Zombie Liberals would rather sit this one out.
WASHINGTON — Here I am on the campaign trail, frenetically promoting my book, The Death of Liberalism. I appear on scores of radio interviews, in and out of the studio. I appear on Fox News and C-SPAN. I hardly have time for dinner, but it could be more demanding still. I could be invited to appear on mainstream media, as it is still quaintly called. Yet I am not. ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, and MSNBC do not call. I, the editor of a major magazine from the right that has been around for 45 years, have written a book arguing that a major political ideology, Liberalism, is dead, and no one in the mainstream media seems to think it merits even a spitball. Things have changed even more than the mainstream media knows.
Thirty years ago, when I came out with a book, all the above networks — at least all the above networks that were then in business — would have me on. They thought I was crazy, but they would have me on. Through all these years my views have not changed or radicalized. They remain pretty much fixed, though possibly I am a little bit more liberal. I am more tolerant of sexual diversity. I have flipped and oppose capital punishment. I am open to reforming the criminal justice system to treat nonviolent crime differently from violent crimes. But today the mainstream media is alien country to me. I cannot get in even with a green card. Three, possibly four, presidents have been my friends, but I remain persona non grata with mainstream media, especially when I talk about politics.
The voices of conventional mainstream media never tire of mawkishly saying that something has changed in America. In this I agree with them. Yet as my hordes of publicists spread out through medialand tempting the personages with appetizing morsels of my thesis, only the conservatives bite. The Liberals turn a stony face. In 2009 when Sam Tanenhaus came out with a book titled The Death of Conservatism they clapped their hands, though there was no evidence in the book to support its thesis, and a year later, on October 19, 2010, as the conservatives were about to have their mightiest victory in decades, the unfortunate Tanenhaus came out with a second edition now in paperback!
Today, of course, the mainstream media bewail how polarized the political landscape has become. They fret over the violent language, the dirty tricks, the lack of dialogue. But what they are fretting about is that there has over the past thirty years appeared a point of view that disagrees with the serried ranks of Liberalism. It is the point of view held by 42 percent of the American people. It is the point of view that has dominated politics since Ronald Reagan’s election and gained emphasis since President Bill Clinton threw up his hands and said, “The era of big government is over.” It was in retreat in the last years of George W. Bush and perhaps the first six months of President Obama, but now it is again dominant. It is also a perfectly respectable point of view.
As I continue on my campaign, I am increasingly aware that what has changed in the country is mainstream media. They are less hospitable to conservatives. They act like a political party, an especially partisan party. Conservatives have emerged in media to express their point of view on major issues of the day. This is diversity of opinion that the increasingly partisan mainstream media cannot countenance, and so they say it is shocking. It is incendiary. It is closed-minded.
Actually, one of the rare figures on television or radio that strenuously works to include both the left and the right in debates is — prepare yourself — Sean Hannity of Fox News. He really works at it. He airs people who disagree with him and he lets the left and the right have at each other. As for mainstream media, if it airs a debate between the left and the right the person on the right is usually a critic of the right who feigns a therapeutic message for conservatism, say, David Frum, a man with no standing on the right.
I say wherever I go nowadays that Liberalism is dead. One piece of evidence is mainstream media. It pretends the dominant political view in the country does not exist, conservatism.

From the desk of Keith Olbermannn:
Dear Human Resources Person,
I understand you have recently been looking into hiring some person of thoughtful magnificence as a journalist for your network. Well relax, your search is over! Many people have told horrible, horrible lies and suggested that my career as Amerikkka's number one progressive journalist is over. Nothing could be further from the truth! My career is alive and well, and I believe together we can re-make Amerikkka into the kind of place someone would actually want to live!
We do, of course, have a small problem. The Satanic Fiend Rupert Murdoch, who is the Worst Person in the World, has polluted the airwaves, or cable waves, or internet waves, or whatever it is these days with his hate-filled counter-revolutionary reactionary garbage. WE MUST STOP HIM!!!!! How? By ignoring him!
Even when I was a tiny little progressive, only knee high to ants who were members of the worker class, my mother always told me to just ignore a bully/purse snatcher/child molester/Republican and they will just go away. That is what we must do now, and that is what I can do for your network! I will just ignore them! REALLY, I WILL!!!!! I WILL PRETEND THEY JUST DON'T EXIST, JUST LIKE THESE WEIRD PURPLE BUGS CRAWLING UP MY LEGS!!!!!
Ummm, okay, at any rate. I believe we will be a big hit if we just do a show where we pretend these so-called "conservatives" (FASCIST REACTIONARY BABY EATERS) don't exist. We will not talk to them or about them. We will not interview them or review their books. And they will go away. NOT US! I WILL NEVER GO AWAY! EVERYONE WILL KNOW ME AND LOVE ME! I know I can make this program work. It's been a huge success at MSNBC and the ALGORE Network. It was only because of secret subversive reactionary elements that infiltrated those networks (possibly jewish neocon zionists) that I was forced to leave. I know that your network, of course, harbors no such hateful elements. I know we can make this work. I know my career is NOT DEAD! And I look forward to hearing from you soon, or else YOU ARE THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD!
Sincerely,
Keith Olbermann

