The Obama Watch

Spiking the Bin Laden Football

Barack Obama thinks that the EPA’s relationship to jobs should be the same as the Navy SEAL’s relationship to Osama bin Laden.

In May 2011, when asked by CBS News about why he would not release photos of the killing of Osama bin Laden, President Obama said, “We don’t need to spike the football.”

How much things have changed in a year.

As we’ve approached this week’s third anniversary of that happy moment when the mass murderer was lobotomized by a Navy SEAL’s bullet, bin Laden-related chest thumping has become the administration’s campaign tactic-of-the-week.

At the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday night, Barack Obama touted that “last year at this time — in fact, on this very weekend — we finally delivered justice to one of the world’s most notorious individuals.”

Even Hillary Clinton has been waxing nostalgic about the bin Laden raid, evoking images of sleep-deprived heroes (such as herself) being revived by crowds cheering outside the White House gates following news of the terrorist’s death.

In a new web ad called “One Chance,” former President Bill Clinton — oddly chummy with Obama of late — says that Obama “took the harder and the more honorable path” by ordering the raid on bin Laden’s Pakistan compound. The ad goes on to quote Mitt Romney’s 2007 comment that “It’s not worth moving heaven and earth, spending billions of dollars just trying to catch one person,” implying that a President Romney might not have ordered the assault on bin Laden given the same information that Obama had. It is a reprehensible — and literally incredible — assertion.

Not surprisingly, the Obama ad does not mention Romney’s clarification a few weeks later: his point was that bin Laden would be replaced and that killing him would not mean the end of al Qaeda. During a 2007  debate, Romney made his view on bin Laden crystal clear: “We’ll move everything to get him. But I don’t want to buy into the Democratic pitch that this is all about one person. Because after we get him, there’s going to be another and another.… It’s more than Osama bin Laden. But he is going to pay, and he will die.”

(See Romney’s remarks at about 6:40 into this video of the May 3, 2007 Republican debate.)

The Miami Herald notes several instances of Barack Obama saying that the issue of bin Laden should not be used by himself or by others (such as Hillary “Do I look as tired as I feel” Clinton) to score political points. But of course, that’s just what the president is doing now. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

The Herald also reports the Romney camp’s response to the “One Chance” ad: “The killing of Osama bin Laden was a momentous day for all Americans and the world, and Governor Romney congratulated the military, our intelligence agencies, and the President. It’s now sad to see the Obama campaign seek to use an event that unified our country to once again divide us, in order to try to distract voters’ attention from the failures of his administration. With 23 million Americans struggling for work, our national debt soaring, and household budgets being squeezed like never before, Mitt Romney is focused on strengthening America at home and abroad.”

As if the web ad weren’t hypocritical and pathetically self-serving enough, the president sat down with NBC’s Brian Williams for an “exclusive interview” to be aired on Wednesday. The interview is, according to MSNBC, “the first for network television” to be filmed inside the White House Situation Room, from where the administration’s national security team watched the bin Laden raid take place.

This is almost as much an indictment of NBC News as it is of the president, but complaining about liberal media bias is like complaining about a puppy peeing on your rug: it’s just what they do. If you don’t like it, don’t buy a puppy — and don’t watch NBC News.

The Obama administration is flustered by the lack of traction by his other recent divisive campaign tactics. It’s doing anything it can to distract from Obama’s record, pointing to the one rousing success of his administration — but one that would be hard to imagine any other president not grabbing should the same opportunity have arisen.

As Republican strategist and Romney advisor Ed Gillespie said on Meet the Press, “this is one of the reasons President Obama has become one of the most divisive presidents in American history. He took something that was a unifying event for all Americans, an event that Governor Romney congratulated him and the military and the intelligence analysts in our government for completing the mission in terms of killing Osama bin Laden. And he’s managed to turn it into a divisive, partisan, political attack that former Defense Secretary Frank Carlucci for President Reagan called ‘sad.’ John McCain called ‘shameful.’ I think most Americans will see it as a sign of a desperate campaign.”

