Loose Canons

Losing the World to Win Reelection

That’s the secret to Mr. Obama “mastery” of foreign policy.

It’s more and more difficult to write about the Islamist war against Western civilization. Not because there is too little to write, or because the fronts in that war are quiet. It’s tough to do because fewer people seem to give a damn each week.

Maybe the stark ironies of the war could bestir people to think about it. For those who still care, here are a few of those ironies that would be fodder for late night comedians if they weren’t so bloody serious.

As usual, there is Obamaworld and — on the other side of the looking glass — there’s reality.

The “Arab Spring” broke out in March of last year. Since then, dictators in Egypt and Libya have been replaced by Islamist governments, both of which will prove to be as bad or worse than the dictators they replaced. (NB: I use the term Islamist instead of “radical Islamist” because the word “radical” is a redundancy. There is no form of Islamism — as opposed to Islam — that isn’t inherently radical, supportive of terrorism and Islamic global hegemony.)

Meanwhile, back in Syria, the Arab Spring revolt is now over a year old. Which brings us to the irony of the week.

Yesterday’s Washington Post had a long knuckle-rubbing article about whether Syria’s stockpile of chemical weapons might fall into the hands of “militants,” WaPo’s latest euphemism for jihadis. Trudging through a story that was meant to assure us that our spec ops guys would seize the chemical weapons before the “militants” grabbed them, I came across the following:

While the stockpiles appear secure at the moment, they could be plundered or simply abandoned if Syrian troops are beaten back by increasingly well-armed rebels or by al-Qaeda militants who have been streaming into the country from Iraq in recent weeks, intelligence officials say.

Setting aside the term “al-Qaeda militants” for the moment, how many al-Q’s does it take to make a weeks-long stream of them? Five? Five hundred? And who believes that we’ll have good enough intelligence in time for our spec ops guys to seize the chemical weapons before al-Qaeda (or Hizballah) does?

We’ve been assured time and again that al Qaeda has been defeated in Iraq and reduced to a token force in Afghanistan. On May 1, Obama said that the defeat of al Qaeda is “within our reach” and that we have broken the Taliban’s “momentum” in Afghanistan (whatever that means). But why can’t the Taliban as rapidly regain its momentum there as al Qaeda has in Iraq?

Taliban leader Mullah Omar is still very much alive (probably in a comfy condo somewhere in Pakistan) and is probably mullahing over the Taliban’s slogan: “Americans have the watches, but we have the time.” Obama’s latest agreement with Afghan President Karzai requires Afghan permission for spec ops raids on suspected Taliban, ending the effectiveness of those raids and putting the lives of our guys at risk due to the near-certainty of leaks to the Taliban of any planned raids.

When he committed American forces to war in Libya, Obama’s administration justified it by saying it was authorized by a UN Security Council resolution. Not a constitutional congressional authorization for war, which Obama apparently believes is irrelevant. And the irony was that then-Defense Secretary Bob Gates said that there were no U.S. interests at risk in Libya. Regardless of the UN, our intervention in Libya was a bad idea but removing Assad isn’t.

Syria, since 1979, has been a designated state sponsor of terrorism. Damascus has been a virtual terrorist hiring hall, with terror groups using it as an operational base as well as raising and banking funds and gathering and stockpiling arms for their use. Hizballah — the terrorist group that has more American blood on its hands than any other except al Qaeda — is a Syrian proxy force also supported by Iran. If ever a regime deserved to be toppled, it is Syria’s.

The NATO summit that began yesterday in Chicago is intended to provide political and financial cover for our withdrawal from Afghanistan. The European governments attending the summit with Obama and Hamid Karzai won’t be willing to contribute more funding to help pay the $4 billion per year cost of the Afghanistan effort. Given the mess in the Speurozone, they can’t afford to.

The greatest irony of the year is that Obama is touted as a master of national security and foreign policy. Yes, an operation he approved killed bin Laden. But the only other evidence of that mastery is the Nobel Peace Prize he was awarded in 2009, apparently in anticipation of his great deeds. His record is, simply, appalling.