With all due respect to Mr. Tyrrell. We haven't had a conservative as the Republican nominee for 28 years. We had dam few before that. It seems to me, the liberals have had a liberal to vote for in every presidential election in the last 84 years. '.....Breitbart.comObama DOJ Forces University To Allow Biological Male Into Female Restrooms by Ben Shapiro 2 hours ago The Obama Department of Justice has reportedly ordered the University of Arkansas at Ft. Smith (UAFS) to allow a male student to use women’s bathrooms on campus. Campus Reform reports that a male student who calls himself “Jennifer Braly,” and is in the process of raising money to pay for his sex-reassignment surgery, filed a complaint with the Office of Civil Rights in the Department of Justice after the campus told him to use gender-neutral bathrooms rather than women’s restrooms. “Someone saw me using the women’s public restrooms and complained,” said Braly. “[O]ne problem to this is there are not unisex bathrooms in every building. Especially the two main buildings where most of my classes are, so I have to go to a completely different building to use the restroom.” The university had offered to turn more gender-specific bathrooms into gender-neutral bathrooms. Braly filed the complaint anyway.Mark Horn, vice president of university relations, said that the DOJ “basically made its expectations through the attorney and the decision was made to respond to that direction … [the] DOJ complaint caused revisiting of our thinking … In the eyes of the law this individual is entitled to use the bathroom that she identifies with.” Women on campus have complained about Braly using the female restrooms.Braly is anatomically male. He is also 36 years old, and has been married twice, and has a biological daughter with his second ex-wife. The DOJ has refused to release the letter in question.

Jack in Wi.| 5.24.12 @ 6:37PM
The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ who is still it's head, with the Pope, as his earthly general manager. From the Catholic Church comes The Holy Bible, Sacred Tradition, mass charity to the poor and sick. It has also given the world the University, the Hospital, the Just War doctrine in a quest for peace on earth. The Church has put forth great theology, philosophy, art, architecture, music and literature. It is still the largest private education and healthcare provider in the world.
Numerous Heresy's, Rabbinical Talmudic Judasim, Islam, 35,000 squabbling Protestant sects, the French Revolution, Atheism, Socialism Communism, National Socialism, and the new Neopaganism have all been founded to replace and destroy the Church. It has suffered many millions of marytrs and thousands of persecutions. Yet it still as God's Light unto the world.
One Mediator, Jesus| 5.24.12 @ 6:55PM
"The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ". That's funny, I didn't know that Jesus Christ would actually command His own brethren to Murder each other!
And, Jesus Christ FOUNDED Christianity~ meaning those who are actually born of His Spirit, by His Grace, through Faith.
He didn't found an Apostate Religion that teaches that Mary was the Mother of God, and was born without Sin and therefore able to gorgive our sins. That is sickening.
And He didn't found an Apostate Religion with scoundrels who teach that they are His "Vicars" on Earth, who get to carry out these false and abominable teachings with stealth, and even with Murder for SIX centuries. and they have still never repented of the vile teachings to this day.
Jesus wanted no church hierarchy, no man to be "Vicar" of Himself, as He has told us in His Word that He is the Head of His church, and He is the ONE Mediator between God and Man.
You are an obvious product of its teachings, as are most who are in agreement with this false Religion.
You have been taught that Bible believing Christians are heretics, as these liars from of old have taught.

Jack in Wi.| 5.24.12 @ 9:15PM
Read the Bible and the Book of Acts Margie. Peter is the obvious leader of the Apostles. He was the first to go out to the gentiles. All the early Church fathers within the lifetime of the Apotles saw the apostolic nature of sucession of the Church. As one leader died or was marytered someone else took his place. Jesus founded the Church. The Church under His authority gave us the Bible and so much more. Do you really think that all those people who aren't Jevhovah's Witnesses like yourself are all going to hell. Margie like most Protestants seems to be her own Pope. Of course the Jehovah's witnesses aren't even Christian, much like the Mormons or Muslims.
There would be no Protestant churches, without the Catholic Church. It is laugable watching 35,000 protestant sects all squabling about the Bible which comes from God under the authority and authorship of the Catholic Church. Every letter of Paul and every Gospel was aproved by a council of the Church and the Pope. It wasn't done until 4 centuries after the Church's founding. Oh by the way Margie. the first 50 copies of the Bible were paid for by the Roman Emperor, It was a huge expense.

Let's add one more rather important item about the Roman Catholic church that in my view
is as important as the religious dogma arguments. The Church kept Western Civilization going through the Dark Ages, the Medieval Era and brought about the Reformation and the education system the led to the Scientific method and the development of real technology, So in a sense, we wouldn't be having these discussions online, using computers without the Church.

I have read it's between 30,000 and 35,000 sectrs. Of course some of them aren't really Christian like Jim Jones cult, the Mormons or the Worldwide Church of God. There are a number of different Mormon sects as well. Every independent bible Church is it's own religion. None of them have anything like a common theology. It is all a tower of babble.
RCV| 5.24.12 @ 8:03PM
Yes, and the English Monarch Henry VIII murdered several of his wives and divorced those he let live. But that doesn't disqualify Queen Elizabeth from speaking out against murder or divorce.
This is the 21st century, Margie. The Catholic Church isn't persecuting heretical anabaptists anymore; the US isn't holding millions in slavery; the good citizens of Salem aren't burning witches anymore, and the Japanese Army isn't raping Chinese civilians in Nanking.
You're trying to cast yourself in a medeival period piece movie as a brave religious dissident bravely fighting for her freedom, but nobody's buying it. This is 21st century America. You, margie, are free to not believe in the Trinity, not believe that Jesus is one with the Father, believe that every single syllable in the Bible is painstakingly accurate and written by God Himself. Nobody cares, really, least of all Pope Benedict in Rome.

