era, “[T]he long-term debate is moving in conservatives’ direction. This makes it all the more important that conservatives avoid letting their brand become corrupted as part of a short-term desire to beat Obama.” The problem with this reasoning is that an Obama victory in November will not be a “short-term” loss. The President isn’t merely incompetent — he is dangerous. His fiscal policies, based on an economic theory mugged by reality every time it has been tested in the real world, are virtually certain to produce another Great Depression. And his feckless foreign policy will result in an increasingly belligerent Iran armed with nuclear weapons, which it will use to gain hegemony over the entire Middle East and possibly perpetrate another holocaust.

Thus, for the good of the nation and the world, Obama must be sent back to Chicago in January. And, for all of Romney’s many faults, no sane conservative disputes that he would be a far better President than “the One.” Romney understands the free enterprise system that drives our economy and believes in American exceptionalism. That he has been dead wrong on some issues and has flip-flopped on others is small beer compared to what Obama will be up to during the next four years if reelected. Conservatives can’t afford the luxury of insisting on ideological purity in 2012. Klein is right to be worried about Mitt Romney, and none of this is to say that conservatives should be gagged until November. However, the “reporters” of the New York Times, Washington Post and the other “news” media will be blazing away at Romney for the next six months. There is no need for conservatives to hand them ammunition.

Romney is the great white hope

Jack in Wi.| 5.29.12 @ 7:24AM

The picture of Romney and McCain above says it all. Why would any conservative listen to Bill Kristol? Romney deserves to go down to huge defeat if he does not strangle and kick out all those Neocons hanging around his campaign. These wars are a huge disaser. The voters want out of them and no more attacks on other countries. The country is broke and our troops have been fighting senseless wars for over a decade. Wars and Neocons are a recipe for disaster. Romney moves toward the peace party, or he moves toward the asheap of history. Then we have to worry about Romney and his domestic policy. Oy vey.

Bill| 5.29.12 @ 10:37AM

Mc Cain, would get us in Syria and back into Afganistan and Iraq and bomb Iran. All while our real threat is here in the US.

Oldefarte| 5.29.12 @ 11:58AM

Bomb Iran? Maybe that is exactly what is needed. Maybe we should completely remove all of our military personnel from the ME, and thereafter load up each and every B-52 and Stealth and direct them to the deserts of same as a warning of never again to attempt to carry out another 9/11 against us?????????

TLP| 5.29.12 @ 12:18PM

I'll say it, again.......Some people seem to, not only wanna Cut off their Noss to Spite their Faces, but Blow off their Heads, to Spite their Hats.

You didn't get your guy. He's not as (fill in the blank) as I'd like him to be. HE'S NOT PERFECT, like me.

We can't do 4 More Years of The Muslim. We won't survive another Term of a THING that has as his only goal, the utter Destruction of the United States of America.

Everything he does, is anathema to our Founding Principles. Everything he says, is a POS Lie. Everyone he surrounds himself with is either a Muslim, a Communist, a Marxist, a Maoist, an Anarchist, an Jew Hater, or an America Hater.

Name ONE ALLY that Trusts us. Name ONE ENEMY that Fears us.

We don't go to Space, anymore. Think about that. We can't put a Drill in the ground, anymore, and capture our own Energy Resources on Federal Lands.

He's using His EPA to Shut Down Coal. He's using His IRS to Confiscate Family Farms. He's SLAUGHTERING Farmer's Livestock. He's using His Interior Department to Shut Down Mining for Ores and Minerals. He's using His Fish and Wildlife Department to go after Fishermen. He used his Energy Secretary, and his Interior Secretary to Forge Documents, and put in place an ILLEGAL Drilling Moratorium.

And, in his Quest to take away our 2nd Amendment Right to Arm Ourselves against HIM? He has used his "Blacks Only" Justice Department to run Guns to the Mexican Drug Cartels, in an effort to KILL as many Mexican men, women, and children as possible, and then be able to point to the fact that these guns were Bought in America, and Walked over the Border. Yeah. By HIM!

I'm 54. This is NOT the Country I was born in. It's not the Country I grew up in.

The United States of America needs those DRUNKS in Russia, to get its people in to Space?

The United States is the Biggest Debtor Nation on the Planet?