Remember Honduras? In 2009, after the Honduran supreme court removed dictator wannabe Manuel Zelaya, who was constitutionally precluded from succeeding himself, the Obama administration labeled it a “coup d’état” and refused to stand behind the democratic temporary government. (Zelaya’s successor was later chosen in a national election.)

More Hasbara from the crazy Netanyhu ministry of propaganda. The combined Security Services of the USA have said Iran is not building nuclear weapons at this time. So has the Sec. Of Defense and our Chiefs of staff. None of these people want a war with Iran espcially after 10 years of wastefull and losing wars in Iraq and Afganistan. Sane Israelis like Yucal Diskin fomer head of the Shin Bet, Pardo, the current head of the Mossad, as well as numerous other Israeli Generals and former Security service people want no war, because it is a stupid idea. It would possibly lead to another world war.

Now the signs are all around that there will be a peace agreement with Iran. Iran has attacked no-one in over 300 years. It has the legal right to enrich Urainiam under it NPL treaties. There is no evidence that it is violating those treaties. Americans by a vast majority want no more wars.
Romney is an idiot for pushing more chickenawk wars. He has no experince on foreign policy. If he keeps this up he will lose the vast majority of women, young people and independents.

Jack in Wi.| 5.21.12 @ 7:11AM

Doug Bandow, the best writer on this site, has called Romney a complete Know Nothing on foreign policy who is led around by the nose by same Neocons who sunk Bush. This magazine would do everyone a favor by reprinting that essay, instead of more of the same from Mr. Babbin. Bandow's essay was devastating.

We should do with Iran, what Nixon did with China. We should end sanctions, send an Ambassador, negotiate our differences, open up trade, education, and cultural relations. The price of oil would plummet and the world would be a far better place. Israel is just going to have to learn how to live in the neighborhood it stole. The USA is bankrupt and can't afford to carry that failed state any longer.

Zbigniew Mazurak| 5.21.12 @ 7:22AM

Kid, Romney knows more about foreign policy than you or Bandow will ever know. That's all you need to know.

Purp| 5.21.12 @ 7:48AM

Romney? Are you serious? Oh, maybe he has one of his 14 villas around the world where he can keep an eye on Russia or Iran "from his house", ala Sarah Palin... hmmm? Ya know, his foreign policy experience.

Purp, you simply cannot discuss a thing without lying, can you. Governor Palin never said that - fact is that was said on SNL and as good Alinsky foolowers, the media perpetuated the lie. Now, we dont need to rehash all the things Obama has said, has done, and continues to do to destroy this country - I just wanted to call out your lie once again and remind the readers of AS how irrelevant you are.

I heard what Sarah Palin said in her rambling, nonsensical response. Trust me, what she said was far more troubling than what SNL said Palin said. Palin said of her foreign policy credentials "as Putin visits the United States, how do you think he gets here? He flies over Alaska, and we keep our eye on him when he rears his head. " - and that from a possible VP or President of the United States - please. The woman's a dope.
For your information, Obama saved this country from certain ruin - as did GW Bush before him when he passed TARP. Without the Auto Rescue, TARP, and the Recovery Act, we'd be in a lot worse shape than we are. Economy is growing, wars are ending, Bin Laden is dead and Obama will be re-elected. Everything is better than it was 4 years ago. If you're honest with yourself, you know it too.

How much more money that we DON'T have to we have to spend. The economy is not improving. You have absolutely NO PROOF that TARP, the stimulus, the auto bailouts, or anything else Obozo and the Democrats have done "saved" the country. I've got proof that they have not helped. Unemployment is high, the number of existing jobs is LOWER than 4 years ago. More people are on food stamps and government assistance. And all your side can say is "more of the same, a lot more!"

There comes a time when rational people look at the results, and say, this isn't working, time to try something else. But you dumbass liberals always say, it would work if we spend a lot more money on it!

