Labor unions, like the United Nations, are all too often judged
by what they are envisioned as being — not by what they actually
are or what they actually do.
Many people, who do not look beyond the vision or the rhetoric
to the reality, still think of labor unions as protectors of
working people from their employers. And union bosses still employ
that kind of rhetoric. However, someone once said, “When I speak I
put on a mask, but when I act I must take it off.”
That mask has been coming off, more and more, especially during
the Obama administration, and what is revealed underneath is very
ugly, very cynical and very dangerous.
First there was the grossly misnamed “Employee Free Choice Act”
that the administration tried to push through Congress. What it
would have destroyed was precisely what it claimed to be promoting
— a free choice by workers as to whether or not they wanted to
join a labor union.
Ever since the National Labor Relations Act of 1935, workers
have been able to express their free choice of joining or not
joining a labor union in a federally conducted election with a
secret ballot.
As workers in the private sector have, over the years,
increasingly voted to reject joining labor unions, union bosses
have sought to replace secret ballots with signed documents —
signed in the presence of union organizers and under the pressures,
harassments or implicit threats of those organizers.
Now that the Obama administration has appointed a majority of
the members of the National Labor Relations Board, the NLRB
leadership has imposed new requirements that employers supply union
organizers with the names and home addresses of every employee. Nor
do employees have a right to decline to have this personal
information given out to union organizers, under NLRB rules.
In other words, union organizers will now have the legal right
to pressure, harass or intimidate workers on the job or in their
own homes, in order to get them to sign up with the union. Among
the consequences of not signing up is union reprisal on the job if
the union wins the election. But physical threats and actions are
by no means off the table, as many people who get in the way of
unions have learned.
Workers who do not want to join a union will now have to decide
how much harassment of themselves and their family they are going
to have to put up with, if they don’t knuckle under.
In the past, unions had to make the case to workers that it was
in their best interests to join. Meanwhile, employers would make
their case to the same workers that it was in their best interest
to vote against joining.
When the unions began losing those elections, they decided to
change the rules. And after Barack Obama was elected President of
the United States, with large financial support from labor unions,
the rules were in fact changed by Obama’s NLRB.
As if to make the outcome of workers’ “choices” more of a
foregone conclusion, the time period between the announcement of an
election and the election itself has been shortened by the
NLRB.
In other words, the union can spend months, or whatever amount
of time it takes, for them to prepare and implement an organizing
campaign beforehand — and then suddenly announce a deadline date
for the decision on having or not having a union. The union
organizers can launch their full-court press before the employers
have time to organize a comparable counter-argument or the workers
have time to weigh their decision, while being pressured.
The last thing this process is concerned about is a free choice
for workers. The first thing it is concerned about is getting a
captive group of union members, whose compulsory dues provide a
large sum of money to be spent at the discretion of union bosses,
to provide those bosses with both personal perks and political
power to wield, on the basis of their ability to pick and choose
where to make campaign contributions from the union members’
dues.
Union elections do not recur like other elections. They are like
some Third World elections: “One man, one vote — one time.” And
getting a recognized union unrecognized is an uphill struggle.

Another great article by Dr. Sowell. I would submit, however, that union elections are more similar to elections in Islamic countries: one man, one vote, one time.