The United States has a White Hating, Jew Hating, America Hating, MARXIST in the Oval Office?

America has a man with all of his Pertinent Personal Documentation Sealed in a Vault, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and nobody seems to want to see it, even though TWICE, when he was running for Office, in Illinois, he had a Judge UNSEAL his Opponents "SEALED DOCUMENTS". We're talking about the Biggest News Story in the History of the United States of America, and yet, NO-ONE wants to write it. Besides, the other guy was a Bully 47 Years ago, and he won't release every Tax Return he's ever gotten in his entire life.

If The Muslim gets 4 more years, there will be no-one to stop him from finishing us off. As I've already written, the Press, and the Media can See No Evil, when it comes to their boy. The Republican Leadership, in Congress, cares more about their sweet Offices, their primo Parking Spaces, and their Key to their Luxury Toilet, than they do with getting things done.

No matter what, he's gotta go.

I have always hoped that someone in the Secret Service would Step Up, and fulfill his or her Oath to Protect and Defend the Constitution of the United States of America, from all Enemies, both Foreign and DOMESTIC.

(He has people from The Muslim Brotherhood, in sensitive positions, throughout his Administration. They're in positions at TSA, Homeland Security, and the Department of Defence.)

I always thought that the Secret Service would recognize the Domestic Enemy, when he produced himself. I always thought that they would accept their responsibility of being our First Line of Defence, against any would be Nero or Caligula or Mao or Hitler. I thought that they knew that Protecting the President was just their job. Their OATH is to the Constitution, just as the Roman Praetorian Guard were charged with the Protection of the Emperor, but their ALLEGIANCE was to The Empire, sometimes, to the detriment of the Emperor of the Day.

But, I digress.

This is where we are. You can take the Red Pill, and fight for your Freedoms, and a return to our American way of life?

Or, you can take the Blue Pill, because the guy running is not Your Guy, he's not Everything you want him to be, and you will be put back in to the Machine where you can live out your life as a member of a Group, living a life of Servitude to the Ruling Class, and Reminiscing about the days when America was a Superpower, and Countries feared, and idolized us, at the same time. And we could live our lives free of the Oppressive Yoke of an All Encompassing, All Powerful, Central Government.

It really is, just that simple.

Anybody that has a problem with you, TLP, isn't thinking.
But then, they usually aren't.

Vern Crisler| 5.29.12 @ 10:44AM

The problem with this article is that it assumes America deserves to be saved from the likes of Obama. However, by putting him into office in the first place, I think Americans need to suffer another four more years of him. And by nominating another moderate, Republicans deserve to lose again. A price has to be paid for wrong political choices.

Oldefarte| 5.29.12 @ 11:54AM

VC I disagree adamently. This nation will not survive four more years of this domestic terrorism from this POTUS. Look at what he/they have accompolished in 3 1/2 years and extrapolate that to four and possibly eternity. Examine the PRESENT [and I'd suggest a visit to Braitbart.com for a thorough examination] and then try and pontificate that there is no difference between the two candidates for November!!!!

Vern Crisler| 5.29.12 @ 12:26PM

Perhaps this nation doesn't deserve to survive.

TLP| 5.29.12 @ 2:33PM

Just tell him the truth while keeping your cool. Heh, easier said than done, though.
Pray before commenting. While in prayer, begin by thanking Jesus for what He did for you, dying in your place, for your sin.
Every time I do this, I am so humbled by His Spirit, and makes me so thankful inside, that the liars look like little nothings, and to be pitied rather than scorned.

Come back then, in the Strength of His Word. Nothing a can change the fact that YOU belong to HIM!

And then sometimes a vacation is due from posting, that helps at times. :^).

Eph. 6:10. Stay strong, brother.

Only One Mediator Christ Jesus| 5.29.12 @ 12:34PM

Oldefarte,

Vernie here needs to speak for himself.
Those of us who were still in possession of half a brain voted for McCain/Palin. The rest of the imbeciles who didn't care or who were too holy in their own eyes to pull the lever for the Republican nominee are the ones who "deserve" the completion of the destruction of the country by the scum they put in office the first time around.

Men like Vernie here who see fit to be filled with such hatred for their fellow man are too stupid to realize that a vote for the Republican nominee is a vote for the party of Life, rather than the party of Death.

