The Obama Watch

Obama’s Snipe Hunt

Our president goes on a wild goose chase against “speculators.”

Watching President Obama stumble through his energy crisis, it seems only a question of whether he will end up channeling Jimmy Carter or President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner of Argentina.

The latter, in case you missed it, just announced that her government will be seizing a 51 percent interest in YPF, the Argentine subsidiary of Repsol, the Spanish conglomerate that is the 15th largest refiner in the world. In most places, that would be called theft, but in the banana republic of Argentina it’s just business as usual. In making her announcement, Fernandez de Kirchner stood directly beneath a wall-length portrait of Eva Peron haranguing the masses sometime back in the 1940s. It was an irony that nobody seemed to notice. Who knows, maybe there’s a Broadway musical in Cristina’s future.

What prompted the move by the President, who succeeded her husband in 2007, was that YPF, originally founded by the Argentine government in the 1920s and privatized in 1993, wasn’t producing enough oil. Why wasn’t it producing enough oil? Because the government has imposed price controls. And like price controls everywhere, they have discouraged production while encouraging overconsumption. As a result, Argentina has ended up importing expensive foreign oil despite large discoveries of shale oil in recent years.

This blast from the past can only remind us that one government intervention in the economy always leads to a bigger one and that, despite this sordid history, old leftist ideas never die. There will always be some demagogue telling us that the government can do a better job at running things than the people who know their business. Kirchner probably doesn’t know enough about oil to tell you the difference between a hydrocarbon and a carbohydrate but as a lawyer, she is sure that once she and her friends are running YSF, oil will gush forth like Moses striking the rock.

So that brings us back to our own Man of the People, President Obama, who is really only in the kindergarten of such retrograde policies but giving it a try. On Tuesday he stood in the Rose Garden flanked by his two apostles of freedom and justice, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Attorney General Eric Holder, and announced the solution to our energy problems will be hunting down and prosecuting evil “oil speculators” who are responsible for driving up the price of gas in the U.S. Who are these individuals? We don’t have any names but we can already be sure they are “millionaires and billionaires” and don’t pay any taxes. Why, aren’t these the same people who are messing up the entire economy?! Well, what we do know is that Mitt Romney is their friend.

Before we go any further with this, perhaps we should ask, just what are “oil speculators” and why is it so important that they be hunted down? Here is the answer. Oil speculators are investors who think the price of oil is going to go even higher in the future. For whatever reason, they expect supplies to get tighter. Therefore they are willing to buy oil at a premium today in the anticipation that prices are going to go even higher tomorrow. It’s a gamble. You don’t automatically make money. Sometimes you lose a whole lot.

What speculators do, however, if they guess right, is smooth out the availability of supplies between the present and the future. By paying a higher price now, they assure that prices will be lower in the future. In effect, they hold supplies off the market today so that they will be available next week or next year when things become even more scarce. Adam Smith described this as preventing a “dearth” from becoming a “famine”:

When the government, in order to remedy the inconveniences of a dearth, orders all the dealers to sell their corn at what it supposes a reasonable price, it either hinders them from bringing it to market, which may sometimes produce a famine even in the beginning of the season; or if they bring it thither, it enables the people, and thereby encourages them to consume it so fast as must necessarily produce a famine before the end of the season.… No trade deserves more the full protection of the law, and no trade requires it so much, because no trade is so much exposed to popular odium.

Unfortunately, there are always politicians around, like President Obama, who are willing to encourage that odium for political purposes.

The biggest oil speculator of all is the federal government. At present the government has bought 727 million barrels of oil and stockpiled them in caves in Louisiana so that they may become available in case we face a dearth of oil tomorrow. This is, of course, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which holds enough oil to replace all our imports for 80 days. These purchases made over the years have subtly driven up the price of today’s oil, yet we are still very glad to have it because it could play a crucial rule in our future. The SPR has been drawn on four times: in 1991 during Operation Desert Storm (21 million barrels), in 1996-1997 in order to pay off part of the federal debt (28 mb), in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina when production in the Gulf of Mexico was disrupted (11 mb), and during 2011 because of tensions in the Middle East (30 mb).

The current run-up in price could qualify as another such emergency. The reason private investors are driving up futures prices is that they are anticipating a shooting war in the Persian Gulf. As Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta testified this week, we have been “within an inch of war almost every day.” Quite frankly, the Obama administration could well justify making some small releases from the SPR, since these tensions are having an impact on prices. But at this point it would probably be wiser to hang on to those supplies in case something more serious happens. If the President would explain all this to the public, people might be a little more tolerant about bearing the hardship. Unfortunately, his own anti-energy policies and past quotes about raising gasoline prices have overshadowed all this. So instead, he has to make a big show of tracking down “speculators.”

Right now I would say it’s time to start an office pool on how long it will be before the President or some congressional Democrat starts talking about price controls. Then we follow right in Jimmy Carter’s footsteps and have a repeat of the “oil shortages” of the 1970s. That’s the problem with government intervention in the marketplace. One you intervene, things only get worse, which creates a new clamor for even more intervention. Just ask Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner about that one.

•••••••

Three weeks ago, I wrote a column saying you could count me out on defending George Zimmerman in the Trevor Martin case. At that point the country seemed on the brink of racial warfare. Al Sharpton was on television every night, African-American youths were rioting in southern cities, the New Black Panthers had put a price on Zimmerman’s head. Then a week later there were racial killings in Tulsa and it appeared the country might be pushed over the edge.

Now suddenly everything is quiet. You hardly see a story on the news. What happened? Well, there was an arrest. The Florida prosecutor finally got around to deciding that the circumstances demanded a second-degree murder charge. In Tulsa, the alleged killers were arrested very quickly and will probably be facing the death penalty. Mind you, none of this says that any of these people are guilty. It just means that somebody in authority is acting and that everyone will have their day in court.

It’s a good lesson in the purpose of the justice system. It is there to keep the peace. If police and prosecutors and judges don’t deal with a situation like the Zimmerman-Trayvon Martin shooting, then someone else will. Instead of being tried in a court of law, it will be tried on television every night or in the streets. Judges and prosecutors and law school professors have somehow gotten lost in the conviction that their only responsibility is to make sure that no one is ever wrongly accused or convicted of anything. They talk endlessly about how the justice system pits “the lone individual against the awesome powers of the state.” But if the state has awesome powers, it also has awesome responsibilities. It has to keep the peace in a nation of 300 million individuals, many of whom dislike each other and are not hesitant to act things out. The calm that has descended upon both the Trayvon Martin and Tulsa, Oklahoma cases are a good example of just how important those responsibilities can be.

