Romney Closing With Obama

But a tough campaign ahead.

Mitt Romney’s campaign is making great headway, closing with Barack Obama during this lovely month of May.

It is one thing when Rasmussen’s tracking poll puts Romney up by 2 points for May 11-14. Rasmussen is every Republican’s favorite pollster. But what does it say when even the establishmentarian CBS News/New York Times poll puts Governor Romney up by 3 points? Moreover, the average of all polls to date give President Obama only a 1.6 percentage lead, according to RealClearPolitics.

This is substantial progress since the beginning of the month when the Associated Press/GfK poll gave Obama an 8-point edge, 50-42, for the May 3-7 time frame. This rapid shift in polling may account for the Obama campaign’s nasty swerve toward negativity with an emphasis on class envy, disparagement of free markets, and vilification of successful people generally, including donors opposing the President.

And it is only going to get worse this election cycle. The Washington Examiner ran a story this week on training provided to the House Democratic Caucus “on how to inject the issue of race into nearly any political argument that takes place during the 2012 election season.”

Evidently, one Maya Wiley, a former adviser for George Soros’s Open Society Institute and founder of the Center for Social Inclusion, spoke to the Caucus on “race and fiscal policy,” and insists that all talk of cutting government spending is “racially coded.” Even Rick Santorum is accused of playing the race card by calling for cuts in spending and the welfare state. Wiley urges Democrats to steer the public dialogue away from race-neutral language. “‘Explain how each racial group is affected [by a government program], but start with people who are white,’ she wrote in her presentation. ‘Then raise racial disparities.’”

Back to the campaign, the experienced Republican politico, Ed Rogers, got it right in the Washington Post on May 9 when he asked why, despite a bruising primary and Romney supposedly “winning ugly,” the GOP “war on women,” and other negative spin about the Ryan budget, isn’t Obama “cruising” right now with a big lead?

“Romney is stronger than he has been portrayed and Obama is weaker than most people think,” wrote Rogers. “How else do you explain the current polls?”

The day before, on May 8, the Wall Street Journal’s political reporter, Gerald Seib, wrote a column on the efforts by both campaigns to build up enthusiasm among targeted voters. Seib observed that an April poll by the WSJ and NBC showed Obama leading among all voters by 6 percentage points, 49-46. “But among those who express high interest in the election — defined as those who rate their interest at a nine or 10 on a 10-point scale — Mr. Romney leads by three points, 49% to 46%.”

For Democrats, 64 percent are highly interested in the election, versus 80 percent four years ago. “By contrast, enthusiasm among Republicans actually is up a few percentage points, to 74% from 71% four years ago,” wrote Seib.

An early May USA Today/Gallup Swing State Poll revealed the two candidates to be essentially even with Obama ahead of Romney, 47-45, in the dozen battleground states that will determine the outcome of the November election. Obama had a lead of 9 percentage points in late March. However, the President is generating an edge in enthusiasm among his voters there. “For the first time, Democrats are more likely than Republicans to say they are extremely or very enthusiastic about voting — a shift from a 14-percentage point GOP advantage at the end of last year to an 11-point deficit now,” wrote Susan Page in USA Today.

However, among those polled in the swing states, 60 percent say a President Romney would do a good or very good job handling the economy as opposed to 52 percent who say the same thing about President Obama.

Republican optimists would say that Romney just won a tough primary battle with wounds still healing and Obama has an early lead in organizing in the target states, both circumstances that are going to change, are changing, rapidly.

James Collins, the celebrated author of the best-selling business book, Good to Great, tells the story of Admiral Jim Stockdale, a prisoner of war who was tortured by the Viet Cong for eight years. In response to Collins’s enquiry as to who did not make it out of the camps, Stockdale replied, “Oh, that’s easy. It was the optimists. They were the ones who said we were going home by Christmas.… You know, I think they all died of broken hearts.”

I am certain that Admiral Stockdale would not counsel pessimism in the face of challenges but realism certainly. This will be a long, grueling campaign that will make the Republican primary look like a pleasant round of croquet. It is certainly winnable, but no one who wishes Mitt Romney well can simply sit on their hands and watch this election from afar. It is time for all hands on deck.

So does this mean that by say October the Democrat strategy will be "Whenever the Republican opens his mouth, it's just code for racism!"?

This will be fun, especially because even an 'ism' can jump the shark!!!