But then again, Paul-bots are warped, anyway.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

~ Edmund Burke.

Quartermaster| 5.29.12 @ 1:11PM

Yeah, vote for the Libtard with an "R" behind his name and all will be OK.

*Every* sane Conservative knows that Mittens is only marginally better than the Kenyan. Sying that he will be much better is an appeal to someing that is not in evidence. The evidence of his time as MassGov says soemthing far different. The man is not only not a movement conservative, he's not conservative at all. He governed as a Libtard in Mass, and he will do so in the WH.

The only reason to vote for teh creep is that we might just get lucky. By itself, that shows just how degraded the country is.

Only One Mediator Christ Jesus| 5.29.12 @ 1:19PM

Never said, all would be OK. I'm not delusional, QM.
What I really DO think is delusional though, is allowing one's vote to go to the Communist party.
But, come on QM~ you KNOW this already.

What I'll be voting for (according to my conscience) is a Republican President with a Republican admin.

And THAT is without a DOUBT far better than a Communist government.

If more conservative got involved in the process to begin with, we wouldn't have this problem.
Convert your friends, family and neighbors.
Or at least try to.
I'm working on mine.

scotchieguy| 5.29.12 @ 2:28PM

Say what you want about Romney, but at least he loves to make money. He seems to love America. He seems to believe in American Exceptionalism. Maybe he will be pushed to the right. Maybe he will pick a true conservative as VP to move the country more rightward in 2016 or 2020.

Only One Mediator Christ Jesus| 5.29.12 @ 2:39PM

Now you're talking!!

spike59| 5.30.12 @ 6:00AM

here's the deal, and it's really quite simple...you can hold your nose and vote for 'Mittens', or you can help ObaMao get re-elected...there is no other option. vote for a 3rd party candidate? that helps ObaMao. Don't vote? that helps ObaMao. write in someone? that helps ObaMao-i can't believe there are people who can actually type who haven't got the brainpower to process that simple concept.

JmsA| 5.29.12 @ 3:14PM

Will due respect, OOM Christ Jesus, that's a great quote, but it doesn't quite fit. The individual you're referring to is far from a good man; he actually sounds like an Obamaite.

scotchieguy| 5.29.12 @ 2:23PM

You mean like the price of losing this country? I don't know who wins in November, but if this fool gets four more years, we are done. Finished. And we ain't getting our country back. Your words are poison. Maybe YOU need to be punished by being a purist, but the rest of us don't deserve that fate.

A Sphincter Says What?| 5.29.12 @ 11:58PM

Vern, I agree with you completely. We have to stop this cycle NOW. And there is really no better time to stand on principle than NOW. Four more years of this A-hole will be disasterous and at the same time start a new round of Americans BEGGING for Conservatism istead of this continuous moderate mediocrity.

And now you want the electorate to vote for another second-rate candidate?

I'm not undermining Romneycare (R), and resent the implication that conservative "griping" is to blame, when it's the inherent weakness of Ruling Class Republican nominees. Romney represents the GOP establishment of K-Street and Wall Street, not conservatism or Main Street.

Look, I'll hold my nose yet again and vote for the guy in November because of Obama -- even though Romney is also a progressive and will take us in the same general direction down the slippery slope of collectivism -- merely because Romney will take us down a meandering path rather than choose Obama's headlong rush straight downhill.

But don't expect me to rally behind a nominee who is also going to take us in the wrong direction, albeit at a less direct route.

Appleby| 5.29.12 @ 7:32AM

There may be some value in Obama as he is so blatant and open about what he is doing that even the other communists can see it now, or are beginning to see it. Perhaps when enough of the Gimmee Generation has its nose rubbed in the ultimate results of his policies, the revolution will turn up a real leader that people can actually follow. Yes, it will be grim and messy and I'm already in the front lines in a country that cannot understand working against the USA is sawing off the branch it's sitting on -- but wouldn't the whole thing be over more quickly if people just stood up and fought back, instead of playing for time?

Just asking.

Only One Mediator Christ Jesus| 5.29.12 @ 12:36PM

Do you punish your dog the same way?

Appleby| 5.29.12 @ 1:32PM

I was taught that actions have consequences. If you continue to accommodate failure, you will continue to get failure. If you show you'll accept the second-rate, you'll continue to get second-rate, and probably they'll try to slip third-rate in on you to see if you'll go lower...and you will.