All of these efforts just go to show the shallowness of this President and his administration. There is no substance, only smoke and mirrors. What a pity – the American people were honestly expecting real hope and change and got bait and switch.

Jack in Wi.| 4.20.12 @ 8:23AM

If you want the prices of oil to drop like a stone and stick the speculators with a huge loss, make peace with Iran and tell Netanyahu to get the hell behind his borders and stay there.

Obama is a lot like Peron, and Mrs. Kirchner. That is he is a fascist on economics. The problems that Argentina has can be put back to Peron and his handling of the economy. Argentina used to be one of the richest countries in the world before it let thugs like Peron and his successors rule the country with bread and circuses.

Tucker is right about the Martin-Zimmerman case. Of course, I have been saying let the system work since the beginning. Zimmerman needs his day in court.

TLP| 4.20.12 @ 8:45AM

I would love to see all of the NAZI MEMORABILIA that you must have.

"We should make Peace with Iran."

"We should tell Netanyahu to get the Hell behind his Borders and stay there."

Aren't you forgetting something? Like: We should put South Africa type Sanctions on them if they keep SHOOTING BACK at the Innocent Palestinians. They should stop hanging around at the bottom of the friendly Muslim's Dome of the Rock, and to stop littering, down there, shoving trash in to the crevices of the wall. And stop all of that bobbing up and down when they pray. It's disorienting. Eat some Pork, and some Shellfish, for God sakes. Who do you think you are? They talk funny, they wear funny looking hats on their heads, and would it KILL THEM to get a Nose Job?!

I can't believe that you're making a whole lot of Friends, with all this "It's the JOOZ Fault" over and over, again.

Don't get me wrong. There are Bad Jews, out there. Timothy Geithner, springs to mind.

And, there are definitely lots of Stupid Jews. You can see them every Election, going in to the Voting Booth to pull the Lever for another Democrat.

But, please. you gotta got stop chasing Mobey Dick.

And, Alan?

You should stop chasing all of the other Dicks.

Jack in Wi.| 4.20.12 @ 9:31AM

Lets have WW3 just because you Zionists want to keep killing, stealing from, and torturing the people that you stole the place from. Half the population that you have under your control are Arabs who are treated worse then the South African blacks, under Apartheid. I would call for sanctions on Israel, but I don't agree with that, as they are acts of war and punish the poor, not the rich. It is better that Israel be called out for what it is, a filthy, racist, apartheid state. It's up to you Jews to change it and make it right. The Jews of South Africa and the USA were the most outspoken in calling for equal rights in those countries. It is time to practice what you preach. Integrate Israel now. Full civil , religious, and political rights for all in old Palistine.

Iran is a threat to no-one. It has given up any nuclear weapons program it had and is under constant inspection. We should do what Nixon did with China, open up full diplomatic, trade and cultural relations. The price of oil would drop and we could get the hell out ofthe region and let them settle their own problems. We should develop our own vast energy resources and let the people who need Middle East oil like India, China, Japan, and Europe worry about it.

TLP| 4.20.12 @ 9:55AM

The poor Arabs have nobody to blame, but THEMSELVES.

They've gotten Billions and Billions and Billions of Dollars, and what have they got to show for it?

How many Innocent people, of every Faith, all over the World, have been BUTCHERED by this Cult of Death?

They slit the throats of Infants, in the name of their God. They Slaughter Women and Children. They slice open the Pregnant Women's Stomachs. They hold 4 year old little Girls up, by their hair, before they put a BULLET IN HER HEAD, all the while Filming it, in the hopes that his fellow Religion of Peacers, will get a chance to Enjoy the Movie, while everyone eats Candy and Pastries.

These are the creatures that you side yourself with.

Blood thirsty ANIMALS, who BELIEVE that Butchering Women and Children, in cold blood, is pleasing to their GOD, and worthy of Celebrations, now, and in Death.

They strap Explosives to their own kids. They throw Acid in the faces of Little Girls, for the CRIME of going to school. They MURDER their Daughters in the name of Honour. And they would Gut you like a Deer, if they ever got the chance.

Let's all join hands and shed a tear, shall we? For the poor plight of a Group of People who stopped being HUMAN, a long time ago.

Have fun in Hell, Jack.

You will not be missed.

Jack in Wi.| 4.20.12 @ 11:21PM

You call me an Nazi yet you write that 300 million Arabs are not human and that they can be oppressed and killed at will. I just had lunch at my favorite Palistinian Resturant today. It is run by a fine family of parents and their 9 children. The food is excellent and it was packed for lunch. They have the best vegetarian, buffet, lunch in town. they have a huge business at night with belly dancers and hookas. The food is great and the people who run it are young, good looking, educated, and intelligent. They are expanding and the owner parks his 100,000 Mercades in front of the place. They treat me like an elder brother when I come in. No I have never talked politics with any of them. But I am supposed to let you get away with calling these fine people animals, you filthy Zio-nazi.

Tina B| 4.21.12 @ 6:41PM

Real Ballsy, Jack, they treat you like an older brother but you've never asked them how they personally feel about the Jews next door, and the murderers across the world killing innocents in the name of Allah? You've never had the nerve to ask, as you provide them with a good living in America, land of their great Satan? And you're as close as family? Not any of my family. We talk about those issues all the time. Guess you're Arab family doesn't trust you enough to ask you about these matters, either. Close relationship there. Haha. Jack you're such an ignoramus.

Having a great vegetarian buffet, belly dancers, hookahs, Mercedes Benz, and they defer to you when you come in to spend your money in their establishment. oh. what a shock. Must be really wonderful people, salt of the earth. rich. good looking. educated. In America, no doubt. And they've never told you how embarrassed they are at the murderous/suicidal clowns representing the best interests of their so-called religion? Maybe they're not embarrassed. Maybe they even support this Jihad. Ya think?

If they haven't shared their love of America with you, an American, albeit a stupid and/or naive one, I think they don't love America. But don't you worry, just keep supporting them and telling everyone how lovely all Arabs are because these people are rich, good looking and educated and they treat you like a long lost brother whenever you set foot in their restaurant. Are you really that dumb? Wait. I already know the answer.