If you don't care then why do you always show up to argue with the Word of God?
Say, how's that belief that Homosexuality isn't Sin going for you?
And that belief that the words of Paul aren't to be taken as God's Truth even though God DID appoint him to be an Apostle and to write His Truth?
Oh, that's right! It was Paul who emphasized morality in his writings, and taught us to shun immorality, and that doesn't sit well with you.
And how's that worship of Mary and the Pope Idolatry thing going for you?
Unbelievers (in the true Gospel of Jesus Christ) like you are certainly "free" to reject His Gospel, and to mock and deride Christians, but God has a special place for you, on His Left, with the goats.

Because I speak according to the Word of God and have said and still agree with God, that Mary is not the Mother of God, this liar states that I must hate Mary.
A very lame attempt by a studied Leftist Obama backing lawyer!
Notice how he changes the wording in order to try and deceive!
Catholicism holds to the teaching that Mary is the Mother of God, that is what they say. They do not say she was simply the Mother of the physical Christ, as they try and present the abomination that she was born sinless and therefore co-redemptrix with Christ.
The Devil truly is in the details.
ALL have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God, as it is written. Rom. 3:23.
And there is ONE MEDIATOR between God and Man, the Man Christ Jesus. 1 Tim. 2:5.
That's my motto, and I'm sticking to it.
And for someone who says he rejects Catholicism, he sure does a good job of trying to defend it.

"For God so loved the world that he gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal Life.
For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
He who believes in Him is not condemned; he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the Name of the only Son of God." Jn. 3:16-18.
Do you care where you end up? Do you care where your Jewish friends end up? How about your Muslim friends or your Catholic friends or your Mormon friends?
Do you reject the true Gospel of Jesus Christ? You must answer to God for rejecting His Son, for it is Him that you have your rebellion against.

The base of the liberal establishment has always been the newspapers and they are dying.
The managers/owners appear oblivious to the fact that the public is deserting them in droves because the news print media is peddling a defective product, i.e., a lie or series of lies.
Why would anyone pay the old line print media money so they could receive nothing but propaganda?
Apparently the public isn't as dumb as the owners/management class believe and the numbers tell the story.
Profits are down significantly throughout the print media universe.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.

America is just as filled with people who scream that the government is NOT broke, that the credit cards are NOT maxed out, and that the gravy train has NOT ground to a halt, as Greece is. Moreover, taking on the role of World Policeman when you don't have the funds is another one of your own doing on the right. Correct those 2, meet the D's in the middle, and get this taken care of.

John Navratil| 5.24.12 @ 12:17PM
See http://www.taxpolicycenter.org.....Docid=205. You will find that tax revenues as a percent of GDP are about the same.
The problem is the deficit which did not exist in the 50's as we were paying down the debt of WWII.
What you are trying to do is raise the amount of government spending, aren't you?
Jefferson| 5.24.12 @ 4:56PM
Go ask Reagan and the Bush Twins about the debt. Without them we'd have almost no debt. Conservatives talk fiscal conservative, but they are anything but... when in power they are drunk with the giveaways to their cronies. If you're honest about it, you would agree.
John Navratil| 5.24.12 @ 5:47PM
Jefferson,
If you are honest, you will notice that the only time we have run surpluses (think the Clinton administration), the Republicans held the house. That is, until the Bush 43 administration - a period the conservatives decry and which gave rise to the term RINO. Prior to 1994, the House, from which budgets originate was held for forty years by the Democrats.
Reagan put a balanced budget on the table every year for Tip O'Neill to declare dead on arrival. He agreed to $3 in cuts for $1 in taxes, got the taxes but never got the cuts. Bush 41 was snookered by the deal cooked by Dick Darman who was convinced that deficits could not be tamed without tax increases. Sound familiar? Bush 41 got the taxes, but not the cuts.
Look at the "Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974". This is the one which not only demanded a budget from Congress and the Senate every year, but also demanded that if the monies were appropriated, they must be spent. This was in response to Nixon who refused to spend money like Congress wanted - he just never got around to signing the checks, so to speak. That act marks the point in time when deficit spending, which has been running about 1/2 percent per year, began its inexorable march to today's madness.
In 1996, Pelosi took the house and spending - already out of control - went bat-sh*t crazy. It's no wonder the Senate will NOT produce a budget. The continuing resolutions permit, after a fashion, spending as usual.
2010 was a tidal event. We will see if the tide still rises in November.