We're out of money, you spent it all, we're out of patience, and we're running out of time.

You're just an idiot troll, purp.

Purp| 5.21.12 @ 11:13AM

Of course, Chuck that is what you've heard on Fixed News. You can twist statistics any way you like - and they do. Doesn't make it the truth, now does it?
You don't provide proof, so I need not provide you any. But 4 million jobs created by Obama's administration in 4 years is greater than Bush's 3.9 million in 8 years. And, yet, you are still confused. And that's while Bush grew the Federal government enormously. Under Obama it has shrunk in size.
No need to call names - sticks and stones - remember grammar school? Ya know that thing you dropped out of?

Von Mises Jr| 5.21.12 @ 12:00PM

Can you cite the source of your statistics, troll? I am sure it wasn't an economics tome? Or if it is, perhaps you can cite it since I probably read it and can explain it to you.

TrueBlue | 5.21.12 @ 4:39PM

She was making the point, as was also stated (in a rather roundabout way that most likely confused the Liberals) but conveniently forgotten, that the fact Putin had to fly over Alaska gave her more foreign policy experience than Obama. It wasn't to say that she had any, it was to point out that trying to blast her lack of experience was stupid given that Obama's experience level on the subject was on the same and nobody on the Left was willing to acknowledge it, ie. NONE.

chuck| 5.21.12 @ 10:40AM

If your horse is lame, and the stream has become a torrent, then you might want to change horses. Stick with Obull$hit and drown, or change horses and survive.

Purp, you are sounding more and more desperate everyday. And dumber.

Purp| 5.21.12 @ 11:16AM

And, yet, even RealClearPolitics has Obama capturing 243 Electoral Votes to Romney's 170. And, that's with 7 or 8 of the 10 States in question being typically RED states. Hmmm, me desperate? YOU are the one supporting plastic man, dog torturer, job destroyer, "BAIN in the a**" Richie Romney, not me. You're gonna lose and you can't stand it.

JP| 5.21.12 @ 11:48AM

Real Clear Politics uses a model that assumes that every single state Obama won in 2008 is his to lose in 2012. Some may say this is the pragmatic approach; thier polling predictions are running into problems with reality. For instance, they have Obama ahead of Mitt by 16 points in North Carolina; they have Obama even with Mitt in Indiana; they have Missouri trending towards Obama despite the fact that the DNC is beginning to shut down thier operations there. They have Obama in a double digit lead in Ohio and Florida despite the fact that both of these states repudiated his and his party's policies in 2010 on statewide basis.

Hey, Real Clear may be correct. But I tend to look at recent trends and turn-outs for both parties during the primaries. And looking at those numbers there are some serious problems developing for Obama. First of all, all of the Swing States are either in play or are trending GOP (or both). Again look at Missouri. It's a state Obama won in 2008; but his numbers there are so bad that he is closing down most of his operations there in order to concentrate on other swing states. Ditto for North Carolina and Indiana. Virginia is too early to tell; but projected turnout of Dem voters there is way down from 2008. Ditto for Florida. As a matter of fact, if turn-out does become the main factor, Obama will lose Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Missouri, Indiana, Iowa, Virginia, and Colorado. To make matters worse for him, New Mexico, Oregon, and perahps even Wisconin are very much in play at this early date. Pennsylvania is a toss-up, as is New Jersey.

What should worry Dems is that it is only May and Obama's strategy that was so carefully put together in 2010-11 is in tatters. He will lose the Catholic/Religious vote (which hold quite a few women); Africian Americans are not happry with him. Yes, they go over to Obama by 90%; but projected numbers will be down by as much as 15% from 2008.

If anything, it could very well by Obama losing in a landslide -taking the Senate down with him.