" I rise to introduce the Truth in Employment Act which protects small businesses and independent-minded workers from the destructive and coercive "top-down'' organizing tactic known as salting. Salting is a technique designed by unscrupulous union officials for the purpose of harassing small businesses until the businesses compel their employees to pay union dues as a condition of employment. Here's what you don't seem to understand: In a conservative-run economy that allows businesses and the economy to grow, there is a free market at work. That goes both ways. There is a market for potential employees, and there is a market for jobs. Those employers who pay well and treat the employees well will be rewarded with hard working, highly skilled workers. I got that quote from John Paul II. Happy May Day, comrades.
Nick| 5.1.12 @ 2:12PM
DRed,
Maybe you should try reading the whole encyclical. You missed this gem with your selective quotation:
"In accordance with the principle of 'the dictatorship of the proletariat,; the groups that as political parties follow the guidance of Marxist ideology [e.g., the democrat party] aim by the use of various kinds of influence, including revolutionary pressure, to win a monopoly of power in each society in order to introduce the collectivist system into it by eliminating private ownership of the means of production. According to the principal ideologists and leaders of this broad international movement, the purpose of this program of action is to achieve the social revolution and to introduce socialism and finally the communist system throughout the world." (All emphasis in bold are mine.)
- Pope John Paul II, LABOREM EXERCENS (On Human Work), 14 September, A.D. 1981
Also, you are using the quote out of context. Mr. Sowell's article wasn't about the purpose of unions. He deals with the myth versus reality in the first paragraph. His point is that union practices, today, in the United States, are antithetical to liberty and freedom of association.
You really should read this encyclical, you might learn something. Such as socialism is not compatible with the teachings of the Catholic Church and the Gospel of Christ.
Nick| 5.1.12 @ 2:22PM
Oops! I forgot to add that you should have also include the Holy Father's words that immediately followed the quotation you posted:
"However, this struggle should be seen as a normal endeavor 'for; the just good: In the present case, for the good which corresponds to the needs and merits of working people associated by profession; but it is not a struggle 'against' others. (Emphasis in the original.)
How does that statement jibe with the message of your stinky, hippie protester friends, DRed? Aren't the "99%" against the "1%" in your commie world?
Slacker| 5.1.12 @ 3:32PM
Maybe DRed has a point. Catholicism does have a deep-rooted bond with leftism.
Catholic social teaching is incompatible with the libertarian side of the conservatism. Rick Santorum is great example. He loves unions.
Nick| 5.1.12 @ 5:53PM
Slacker,
You don't have a great deal of understanding of what the Catholic Church teaches, I'm afraid. There is no bond with "leftism," at all.
Unfortunately, what passes for libertarian these days is, in actuality, libertinism, for the most part.
And, Mr. Santorum was from Pennsylvania, a state heavily infested with unions. Like my own state of Michigan. Support of unions was the price required to win statewide office.
Slacker| 5.1.12 @ 7:24PM
Catholic social teaching does call for social justice and the church has embraced positive rights. In congress, catholic democrats outnumber catholic republican nearly 2:1. That’s a bond.
I think Santorum was sincere. His support of unions and rejection of libertarianism hurt him.
Nick| 5.1.12 @ 7:54PM
Democrats can't be Catholic, really. They just call themselves Catholic. They are Catholics In Name Only, i.e., CINOs.
Catholic social justice, in it's true sense, has nothing to do with what lefties mean by the term, today.
DRed| 5.1.12 @ 3:37PM
Of course I'm using the quote out of context. That's the point. I'm having a laugh. I'm mean, look at this freaking commie: "The disproportionate distribution of wealth and poverty and the existence of some countries and continents that are developed and of others that are not call for a levelling out and for a search for ways to ensure just development for all. " Someone should have clubbed that stinky hippie in the head and brought him into the real world.
DRed| 5.1.12 @ 3:43PM
As to slacker, I'd say it's more that the Catholic Church and the modern American left share similar concerns about the inequalities caused by global capitalism.
Nick| 5.1.12 @ 5:42PM
Okay, DRed, you got to section 2 of a document with 27 sections and 91 endnotes. Not very impressive. Again, try reading the entire encyclical, as a whole. Don't read it trying to find snippets you can use out of context (as you readily admit you do) to try to support socialism.
Because it doesn't.
If you had read the whole thing you would know that, because you would have read this:
"However, the role of unions is not to 'play politics' in the sense that the expression is commonly understood today. Unions do not have the character of political parties struggling for power; they should not be subjected to the decision of political parties or have too close links with them." (Emphasis mine.)
This is why most unions in this country violate Catholic teaching.
"No one can be at the same time a sincere Catholic and a true socialist"
- Pope Pius XI, Quadragesimo Anno (A.D. 1931)
DRed| 5.1.12 @ 6:02PM
Oh, stop Nick. Now you're just embarrassing yourself. Did the pope not say exactly what I quoted? I see a guy surrounded by a bunch of dudes wearing red talking about leveling, income redistribution and social justice and I don't need to read some fancy 27 section document with a bunch of footnotes to know what he's about. He's a commie, plain and simple.
Nick| 5.1.12 @ 6:27PM
That's because, like most lefties, you see things that just aren't there, or, only what you choose to see.
Because you live in FantasyLand.
You can't deal with reality (or what I wrote,) so, you make things up.
By the way, did you see how some of your smelly, hippie, OWS protester comrades tried to blow-up a bridge in Ohio!?!?

What is not discussed very much
is the fact that there are vast differences between public and private sector unions.
Public employee unions being the City, State and Federal workers and the private unions of course making up employees from various companies.
As with all issues there are two sides to this story.
Putting philosophy aside, the Private Sector Union Leadership wants private businesses to grow because when they grow they can obtain more members if said company is unionized.
Often times their is a huge rift between public and private sector Union Leaders and many Private sector Union leaders are no different than most Rinos who are very business minded.
Are there really any major differences between vulture capitalists and private sector union leaders?
Both groups live lavish personal lifestyles and try to give at least a few crumbs to the working class.
The differences are mostly manufactured by political junkies to keep us all occupied and entertained.