"The 1950's level of taxation. You have something against the 1950's?"
PurpleGay, as with almost all liberals, never learns from history.
At 90% with all of the attendant deductions and exemptions, the top 1% accounted for barely 15% of the Federal Tax Dollar.
When Ronaldus Magnus lowered the tax rates and reduced the deductions and exemptions, the amount went to 30%.
And when GW introduced his tax rate cuts, the take went to nearly 40% where it remains to this day at 38-39%.
At 15% in 1955 the rest of us paid the balance of 85%.
In 1985 at 30% the balance was 70%.
And now at 39% the balance is 61% for the rest of us 99% that pay income taxes.
Raising the rate back to 90% would mean that WE and YOU would have to pay 50% more on average.
Are you ready to do that? I certainly pay enough in taxes and don't believe that we have insufficient levels of government. You obviously want more.
We know that you liberals always talk about paying more taxes in the abstract, but you never send in more money voluntarily. It always has to be at the point of a levy from the IRS.
There is never enough Government for you fools, eh?
Yes, let's go back to the 50's, shall we?
The average middle class family paid about 4 or 5% in income taxes.
And a concomitant level of government.

Also, you blooming idiot, did you read Victor's post above? Obviously not, the top 1% (you know, the wealthy) had their income tax rates reduced by 11% (39.6 to 35%) while the low and middleclaes rates were reduced by 1/3 or 33% (15 to 10%) by the Evil Bush.
In 1980 when Carter was still President, the top income tax rate was 70% and the top 1% paid around 17% of income tax collections. Now at 35% 30 years later the top 1% of income earners pay 38-40% of income tax collections.

"Meet the D's in the middle" is simply Orwellian Newspeak for "do it our way." We've tried that, and we're now $16 trillion in debt. What's more, Democrats have absolutely no plan or intention to reduce that debt, EVER.
Democrats will continue spending until they've run out of other people's money -- and that time is fast approaching.
Purp| 5.24.12 @ 12:02PM
Just exactly WHEN did you "meet the D's in the middle? "
That is such bs. Tell it to Hannity.
If you're worried about debt - blame your own side. Between just Reagan and the Bush Twins, over 10 Trillion of that debt was added under their watch.
And remember, the 90's were the boom years, D was in charge, and created more jobs than any of the 3 R's and taxes went up, and debt went down. Soon as GW Bush came to town we went the other way and we are still trying to recover from his messes.
Now, you want to go back to cutting taxes for the wealthiest, raising the debt again (Romney or Ryan's plans add to the debt) while killing off Medicare, drastically hurting Social Security, and nearly abolishing Medicaid and other programs for the poor.
Get real, tell the truth - what your side says and what they will do are 2 completely different things. They did the same thing in 2010. They promised jobs, jobs, jobs, and promptly passed anti-abortion legislation and other social crap as soon as they were sworn in.
Until your side is ready to raise revenue in equal measure to spending cuts AND reign in the over bloated and expensive American Empire we can ill afford, you aren't talking reality, meeting in the middle or anything like it.
It really is that simple - tax, and cut and and simplify.

You're right, we do need a more reasonable tax base. Let's begin by having the 48% of households that pay no income tax, start paying. We can exempt the 15% or so that live in poverty, but everyone else should be paying something.
Purp| 5.24.12 @ 12:05PM
Agreed. Let's see what revenue it brings in. the only problem is that nearly 50% of the populace lives at, below or very near the poverty level.
But no Republican will ever go for it. That's is the showstopper. Let them propose it, I dare ya. They won't.
John Navratil| 5.24.12 @ 12:32PM
Purp,
As in PUR-e P-oppycock. The current poverty rate is approx. 15%. As you know, this is a politically defined term referring to the availability, or lack thereof, of good and services commonly available to the mainstream populace. Your 50% figure is claptrap on the face of it as that would define the median. The median income per family is over $50,000 per year, well more than double the poverty level of some $22,000 for the same family. Draw the curve which supports your claim. It would have no families earning between the poverty rate and the median.
Keep making it up, Purp.
Jack London| 5.24.12 @ 2:03PM
John, the median income level adjusted for inflation has barely moved since 1979 and the poorest 10% have also flatlined. The top 10% of course has done dramatically well. Do you think this is a success for 'trickle-down' economics?
John Navratil| 5.24.12 @ 2:52PM
Jack London,
Would you prefer to live in 1979? The top 10% as well and the bottom 20% are not static and change dramatically from year to year. Half of the top 10% in 1979 are dead.
Jack London| 5.24.12 @ 4:02PM
Well John, if you're talking about the turnover of people then that indeed is a truism and I can't dispute that, although I would point out that rich people live longer than poor people. If you're talking about social mobility, then you're way out of bounds, as we have one of the worst social mobility records of all developed nations.
As one of our late great historians, Howard Zinn, said: "Capitalism has always been a failure for the lower classes. It is now beginning to fail for the middle classes."
John Navratil| 5.24.12 @ 5:56PM
Jack London,
I sure can't agree with you on the social mobility. Examples are everywhere. We do not have a caste system.
Howard Zinn proposed that power rested with the people against the omni-present oppressor - the people with guns and power. If capitalism is failing for the middle classes, what do you propose? What power will you bring to right the wrongs you see? Does it involve more government?
Jefferson| 5.24.12 @ 5:01PM
You're right John, in poverty yes.
http://news.yahoo.com/census-u.....39972.html
And, you are right again about median income:
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2.....-o22.shtml
But, median income is edging down toward poverty ... a very dangerous sign.
John Navratil| 5.24.12 @ 5:58PM
Jefferson,
I'll take poverty in the U.S. in 2012 over life in much of the world, developed or not. At least I have a hope that it can get better.