Indeed, if there is one thing that Americans should learn from the Wednesday interview, it is that President Obama simply has nothing else he can talk about that will appeal to the broader American electorate. His record is one of economic suppression and radical leftist policy that only energizes his “Progressive” base. Even many of those can’t be too pleased with their employment prospects after more than three years of an Obama presidency. And ironically, they are the people (other than terrorists themselves) least pleased with Obama’s aggressive use of drones to kill terrorist enemies of America, one of the few laudable policies of this administration. With friends like that…

A presidential first: Obama gives a shout out to himself during his speech to the troops at Bagram yersterday. He does his usual so and so is in the house shtick then includes himself:

THE PRESIDENT: We’ve got Task Force Paladin in the house. (Hooah!) And we’ve got Task Force Defender in the house. (Hooah!) And we’ve got me in the house.

Jack in Wi.| 5.2.12 @ 7:12AM

Obama went to Afganistan to sign an agreement which would commit us to staying in Afganistan in some capacity for at least another 12 years. We will also be dumping billions of dollars into Afganistan for many more years. Why are we doing this? Obama can be attacked on a lot of issues here. He will be claiming to be bringing the troops home for Afganistan yet he still wants to be involved there.

Why was Bin Laden killed with very little attempt to take him alive. I would have offered the Seals a huge reward to the one who took Bin Laden alive, if it was possible. They love to torture people for information. Would not Bin Laden have a lot of information? Why was the body disposed of so quickly without the press even looking at it? For all we know they could have made a mistake and killed a rug merchant?

Now my old friend Ross above, claimed in a rather heated discussion we had yesterday that his man Romney would not turn over Middle East policy to the Israeli leader Bibbi Netanyahu. Well Ross: Romney has said on numerous occasions in debates and speeches that he has known Netanyahu for many years and has worked with him on numerous occasion. He has said that he would listen first to Bibbi on all Midle East issues. Bibbi wants to attack Iran and possibly bring on WW3.

Almost the whole leadership of the intelligence and military communities in Israel is against Netanyahu. They have said that Iran is a rational player and that they are not building Nuclear weapons. They think Netanyahu is dangerously out of control. That is why they have taken the unpresidented step of publically coming out and saying tht they don't want war and Netanyhu and Barak his vice premier are leading the country to disaster.

Our intelligence and military heads and lower members of the community have said the same thing. Yet we have a leadership of the Republican party who grovels at this warmongering lunatic's feet and thinks he should lead out Middle East policy. When are you neocons going to address these issues? you guys have been wrong on virtually everthing you have ever touched. Why the hell should ayone listen to you anymore?

This country is sick of wars and warmongers. Yet we have an incompetent guy running for president who would turn our Middle East policy over to a guy who even his own colleagues call incompetent and dangerously out of control. Obama has led us into many needless military actions all over the world and threatens many more. He should be easy to attack on those issues. But because we have clueless, chickenhawk running, we are giving him a free ride on the peace issue. Romney makes Obama look like St Francis of Assisi. The vast majority of the people in this country want peace. More war is a huge losing issue. Shalom!

Ross Kaminsky | 5.2.12 @ 8:13AM

Jack,

As you mention, Romney said he would "listen" to Netanyahu, not "turn over" our foreign policy to him.

Do you get the difference?

For the record, I would rather see us with much less involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq and have said so repeatedly on these pages.

In case you missed it, here it is again, in brief: Tell the political leaders and the "warlords" in each country (esp. Afghanistan) that we're leaving but that if any harm befalls any American interest anywhere that we can tie to them, the punishment will be biblical in scale and nature, and will include coating their bodies with pig blood so they can't get into Muslim heaven.

The issue here is not that I or anyone else want a war. It's that Iran seems hell-bent on the destruction of another nation, and the only democracy in the Middle East. A nuclear Iran massively changes the balance of power in the region, regardless of your view of Israel. We should do everything we can, including air strikes, to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapon capability. But I would prefer to see some sort of plausibly deniable special ops move to take out the regime.

Jack in Wi.| 5.2.12 @ 8:52AM

Ross with all due respect Iran is not building nuclear weapons. It hasn't threatened anyone with them. Israel on the other hand has been using nuclear blackmail for 40 years. Who is the danger to the world? Iran with no nuclear weapons, who has signed the nuclear treaty and is under full inspection. Or Israel who is lead by reckless lunatics that even their own colleagues denounce as out of control and dangerous. Now Israel has between 200 and 600 atomic weapons, and has no inspection. It also has the Samson Option which could destroy all of the Middle East and much of Europe.