Purp| 5.21.12 @ 3:17PM

Why would you even consider a primary on the Democratic side, when there isn't even a contender to challenge the President? Talk about useless numbers. That's a real stretch, bud. Much more interesting is that Richie isn't winning by 90+% in the primary states now that he has no contenders in the race but him. That means people that don't like him are voting for Santorum or Gingrich or Paul. Much more troubling for the GOP, don't you agree?
I don't know what RealClearPolitics you're looking at, but NC is +1 for Romney today.

Frekki| 5.21.12 @ 3:33PM

Purp: Or should I call you Punk? The most important and cogent reason for militant opposition to obama is the DANGER that his greed, hypocrisy, and stupidity create when he dabbles in foreign policy. We need obama mucking around with foreign nations about as much as a chipmunk needs a bowling ball. You obama accolytes ignore this danger, but those of us who are not blinded by the colostomy bag that is obama are very aware of the incompetence with which this jerk-wad conducts what he laughingly calls foreign relations.

You don't make clear what the h** you're talking about. Would you like to try again with a cogent, lucid argument that someone could actual take issue with or agree with the substance. The epithets and screeds against Obama just mean one thing - you don't like him. So what?

" Romney Foreign Policy Spokesman Quits.

The Romney campaign issued a statement saying that it had sought to keep Mr. Grenell from quitting. And according to some Republicans, while Mr. Grenell’s sexual orientation was not an issue for the campaign, the Romney team had cut Mr. Grenell out of the loop on some issues after feeling a surprising pressure from some social conservatives.

The pressure from the right was all the more surprising because Mr. Grenell was widely seen as a loyal conservative during eight years as the director of communications for four ambassadors to the United Nations during the Bush administration. He was particularly close to John R. Bolton, the diplomat and lawyer known for his personal bluntness and hawkishness. "

To Ken: At the moment, Barack H. Obama would be as good a definition as any.

joinamerica| 5.21.12 @ 7:33AM

In the 1930's hundreds of thousands of protestors marched around England, demanding that Hitler be appeased, insisting that he meant no harm. Their miscalculation ultimately led to the deaths of one hundred million people. We can see the identical miscalculation in several of the posts here. Israel is a Democracy. And should be supported by all Democracies. Iran is a tyranny. And a dangerous one. Shame on Obama to leave to Israel, the defense of the free world. Which is precisely what Obama is doing.

Purp| 5.21.12 @ 7:50AM

Luckily Iran is not the industrial powerhouse that Germany was at the time Hitler came to power. As the #1 European economy, Hitler commanded quite a juggernaut. Iran, not so much. So calm your fear mongering. Iranian leaders know it too.

TLP| 5.21.12 @ 8:40AM

I would point out to our Resident Genius that "Germany" did not have an Atomic Weapon, nor was it feverishly working 24/7/365 on building one, but I'm pretty sure that It would fall on deaf ears, as I'm sure that our boy has got himself a picture of Tamara Holder, his pants pulled down, and a bottle of Jergens, wailing away on Alan Brooks' favourite thing in the world, as he imagines that he has had his GAY PIMP deliver the WHORE - Tamara Holder - to his room, instead of the "REVEREND" Jesse Jackson having her.

Is ANYONE surprised?

Purp| 5.21.12 @ 8:46AM

Just as disgusting as ever - amazing how you know what all you need to get your jollies .. is that what you do, Timmy.
Of course, you can't prove anything about what you said about Iran, can you? It's all supposition, innuendo and 1/2 truths. But that didn't stop GW Bush from invading Iraq for their WMD and Al Qaeda connections, did it? Right wing fear mongering is all it is. We've seen the movie, move along.

chuck| 5.21.12 @ 10:45AM

So, if and when Iran develops a nuclear weapon, and Tel Aviv disappears under a mushroom cloud, will you be cheering alongside Jack and Clint?

Purp| 5.21.12 @ 11:22AM

Of course not - but that's exactly what GW Bush said about Iraq ... and you don't see the comparison?
Besides, I am confident THIS president doesn't need an all out invasion to stop an insect from disturbing the neighborhood. President Obama has been able to do what GW Bush couldn't do in his dreams - track, find, and kill Osama Bin Laden.