Tom| 4.21.12 @ 8:45PM

I didn't know whether to flat out laugh my ass off at the "favorite palestinian restaurant" BS or just think how pathetic this pathelogical liar really is and what he needs to do to cast his spiel to some brainless idiot who is stupid enough to buy it.

Bob S| 4.20.12 @ 10:50AM

It's funny that you actually believe Iran is not a threat to anyone. Funny that you take their assurances at face value, and funny that you ignore that Iran has been financing terrorism for a long time.

Jack in Wi.| 4.20.12 @ 11:37PM

Iran is a threat to no-one because all our combined intelligence services have said that they are not developing nuclear weapons at this time. So has the Joint Chiefs of Staff, The Secretary of Defense, and several high ranking former intelligence heads of the Mossad and Shin Bet. What the hell would Iran do with a nuclear weapon anyhow? They would be blown off the face of the earth if they used it.

As for Iran pushing terrorism it may, I don't know, but nothing like the worst terrorist country in the world Israel. I suggest you read about of the terrorist crimes of Israel. To name just a few, The Lavon affair, Operation Susannah, the attack on the USS Liberty, many assassinations worldwide, the present terror attacks in Iran. The worst of all the Samson Option which is noting but nuclear balckmail and a threat to kill tens of millions of people if Israel doesn't get it's way.

Todd S| 4.20.12 @ 11:35AM

Hitler's Birthday today but I don't need to tell you do I Jack? If only we had not intervened with a European matter and let Hitler finish the job we wouldn't have the Israel problem today right Jack? We know the Muslims are a peaceful people, they just want all the Jews dead is all.

Jack in Wi.| 4.20.12 @ 11:51PM

You should be celebrating Hitler's birthday, not me. National Socalism and National Zionism are 2 evil twins interwined with each other. They both believed in Maser Races. Hitler and the Zionists worked together to force the German Jews to settle in Palistine. I suggest you read about the Transfer Agreement between Hitler and The Zionists. The Jewish author Edmond Black has written a book with that name on it. That is the Zionist approved version. My copy has a forward by Abe Foxman himself. It is bad enough. For a different Jewish version and more horrible one I suggest you study the webbsites of the Anti-Zionist Jews.

Now I am called a Nazi for calling for integration and peace in the Middle East and the world. I have long called for the univeral brotherhood and respect for all the people in world. I do it in the basic Christian sense, which is also what decent Muslims and Jews believe in. I don't believe in world government or the UN. Shalom.

Todd S| 4.21.12 @ 10:46AM

That probably makes good sense to you but you sound like a raving lunatic to anyone with good sense. Yep, Hitler and the "Zionists" were working together clearly . All a conspiracy to have 6 million Jews rounded up and slaughtered and then get sympathy to settle in Palistine and get the UN to recognize Israel. And your calling for peace and integration in the Middle East is completely one sided and without reason. What is it exactly Jack that Israel needs to give to the Muslim hordes for peace? We have been through this charade many times, the two State Solution is a hoax in an attempt to destroy Israel with world approval.

Jack in Wi.| 4.21.12 @ 12:24PM

Read about the Transfer Agreement. I didn't make it, the Zionists and Hitler did. The only Jewish group in Germany that Hitler would talk to were the Zionists, who were a small minority of German Jews at the time. They both had common goals. Hitler wanted the Jews out of Germany and the Zionists wanted them in Palistine. Any Jew who wanted to take any money out of Germany could only take it if he went to Palistine. Most Jews at that time, wanted to go elsewhere.

Hitler, later wanted to ship the
Jews in his empire to Madagascar or some other place. The final solution was only decided to at the Wansee Conference in early 1942 after the Americans entered the war. By then he figured it was a war to the death and if he may be going down he wanted the European Jews to go down with him.

Now as for the 2 state solution being impossible at his time I agree. The only solution that ever made sense is the one state solution with equal rights for all in old Palistine for Jew, Christian, Muslim, and everyone else. Palisitine had been a peaceful place for centuries until the National Zionists forced their way in and stole it. The Holyland belongs to the whole world, not just a small number of squabbling Jewish sects.

Todd S| 4.21.12 @ 1:20PM

Hitler didn't just want to ship them elsewhere you putz, he wanted them dead and eliminated. You ever heard of Mein Kempf? How dumb and blind can anyone be? Of course you might know it is a Big Lie but you will repeat it because that is your worldview as a demented Jew hater. You and far left Jewish assholes like Peter Beinart have a lot in common in your hatred of Israel and men like Netanyahu who defend themselves against uncivilized barbarians who call themselves Muslims.

Jack in Wi.| 4.21.12 @ 8:53PM

I want to corrrect something I wrote above. the Author of the Book theTransfer Agreement was Edwin Black not Edmond Black. It is an ADL approved book. I like personally the versions put out the the anti-Zionist Jews. both versions are very intresting and a must read for anyone intrested in the holocaust and WW2. Shalom: I have enough of all your BS for the weekend. My garden and family fun come first.

Todd S| 4.22.12 @ 1:24AM

Keep pimping the Big Lie you ignorant prick

Nick| 4.21.12 @ 4:16PM

Was Goebbels your uncle, Jack-boot?
You keep repeating this Big Lie of yours, hoping that people will actually buy your anti-Semitic clap-trap.

TrueBlue | 4.20.12 @ 1:24PM

Where are you getting your info from Jack? The Arabs in Israel have MORE RIGHTS than Arabs in the entire rest of the region.

Stan Redmond| 4.20.12 @ 3:31PM

Wow. Just wow!

Tina B| 4.21.12 @ 6:48PM

Yes, Stan. You read it here. Jack from Whateverrockhecrawledoutfromunder is for real and he really thinks that way. And Todd, Nick and TrueBlue, thank you also for being so startled by Jack's fancies. He thinks he knows. That is what a lot of America is like these days. Prideful and ignorant at the same time. Does not bode well for us in the upcoming election. Much prayer needed.

Bob S| 4.20.12 @ 10:47AM

Wrong on both counts. So Netanyahu has to get the hell behind his borders, but what about Ahmadinejad? What if he decides he wants to get behind Netanyahu's borders with missiles or aircraft, because Netanyahu didn't go out to protect his borders?

And he was wrong on the justice system, as are you for agreeing. The purpose of the justice system is not to keep the peace, it is to protect from abuses of power. What if Zimmerman's day in court is just to have his case dismissed because the prosecutor can't possibly get a guilty verdict from the evidence? We damn well know there won't be peace after that, so will Zimmerman require another day in court, just to keep the peace?