Israel is a limited democracy with many flaws. It does have a very free press where issues are widely debated. It also seems to have some military and intelligence people who aren't afraid to speak up. That is why I have hope that sane Jews will take the place over and eventually learn how to make peace with their neighbors.

Iran is similar to Israel in that it is a very flawed democracy. There is debate in the country and elections, where power changes hands in a limited way, just like Israel. Of course I could say thing about this country with it's basic one party system where real debate is stifled. I would say in that respect that Israel has a more free discussion.

Ross Kaminsky | 5.2.12 @ 9:20AM

Jack, this is simply ridiculous. Of course Iran is trying to build a nuclear weapon. There is no other reason for the uranium enrichment they are pursuing.

Israel has not "blackmailed" anyone. They do not even admit having nukes, though they obviously do. They have never attacked or threatened to attack a neighboring country, and have only fought in defense when they were attacked.

What part of Israel's history or current actions make you think they want to "destroy all of the Middle East and much of Europe"?

Jack, you are delusional.

Furthermore, your claim that Iran and Israel are politically similar is perhaps the stupidest thing you've said on these pages (in terms of a supposed representation of fact). Power does not change hands in Iran, and it changes dramatically in Israel, more than in most other places.

In short, Jack, everything you have said today reinforced my view that you are anti-Israel and probably anti-Semitic, and that your hatred causes you to embrace true evil. And that makes you evil right along with them.

W| 5.2.12 @ 10:43AM

There is no question Jack is anti- Israel and anti-Semitic. He is also anti-American because he ignores, or condones, the Iran takeover of our embassy in 1979, the hostages, the 240 Marines killed in Lebanon by Iran supported terrorrists, and Iran support of Hebollah and Hamas.

Jack is not delusional. He just hates Israel and the USA, and loves Iran because Iran has promised to destroy Israel.

Ross Kaminsky | 5.2.12 @ 10:48AM

By the way, Tim, as usual my comment is no more written only for Jack to read than yours is only for me to read. To the extent that others read it, it's not as useless as just talking to Jack.

In my opinion with all due respect Ross. You don't know what the hell you are taking about. All our security services and the our Joint Chiefs of Staff have said that Iran is not building nuclear nuclear weapons at this time. They are fed up with chickenhawk, neocons like you trying to get to get them into what could be another world war. The same is true with the security services, and military in Israel who are fed up with the lunatic politicians who run the place. The present head of the Mossad and current head of the military in Israel, General Gantz have both said Iran is rational and not building nuclear weapons, at this time. Several recent heads of the military and security services including General Ashkanazi. Yuval Diskin former head Shin Bet, who has said the same thing in very strong languge. The former heads of of the Mossad, Meir Diskin, and Effriam Halevey have said Iran is not building nuclear weapons at this time. They call the present government out of control and dangerous.

Now I will give my opinion of your disgusting use of the anti semite canard. When you guys are losing an argument you always start with the lies and name calling. I gave you facts answer them. The country is sick of wars and warmongers like you. Especially liars who don't know what the hell they are talking about.

" Ex-Israeli officials criticize Netanyahu’s bellicose stance on Iran

TEHRAN - The former head of Israel’s Shin Bet security agency has criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak for adopting a bellicose stance on Iran, according to the Haaretz daily.

Yuval Diskin, who was speaking at a public meeting in Beit-ul-Moqaddas (Jerusalem) on Friday, said Israel’s political leaders are exaggerating the effectiveness of a possible military attack on Iran, AP reported.

“I don’t have faith in the current leadership of Israel…,” he stated.

“I do not believe in a leadership that makes decisions based on Messianic feelings,” Diskin added.

Former Mossad chief Meir Dagan backed Diskin on Sunday, saying that he disagrees with Netanyahu’s policy on solving Iran’s issue, according to Haaretz.