If you were coaching a football team and you picked your players by holding your nose and settling for anybody who showed up, how successful do you think your career would be? And how long would you have your job?

Only One Mediator Christ Jesus| 5.29.12 @ 1:49PM

Appleby,

You are accommodating EVIL if you help to re-elect Obama.

You want failure? You got it.

aware| 5.29.12 @ 5:25PM

November boils down to either good news for the State or really good news. Bad enough to have a choice this shitty(sorry, but it's the perfect word), but do some of you REALLY have to show the same rabid support for what, just a few months ago, you were attacking? Vote for him if you must, but do you really want to be a "supporter"?

Failure? You got failure all around you. Up to your neck. Failure for a couple of generations, maybe longer. Failure is a fact, we are just arguing about the depth.

Only One Mediator Christ Jesus| 5.29.12 @ 6:03PM

I don't HAVE rabid support for Romney~ my support is actually for voting for him only so that we have a Republican Presidency and admin.

But that's the thing you anarchistic or semi- anarchistic Paul-bots keep trying to say (like vigilant did)~ that we're, "Lecturing those of us who have real problems with Romney like we're ignorant and thick".

No, and we aren't his "rabid supporters", either.
As I said to vigilant, we have the same problems with his not being a conservative too, and all along here not many were backing him, but we were backing Cain, Bachmann, Newt, and mostly hoping Sarah would run!

So to try and paint us as rabid supporters is truly disingenuous, don't you think?

It seems like we're just the adults in the room who understand that the party of Life is a million times better than the party of Death.

That's all.

Lord Howard Hurts | 5.29.12 @ 7:46AM

Patriots. Stand Your Ground!
What stupidity! Obama had his birth certificate posted on the Internet for the entire world to view. Then when asked by "Birthers" to view his original certificate, in the vault, in Hawaii, so as to compare these two documents, they are denied and called "Crazy, Toothless, Hillbilly's". Logic tells a reasonable person that the two documents are not the same, meaning that one is a fraud. Wake Up, Patriots! Demand that Romney not debate with Obama until Obama lets doubters view his original birth certificate, his school records, his selective service information, and his passport information. If Romney should refuse to do this, then the Patriots of this nation need to make it known that they will not vote in the Presidential elections of 2012. Let both the Republicans and Romney hear this: Patriots will let Obama win, and deal with it in their own time.

The "original" is kept in the County Records. What people receive is a "certified copy" which is a duplicate certificate bearing an embossed seal from the County Clerk. This would be sufficient, but O'Bozo has not produced even this. All we have seen from O'Bozo are forgeries. That a forgery should even EXIST is enough to challenge his citizenship status in court. That O'Bozo's own website displayed the forgery should be enough to bring charges. That is, in a civilized country where there is enforceable law. Von Mises Jr| 5.29.12 @ 7:59AM

Romney was not my first choice as GOP Nominee. But because he is not a TEA Party conservative weaned on Burke, Locke, Montesquieu and Hayek does not mean that he is necessarily a U.N. Agenda21 elitist such as George H. W. Bush or like George Bush 43 who gave us "No Child Left Behind," "McCain Feingold" and "Medicare Part D.
We know John McLame was another elitist RINO as he continually stuck his finger in the eyes of conservatives with immigration, campaign finance and big spending, to name a few. But I am holding my criticism of Romney until he tells us or demonstrates that he deserves our scorn.
If that occurs, it will still be better than Obama. The Democrat Leadership in the Congress has admitted that they have not heard from Obama in months. With his "We can't Wait" mantra, does anyone still need to have it explained that we have a de facto dictatorship that must be repudiated?

Oldefarte| 5.29.12 @ 11:49AM

Amen, VM....well stated!!!!!!!!

c. j. acworth| 5.29.12 @ 8:02AM

Ok, ok. We'll have to hold our noses and vote for the RINO again. Now, what can we do about congress? Getting more conservatives into both houses is what will really make the difference. We have to take the Senate, they are the ones who get to confirm SCOTUS appointees.