KennesawJack| 4.20.12 @ 11:49AM

Well, I agree with your penultimate and last paragraphs. First one is your typical anti-Semitic BS. However, on balance, agreeing with two out of three of your comments is an exceedingly rare occurence.

Occam's Tool| 4.20.12 @ 6:34PM

My counsel on the Martin case was to let the courts decide. Obama is a Marxist and a horse's ass. He can rarely do things correctly, and only after it would be obvious to a Nazi retard like Cheesehead Jack.

Our land for 3400 years, Jack. Up yours, scumbag.

Jack in Wi.| 4.20.12 @ 11:04PM

It was always the land of the Cannanites and Philistines who welcomed Abraham into their bossum and treated him very well. All his decendents are all intermarried with Cannanites, Philistines Iraqi's, Syrians Arabs, Phonecians and Egyptians. Why should a bacon eating slob like you from thousands of miles away have, any right to the land of people who have lived there for 3000 years? If you didn't like the neighbors why did you steal the neighborhood?

Nick| 4.21.12 @ 12:52AM

You know about as much about the Sacred Scriptures as you do about WWII or the U.S. Constitution, Jack-boot. Which means you know NOTHING.

Abraham conquered the Canaanite kingdoms, Einstein. There were no Iraqi's back then, dope. And, God told Moses, Joshua, the Judges, and Saul to conquer the Canaanites, Jebusites, Amorites, Hivites, etc. Because it was the land of their father, Abraham.

There is no such thing as Palestine anymore, you illiterate moron. Therefore, there are no Palestinians.
They are all ARABS.

Jack in Wi.| 4.21.12 @ 3:37AM

Nick you know nothing of the Sacred Scriptures. Read Genesis. Abraham was the father of many nations through his wife's maid Hagar, his barren wife Sarah who eventually concieved in her old age, and his other women Keturah ect. It says in my Bible that Abraham's decendents would be as numerous as the sand on the beach and the drops of water in the sea. That fits the Christians and Muslims who claim spiritual descent from old Abe. It also fits the whole Middle East which claims actual discent from him

Abraham was came from an area in Iraq. He lived in peace with the Cannanites, Philistines, and Egyptians who liked him and made him rich. His son Issac, after time back in Iraq where he married his cousin, came back to live among the Cannanites. His son Jacob-Israel had 12 sons and a daughter. All his sons, except Joseph and possibly Benjamin, married Cannanites and his daughter Dinah was raped by one who wanted to marry her. Her brothers Reuben and Dan murdered the people of Sicem where the rapist came from. The rapist had wanted to marry Dinah and make peace with her family. The Family told him he could marry Dinah only if he was circumcised and if all the men, of the town, would do the same. While they were recovering from this brutal and uncessary procedure and were still incapacited 2 of her full brothers Ruben and Dan murdered all the men stole their women and and leveled the town. For this their father Jacob on his deathbed disenherited them.

Judah the father of the tribe of the Jews was married to a Cannanite girl. Joseph was married to the daughter of an Egytian priest and was mummified in that religion. Jacob-Israel and his whole family after living for years in peace and prosperity with the Cannanites and Philistines, moved to Egypt and were welcomed by Pharoh himself who gave them good land and food in the middle of the 7 lean years.

Moses was an Egyptian marrid to an Arab. Samson liked Philistine girls. David, Solomon, and Jesus were decended from a Cannanite prostitute Rehab. David and Solomon had huge harems from all over the Middle East.

Ruth was a Moabite. The 10 Ten lost Tribes were never lost they just were absorbed into the surrounding Semitic tribes of the neighborhood. Herod the Great was of Arab descent. He built the Wailing Wall and rebuilt the great Temple. All those pious Jews banging their heads against the Wailing Wall are doing it against a structure built by an Arab, with the help of Roman and Greek engineers.

Now I have wasted enough time and type on a dimwit like you. Go read the Bible yourself and figure out if I am wrong, and also read a lot of history. You might figure it out in 50 years.

Thom in Wisconsin| 4.22.12 @ 1:38PM

Jack, I'm not calling you a Nazi. While no political group so resembles the Nazi beliefs as much as liberal democrats, we throw that epithet around far to freely. You are, without question, an anti-semite. While not Nazi in and of itself, you would throw the Jews to the wolves without loosing a nights sleep. You use all the popular, and rediculously wrong, "facts" in support of your bigotry. For example; When the land known as "the Promised Land" was setteled by the Isrealites, it was NOT fully claimed by ANY other society anywhere near the area. There was no jurisdiction of any form there. It was a desolate, inhospitable wasteland. Even so, after 40 years of trecking through sand, heat, and rocky terrain, I'm sure the "land of milk any honey" appeared to be just so. The Isrealites turned this unclaimed land into theirs through years of sweat equity, intense labor, inovative physical solutions, and determination to make it what it is today. It was taken from them thru a series of wars, occupations, and jealous presecutions. It was RETURNED to them in 1948 with the full cooperation and enthusiasm of Democrat President Harry S. Truman. It has been home to them ever since. The Palistinians have no rightous claim to ANY part of the land. They settled, as squaters, on the land, now productive due to the Jewish efforts, and lived off the efforts of the true owners. That they are still there at all is a testimony to the patience of Jewish leaders. Your own liberal press prints stories about the attacks of Palistinians and other arab countries on Isreal. The statements of Irans leaders have been clearly genocidal. Finally, you are wrong in that the security forces of this nation say there are no efforts to create a nuculear weapon in Iran. They have shown pictures, both camera drone and satalite, of operations the nature of which are conclusive evidence of that type of work occuring. Our own "president" has come out saying that he believes economic sanctions can deal with Irans nuculear efforts. You will probably always be an anti-semite. Bigotry and ignorance have a cachete that takes the pressure of logical thought or helplessness off the purveyor. Check with your Resturant owning family (whose own country would not have allowed the success they have enjoyed here) and let's see how honest they are with this.

Jack in Wi.| 4.22.12 @ 5:37PM

Considering that I have been a conservative Republican and very conservative Christian my whole life, what has being liberal have to do with me? Thom with all due respect you are about as dumb as a stump about history and the Bible. Zionism and Christian Zionism have nothing to do with real Christianity which is a universal faith for all mankind. There are no more Jews or gentiles we are all one with Jesus Christ. St Paul a fine Jewish rabbi, who studied with the great sage Gamaliel, and who wrote that, should know what he was talking about.