He also called a strike against Iran’s nuclear program “stupid”, AP reported.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said at a conference hosted by the Jerusalem Post in New York on Sunday that he is against an attack on Iran, criticizing Netanyahu’s policy on Iran, Bloomberg reported.

In addition, Israel’s military chief Lieutenant General Benny Gantz, in an interview with Haaretz published on April 25, said that he does not believe Iran will decide to develop nuclear weapons, describing the country’s leadership as “very rational”.

“I think the Iranian leadership is comprised of very rational people,” Gantz stated."

The Orwellians think enough time has past to fool people about the wonders of Dan Rather. This book, I predict, will not even make the $ 1.00 summer discount book bin.
I guess in a way he does deserve to be honored by the whores in the MSM, he did invent a new school of journalism, which fits theres frauds to a T.

Bernie Goldberg, on O'Reilly, said Rather spent over 5 million in legal fees/costs in his losing suit against CBS for breach of contract. Don't have all details but the basis of the suit required Danny to prove his National Guard story about Bush. He lost but MSM still believes his story .

Ironically, both Barack Obama and Osama Bin Laden had something in common. They had a mutual desire to destroy the U.S. Constitution.

" Michael Scheuer, the former chief of the Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA's) Osama bin Laden unit, told the U.K. Daily Telegraph in a recent interview he was prevented from capturing or killing the terrorist by his superiors on at least 10 separate occasions.
In 1995, Scheuer was selected to lead the spy agency’s bin Laden efforts. By then the militant Islamist was exiled in Sudan after angering Saudi authorities. Bin Laden was running several businesses in the African nation that Scheuer suggested disrupting. “We formulated operations and submitted them for approval but they would not approve any of them,” the ex-CIA official told the Daily Telegraph. “If we had been able to deal a serious economic blow it could have been a show-stopper.”
Scheuer told the Telegraph that following the missed opportunities to kill or capture bin Laden in 1998, there were at least eight other chances to get the terror mastermind. By that point, bin Laden was supposedly among the U.S. government’s most wanted criminals. But for some unknown reason, senior officials refused to authorize his capture or assassination.

“One 50-cent round could have put us all out of our agony,” Scheuer explained. But that didn’t happen, as high-level authorities consistently ordered the CIA unit not to stop bin Laden."

“…a sense of one’s position is one of the unnoticed but fundamentally important conditions of life, like being unaware of the earth’s revolution or of the personal share we contribute to our own perceptions. Having been taught that he must not carry it in his heart, man carries the greatest part of his vanity under his feet, in that he walks about on the soil of a great motherland or fatherland, or on the ground of his religion or income-tax grade, and in default of such a position he even makes do with what anyone can have, which is poising on the momentarily highest point on the pillar of time that has arisen out of nothingness, in other words, living precisely now, when all one’s predecessors have turned to dust and one’s successors are not yet here. Yet if this vanity, which is usually unconscious, should from any causes suddenly mount from the feet into the head, a mild form of madness may result, similar to that of those virgins who believe they are about to give birth to the round Earth itself.”

“It's unfortunate that President Obama thinks that the EPA's relationship to jobs should be the same as the Navy SEALs' relationship to Osama bin Laden."

Actually, if one were to take the 2010 remarks from the former EPA regional director literally, the agency’s relationship to oil companies is much more threatening and combative.

The Roman tactics he stated that he wished to emulate were to find the first five men from a village and crucify them, not the first five who resisted, or questioned, or were found to be doing wrong, but the first five encountered. Navy Seals didn’t kill Bin Laden because he was there, but only after Bin Laden declared war on the US and all of its people and interests, and the organization that he led carried out multiple attacks on the United States, a congressional authorization of a use of force resolution was made, and a whole bunch of bureaucrats, lawyers and politicians gave their imprimatur on the general idea and the specific mission with its rules of engagement.

If we required the level of scrutiny on an EPA use of force that we did on Seal Team 6 and the Bin Laden mission, we would find its regulatory power much more benign than it currently is.