Don't Tread On Me!

We all know Obama, Pelosi and Reid are disasters. Are Romney, Boehner, and McConnell any better? Tell me why I should be enthused by this gang?

chuck| 5.16.12 @ 8:22AM

Because they are not Obama, Pelosi, and Reid.

And seriously, Jack, you are the most negative, hate-filled MFer I've ever had the displeasure of running up on. Why don't you suck on the end of a 12 gauge until it goes off. Might help to improve your outlook.

Jack in Wi.| 5.16.12 @ 8:45AM

Sorry Chuckie. I am not a hopless shill for Bibbi and the Israeli Lobby, like you are. I actually care about this country and it's people. Why the helll should I care for a candidate, Romney, who said in a debate, that the first thing he would do as President is fly to Israel to get his marching orders from the gang over there? America and Americans First. End the Fed and end the wars. Then maybe we can make some progress.

You are a hopeless shill for the perennial do-nothing Ron Paul, though.

" Santorum: Might As Well Have Obama Over Romney

Presidential candidate Rick Santorum on Thursday said Republicans should give President Barack Obama another term if Santorum isn't the GOP nominee and for a second day compared rival Mitt Romney to an Etch A Sketch toy.

Santorum reiterated an argument he has made before: The former Massachusetts governor is not conservative enough to offer voters a clear choice in the fall election and that only he can provide that contrast.

"You win by giving people a choice," Santorum said during a campaign stop in Texas. "You win by giving people the opportunity to see a different vision for our country, not someone who's just going to be a little different than the person in there."

Santorum added: "If they're going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk of what may be the Etch A Sketch candidate for the future."

Santorum was referencing Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom's comment Wednesday that "everything changes" for the fall campaign. "It's almost like an Etch A Sketch," he said on CNN. "You can kind of shake it up and we start all over again."

The remark reignited criticism of Romney as the type of politician who will say or do anything to win."

'....NewsmaxNev. Republicans Wary of Paul Role inStateParty Wednesday, May 16, 2012 02:25 PMBy: Sandy Fitzgerald Many Nevada Republicans appear to be turning their back on the state party, which is increasingly being dominated by Ron Paul loyalists who took over the state convention this year and elected a majority of delegates to the Republican National Convention.
According to the Las Vegas Sun, political observers say long-time party activists have lost confidence in the state-level apparatus to get Republicans of all stripes elected.
They fear the party organization might spend more time trying to get Paul nominated over Romney at the convention, “or pushing his libertarian philosophy, than being the backbone of the GOP election effort,” the newspaper said.
As a result, many traditional Republicans have turned to contributing more to conservative groups, like Americans for Prosperity, and the Republican National Committee, to help ensure the party delivers a tough contest for Democrats in the November elections. “It has become evident after the convention that the new leadership for the party is not interested in getting Republicans elected as much as moving an ideology forward,” said Mendy Elliot, a longtime Republican fundraiser.
“The purpose of the party is to get Republicans elected and register Republicans. Until that focus is shifted back, it’s hard for mainstream Republicans to understand the purpose of the party.”According to the Sun, the change in the state party staffing, which includes Paul supporter Michael McDonald as its new chairman, and other issues have turned off GOP elected leaders in the state as well. Most of them “skipped the state convention earlier this month and have shown little willingness to get into the muck of rebuilding the state party,” the Sun said. Some changes in the way Nevada Republicans are preparing for the November elections have already become obvious. Americans for Prosperity, for example, has taken over voter registration and get-out-the-vote efforts that were once the domain of the state party, the Sun reported.....'

Ron Paul isn't retiring from the fight. He will continue to be a thorn in the side of the establishment till the day he dies and beyond. He has already won, in some respects, most people want the wars ended, the troops home, the Fed audited, and all foreign aid cut.

William Kristol in a debate at a Manhatten liberal synagogue said that Joe Liebermann would be the next Secretary of State in a Romney administation. Most of the Jewish people there groaned at the thought. The thought that this could happen makes me want to puke.

RCV| 5.16.12 @ 12:23PM

The Jewish people in the audience likely groaned because they're liberal Democrats who dislike Lieberman. You want to puke because he's a Jew.

That's the difference.

DTOM| 5.16.12 @ 9:14AM

And if you cannot perceive that Romney is a couple of Trillion times better as President than Obama would be for the next four years, your "caring" for this country is less than worthless -it's evil.

