How About the Record of DOE Capital?
A abysmal record of defrauding investors and rewarding cronies.
We’re heard a lot about Bain Capital and how it throws people out of work in order to enrich investors, but how about the record of DOE Capital, which has compiled a fantastic record of defrauding investors while benefiting cronies and insiders?
DOE Capital is a Washington-based investment operation that looks for fledgling companies in the field of renewable energy and pours money into them in an attempt to get them get them up and running, building value and creating jobs. Although its purposes are noteworthy, its performance has been at best spotty, at worst catastrophic.
In 2008, for instance, DOE Capital invested in Range Fuels, a company that claimed to have solved the long-standing problem of extracting ethanol from cellulosic plant material. In his 2006 State of the Union Address, President George Bush, Jr. had charged America with being “addicted to oil” and promised cellulosic ethanol from “switchgrass” and other materials as the solution. Charging right ahead, Congress adopted the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act, which mandated the consumption of 100 million gallons of cellulosic ethanol in 2010, 250 million by 2011, and 500 million in 2022 at a time when no one had yet mastered the technology.
Months later, Range Fuels, a Colorado company, claimed to have the answer. In November 2007, Range broke ground on a plant in Soberton, Georgia, promising to generate 100 million gallons of ethanol a year out of pine-logging wastes. Before it even built the plant, Range Fuels won the 2008 North American Fuels Technology Innovation Award for Green Excellence. Full production was promised in 2009.
By 2010, Range hadn’t gotten anywhere, however, and so DOE Capital sunk $50 million into the project. The State of Georgia contributed another $6 million and the U.S. Department of Agriculture added an $80 million loan guarantee from the U.S. Biorefinery Assistance Program. Still, Range was unable to produce a single gallon of cellulosic ethanol. In January 2011 it finally opened the factory and produced one 200-gallon run of methanol, which can’t be used in cars, and then closed down. Dozens of people were put out of work and the job benefits promised to the region never materialized. By making that single run of methanol, however, Range was able to collect the last $26 million from DOE Capital, leaving the venture outfit holding the bag. DOE lost its entire investment — but Range tried to make up for it by donating to DOE’s favorite causes.
In 2011, DOE Capital took another flyer with a small California company that had developed an unusual technology for solar electricity. While most solar panels are flat and made of silicon, this company had invented a tube-shaped device lined with a thin film of rare earths that it claimed could collect reflected light off a white roof, improving conversion by 20 percent. The company had built a fabrication plant in Fremont and had begun production. Silicon prices dropped, however, and conventional panels began gaining the upper hand. It was at this point that DOE Capital decided to try to rescue the company, providing $535 million in loan guarantees. Its CEO made a special trip to Fremont to celebrate the deal.
DOE’s supervision was lax, however, and the company immediately took advantage of the new money by building an entirely unnecessary new fabricating facility along with a lavish new corporate headquarters. The market was already moving in the opposite direction and a year later the company went bankrupt, putting 1,000 people out of work. Once again, DOE Capital lost its entire investment, although again the owners tried to compensate by donating to DOE’s favorite causes.
Another DOE venture that went sour was Massachusetts startup Beacon Power. Beacon had developed a 2,800-pound cylindrical flywheel that spins at supersonic speed in order to store electricity for smoothing voltage irregularities on the electrical grid. DOE Capital liked the technology and invested $43 million. This time its COO traveled to Boston to make the presentation.
Beacon was able to build an innovative 20-megawatt storage facility connecting to the upstate New York grid but state regulations wouldn’t allow it to collect higher rates for providing short-term emergency power. Beacon secured a contract to build a second facility in Pennsylvania but by the time the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission got around to changing the rules in Beacon’s favor, the company was forced to declare bankruptcy. Beacon was able to auction its assets and for once DOE Capital retrieved some of its investment.
In short, DOE’s record of building companies and creating jobs has been abysmal. Worst hurt have been its investors, who have watched hundreds of millions of dollars go down the drain.
The California company that spent its way into bankruptcy, of course, is Solyndra. DOE’s full name is the U.S. Department of Energy. Its COO is Secretary of Energy Steven Chu and its CEO is President Barack Obama. DOE Capital’s favorite cause is the president’s re-election campaign. Its unfortunate investors are you, the American taxpayers.

Nothing will fundamentally change until the federal employment relationship is changed. Until federal employees can be fired as readily as private sector employees, they'll behave just like you'd expect people who cannot be fired to behave.
Federal employment should not be attractive to seekers of plush financial tenure. Federal employment should be unnatractive, the career of last resort or a calling. As things are now it's a sweetheart deal, and so attracts rent-seeking mandarins and control freaks. And people whose personal habits make them unemployable in the private sector.