Romney's was right back in 2007: Spiking the football doesn't mean "Game Over." In a lot of ways it means the game is just starting, which is why our coach discouraged the practice. No sense filling your enemy with a terrible resolve. Leftians such as Obama and Clinton focus on singular abstractions (aka "buzzwords," "sound bites," etc.) versus the totality of any particular issue. Bush recognized the Islamofascist War was going to be a long one and never said it would be anything but. I remember his response to an interviewer's question about whether OBL was dead or alive;

"I don't know if he's dead or alive, but I do know he isn't leading any parades anywhere!"

In other words, OBL was neutralized and not much more than a symbol. His miserable existence (by our standards anyway) as a nasty little guy living on a grass mat in Abbotabad watching porn was proof of that. However, his organization continues on. Game NOT over, as Romney predicted 5 years ago. I think Obama is spiking the football now because he thinks we're stupid enough to accept the appearance as reality. Americans are smarter than that and take offense to being patronized. This will backfire on The One as it should.

Purp| 5.2.12 @ 2:30PM

Purp| 5.2.12 @ 1:51PM

Really. Obama had the moxie and the cajones to order the raid on Bin Laden, and deserves all the credit we can give him.
Bush/Cheney literally put the World Trade Center in flames on their campaign literature - for years they touted their response to 9/11, as if no one else could have responded better. If you don't like Obama touting his success over Bin Laden, the right shouldn't have shown America how it's done.
The fact that Obama did in 3 years what Bush-Cheney couldn't do in 8 is something to crow about and be proud of as Commander-in-Chief.
All your whining about tactics that the right has used for years that is now used by the Democrats is so much sour grapes.
Richie Romney said he would not spend the money to go after Bin Laden. Even John McCain, who said he would kill Bin Laden, had a "secret plan" to get him.
We got him, America should be proud, and the guy that made the decision to go should be given his due. It is something to campaign on - he has made us all safer than Bush-Cheney did, now hasn't he?

Hmmmmmmmm?????

And tell us EXACTLY what Obama did to make this happen???

Obama is a pimple on the ass of history. The entire intelligence operation he utilizes was put in place by Bush/Cheney/Powell/Rumsfeld. He did NOTHING to help the military or the intelligence services find Bin Ladin...NOTHING.

In fact, he tried to stop them. The CIA knew where Bin Ladin was for months; the only reason "Mr. Cajones" agreed to kill his Muslim Bro in the first place was because he knew he couldn't wait any longer, politically.

And PLEASE explain how Obama, who is downsizing the military's ability to fight a war on two fronts, who is slashing the military budget, and who wants to reduce our nuclear arsenal by almost 90% is "making us safer"???

You're a friggin' moron.

Any additional risks are to be brought back to the President for his consideration. The direction is to go in and get bin Laden and if he is not there, to get out."

This Obama is a real profile in courage. Rememer Ike who had a prepared statement for D-Day stating that if it failed he took the blame, but if it suceeded then it was due to the bravery of the military.

Bill| 5.2.12 @ 3:20PM

Explain exactly what Obama did. They had to drag him from the golf course, put a jacket on him to cover the golf shirt, and McRaven made the decision.
Of course if your other hero, Bubba, had not turned down three or four offers to arrest Obama there would have been no Sept 11.
We got Osama because of the info from waterboarding the terrorrists and good work by the CIA and the Seals. Obama just happened to be there.
So far you have said only that Bush could not find a 6'5" Arab. Was Obama in the Middle East looking for tall Arabs? Of course not, Obama would never profile.

Generally a good article, but I think the "attack points" at the end are a little lame. Get right down to it: Obama celebrates killing bin Laden on the one hand while keeping the people who sheltered Al Qaeda and bin Laden in power on the other; Romney was right (did I really say that?)

Also, how about a shout-out to Admiral McRaven? After all, according to Panetta he was the one who really made things happen.

And while you're at it, Obama, how about rappelling down a rope in night gear with one hand while firing an assault rifle with the other?

One of the things about someone who is always anxious to tell you how great he is, is that you always want to knock him down a peg or two. Just look at Wilt Chamberlain ... and Obama ain't no Wilt the Stilt.

Tom Paton| 5.3.12 @ 6:59PM

As I recall former President Clinton had three missed opportunities to take bin Laden out. Also , wasn't there a discussion about "Who do you want to answe the red phone at 3 AM?. And didnt he want those very seals to answer to a criminal court?