Mike Rogers | 5.29.12 @ 8:19AM

We'll take Romney and deal with him, compared to Obama, there's no contest, besides, 42% of Democrats prefer Nobody to Obama in recent primaries
Romney is turning out to be a better campaigner than McCain, and may well turn out to be a better debater, too.
However, as pointed out above, we can and must influence the makeup of the Senate, Congress, Governor's offices, and stare houses wherever possible. We need a Senate that will pass a sensible budget, ensure the integrity of the Supreme Court, and avoid treaties which are bad for our security and sovereignty. We need a house which will undo Obamacare and undertake major tax code reform. We need governors who will say "hell no" when presented with unconstitutional Federal laws, and finally, we need state houses that will balance their budgets and tamp down special interests (unionized government workers).

Romney is the right man for the job at hand. We need someone to take an axe to federal spending, and this is the kind of work he has excelled at for an entire career. By the way, I don't think that most members of the Tea Party are "weaned on Burke, Locke, Montesquieu, and Hayek..." They just know that the federal government is out of control and needs to be beaten back. Yikes, some of you folks must be a riot at cocktail parties...

As is the usual case, we have to chose the lesser of two "evils". However, in this case, we have to chose between real evil (Obama the Corrupt) and the non-conservative conservative.

There should be no choice for those who have even an inkling of conservative thought. Romney is the one. If we can get a Congress (Republican or Democrat) that can get back on a Constitutional track then we will be okay.

Derek Leaberry| 5.29.12 @ 9:25AM

The choice is this- 1) A Romney victory, a massive mid-term defeat costing the Republicans Congress in 2014, and a presidential election victory for Andrew Cuomo in 2016 or 2) An Obama victory in 2012, a massive mid-term victory for the Republicans in 2014, and a presidential victory for a conservative in 2016. The choice is easy.

The author clearly paints a terrifying picture of where our nation is going and how it is being dragged to its demise intentionally; by our own politicians. Once you start this book, you will not stop until the last prophetic word has been absorbed and understood. Rarely does a book with such an important message tell the story in such an exciting way. “Old Texican” weaves his accurate research and longtime experiences into a fabric of fiction and high adventure that left me exhausted and trembling. No you're incorrect. An Obama victory in 2012 will result in a complete destruction of this country by the end of 2013, the economic transformation of our captialistic model to a thorough socialistic one [an Arab Spring, American style], and the downsizing of this nation to something resembling Cuba. Thereafter will be no more victories for Republicans in 2014, 2016 or everafter, since the domestic terrorist Democrats whill have completely taken over this country's government and the political power that goes with it [presently these domestic terrorists are SWATTING comservative journalists and businessmen in an attempt to terrorize and intimidate them into not monetarily contributing to the Republican Party or to editorilizing about same. You need to research [on Braitbart.com etc] what is now going on in this country leading up to November and to extrapolate your knowledge of what it will increase to going forward if Obama/Democrats are successful in November. This is WAR, and anyone not understandig same is completely naive and possibly ignorant, and same will result in the destruction of this country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Drunken Sailor| 5.29.12 @ 11:28AM

I think your Crystal ball needs a tune up. Please explain to me how a man we spent 4 years fighting against is going to be LESS aggresive in pursuing his social equality theme when he does not have to worry about running for re-election and fooling the masses?

Does your crystal ball show all of the Supreme Court justices living and stayin on the job 4 more years? Does is show Republicans keeping the house (50/50 shot) and taking the Senate (still a long shot)? Does it show Obama having a sudden change of heart and not abusing his executive powers even if we do control Congress?

Fantasies are wonderful but plans should be made based on realities. And the reality is our country may not survive another 4 years of Obama and with his spending habits we may end up like Greece. Nice Legacy to leave your children.

Even if Romney is only slightly better that at least buys more time to get more conservatives in office and change the direction of our country.

It is very cut and dry.

Derek Leaberry| 5.29.12 @ 2:24PM

First, I bet you five dollars the US exists in 2016 in some form. We are not quite Rome AD 476 although we may be more decadent morally. There are no Goths to sweep away what is left of the "republic".

Replacing Supreme Court judges and other federal judges is about the only reason to vote for Romney. Yet one term of Romney will not see any of the left-wing judges retire. Mr. Breyer is healthy. Mrs. Ginsburg will cling to the Court even if she has to live in a casket inside her quarters at the Court. She only leaves the Court feet horizontal or under a Democrat.