What proportion of income do low paid people pay in other taxes, Mike?
Your Bridge Is Falling Down| 5.24.12 @ 2:45PM
Does it still count as other taxes paid when it is 'reimbursed' as tax credits, etc?
At what percentage of the population is it where taxes paid are not positive, and are not negative, but are at exactly zero? (Hint: 49.5% pay no taxes, so it less than 49.5. Hint hint: at least 40% pay negative taxes, i.e., receive from government more money than they pay in taxes, so it is between 40.0% and 49.5%. Use this start point to really impress your conservative foes!)
Jack London| 5.24.12 @ 4:05PM
So, what do you think would happen to the poorly paid if we cut their tax credits? At the other end, what do you think would happen to Romney and co if we increased their capital gains and carried interest taxes?
Your Bridge Is Falling Down| 5.24.12 @ 5:01PM
Why, the poor would have even less incentive to provide jobs for the rich - resulting in even less employment of the rich - all while resulting in even less overall revenues to cover the overall even more spending required to offset the less employed rich - all while resulting in even more incentive for the poor to move what jobs they do provide for the rich overseas to other countries - of course.
Jefferson| 5.24.12 @ 5:06PM
"Your argument is falling down" - the rich don't create jobs - they invest in companies to create wealth. Companies make wealth by having customers. How many millionaires does it take to buy 12 million Automobiles/year? Do they? How many houses can millionaires buy to increase housing starts?
Capital (=Money) is needed to buy the buildings and equipment to make things and provide services - but if there aren't tens of millions and tens of millions of customers to buy the things and services - you have wealthy individuals but no jobs ... kind of like what we have today, huh?

People like Purp, who hijack reasonable discourse with their toxic stupidity are simply a cost we pay for freedom of speech. Unfortunately, otherwise intelligent people are trapped into trying to persuade the "Purp's" with facts and logic only to find themselves debating a lunatic.
Although you already know this, I would point out that Purp contributes as much logic and reason to public discourse as my neighbors barking dogs. Safe behind their fence, these little dogs yap unceasingly from the moment they are let out to the moment they are brought in.
Like Purp, their sole reason to exist is to destroy their neighbors tranquility. However, I would remind you that by your own admission, you know the names of all the undesirables and unlike the dogs which are audible, you do not have to read Purp's inane rantings. Do as a poster advised yesterday and simply ignore the ones you know better than to read.
Reading and responding to Purp is like kicking the fence of those little three pound dogs, since they know you can't touch em, they just bark louder.

Many government workers have been laid off due to budget and tax cuts thanks to bush economy. Now if we could only get congress to pay or contribute to some of their benefits - like, say, the subsidized cafeteria, gym or free parking at the airports, that may help. Also, why r we paying $89,000 for George Bush's phone calls next year? Or Secret Service protection for Newt for a month longer than necessary? Funny, I never here much chatter over this type of looting, but feed a hungry child, and the crazies come out.

Obama has spent more money than all previous presidents combined? How did you get that? That's not even close to being true. Annualized, federal government spending has increased 1.4% a year during the Obama administration. That's the lowest annualized increase in federal spending in the last 60 years. Obviously, the Republican Congress has a large roll to play in that, but you can't say federal spending under Obama is growing rapidly-factually it's not.

Liberals falsely accuse Romney of campaigning with PAC ads focusing on Obama's ties to Jeremiah Wright that easily and quickly exposes Romney nixed the idea that was only a PAC brainstorming session idea that was quickly nixed by the PAC itself - all while the liberal mainstream media focuses daily on Obama's ties to Wright for over a week essentially providing the nixed ads on behalf of republicans - for free.
Liberals falsely accuse republicans of failing to morally live by the golden rule regarding homosexuals that easily and quickly exposes the actual immoral failings of democrats on not just the golden rule but all biblical teachings.
Liberals falsely accuse republicans of ignoring the need for even more Dodd-Frank crippling financial regulations based on JP Morgan losses accountable only to JP Morgan stakeholders that easily and quickly exposes the crippling aspects of the Dodd-Frank financial regulations already on the books - all while easily and quickly exposing the government politicians are accountable to citizen taxpayers for double the losses of JP Morgan - each and every single day.

That means that in the less-than-three-years Obama has been in office, the federal debt has increased by $4.212 trillion--more than the total national debt of about $4.1672 trillion accumulated by all 41 U.S. presidents from George Washington through George H.W. Bush combined."

The only problem with your theory is why the government is broke. The government has had a reasonable and ever increasing (with just a couple of small drops) revenue stream since forever. In other words revenue hasn't changed (especially when averaged over a few years as you should do) spending has!
We have had or contributed to the role of the worlds policeman for a hundred years.
And this meme of austerity means stagnation and government spending equals "growth" has got to stop! Where is your historical precedent for that? Roosevelt-failed miserably, Japan - bubble economy, still a failure. You can maybe (ironically) argue Reagan and military spending, but he also cut taxes tremendously which ballooned revenues. Plus, military spending is steals the least from the greater economy because it's emphasis on manufacturing and research.