JT| 4.21.12 @ 10:32AM

"It was always the land of the Cannanites and Philistines "

Bullshit Nazi, the Philistines also known as the Peleset are believed to have migrated from the area of the Aegean and have language(indo-European) and culture more associated with the Greeks and Mycenae in particular. Most Archeaologists now beleive they were definately not a semitic people but were parts of the Migrations of the "Sea Peoples" a mix of sea faring groups who invaded the area in waves during parts of the Egyptian New Kingdom era(13th and 12th Century BC). The Philistines arrived in the south-west of Canaan in the 12th century B.C. The Egyptians fought battles with these groups including Ramses II and III and later incorporated them into their armies after defeating them. The Isrealites also fought battles with the Peleset .i.e the Philistines at Shephelah, Aphek, and Eben-Ezer and many other skirmishes. Samson was a notorious killer of Philistines. The Philistines were outside Invaders and the area in question was NEVER theirs nor did they always live or belong there. The Bible has a passage as to where the Philistines originated In Jeremiah 47:4 they are named 'the remnant from the coasts of Caphtor', and Amos compares the exodus of Israel from Egypt with that of the Philistines 'from Caphtor' Most Scholars now beleive Caphtor was Modern day Crete, others think possibly Cyprus. You really are an historical retard aren't you?

Jack in Wi.| 4.21.12 @ 12:30PM

We are all children and descendents of Adam and Eve. the Jews were chosen by gog to bring forthe the Messiah of the world. that mission was completed 2000 years ago. The mission of the Jews today is to follow the Commandments and to love your neighbors as yourselves. It is time to get back to God's program.

Jack in Wi.| 4.21.12 @ 12:34PM

Man You got me mad. I usually don't try to correct my numerous typing mistakes. But spelling God as gog has to be corrected. Bring forth the Messiah of the world also needs to stated more clearly. Shalom on your sabbath.

Nick| 4.21.12 @ 4:09PM

Don't stroke-out, now, Jack-boot!
You were probably thinking of Gog and Magog. Is that who you worship, Gog?

Now, you biblical illiterate, Isaac and Jacob went to Haran, which was in modern-day Syria, not Iraq. Dope.
God promised Abram that his descendants would take the lands of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites (Genesis 15). Which they did.
Moses was a Levite! Brainiac.

Easy on the Nazi Nick, you haven't read "The Real History of the world according to Dr. Herodotus(AKA Jack the Jew Hater). Anything that disputes the Nazi's warped view of history and revisionist history is obviously Zionist propaganda. Therefore you and I obviously must be Zionists.

Jack in Wi.| 4.22.12 @ 5:27PM

Taking time away from my garden I have to say that not one of you knows his Bible or his history. Nothing I have written has been answered. The Transfer Agreement between Hitler and the Zionists happened and in fact without Hitler Israel would not exist today. I have suggested you all read the aproved version by Edwin Black. But the best version, by far written on the webbsittes of the Anti Zionist Jews. The poor religious Jews suffered by far the most under Hitler. They were the easiest to catch and stayed in their homes and didn't flee when the Nazi's came. They didn't want to flee to the atheist state of Stalin.

I just read a Antizionist rabbi yesterday that almost agrees with me word for word on the Old Testament and the universal love of God for all people, including Muslims. I don't agree with the antizionist Jews on the Messiah and how it will all turn out, but they are very fine scholars of the Bible and the real history of the Holocaust.

Evil Speculators. I believe that the BEAST's great Benefactor, (and the odds on favourite to be the ANTI-CHRIST), the Jew who helped the NAZIS in their Extermination efforts of his fellow Jews - George Soros - is a Speculator. Apparently, it's okay with President Straw Man, if you run around the world Manipulating Currencies until they Collapse. (After all, isn't that what He's been doing, lo these past 3 1/2 years?)

It would seem that Speculating on the World Market is also all right, if you happen to be trying to HELP El Marxist Presidente', sten the Tide of the Inevitable Economic Tsunami that always follows in the wake of every KEYNESIAN Earthquake.

Who do we know who fits that description? Let's just call him......Oh, I don't know. Let's call him Ben Bernanke, and let's have him running around the halls of The Fed, Printing Money so that he can buy up our own Debt. He'll De-Value the Dollar, thus making everything more Expensive, but by Robbing Peter to pay Me loan you long time, in China, he makes Hamas' Deliveror's Millionaire and Billionaire buddies, on Wall Street, happy. so it's all right.

And of course President Pathological Liar, and his puke face looking, you can't help but want to beat the sh*t out of him because he's such a Smarmy looking little POS - Timothy (Taxes are for Little People) Geithner - run around all over the world telling stories, and making promises that they hope will Influence the Markets.

I know that The Muslim has ZERO to run on. Like Margaret Thatcher's explanation about Socialism, getting Votes for President Titanic II is no different. Pretty soon he's gonna run out of Blacks, and Gays, and Lesbians. He's gonna run out of Felons, Transgenders, and the Drug Addled. He's gonna run out of the Rank and File Union Guys that still fall for his line of SHIT, where Jobs are concerned.

All he has left is the Spectre of a Bogeyman. A Scapegoat. Someone he can use to distract the people who watch Jersey Shore, the Bachelor, American Idle, and the Taped Box Sets of Old Survivor shows.

If only he had something on Romney. Something good. Something that would swing public opinion back over to him.........He's already got the Dog on the roof bit, but because he was actually EATING DOGS, that kinda fizzled.

I guess it's the Speculators.

Better than nothing.

"Seasoned" fart,
I think this President knows exactly what he is doing. Or at least Soros and the Socialist Party, the handlers in the teleprompter, know exactly what they are doing. Remember, Soros took down the British Pound and handful of other currencies.

The problem they have is we know what they are doing. And so do the speculators. Perhaps the speculators calculate that if the Obama regime makes an aggressive move on our oil companies, prices worldwide will "necessarily skyrocket." So holding oil at $100 a barrel is a great hedge if confiscation by a statist regime causes the price to go to $200.

Al Adab| 4.20.12 @ 12:25PM

Jr:
They do indeed know exactly what they are doing. They simply use obfuscation, smoke and mirrors, misdirection, to keep the voters focus off what "fundamentally transform America" actually meant.