As for the fiscal state of the country, it is now in a state of no return and no serious reform is possible. People want the benefits, especially the entitlements, and any party who votes to streamline the benefits will be destroyed at the polls. The welfare state is reaching its end game and catastrophe looms around the bend.

Drunken Sailor| 5.29.12 @ 3:36PM

I don't want our country to survive "In some form" as you put it. I swore to fight to preserve the form it is in and will continue to do so, unlike those that are willing to give up their freedoms for a chance of getting them back. That is exactly what people like you are doing when you talk about Obama getting re-elected as our salvation.

Fools, ever damn one of you. Blinded by your ideology the same as the Obama drones. We will not turn this goverment around or right it's wrongs in one election. But it appears there are many fools that prefer to win the battle and lose the war.

Drunken Sailor| 5.29.12 @ 3:37PM

No they don't! They have their heads in the sand and their ass in the air. Obama will just line them up and kick them through his socialist goalpost.

Larry| 5.29.12 @ 9:32AM

Philip Klein - 1
David Catron - 0

Klein has offered a cogent, proactive, thinking mans guide for a conservative response to the strange events we now witness.

Catron has instead offered the same predictable "sky is falling"nostrums dispensed by the very corrupt and grasping GOP Establishment which are now regularly treated to.

Will I vote for Romney? Yes. But not in the absence of constant niggling from the right. Romney bullied his way to the nomination in a fashion I've only observed among the Left in 30 years of close observation. He's "earned" nothing.

Why is Klein so right while Catron so wrong? Because the mantra "He's not Obama" is so incomplete as a slogan. It dismisses the enormity of the crisis we face ... it suggests that differences of degree are sufficient responses to what the hour demands.

If Romney loses ... it will not be the fault of conservatives. It will entirely be the fault of Team Romney and the kingmakers of the GOP.

Bill| 5.29.12 @ 10:34AM

Yes, and the same people who blame conservatives for McCains loss will blame conservatives for Romney's loss.

Only One Mediator Christ Jesus| 5.29.12 @ 1:08PM

True that, Bill.

Oldefarte| 5.29.12 @ 11:37AM

No Larry you're wrong. Both Klein and Catron are both right. Conservatives must vote for Romney to save this nation, as it will not survive four more years of Obama. Catron is not saying to abandon your conservative principles, but only to preserve same by a vote for survival through Romney. Develop and run a preferred conservative in 2014/2016 against a POTUS Romney, yes; but if Obama is re-elected, both the Republican Party and conservatism will sink and disappear effectively due to dominance by the domestic terrorism of the socially controlled extremists-liberals in charge!!!!!!

Larry| 5.29.12 @ 12:02PM

oldefarte ... You offer the same failed and, again, predictable reasoning which the Establishment employs regularly. They maneuver the Party into such an untenable choice and then frantically proclaim that the world will end if the Democrats win!

"This is the most important election of our lifetime" is now a tired line used so predictably that it has not only lost its urgency ... but most of its believability as well.

Fact is, if a majority of conservatives remain in the House Obama will find it difficult to accomplish much. Meanwhile, the Establishment will have lost even more ground.

While I will vote for Romney, I refuse to be moved by the foolish ramblings of those who find it difficult to frame an original thought.

A Sphincter Says What?| 5.30.12 @ 12:43AM

Exactly right

ProfMom| 5.29.12 @ 9:32AM

The most important point has not been mentioned here: yes, yes, we all know that Romney is not a "movement" conservative. Wishing it to be otherwise won't make it so. But Catron is right that Obama and his thugs are dangerous and need to be sent packing. Even more will be coming out about Obama's past and his - shall we say "creative" - narrative about it.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, WE NEED TO REGAIN CONTROL OF CONGRESS. This is where any President's feet can be held to the fire if he goes "squishy" on core constitutional principles.

So, Romney it must be. Do not vote for some pie-in-the-sky third party candidate. And for Heaven's sake, do not stay home. Show up, vote, and elect the most conservative candidate in your Congressional races. Believe me, the press will never see it coming. They never do. Their reactions alone make it worth it.

Then perhaps we should not act like crazy uncles just because "our canidate" didn't win the primary.