To continue with the cinematic theme, if liberalism were actually to die, it would most likely resemble the Predator at the end of the first film with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Fine piece and accurate and brave to say how shabbily they (the liberal media) treat critics such as oneself. Note that, in this regard, they seem to be doing the same to Edw. Klein, whose book on the president, The Amateur, is getting no (overt) attention. It is indeed a bizarre, and disturbing, phenomenon in our society, this massive and self--reinforcing culture of intellectual and moral denial. We must deal with it, perhaps simply by ignoring it and concentrating on institutions and zones that are still facing reality, let the others go their way into oblivion. The hitch here is that we cannot just ignore them so long as they have political power and can determine, or at least markedly influence, the direction of American life, the place of America in the world, etc. We have fine institutions -- the (non-mainstream) media, some universities (still), much of our religious establishment (am I mistaken here?), the military (for the most part), and we have millions and millions of devoted American citizens ready to fight but over and over again let down by the elites (it is the wrong word) in Washington, who consistently go for their own short-term and purely personal advantages (which would be okay -- Madison recognized this was inevitable -- if checks and balances were functioning as designed). Bollocks; but we'll keep going, cheerfully and with faith.

Neither do I believe that liberalism is dead, nor will it ever die. It hangs around like an old smell from last night's liver and onions. Yes, Conservatism is giving liberalism a run for its money these days, however, that old "scratch" is always speaking to those who would listen, those who say they are concerned about the poor, the ever growing defense budget, or those people who say just want to have employment and in the same token take government handouts. But they, the liberals, have that jewel of the Nile, the American broadcasting system under their thumb. Mr. Tyrrell, the best thing you may do is to keep on writing, and maybe, after a few more years, your words will catch on. Perhaps not, but maybe one day you will be remembered by our children as a man who spoke the truth, and rendered an honorable place on their bookshelf. Much of what's wrong with the mainstream media lies in their lack of self-awareness and their unwillingness to consider that a different point of view than their own is not radical. They're absorbed with the same fantasy as the Left in general that believes "tolerance" means everyone must agree with them. They then go on to show they're not the least bit tolerant of anyone who doesn't see the world as they do. You think the government spends too much money? Then, you're a right wing nut. You're troubled by abortion and the President demanding that churches pay for it? You must be a Nazi. The Left and its willing allies in the media only have slander left in their arsenal to maintain their position. They created a need for alternative news sources, and bemoan that someone had the nerve to fill the void. We see the decline in all Liberal "news" sources because they cannot examine their own product and see how terrible it is. Tyrrell nails the Liberals, and they can't handle it. The Left can't stand a different point of view and neither can President Obama who demonizes his fellow Americans. By the way, buy the book.

The white hoods are Republicans today, extremists to be sure, but no where near a Democratic base member. If you doubt it, look at how the Ol' South votes today.

The only thing that changes is what bad behavior the Democratic Party is endorcing this week and what racial or ethnic group it is trying to rev up for votes.
The old South practices slavery, Jim Crowe, KKK then they are Democrats. The Old South gives those bad behaviors up, then they become Republicans. I see your point purp. How many times have the Republicans and Democrats reversed themselves in the 150 years since Lincoln?

“There’s a sucker born every minute.” and “Never give a sucker an even break.”---two truths to always keep in mind, and with which to filter the ever more ridiculous unfolding of human foibles.
Why should the highly evolved top dogs of the MSM,, aka liberalism establishment, give anyone a break?
SUCKER!
Or, these days, given the recent expression of Narcissus on stilts, the Facebook IPO “disaster”---
ZUCKER!
As in, you are ZUCKED!
Related to the sucker-suckee divide is the fool-knave one.
Maybe they are one and the same thing.
Here’s the sneaky thing---sneaky, in the sense that the tick-tock passing of minute after minute has, like dripping water, done its thing so slowly as to miss noticing--- machines have so taken over humanity, in the developed countries, that most people in those places are living lives filled with IDLE time.
Yes---we are a nation of IDLERS!
And, we all know what the devil does with their---OUR---hands. Play on, with—THINGS.
So, RET uses his free time to write a book, and now spends more free time to bemoan the lack of other people using their free time to TALK to him about what he wrote.
See what I mean---idle time in action. Oh, so handy!
My advice---get physically real, get down and literally dirty, by finding some land you can USE your hands to physically handle, and be a true creator by growing food.
Why, I’ll even leave some slack, and let you use a rototiller, to initially prepare the soil---go ahead and use some gasoline and a machine, if you have to.
Given that you will live for a while, though, best would be to “marry” your land, by using time, when it’s the right season, with a shovel and pitchfork, double digging the soil, square foot by square foot.
Here’s how to do it.
Lay out plots no more than five feet wide---say you have one that’s 5 by 20 feet. At one end, dig a trench one foot deep, and move the soil to the other end of the plot. Then, use a pitchfork to loosen the soil another foot deep. If you have very hard and rocky soil, as I did, get down on your knees, and pound a crowbar as deep as you can with a heavy hammer, removing rocks as you go.
Of course, you should do a soil test right away to find out what amendments you need to add. Or, like me, you could just add compost and horse manure into the trench, as you go.
Next, move the top foot of soil next to the trench over what you just loosened. Rinse and repeat---that is, loosen the next trench, etc, etc, etc.
Doing this, year by year---in short, using your idle hands to improve your garden---beats reading books and spreading idle thoughts.
Remember the “human growth” movement?
Well, by being seasonally “attached” to your garden, thusly, you are physically growing yourself, at least partly---if you plant, tend, and eat the gracefully yielded produce. And, you are getting back to the source, essentially, by growing the soil.
A time to every purpose, a season for every thing, though.
These idle-hands days, within which most people have moved to urban jungles, and therefore have no place to practice “dirty hands”, it would take a paradigm shift for society to come close to doing what I write about.
Maybe it’s meant for the older and wiser of us, who’ve moved on from the “Facebook Revolution” type reality.
Ah, it seems like only yesterday, when the computer divide was the topic du jour---and now, in oh so many ways, it could be all about the “garden” divide.
Get and BE real!
You human beings---humus Beings.