Paul Kotik| 5.21.12 @ 11:32AM

It was fantastic how Barack leapt out of the helicopter, ran into that dark house and gunned down the formidable Osama all by himself.

Wait, no, it was pathetic how little Barry finally summoned the nerve to say "Uh, okay" when presented with a plan by the military, and how Obamazombies like Purp pissed themselves when 60 of our baddest SEALS crashed only one helicopter in the course of gunning down a sick old geezer watching porn on his telly in his pyjamas.

You do realize that Bin Laden won, don't you? In oncology, a cancer survivor is one who lives 5 years after diagnosis. In Muslim terror, living 10 years after doing 9/11 is winning. Killing Bin Laden in 2011 was operationally meaningless, and empty even of propaganda value. If the published accounts of the deed are true, it was a botched op against the softest of soft targets, and for no serious reason.

Nancy in NC| 5.21.12 @ 1:43PM

And it took almost a year, with a scapegoat in the background, to give the go ahead.

Obuma would be hard pushed to stop an insect from invading his underwear. I'm sure this will come as a complete surprise to you, perp, but he didn't do a damn thing except say go. That must be very difficult. And he takes the credit for the Seals' work. What a genius.

Purp,
You seem to lack on your history of post WWI Germany. The similarities to how Germany was and Iran has been basically left to build their weapons of choice with virtually no intervention by the powers that be had a lot to do with a war to come. When Germany built up her military with no one standing up and confronting her, Hitler felt empowered. We are doing to same thing with Iran. Like Germany, Iran is led by a madman. If left alone he WILL build a nuclear weapon. He has stated time and time again that it is his intent to destroy a standing member of the United Nations and yet no one, not a single government has done anything except for santions. How is it that one member of the United Nations can threaten to destroy another member of the United Nations and the UN not become involved? Bad things happen when good men do nothing. It is in no ones interest to see Tel Aviv or any other city in the world with a mushroom cloud over it, and once it happens you can't undo it. Ahdmenanutjob and the ayatohlla's need to go. Jimmy Certer empowered them in 1979 and their time needs to come to an end.
Purp, the man you are so infactuated with,Barack Hussein Obama knows what he's doing, you are right about that. It's what he's doing that is so sick and you don't see it. Even you're not that sick.

ebonystone| 5.22.12 @ 5:24PM

"When Germany built up her military with no one standing up and confronting her, Hitler felt empowered. "

Germany began re-building its military and violating the terms of the Versailles Treaty under the Weimar Republic, years before Hitler came to power. And France did stand up to Germany, or at least tried to. They sent troops to occupy the Ruhr in 1922, but received no support from their former allies, the UK and US. Later in the '20's, France again tried to get sanctions against German treaty violations, but again the UK and US opposed them, and France had to back down; it was in no position to face Germany alone. With Hitler, the German rearmament only accelerated and became more brazen. The UK and US continued to look the other way.

W| 5.21.12 @ 5:13PM

Purp sounds like Jimmy Carter. Thanks to Jimmy Iran went from being our ally to our enemy, taking our people hostage, and supporting terrorrism against Americans and Israel since 1979.

It also has 500 atomic weapons, is led by a lunatic, and has been threatening the world with nuclear blackmail for 40 years.

Israel is not on par with the aggressiveness of Hitler's Germany. If it were the entire middle east would be in their possession by now. The Obamanator, on the other hand, has bent over backward to appease the Islam countries in the middle east, and to be quite frank, he's getting little milage out of his efforts but that doesn't stop his financial aide to them . The arabs and persians are going to continue what they do best, threaten, demonstrate, and bomb. I well remember the high and mighty making the deal during Clinton's years. Signing away the useless desert to make peace with the Egyptians. It worked for a few years, now the Egyptians are heating up, and Iran is boiling over making anti-Isreal threats almost daily. Never before has a small nation had so much at stake as Israel. Enemies are on all sides. And the posters above want Israel to just melt back into the sea?