We have taxation without representation in this country as the bureaucrats we never voted for are ruining this country. All those bureaucrats fall under the Executive branch of government, therefore upsetting the checks and balances within the government. While many trash the Constitution as no longer viable, the real truth is the government is no longer viable.

The right is doing nothing to stop the tyranny either. How many thousands of our service men and women have given their lives in what the believed was protecting the freedoms our country enjoys. Yet, almost every politician from Boehner to Pelosi is incapable of upholding their oath (an oath similar to what our military members swear) and stand up for any principle that might cost them a vote. Quite the opposite, they refuse to even live under many of the laws they implement for the commoners. Even on this board we argue about electability over character and the integrity they will have in upholding their oath.
Maybe if we put this in perspective on this Memorial Day weekend we can see than some gave all in protection of the Constituion while we take the easier road in just whining about the ruling class while doing nothing to stop it. By doing nothing, we are defacating on the those soldiers graves.

The Senate has not passed a budget, but under baseline budgeting 10% is automatically added every year to EVERY budget for every department to spend. All that Congress has to do is pass a Continuing Resolution.
In other words spending increases every year whether Congress sits on their hands with their eyes closed or not. Hairy Reid is happy because he sits and does nothing, but the money spent keeps on increasing for Obama to use to buy votes.
In fact any spending bill passed during the Democrats control of both houses of congress signed by Obama keeps on rolling because no new budget is passed.
Corrupt to its Chicago core, this Democrat and Republican fiasco in our government needs to be tossed out on their ears!

Second, everyone in this country needs to understand that we need oil to survive and maintain our standard of living. The western
countries have had a huge gain in lifestyle and lifespan that has been mostly due to cheap energy.
THESE REPLACEMENT ENERGY SOURCES ARE ALL SCAMS. I am a MIT engineering PhD and have studied this issue for more than a decade.
There are a bunch of hustlers out there selling snake oil that could not and would not get private money because the private investors ask people like me to analyze the technology and we tell the investors it is a scam.
Obviously the Govt does not do that and consequently wastes our money.
It is really quite tragic.

The Third Reich was all about "green." The idea of "Blut und Boden" (Blood and Soil) was about getting back to the ideals of traditional Aryan agriculture and being of strong farmer/peasant stock. Men born of the soil to rule the rest of mankind. Sending the Hitler Youth into the fields during summer training (along with their paramilitary activities) to till the soil of mother earth. Also: In 1935, the regime enacted the "Reich Nature Protection Act". While not a purely Nazi piece of legislation, as parts of its influences pre-dated the Nazi rise to power, it nevertheless reflected Nazi ideology. The concept of the Dauerwald (best translated as the "perpetual forest") which included concepts such as forest management and protection was promoted and efforts were also made to curb air pollution. Also: Himmler made efforts to ban the hunting of animals. Göring was an animal lover and conservationist. The current animal welfare laws in Germany are adapted from laws introduced by the National Socialist regime...(Thanks to the down and dirty of Wikipedia.)
So there, since you and Clint are both too lazy to do your own fast research, that is a start. maybe instead of taking your talking points from the MSM, MediaMatters, et al., you can do some actual reading.

Ouch, Tucker is very skilled at rubbing our noses into these smelly Washington swindles. But, in our defense, there’s not a blessed thing we can do about it. Do we enjoy paying taxes so political insiders can personally receive millions disguised as serving the “public welfare”? No, we don’t enjoy it – why would we? Is it comforting to learn how easy it is to swindle us taxpayers, to bank millions in so-called loans and grants, to purchase large estates, expensive cars and Ivy League educations for children and all at our expense? And, yes, we realize we’re being swindled by our government employees, but they hold all the face cards in this poker game. Even Tucker, out of fear of lawsuits, would only reveal the names of Bush, Obama and Chu. Since they’re completely untouchable, their names are the only ones which can be safely revealed and the act of revealing is hardly a testament to this author’s courage.
Face the facts Tucker, our political system has evolved to reward political insiders with taxpayer money – legally and with complete immunity. The proprieties are always observed however and all we, the public, can do is express our resentment. Our laws allow us to be continuously swindled and we readily acknowledge that. But we’re powerless to root out this unending corruption, so what’s the point in reminding us we’re helpless victims?
And we will go on being scammed by political insiders with the willing assistance of our government employees. Our Constitution guarantees us the right to complain about it but it provides no means to do anything about it – and isn’t that exactly what our government masters are counting on?