Two observations. First, perhaps Mr. Tyrell's book offers no new information or insights that merit appearances on the media outlets he names. Ann Coulter certainly seems to have no problem getting booked on so-called "liberal" media venues everytime she brings out a new book.
Second observation. Perhaps I speak for many Americans who are frankly tired of the labels and ideological gamesmanship of both sides. Bomb-throwing, name calling and derisive dismissal of solutions because they depart from the opinions of a political party's base only ensures continued strife and exacerbates our problems. Liberals and conservatives are equally guilty in behaving like spoiled children who want everything their way. But at the end of the day, unless our elected officials find the backbone to come together and seek out solutions that address the common good and not political ideology, we are lost.
David Doney| 5.24.12 @ 3:12PM
You are correct in that the debate has shifted to the Right since the crisis, as folks seem to be thinking: "If they gave my tax dollars to the bank, I'm not giving them any more."
President Obama's huge tax cuts, big deficits, and aggressive intervention in foreign countries is Right of center. His centrist healthcare bill (far left is Medicare for all with doctors on the government payroll) is not particularly liberal.
That said, very little the Conservatives are saying is factually accurate.
For example, both spending and revenue are 3% GDP away from historical average, so we have a revenue and a spending problem, not just one or the other.
Second, that climate change is real and man-influenced is the overwhelming scientific consensus. There is a lot more debate in the media than in the scientific community, as the former is very influenced by oil money.
Third, CBO estimates the Bush tax cuts will add $3 trillion to the debt over the next decade, not add to revenues.
And last, marginal tax rates on the wealthy are not correlated with job creation, nor is higher levels of regulation.
In other words, the facts have a liberal bias. This will doom the Far-Right eventually.
David Doney| 5.24.12 @ 3:15PM
I should clarify my prior post; big deficits and high spending relative to GDP are very consistent with Reagan, not necessarily conservatives more generally.

Emmett, the problem with your claim and your book is that it has the merits of a German Jew in 1939 claiming to a stadium full of Black Shirts that the Brown Shirt movement is dead….
What next, claims that only 20% of people in this country are “liberals” yet they manage to get 50-60% of government power in elections over decades? Exactly how does that happen?
If FNC is the non-liberal TV News outlet of choice you might want to look at the viewership of all of those non-FNC competitors and explain how they dwarf the viewership of FNC both individually and combined with the exception of CNN and MSNBC?
There is the way it should be and the way it is. You seem stuck on the former at the expense of about 100 years of steady “progress” into the arms of some version of Marx’s nightmare. An eternal optimist might not want to hear this but having the autopsy say the patient was cancer free when he died from complication of that cancer is not a victory for the patient. The prognosis today for this nation is that it is on a “terminal” trajectory and between 40-51 percent will continue to vote for a national suicide pact for as long as they can perceive personal benefit from that Pact and not suffer any consequences for their actions at the polls.
I wish you the very best of luck with your new book but I’m a realist before anything else.

We can certainly “take back” the latest tie we received for Father’s Day but taking back our country occupies a much higher notch on the impossibility scale. Still, hope springs eternal, even as our government borrows more money.
Books with titles like “Kick the Can Back Up the Road” explain it clearly and complete with charts, graphs and other flights of dreary factualism. Western governments can’t change and certainly don’t want to – mainly because a majority of their citizens don’t want to. You promise much, you borrow money to payoff your promises, the next incoming crop of elected employees borrows even more to pay for those promises which helped elect them and on it goes.
The hope is you can keep refinancing your Nation’s massive debt forever – when you max out one credit card, you switch to a new one. We could trade California to the Euro Zone for Greece, Europeans would jump at that deal, at least for a short while. But in very little time, California and its citizens would become a bigger headache for Europe than Greece is for them now.
When the average citizen owes something like $200,000 as his or her share of the national debt, there is no “Taking Back Your Country” – that’s almost absurd in its naiveté. And should your individual share of the national debt rise to $250,000, so what? You can’t get blood out of a rock or out of an Obama voter either.