Dick Nome | 5.1.12 @ 12:20PM

The Ironworkers unions, like other craft unions such as Plumbers, Steamfitters, and Carpenters, operate an apprentice program to teach the skills of the craft. The union hopes that upon graduation they will become union members and sign up for work through the union hiring hall, and pay union dues.
Many employers use the union hiring hall when they need experience workers for temporary jobs.
The problem for unions is that they train these
workers who sometimes go work for non union contractors.
The reason for so many wanting to join the apprenticeship program is to obtain the training, and sign up for the hiring hall.
Ironworkers especially is a skilled, dangerous job because they work on such heights, with the danger of falling.

Labor unions were formed when there was a gross disparity in power between the employer and the unskilled or semi-skilled worker. The unions bargained for contracts that provided living wages, seniority rights, and safe working conditions. Over the past several decades, these same unions have used their numbers, and resultant political influence, to achieve legislation mandating living wages (minimum wage), safe working conditions (OSHA), and seniority rights, among other things. As a result, the percentage of workers in the private sector belonging to labor unions has fallen dramitically. They have been so successful that they have worked themselves out of existence. They have, almost singlehandedly, created the middle class that is unique to the United States, and some industrialized countries, such as Germany. On the other hand, public sector unions, have no such similar function. Even with the passage of the NLRA, everyone involved was well aware that it would not work in the public sector, as the whole dynamic was different.
Private labor unions are self-regulating. If they over step the bounds of their industry, the commit suicide. No such bounds exist for the public sector unions, as they believe that the taxpayer is an ever laying golden goose. Unfortunatley, their overstepping of their bounds will not just result in their suicide, but that of the country as we know it.
Tim| 5.1.12 @ 4:42PM
I think we need to be very clear about calling out Union Leaders for mis guided behavior and do so while not lumping most private sector union workers in the same group.
Romney will need some support from Steelworkers etc in Ohio and Pens if he hopes to win those two States.
It will be next to impossible for Romney to win the White House if he looses Ohio and still difficult if he looses Steel Town(Santorum's back yard).
So if the goal is to beat Obama, I would suggest we leave the hard working union workers alone and just focus on the corrupt leadership
like any other rougue folks who steal from the working class for their own personal gain.

I perceive capitalism as a negative developing balance between re-distributive crony capitalism versus innovative entrepreneurship (venture capitalists) where innovation is the only source of wealth.
The Trade Unions are infiltrated by the Marxist theories interpreting communists on behalf of the crony capitalists against the innovative entrepreneurs and venture capitalists.
Nevertheless the Trade Unions should be about Freedom of Speech in relation to primary and secondary labor relations measured in an objective scientific method but the Trade Unions have become politicized for the re-distributive inflationary stagnant economic politics of the crony capitalists and their representation in the US administration and become an underground political party themselves.
2. Today the US crony capitalist 'community' is locked with 3 intertwining policies. A. the US military doctrine to (be able to) fight two wars for a long period of time B. the agreement to pay oil worldwide in US dollars. C. resulting in a dependency of the US military, arms, energy, automobile complex and their respective Trade Unions ... on Islam oil.
3. The Islamic world must be put behind an Iron Curtain.

However, the unions today don't have Ford Service and company goons harassing and beating the workforce though from listening to the unions today you'd think Harry Bennett and his ilk still exist.
Nick| 5.1.12 @ 7:35PM
Mr. Baker,
I agree with most of what you wrote. My late grandpa had a similar history and opinion. If he heard me talk about unions, he would probably crack me one in the head.
Before he moved to Detroit, in 1937, he worked in the coal mines to the east of Pittsburgh, from the time he was 13. I've heard the stories of living in a company house, with 7 brothers and sisters, and being in debt to the company store. (But, the funny thing is that they were in debt because my great-grandma was a spend-aholic. They had a refrigerator that took coins to operate, and she would steal the money out of the coin-box. She stole my grandpa's money, when he was a teenager, because she found out where he hid it!)
My grandpa fought with his father over the union. Great-grandpa was from Croatia and was happy to have a job and a place to live, compared to the old-country. My grandpa may have even shot somebody, according to my dad, in one of the numerous battles that were fought in the 1920's and 30's.
But, the more I've learned about the history of unions in this country, going back into the 19th century, the more I've learned about the riots, assassinations, and bombings committed by union leaders. Maybe the company owners had good reasons to fight back against union organizers, given their past track record?
Remember that all those people came to Detroit in the first place because Ford paid so well. Just a thought.