ChurchSox| 5.21.12 @ 8:48AM

Why are there still al-Qaeda militants in Iraq? Let alone enough to pose a serious threat to the Syrian army?

Mike W| 5.21.12 @ 9:18AM

al-Qaeda is in Iraq because we created a new territory for them in 2003 when we invaded. Iraq did not have an al-Qaeda problem under Saddam.

So the Islamists and the Muslim Brotherhood and AQ are part of his constituency, you see. He's got to represent THEM, too.

Cobalt| 5.21.12 @ 9:51AM

This "citizen of the world" was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009.

What an incompetent joke, this "citizen of the world" is.

James Biggar| 5.21.12 @ 3:31PM

The Iran Boogie Man keeps appearing on A.S. and it is a classic Red Herring!

When there is nothing to write about someone writes about the looming Iran Nuclear threat! That is why we must continue to fund both Guns and Butter in our faltering economy!

By now we all should understand that nobody is doing anything in or to Iran without first getting approval from Russia and China and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization or Russia's "Collective Security Treaty Organization." (CSTO)

Here is a nice WIKI Primer explaining why:

I often disagree respectfully with Mr. Babbin's opinions.

Even in this article, I believe his views on the Arab Spring are unconvincing.

Nevertheless, the views he expresses in this article on the Obama foreign policy in general, and on Syria specifically, are spot on.

Jonathan| 5.21.12 @ 9:39AM

The end of our freedom is at hand unless all the American people get off their butts and do something..a 10 million person march on DC and remove all the scum in our government and have new elections. Congress just approved for the military to go to war with Iran..the Russians and the Chinese have both made it clear that they will not allow this..do we want WWIII? Congress has sold out to this socialist scum in the WH and the world will pay a high price for this..especially the American citizens, and our soldiers. Now is the time to stop this madness, time for action, not words. We must take our Government back NOW!!

Obie Wan| 5.21.12 @ 10:18AM

Well,I wasn't a fan of George Bush's Iraq war from the get go, however to end the Iraq conflict only to get us way deeper in Afghanistan with apparently no goal beyond just being there sucks just as bad. I supported Bush after 9/11 because we had to do something but 11 yrs later it's passed time to get out. The rest of Obama's foreign policies are like his domestic policies, about as bad as you can get. I'm not sure dumping Obama at this point is going to make enough difference,we're pretty far over the edge, but it sure can't hurt !!!

John Q. Public| 5.21.12 @ 11:02AM

The American people jumped the shark when they put Obama in the White House.

Everything that's been done, and NOT done, by The One, since then, was foreordained. Tiresomely predictable.

America, as well as the freedom loving nations of the world, resembles someone with two black eyes, a broken nose, gashes in the rear of the head, and a wrenched back. Not dead yet, but still getting the crap beat out of her.

In humanity’s present degraded level, wherein the level of consciousness is so low that material prosperity is leading to rampant obesity in economic powerhouses like the USA, why should anyone who’s awake expect the situation to be any different in the noosphere? Not only are you what you physically eat, but likewise you are what you psychically “eat”---aka take in and process, in order to form your opinions and inform your actions.

What is required, in an eternal truth way?

MIRRORS!

These “through-a-glass-darkly” days, though, we are living in a fun house, with people seemingly competing to create the most wickedly distorting mirrors, that in essence try to make deadly fat humans LOOK LIKE they are skinny. This applies in all dimensions, these Narcissistic days. It is no accident the penultimate Narcissist was elevated to become president!

Why don’t you pinch yourself? I don’t mean just a quick one-and-done pinch, like that hoary saying about doing so, when everything is going so great it seems like a dream. Do it 24/7, with both hands!

Well, basically, that’s what’s happening. There are myriad ways to “pinch yourself” sans hands!

How about electing BHO, for one?

Or, continuing to overeat stupor foods, day after day?

Bring in the mirrors.

There is a present actuality, than which there is no other. And, truly, mirrors abound! They are iridescently coming into Being, constantly.