Pat,
One thing I’ve learned in the 60 years I’ve been on this planet is that while liars “figure” all sorts of schemes to dup the willing masses, the underlying true math always wins. If those 20% Liberals didn’t win another Presidency, Governorship, the Republicans maintained control of the majority of the State legislatures as they do now, Republicans kept control of the House and the Democrats just kept 41 or more reliable votes in the Senate virtually nothing would change regarding that which is going to push us into the Abyss. Existing laws/legislation has to change to undo this mess. The Democrats threaten anarchy and violence just when they can’t pile on more to the mess they’ve made over the last 100 years of government control. The Republicans celebrate like the first 4th of July when they just slow down the “progressive” march to hell. Meanwhile the underlying fiscal math marches on toward the cliff. At some point you can’t stop this slide into the Abyss. With the bulk of government cost skewed onto a relatively small number of citizens and nearly half paying nothing to support government and nearly a third paying no taxes at all the Math is going to win here probably before I assume room temperature in say 20 years from now (statistically speaking). I’ve said this before to deaf ears that the time for moderation has passed and with each passing year the choices narrow from bad to really bad to terrible. Somebody’s Ox is going to get sacrificed. Whose is about the only variable left to be determined.
Rational people with well-intentioned motives can put to paper all sorts of ways out of our fiscal mess but at no time in our history has there been the focused political will to hold to a consistent path long enough in such matters to matter. There has always been calamity followed by some sober realizations that there are universal truths in life. You don’t have to be a cynic to grasp the nature of man and accept that Democracies commit suicide eventually. Most people will not vote against their own self interests. Adams said that our form of government is only fit for moral people. We are not a moral people any longer on so many levels to dwell on here.
The Math, the Math, the Math always wins.

Michael Fumento (could that be Esperanto for David Frum???), who recently entered rehab for his former nasty wingnut obsessions, just published quite a screed over at Salon, which in its kneejerk lefty raging glory, puts the Puffington House to shame! Salon maybe isn't quite the MSM, but of Fumento's spittle-flecked wide ranging denunciations, the one of Rep. Allen West's labeling some 75 (or however many) members of the Democrat's "Progressive" caucus as "communists" is almost perfectly invalidated by the Progressive-Stalinist-Maoist epigones amongst Salon's commentariat, who generally find Frumento's mea culpa too little too late, and certainly aren't welcoming him to their camp with rosewater and garlands. I just read the linked piece. If Mr. Fumento wished to demonstrate a true act of courage, he might try to publish his thoughts on the matter here, as opposed to Salon.

I doubt liberalism will ever be dead. As long as there are people out there with no self esteem it will offer them a way of life. The catch is that it doesn't last. The other peoples money doesn't last forever and the so called other people get tired of forking it out. That time is now.
vigilant| 5.24.12 @ 10:50PM
Joseph, liberalism will never be dead as long as human nature is alive. It can be countered, but conservatives haven't done that very effectively. And we moan about how things got to this state. Yes, the time is now, but politicians won't do the job for us.

Mr Tyrrell, I like the article, as your statements about the leftwing media, especially in your book, is true.
I must take the notion that to belie oneself for not being accepted by the liberal media outlets, major or minor, broadcast, radio, print, etc., is not something that should be delved upon, but rather something that should be worn as a badge of honor.
In other words, whether it's the far left media, or the Rightwing establishment media, intolerance, prejudice, and biased censorship by either personal attacks, or by a deliberate omission, of even by the new censorship tool of internet banning, thus silencing your free speech, is what they use and how they use it to stifle one's opinions, statements, and views which they dislike for whatever reason or manner, without so much as an explanation, especially in this age of radical Obama liberal mentality, which may I say is on both sides of the political aisle, is extremely repugnant and repulsive to what Freedom and Liberty is all about.. Just ask any Tea Party Reagan Conservative.
I just wish I had the smarts and education and knowledge like you and Andrew Breitbart had to be a professional writer, blogger, and investigative journalist, and set up your own conservative web team website, etc and so on, if one does not have the money to start a cable news outlet like Fox News.
As it is, I am but a simple but persistent layman blogger post commentator, who has my fair share of the same maltreatment from both side of the political media spectrum. As when your enemies, those who do not like to hear the truth, try to use every possible means to silence you, in whatever area you work in or out of, is a constant issue of contention when advocating what you believe and know to be true factually and righteously, as do all of us Reagan Tea Party Constitutional Conservatives know. And as a retired US Military person after 20 years, I know that battles are always hard fought and come with emotional and even physical scars.
Keep up the good work and good fight Mr Tyrrell.

OK One Mediator..., please explain. What is this "Bible-believing Christian" business? What Christian wouldn't believe in the Bible? Is this a new code word among fundamentalists and evangelials.
I just want to understand what it means to you.
Only One Mediator| 5.28.12 @ 1:33PM
Jeamar,
In order to be a true Christian, Jesus says we must love not only Him, but His Words. He says we must not only believe in Him, but obey His Words. (As best as possible, and by His Grace!).
Religion says it's OK to believe in teachings that aren't biblical, and in fact, opposite of Jesus' Own Words.
These false teachings are what leads the Religionists to look at true Christians with the eyes of "heretic" or "Bigot", if we speak out against the false teachings.
As an example, you have been taught that there are "fundamentalists" and "evangelicals", as if that is something wrong, or weird, when in fact Jesus commands ALL Christians to preach His Gospel to the World.
The word fundamental having to with with sticking to His actual Words, and not straying, and the word evangelical having to do with preaching the Gospel.
Hope that helped and glad you asked!

Mainstream media (a Limbaugh coinage?) are not mainstream. They flow in their own current. They have given up trying to report the news for attempting to shape the news. Someday newspapers will revive by learning that their old ideal -- while honored too often in the breach -- of printing the truth as far as it can be found, is the way to economic success. Broadcast, cable, internet and whatever comes along may need to follow suit. Of course, there will always be room for opinion, which now, unfortunately, seems to rule.