We are faced with a battle for the future of self-government and liberty worldwide (not to be confused with nation building) wherin the U S is the faltering last example of what that looks like. The descent of this nation into the administrative, social-welfare statist model will mark the end of human progress and usher in a new dark age of tyranny. The ancien regime reborn. They will create what they most fear. Some will have much and most will have little only by sufferance of their betters.

The speculator issue was investigated by the government in 2005, 2008 and 2011. No evidence has been found which indicate that speculation has anything to do with fuel prices.

When you point that out to liberals they claim the market is being manipulated.

Since Obama controls the Justice Department common sense would tell you that if he had any evidence of manipulation which is already illegal, these people would be prosecuted.

Unfortunately, although it's a crime to lie to the government, it's not a crime for a politician to lie to and deceive the public.

That's the only problem we have in America. And we have an abundance of liars. Talk about free market forces.

I also believe not matter how hard Romney may try to stick only to policies he will thanks to Obama's obnoxious behavior be forced to level with the American voter: If you want Greece --a Socialist State ) vote Obama if you want Freedom and greatness vote for me.

Indy| 4.20.12 @ 8:23AM

No mention of the Fed? Printing all that money, our weak dollar policy is driving up the price of everything including fuel.

Von Mises Jr| 4.20.12 @ 8:42AM

This is why the "Core" inflation rate, concocted in 1975, eliminates food and fuel. It means that inflation for the things we buy most can skyrocket and the government can deny its existence.

Doctor Detroit| 4.20.12 @ 12:33PM

Yet housing prices are included I think. Thats what keeps the numbers down.

Al Adab| 4.20.12 @ 1:25PM

Guys you have it right. The actual rate is likely 12 to 14 percent, but housing and the exclusion of fuel skews the numbers. It is strarting to show up on the sheleves as fuel costs raise the transportation cost and the retail prices.

Von Mises Jr| 4.20.12 @ 3:05PM

I heard 2% for the first three months of 2012. That translates into 8% but rising. Doctor Detroit is correct, they factor in housing prices and rent that are down due to a glut of housing.

Dr. X| 4.20.12 @ 8:49AM

Come on, Tucker. Get real about the Trayvon thing. You actually think that throwing Al Sharpton's pack of wolves a bone by arresting Zimmerman will solve the problem? Did you actually read the politically-charged indictment filed by that fat pig Angela Corey?

Exactly what do you think will happen if the justice system actually fulfills its "awesome responsibility" and Zimmerman is acquitted? I'll tell you. Massive race riots.

Zimmerman is the victim of a black lynch mob, pure and and simple. How can you be so gullible to think otherwise?

Bob S| 4.20.12 @ 10:55AM

Tucker thinks with his emotions on race issues, evidently. He may be as liberal as Zimmerman when it comes to race issues. Well, as liberal as Zimmerman was. Can't imagine he'll hold the same opinions after they crucified him in the national media.

Teaghan| 4.20.12 @ 12:55PM

Riots are what they racebaiters want. If they wanted real justice for blacks, they wouldn't cherry pick their causes/victims. They would actually have to work for a living, not ride around in a limo, stay at expensive hotels and be treated like some POS from Hollywood.

LiveFreeOrDie| 4.20.12 @ 1:28PM

Exactly. How this ties in to oil speculation is beyond me but Tucker is off his rocker.

"The Florida prosecutor finally got around to deciding that the circumstances demanded a second-degree murder charge."

This is a complete fabrication. The prosecutor decided NOT to file charges. A special prosecutor, appointed by a spineless politician to appease a mob who then bypassed a grand jury because it would likely not yield an indictment. Tucker you are a fool. By the way, Martin's first name is Trayvon, not Trevor you dolt.

Anthony| 4.20.12 @ 3:26PM

Quite right Dr. X, Tucker has only half his head up his butt today.
The arrest of Zimmerman based upon that deplorable arrest affidavit, is proof positive that the Zimmerman case is being handled precisely in ways NOT CONTEMPLATED BY THE JUSTICE SYSTEM.
The sating of the howling mob is not justice, certainly not in America. Cowards like Tucker confuse appeasement with justice, because doing the right thing is not always easy.

Von Mises Jr| 4.20.12 @ 8:58AM

Excellent article, Mr. Tucker. I have not read "Wealth of Nations," but Mises explains price controls causing the effects you outline. Food shortages in socialist takeovers are common since when they set a top price for grain to allegedly combat inflation, it always creates shortages.
This regime seems to be causing shortages, at least domestically, to cause the price of gas to "necessarily skyrocket." They declared war on oil speculators and the EPA plans to crack down on fracking. Reduced local supply causes price increases ($4/gal), regulating different blends by state and season increase price, and threats to producers panics the markets causing higher prices.
The DC politicians and EPA interfering with energy production is not due to environmental issues. It is about socialism. Fascism controls the means of production, and socialism can be identified by planned economy. Why people fall for the propaganda is perplexing. Socialism demands control of key markets.

Purp| 4.20.12 @ 12:59PM

So, now you're calling speculators on Wall Street "Socialists" ? When will you realize that domestic production of oil only affects world market supply, which sets the prices, nothing produced domestically is guaranteed to stay in the U.S.
Fracking - omg, let's hope they frack in your water supply and see what tune you play then.
Propaganda? Water that catches on fire out of the tap? That's propaganda? Iranian problem and world oil prices spike is propaganda?

Do you know what the OCS is and the oil production restrictions placed upon same by Democrat-administered governments for the last 50 + years? Do you understand that we have domestically an potential oil supply that is a hundred times greater than that of the Middle East and Russia????? Are you stupid?????

I have only to disagree with you on one point Von Mises. We do not have a local shortage of gasoline. We are exporting gasoline for the first time in years. That means someone somewhere else is willing to pay more for it. Commodities that are tied to the world market have a tough time being manipulated, regardless of what is happening locally. If I were you I would consider that the value of the dollar having a much greater impact on what we end up paying for petrolum products. Many spectulators seem to use commodities as a hedge against a falling dollar.

And, it's Trayvon, not Trevor. Perhaps you were thinking of the two British lads who were callously slaughtered earlier in Florida and whom no one noticed because it was a black on white crime.