Oldefarte| 5.29.12 @ 11:43AM

Bill, we all are tired of it, but the solution is the gradual and complete takeover of the Republican Party by conservatism. We've had a great start from the courageous activities of the tea party movement within the Republican Party, and numerous conservative politicians have now bee elected to office by same. We must continue to fight for even more by electing additional conservates as Republicans. Sure Romney is not the choice of true conservatives, but he's not Obama and the domestic terrorism of the Democratic Party [and therein lies the difference]. We can live to fight another day by electing Romney over Obama!!!!!

Only One Mediator Christ Jesus| 5.29.12 @ 1:09PM

True that, as always, Oldefarte!

Quartermaster| 5.29.12 @ 1:21PM

We'll have to wait and see on that. I doubt Mittens is going to win. Even if he does win, I doubt things will get any better because the Libtard wing of teh GOP just consolidates what the Libtards of the other party put into place.

MIttens and McCain really aren't much different, and McCain would have done much of what the Kenyan has done, and given it a "conservative" imprimatur making it nearly impossible to overturn.

If Mittens does win, then we do need to keep the pressure on, loud and long. Make it widely known that he is not conservative when he does unconservative things so the brand is not damaged by Mittens, or any of the libtard Senators with "R" behind their names.

Occam's Tool| 5.29.12 @ 1:53PM

scotchieguy| 5.29.12 @ 2:52PM

If he can do to Obama what he did to Newt, he will win in an historic landslide. Unlike McCain, he really wants to win this, and most Americans realize Obama is a total disaster. Only the true libs still love him, and they are only 20%. The only reason it is close is due to the media.

Drunken Sailor| 5.29.12 @ 3:40PM

The big open secret is it shouldn't even be close if Obama was a strong canidate. The incumbency alone should have him way ahead of Romney. Normally a challenger spends from the time he is the nominee to November playing catch up and trying to pass the lead dog. In this race they are neck and neck already. Not good for team Oboma. Now if the Republican party will avoid snatching defeat from the jaws of victory maybe we can turn this damn tug around.

A Sphincter Says What?| 5.30.12 @ 12:48AM

Well Sailor, if Obomney is so strong then you shouldn't have any problem with Conservatives staying home in Nov who still remember how Obomney won the nomination with brutal, untruthful, attack ads outspending his opponents sometimes 50-1 on negative ads. I mean, it's only because Obomney is going to win in a landslide because he is laser focused.

Minuteman78| 5.29.12 @ 4:18PM

"...media will be blazing away at Romney for the next six months. There is no need for conservatives to hand them ammunition."

This, along with the quote about an unfettered Obama term says it all.

But you bring up an often-overlooked excellent point - Romney wants to win. McLame just wanted the nomination, then proceeded to tell everyone how he was just like Obama. All Mitt has to do is "message discipline". Pick a couple of key fact-based criticisms and just hammer away relentlessly at Obummer, and don't back off for a minute. Counter every lickspittle media complaint with the same facts and criticism. Hammer, hammer, hammer.

vigilant| 5.29.12 @ 11:58AM

Here they go again. Lecturing those of us who have real problems with Romney like we're ignorant and thick, and if they repeat the same arguments one more time, maybe we'll finally get it. We do get it, deeply, painfully. We've agonized and prayed maybe more than most over the choices we face. Yes, Obama is pathological and capable of great damage, whereas Mitt is "only" weak and power-hungry. But when all the pro's and con's have been weighed and possible outcomes, short and long-term, evaluated, our consciences demand that we make the choices that we believe offer our beloved country the best chance for survival over the long haul. She is gravely wounded and needs major surgery, not a band-aid. Revile us, belittle us, call us names, but we're ready to pay that price, too, and will hold ourselves accountable for our decisions, should history (if we are given time for that) prove us wrong. But sometimes love requires tough decisions, and we love this country apparently more than you understand.

We don't expect Romney to be a movement conservative, God forbid he emulate Reagan and win by a landslide.

Obama, the Man Of Change and Hope---let’s apply Soren Kierkegaard to him. From “Purity of heart is to will one thing”:

“Neither can he be said to will one thing when that one thing which he wills is not in itself one: is in itself a multitude of things, a dispersion, the toy of changeableness, and the prey of corruption!