You really need to stand back and look at yourself. You are a mess! Stop talking and listen to yourself sometime! You'd be shocked at how hateful and ignorant you really are. All that Reagan admiration notwithstanding.

You would not fall under Reagan's 80% rule. The Gipper would disavow you - put you out to pasture for your destructive, hateful, unhelpful speech. All the while saying that you were a good fellow, just a little confused.

Read your own writings, Jack. Read it and weep.

Al Adab| 5.16.12 @ 1:20PM

Gentlemen:
Haven't you figured out yet that the mainline republicans are the accomodationist party?

The GOP rejected Romney four years ago for being left of McCain. Romney continues the long line of Dewy, Ford, Bush 41, Dole, McCain "moderates" who constantly lead the party to defeat. We continue to follow them why?

W| 5.16.12 @ 1:41PM

Al
Romney was not rejected because he was left of McCain. Romney ran to the right of McCain, which is not difficult. Romney was endorsed by Herman Cain and Rick Santorum in 2008 as the conservative alternative to McCain.

Huckabee joined forces with McCain in 08. McCain ran an Obama-campaign against Romney, always accusing him of being wealthy, and making money while he, McCain was in the military. He played the war prisoner hero card well. Romney had too much class to respond that McCain divorced his first wife and then married Cindy, worth hundreds of millions, when he retired from the military.

Al Adab| 5.16.12 @ 2:10PM

W:
Fair enough. Lots of history, but does not change the accomodationists into Conservatives. Father George was, along with Rockefeller, one of the leaders opposed to the Conservative Movemnt and campaigned against its candidate, in the very beginning. Yes, I hold that against the son. Has he ever disavowed the policiesd of Dad or admitted that George was wrong back then?

W| 5.16.12 @ 3:05PM

Al
I don't like Rockefeller. He sabotaged Nixon in 1960 and Goldwater in 1964. From what I read George Romney opposed Godwater because Barry voted against the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Rockefeller was a rich, spoiled, power hungry
professional politician. George worked in private industry, rose to president of American Motors, and then ran for governor of Michigan.

Our only hope to reduce the nanny state is for Romney to win with a Republican Congress. If Obama wins, it is over. We would need 67 in the Senate to override Obama's vetos. Impossible to win 67.

W| 5.16.12 @ 9:27AM

Like I say it is all the truth. I have never written any antisemitic comments on this site. That includes the few that you cherry picked. Take so called holocaust. There is nothing antsemitic about that. It is the so called holcaust. The word Holocaust and word Shoah were not applied to the murder of the Jews in World War 2until the 60's. before that the word genocide was invented by a Jewish professor to describe what happened. The word was applied to many other mass murders. As the Jews have always thought they were special they wanted special words for their tribulations. They tried to use the word holocaust from the Bible instead. I* think the word is inaccurate. The original meaning meant a voluntary sacrifice and the burning of that sacrifice in a fire. I don't think there was anything voluntary about what happend to the Jews in WW2. I also don't think that a murdered Jew is any more important then a murdered China man, Russian, Cambodian, Rawandan, Biafran, Congolese or baby in the womb. Murder is murder and every victim is a child of God.

One thing to consider with Ron Paul is that he would not do anything to alienate the GOP, such as endorsing a third party candidate because his son is a rising star within the party and may make his own presidential run in the future. Wait til romney is locked into the nomination, it will be a whole new ball game. Obama is going to make mince meat out of romney. Romney is at least ten times more pathetic than mccain was, politically.

& romney in reality is a pro-communist America liberal. His intentions are to "win" by turning the right into a pro-communist America right, i.e., by taking us "left". & he is a disaster.

When the democrats get out their regime, romney & his marxist right will go down like a flaming ball of liberalism.

Where did dis here fool come from? He must be Obama's secret weapon on a kamikaze mission to save the Great Leader's hopeless attempt to get reelected. The bad news (for Obama) is the pool of saps, suckers, morons, and village idiots that Obama counts on to get reelected has shrunk due to the failure of con-man Obama's Hope and Change fallacy.

Derek Leaberry| 5.16.12 @ 11:39AM

Right now it would appear that the anti-Obama forces outnumber the Obama forces. But be careful for what you wish for. Romney shows all the signs of presidential failure. He's a flip-flopper and lacks familiarity with common folk and common problems. He's also a moderate in what would appear to be a conservative political party.