Todd S| 4.20.12 @ 10:55AM

Tucker is best to stop talking about the case because he is making himself look stupid doing so. His argument that we have to arrest someone just because a racist mob demands it is garbage. And does he think it is best to convict Zimmerman of 2nd degree murder if that it was is needed to "keep the peace"? Like OJ should not have been convicted of the brutal double murder he committed to "keep the peace" who will riot otherwise? I think we should stick with the rule of law and not mob rule and put the race agitators in their place or behind bars if that is what they deserve.

Bob S| 4.20.12 @ 10:43AM

You had me until the last section. No, the purpose of the justice system is not to keep the peace. It's to protect citizens from abuses of power, be it by other people organizing a mob, by governments overreaching, or by governments violating our rights and the Constitution.

Crassus| 4.20.12 @ 2:40PM

When it comes to race relations, Tucker thinks like your typical white liberal. He's scared to death of race riots because he fears that his own home will get burned to the ground by rioters. Therefore, George Zimmerman and his like must be sacrificed to the mob so that we can all get along.

martin j smith| 4.20.12 @ 11:17AM

chuck| 4.20.12 @ 12:19PM

Reagan.

He deregulated the oil and gas industry, leading to mass production in this country. This led to a collapse in the world price of oil, thus lowering the price of gasoline.

I was in Houston in the '80s, a huge oil town. The bust of 84-85 in Houston was huge, caused by the collapse of oil prices. However, the rest of the country prospered.

Of course now you'll try to prove me wrong.

You are wrong - after 1985 or so our oil production declined and has gone on declining ever since, while foreign imports rose to meet higher comsumption. And the modest trend in increase up to 1985 started before he came into office.

Al Adab| 4.20.12 @ 2:08PM

Wait jack,
Obama claimed just the other day that US oil production is at an all time high.

I sure wish I could figure out who to believe these days.

Jack London| 4.20.12 @ 2:37PM

Al - Obama said production was at an eight year high, which is correct, and I stand corrected, because finally production has started to rise again. Projections for combined US/Canadian production could even match the 1972 all time North American high in the next 4-5 years. But Canada will have a much larger proportion now.

Al Adab| 4.20.12 @ 3:18PM

OK, so if we were to stop exporting North American production and start processing it solely for ourselves, what effect would that have on supply and prices? At least we can have a civil policy discussion.

Jack London| 4.20.12 @ 3:53PM

What? Are you proposing an anti-free market solution? You'd seriously raise taxes to pay producers to lower the gas price? Maybe you'd nationalize the producers? Al - are you feeling well?

Al Adab| 4.20.12 @ 4:24PM

? - LOL,
I don't think I mentioned anything about T***s (pardon the obscenity).

It does however make sense from a national security viewpoint to keep domestic production onshore instead of exporting a hundred tankers and importing a hundred tankers. Until we produce a surplus as against domestic market demand our domestic production should remain here. That doesn't require any nationalization of industry or even further regulation. What it might require is the construction of say a half dozen new refineries. It should not matter to American citizens what other countries pay for oil and gas, but it should matter that we export a product for which we have a need internally.

Actually, I do have a bit of a headache today. Perhaps its my election year allergy.

Purp| 4.20.12 @ 4:54PM

Al - the oil lobby would never let that happen. Unless we got money out of politics, the entrenched will stay entrenched - and that's not a D or an R thing - it's an American problem.. our democracy is being bought by the highest bidder - and Big Oil got Big Bucks.

Jack London| 4.20.12 @ 5:01PM

Yes - but keeping it onshore means what? What is your aim? First, we will always need imports. Second, we are exporting a lot of refined oil. Third, our consumption has been going down.

Seems to me the big complaint is the price of gas at the pump. The only way it comes down is if world oil prices come down or we subsidize it. Or - and this what Argentina is doing - we put on price controls and/or nationalize home producers and fix a proportion of home supply.

Seriously, the days of low pump prices are gone for good - the world market and climate change will see to that.

THKrupp| 4.20.12 @ 5:07PM

It wouldnt matter. The markets would adjust and the world supply of oil would still be the same at the end of the day. The price would be the same. What you propose would be that the government basically owns the oil so it would be defacto nationalization of oil companies even if it werent literal nationalization. The government does not own the oil the oil companies do. By telling them they cannot export it or do with it what they want you are basically nationalizing the company.

Al Adab| 4.20.12 @ 6:34PM

Since much of the domestic production comes from leases on public lands, a non-export clause is easy. Again, there is no reason we should be exporting until we no longer import.

At about 75 dollars per barrell the shales oil deposits become viable as well. That equates to a lower price for refined products.

Anyway, I'm about to jump in my big Dodge truck and head out to the lake to burn some more. It is a matter of what individuals can afford is it not? Have a great weekend.

Oldefarte| 4.21.12 @ 1:45PM

Fool, 'production' is interpreted by this socialist regime as KNOWN OIL RESERVES only. Additionally production has increased only on PRIVATE LANDS, not the PUBLIC OFFSHORE LANDS that the federal government [ie Democrats] control [which has DECREASED IN 'PRODUCTION']. What these socialists are not telling you is the truth that POTENTIAL OIL RESERVES are 100 times or more greater than KNOWN OIL RESERVES in this country. Translation: we have more potential oil in this country than exists in the entire Middle East and Russia combined, but are not producing same due to the wacko envirnomentalists that control the Democratic Party radicals, that's why!!!!!!

chuck| 4.20.12 @ 2:38PM

Sorry Jackass, but the truth is that after 1985 and the collapse of oil prices, it was now cheaper to import oil than produce our own. It was known as the oil glut! Too damned much! Brought on by the massive amounts that WE were producing. I was in Houston. I have a Chemical Engineering degree, and I saw the massive lay-offs as the oil companies were eliminating entire departments.
Oil went from $35 to about $14, and oil producers were capping wells.

You want to see oil prices drop again? Then repeat what Reagan did, and free up the oil companies to produce the oil we have here.

DRILL BABY DRILL!

Purp| 4.20.12 @ 2:52PM

And damn our lives, our children lives, the water we drink, so you can drive fast - no. Why are YOU so entitled? As a Chemical Engineer you should know where oil comes from and that is a finite resource - when it's gone, it's gone. But even if we have 100 years of oil left, it is harder to get to, more costly, and more damaging to us to get it (BP oil spill anyone) . When will you wake up?

Al Adab| 4.20.12 @ 3:20PM

What bothers me most about your argument Purp is your proposed solution. Even if your scenario is correct why should we involve government and central planning in a "solution"? Will not people adapt their lives on a cost/benefit basis?