Look---you can’t miss them.

See.

And, change your act---stop pinching yourself.

Havoc| 5.21.12 @ 11:22AM

It's been eleven years - and Jed Babbin still can't summon the courage to say, "The problem is Islam".

Paul Kotik| 5.21.12 @ 11:33AM

Amazing, isn't it?

But that's what we have Dutch parlaimentarians for, thankfully.

Red Phillips | 5.21.12 @ 12:26PM

Mr. Babbin, has it occured to you that "fewer people seem to give a damn" because they are no longer buying the fear mongering of which this essay is a museum quality specimen. The "War on Terror" is off the radar screen of the majority who are more concerned about the economy and the right is more and more embracing non-interventionism (the natural home of the right).

Red Phillips | 5.21.12 @ 12:35PM

Obama is the President of the United States of America. How then can he "lose the world?" It isn't his to lose. This is the sort of default globalist internationalism that interventionists presuppose. This is one reason why interventionism is not conservative.

shipley130| 5.21.12 @ 12:48PM

The problem with the war on terrorism is that Americans have been so willing to destroy the terrorists that it opened the back door to killing Americans (Awlaki). We should have seen this coming but now we need to stop the flying of drones over America. If we don't, it's game over for our freedom.

shipley130| 5.21.12 @ 12:53PM

Well, it's nice that Obama has not made any stupid decisions that a new president would have to deal with in 2013. Thanks, O'downgrade.

kwan| 5.21.12 @ 1:03PM

Foreign policy. Is that what they're now calling the bumbling incompetence issuing forth from the clown-circus called the Obama administration? Who's in charge of this foreign policy the Muslim Brotherhood.

Oldefarte| 5.21.12 @ 1:33PM

Please contemplate the following, in relation to 11/4/08:

'......The Trojan Horse is a tale from the Trojan War about the stratagem that allowed the Greeks finally to enter the city of Troy and end the conflict. In the canonical version, after a fruitless 10-year siege, the Greeks constructed a huge wooden horse, and hid a select force of men inside. The Greeks pretended to sail away, and the Trojans pulled the horse into their city as a victory trophy. That night the Greek force crept out of the horse and opened the gates for the rest of the Greek army, which had sailed back under cover of night. The Greeks entered and destroyed the city of Troy, decisively ending the war.
The main ancient source for the story is the Aeneid of Virgil, a Latin epic poem from the time of Augustus. The event does not occur in Homer's Iliad, which ends before the fall of the city, but is referred to in the Odyssey. In the Greek tradition, the horse is called the "Wooden Horse" (Δούρειος Ἵππος, Doúreios Híppos, in the Homeric Ionic dialect).Metaphorically a "Trojan Horse" has come to mean any trick or stratagem that causes a target to invite a foe into a securely protected bastion or space.........'

Steve| 5.21.12 @ 2:30PM

Tis is pure absurdity. We have wasted enough blood and money on all of these pointless Arab conflicts. We do not belong in the region, period! No American President should put young American lives in harm's way for such idiocy as this.

Mike W| 5.21.12 @ 3:33PM

Babbin with his typical neocon bs misses the real problem. You, as an individual, are in far more danger walking down the streets of Baltimore, St. Louis, Chicago, Philly, from local home grown terrorists also known as "youths" than you are in danger from some Muslim somewhere.

The war is at home but the neocons keep telling us it is 2002. Maybe they use their fear mongering to gain power as the Repubs did in fall of 2002.

ebonystone| 5.22.12 @ 5:45PM

Maybe, but I'm not walking down a street in Philly or St. Louis. I'm shopping at my local supermarket in my peaceful small town, and I AM in more danger from some Moslem somewhere. Just remember the people killed by the (Moslem) Beltway snipers around Washington, DC, or the pedestrians mowed down by a Moslem in a rented SUV in North Carolina.

Shaboe Delucks| 5.21.12 @ 5:02PM