What sort of things should we expect out of Romney? Regarding immigration, John McCain has already said that Romney will reverse himself once again on immigration amnesty "reform" once he has the keys to the White House. Can anyone doubt that Romney could pull a double-switch? Without a blush. I can see the Republicans heading into the 2014 mid-terms with the general population in an uproar over something resembling the Ryan plan and conservatives in dismay and revolt with some sort of McCain-Graham-Romney plan on immigration amnesty being jammed through Congress. A Romney presidency will likely result in the Democratic takeover of Congress in 2015.

RichTex| 5.16.12 @ 12:21PM

The latest Gallup poll I saw had it Obama 46%, Romney, 45%, although I don’t know what the margin of error on that poll is. However, pay attention to what Dick Morris has said about these polls. He went back over the elections in the past 30-40 years and found that the voters who polled as undecided ended up voting for the challenger by a margin of more than 90%. (The only exception to this was with George W. Bush.) Therefore, a 46-45 Obama margin is actually a 54-46, or maybe 53-47, Romney margin.

While I certainly don’t agree with all that Morris says, he is one of the top vote number crunchers around today. And, of course, much depends upon where those votes are in the Electoral College.

Now, all that needs to happen is for Romany to avoid the Republican Establishment proclivity to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

RCV| 5.16.12 @ 12:25PM

We may actually see the reverse of the Gore/Bush election this time: Romney winning the popular vote, but Obama reelected by the electoral margin. It's hard to see how Romney puts together a winning total of state electoral votes.

W| 5.16.12 @ 12:31PM

Romney by a landslide with a Republican Congress. And Joe Lieberman as Secretary of State, Newt as Ambassador to UN, Santorum at HHS, Giuliani as Attorney General.

Al Adab| 5.16.12 @ 1:26PM

RCV may be onto something here. It is entirely possible. W, not very good cabinet picks if we want to undo the social-welfare state. Why appoint people who accept it as legitimate? Better to leave HHS vacant to wither on the vine. EPA, Dept of Ed, Dept of energy, Newt at UN not bad but Sec of State Joe? I would prefer you in that position or at least someone who understands realpolitik.

W| 5.16.12 @ 1:55PM

Al
HSS is important because of the regulations affecting health insurance and religious institutios until Obamacare is repealed. Santorum understands the issues and would carry out Romney's goals to get rid of Obamacare. It needs to be defunded in many of its programs and repeal much of its regulations.

I agree about the Energy dept and Education depts, two depts we got because of Jimmy Carter, and again we need defunding and repeal of regulations.

We need a Republican Congress with Romney to cut the layers of programs in the nanny state. This is the perfect opportunity because we have to reduce the deficit, so cutting the funding for all these worthless nanny state programs will reduce the deficit and the nanny state.

Do I have to be a natural born citizen to be Secretary of State since I am high in the line to be president? Thanks for the vote of confidence.

Do you want to be Secretary of Energy, Education, and EPA--one salary but you have to do all three?

Al Adab| 5.16.12 @ 2:18PM

W:
In my fantasies I always took a contrarian approach to cabinet appointments. Those who deny the necessity and validity of the agency are those who should be put in charge. That doesn't run to Sec of State of course and BTW no you need not be natiive born, remember Kissinger?

I would accept appointment to any - or all three - of those (as a cost cutting matter one salary is fine). About three budget cycles and they would be emasculated. Would I have to live in DC or nearby? If so no thank you. Actually, why not have the agencies located in various cities? Spread the wealth (facetious font).

W| 5.16.12 @ 2:57PM

Al
I agree with you that they should appoint people who want to cut the budget of the agency. Probably need to hire business types who have not been corrupted by govenrment "service." The dept heads usually fight to increase the budget for their depts, like a turf war. Best way is for Congress to cut the budgets across the board for all depts and agencies. They can adjust and get more efficient like private business.
Thanks for reminding me about Kissinger.
You can live at home, do video conferencing with your computer. Tell them anytime you go to DC you will fire people.

Dick Nome| 5.16.12 @ 3:42PM

W| 5.16.12 @ 6:33PM

Doctor Right| 5.16.12 @ 1:18PM

Really? Why?

Wishful thinking?