In the time of pleasure see how he longed for one gratification after another. Variety was his watchword. Is variety, then, to will one thing that shall ever remain the same?

On the contrary, it is to will one thing that must never be the same. It is to will a multitude of things. And a person who wills in such a fashion is not only double-minded but is at odds with himself.

For such a man wills first one thing and then immediately wills the opposite, because the oneness of pleasure is a snare and a delusion. It is the diversity of pleasures that he wills.

So when the man of whom we are speaking had gratified himself up to the point of disgust, he became weary and sated. Even if he still desired one thing---what was it that he desired?

He desired new pleasures; his enfeebled soul raged so that no ingenuity was sufficient to discover something new---something new!

It was change he cried out for as pleasure served him, change, change!!!

And it was change that he cried out for as he came to pleasure’s limit, as his servants were worn out---

CHANGE, CHANGE!” pages 56-57

David| 5.29.12 @ 3:37PM

I will say it again: Either Bam Bam or Romney will get to appoint hundreds of federal judges during the next four years, and I emphatically believe that alone is reason enough to vote for Romney.

Another 4 years of Bam Bam's appointments to benches at the district, appellate, and supreme court levels just scares the sh_t out of me.

People don't realize that most of the sorry ass decisions we get are made in the district and appellate courts.

Fewer than 100 of the average of 10,000 cases filed with the Sup Ct every year are ever heard by the highest court; therefore, the appellate courts are the final say on so many important issues.

There are 13 appellate sections in the U.S.

There are 179 appellate court judges sitting on the benches in those 13 areas.

There are currently 677 district court judges. That number fluctuates as judges die or retire and the vacancies are not immediately filled.

For each district court there is a corresponding bankruptcy court with its own judge. The bankruptcy judges (677 as of this time) are selected by the appellate judges in each appellate district/circuit.

The bankruptcy appointments should ring lots of bells because didn't this admin absolutely screw secured shareholders to the betterment of unions just a couple of years ago.

It is easy to see how the next prez may have the opportunity to appoint hundreds of new judges. And does anyone doubt that Bam Bam will pressure older liberal judges to retire so he can fill their spots with much younger judges.

Our nation will never recover absent a violent revolution.

There is little difference between Obama and Obomney. Now the argument for voting for yet another McCain-style (loser) moderate Republican is because of judges. This didn't seem to be the arguement 3 months ago. The arguement was that Obomney is the "only R who can win against Obama." Well now Conservatives who are going to stay home are supposed to be scared of judges. Don't you get it? We're already FUCKED from these moderate Republicans. We need conservatism and we must take a stand against this continuous cycle of losing/loser bullshit. Again, there is little to no difference in the direction of this nation if Obama or Obomney get elected. NONE. The only difference is how fast we drive toward and off the cliff.

That's just plain dumb.

Having Republicans in the White House is far better than Communists.

How can you not see this?

Scorpio51| 5.29.12 @ 5:43PM

Larry, you have it right.

"If Romney loses ... it will not be the fault of conservatives. It will entirely be the fault of Team Romney and the kingmakers of the GOP."

Yep! None of you know what's coming down the pike for Romney. Heck, you all think he has the needed ddelegates to win. Just wait until Tampa and see what happens. Conservatives still have another chance to save this party. Voting for Romney isn't the way to do it.

Jeamar| 5.29.12 @ 9:27PM

Whose version of "pure" conservatism do we want? The primaries are over and apparently "pure" conservatives rejected the available contenders. Is there, or will there ever be, a candidate that fulfills every individual's political views 100%? Anybody but Obama!

mjs_pa| 5.29.12 @ 9:50PM

What would be more insane: permitting obama-white to be head of the republican party!

A sphincter, I don't know how long you have been following politics, but who sits on the federal bench has always been a concern for conservatives.

I have been posting about judges for months.

What I am pointing out is that we are always concerned about Sup Ct pick, when we should be just as concerned, if not more so, about the other 1,400 federal judges.

Bam Bam cannot be allowed to choose hundreds more judges before he leaves office.

And yes, the federal judges alone are reason enough to go out and vote for Romney.

All that it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing (as has been said others), and that is exactly what some of you are suggesting. Just stay home or vote third party and allow the wrecking ball that is in the white house to get another 4 years.