Except for the looney-lib northeast, California, Oregon, and Maryland, I see Romney running the table on Obama in a MASSIVE landslide.

And that's NOT because people love Romney; it's because they despise Obama.

Al Adab| 5.16.12 @ 1:31PM

Maybe so Dr., but you just surrendered about 250 electoral votes to him. He only needs to hold on to FL or IN or Ohio and he wins. Be very afraid. He could do it as RCV notes above and still lose the popular vote. Would that not make the heathen rage?

Doctor Right| 5.16.12 @ 2:19PM

That's hardly 250.

Let's stop the worrying; Obama is toast.

Al Adab| 5.16.12 @ 3:17PM

Add em up. CA, NY, NJ, OR, WA, IL, MI, WI, PA, MA well you get the idea.

RichTex| 5.17.12 @ 12:10PM

Here’s my prediction in electoral votes: Romney – 356; Obama – 182.

Obama wins the following states: CA, CT, DE, HI, IL, MD, MA, NJ, NY, OR, RI, VT, WA + DC. Romney wins the rest, although ME & NE allocate some electoral votes on a congressional district basis which could make a vote or two difference.

This prediction is based upon Romney running the race to win it, unlike too many past Republican candidates. I know, that is a very big proviso.

RCV| 5.17.12 @ 5:30PM

You're not just optimistic. You're delusional. Your list gives to Romney states like Minnesota and New Mexico -- states where current polling gives Obama a 14 POINT LEAD -- Maine, where current polling puts him at more than 16 POINTS ahead, and Nevada, Pennsylvania and Michigan, where his current lead exceeds 8 points in each of those states.

RichTex| 5.18.12 @ 11:06AM

Not delusional, but maybe optimistic. First of all, look at the internals of any poll before you believe them. If they include all registered voters, forget it. Even worse is if they poll adults and don’t exclude those not registered. My sister-in-law can be as strong for Candidate X as anyone, but it doesn’t make any difference because she is a Polish citizen and can’t vote in the U.S. But, she might be included in a poll of all adults. Look for polls of likely voters only.

Then, Michael Barone has a new column out in the Washington Examiner about changes in voter registration in selected states. Of the 28 states studied, only NY has any sort of increase in Democrat registrations, with DE showing a decrease in Republicans but no increase in Democrats. Looking at the states which I put into the Romney column, Republicans have increases, and/or Democrats have decreases, in ME, PA, IA, KS, NE, SD, AK, AZ, CO, NV, NM, WY, FL, KY, LA, NC, OK & WV. In a few, both parties have shown decreases, but the relative strength between them has favored the Republicans.

RCV| 5.19.12 @ 3:45PM

Look at the most respected pollers who are summarized in RealClearPolitics.com. Go over to the website of Nate Silver, who painstakingly analyzes the flaws in ever poll, and who knows more about political polling than anyone in the country. You're letting your hopes color your intellectual analysis.

RichTex| 5.20.12 @ 7:36PM

Karl Rove pointed out on Fox News Sunday that the "current polling" for some of these state polls was last done 6 months ago. Remember also that according to the polls taken just prior to the 1980 election, it was "too close to call". Yeah, right!

somnolence| 5.16.12 @ 12:42PM

The latest polls show Romney with over 300 electoral votes. Makes no difference if you or I really like him or not(and I refuse to give any money to his campaign), the alternative is Obama, who has forfeited any more chance to annihilate us all. Romney doesn't have much to worry about when the jabs are reference to high school pranks, with no defense of the Obama economic disaster.

RCV| 5.17.12 @ 5:31PM

Maybe your latest polls. But you might go over to Real Clear Politics and see what the actual polls show -- a massive Obama lead in electoral votes that Romney will be hard-pressed to overcome.

David| 5.16.12 @ 4:54PM

Mr. Mehan, the reason Rasmussen is the repubs favorite pollster is because he has been the most accurate in recent election. Soooo, nothing untoward about thinking people's trust in his polling.

Why does Bam Bam stand a good chance of re-election?

Because, as this article points out, 52% of people believe the Boy is doing or will do a GOOD or VERY GOOD job on economic matters.

52 flippin' percent!!! That is the same number who voted for him in the last election.

Where the f_ck do those morons come from. Flat out scary!!!

Fernando Dickens| 5.17.12 @ 2:23AM

RCV| 5.17.12 @ 5:32PM