Purp| 4.20.12 @ 4:58PM

Ask Alexander Hamilton and you can argue with him: http://www.answers.com/topic/r.....nufactures - if it was good enough then for the Founders, it's good enough for me now. They didn't do so badly for us, did they?
Unbridled capitalism always leads to a disaster - except for the very few. You can ask Adam Smith too, in Wealth of Nations - the less quoted chapters. You don't have to believe me, but at least question the right-wing propagandists and find out what these men have said and done.

chuck| 4.20.12 @ 4:23PM

Actually, there are theories that oil and other hydrocarbons are naturally occurring in the earth. We know that methane, natural gas, occurs in the atmospheres of other planets. As such, it must have been present when the planets were formed. So isn't it possible that other, heavier hydrocarbons were also present? These would naturally be found in the earth, not in the atmosphere, as they are heavy enough to fall to the ground.

Or maybe Jovian dinosaur farts are responsible for the methane in Jupiter's atmosphere.

Purp| 4.20.12 @ 5:20PM

As a Chemical Engineer, you should know the answer to your own question. Theories are like opinions... Engineers deal in facts or bridges fall down, planes don't fly, and engines don't run. Can't say about Dinosaur farts - but cows are polluting the atmosphere, as beef consumption rises, now aren't they?

chuck| 4.20.12 @ 4:28PM

And Purp, if the damned Federal Government hadn't put the easy places to drill for oil off-limits, such as ANWR and the shallow areas of the Gulf, the BP spill never would have happened, or the impact would have been less. As it was, a mile down, it is much more difficult to contain than if it was only 200-300 feet deep.

And where is the long-term impact to the Gulf region? The biggest impact I see is the unemployment caused by Obama's illegal moratorium on new drilling.

Purp| 4.20.12 @ 5:27PM

Ask the State Governors and the people of the States you're expecting to bear the brunt of a spill.
You're a Chemical Engineer and you don't know where the oil went? It's not on the surface of course. But is still having an impact.
http://news.yahoo.com/scientis.....51853.html
If we don't care about the shore people's livelihoods or fish and other wildlife, then sure, drill everywhere on Earth and chips fall where they may. Nice scientific mind you have their, Chuckles.

chuck| 4.20.12 @ 9:43PM

You just don't comprehend well, do you purp? I didn't ask where the oil went, I asked where the long-term impact was. The oil evaporated, some dissolved, and some remains as heavy asphalt-like balls on the ocean floor, where it has no impact. Oil spills have a devastating short-term impact, but no long term impact.

Engineers do deal with facts, but truthfully, the origin of crude oil and natural gas is in question. My own belief is that is it naturally occurring in the earth, was there when the earth was formed, and has nothing to do with dinosaurs.

As for a scientific mind, I'll put mine up against yours any day.

Purp| 4.21.12 @ 2:30AM

Fine - then I'm sure you know that ALL the heavy elements in the universe, including on Earth originated from Supernovas exploding with the pressure and heat intensity enough to produce the various elements arising from H and He. ( you do know what those are, don't you) Fusion reactions in stars also produce some, but not like the supernova. Other than man made elements of the periodic table (you know what that is I hope), all the rest, except H and He have come to the Earth this way. So while it is always conceivable, because we will never know everything there is to know about everything, that the origins of crude oil and natural gas came about your way, the likelihood of flammable compounds spewing from an exploding star are something to ponder, but not likely.
On the other hand, we can actually make fossil fuels (oh did you catch the name there - wonder why? ) with enough heat and pressure, for that matter we can make diamonds too. But these are made starting with carboniferous, if not organic compounds to begin with.
Since plants photosynthesize and create sugar molecules c6H12O6, etc. from CO2 and H2O with a dash of sunlight for energy (expelling O2)and they provide the lion's share of the organic material on Earth, it makes imminent sense that over millions of years dead plants and animals created layers of organic strata that when under pressure and enough heat and time converted to oil, gas and coal.
Your theory is interesting, but there is actual proof here on Earth of the conversion of fossils to fuel. PhD here boy... how about you?

Purp| 4.21.12 @ 2:31AM

Oh, and when the fossil fuels are gone, they are gone. No one is making anymore - unless you want to wait another 100million years.

PhD?

Actually that's all High School Chemistry. Throw in a couple of episodes of "Universe" on the Discovery Channel(yea, I saw those ones about supernovas, too). And the name fossil fuels is just that, a name. You know science does make mistakes from time to time. The Earth is not flat. The sun does not orbit around the Earth. Man-made global warming is a crock. Who knows, maybe, just maybe crude oil that is found many thousands of feet below the surface of the Earth was not remnants from dinosaurs, but is naturally occurring in the Earth.

Jack London| 4.20.12 @ 2:55PM

Nope - production only went up modestly under Reagan until 1985. What he did was just make us more dependent on imports. And we are producing more in North America now since 2009 - but as you must know, with your degree, oil prices are determined on the international market.

chuck| 4.20.12 @ 4:15PM

Don't use G-D's name in vein, idiot! and you left out then ending.......'sad' BUT TRUE!!!!!!!

John Navratil| 4.20.12 @ 4:19PM

Purp,

OPEC was formed in 1960. I'd say that neither Kennedy, Johnson or Nixon had an "oil crisis". The '73 shock was really the first time OPEC restrained the market in response to U.S. support for Israel. That would have been Ford. Carter got one for his port-Revolution handling of Iran - stopping purchases from Iran and driving prices higher.

Reagan deregulated. Crude and gasoline prices fell under him, Bush-1 and Clinton - so I'd say they didn't have an oil crisis. For that matter, we have high prices today for many reasons (weak dollar, higher foreign demand), but no crisis. Reserves are full. You can buy as much as you would like without waiting in lines.

So... what was the point of the question?

Jack London| 4.20.12 @ 5:27PM

Funny how people 'remember' history - it was actually Carter that signed the exec order on removing oil price controls (although Reagan enacted it). The glut in 1986 and collapse in prices was mainly cause by the Saudis trying to steamroller the marker and failing. The result for us was a drastic decline in our exploration and big trouble in some of our oil-dependent cities, not to mention some of the smaller oil producing countries.

And you say this wasn't an oil crisis? Well it was but at the other end of the scale.

John Navratil| 4.20.12 @ 7:43PM

Jack London,

I've lived in Houston since '73. Bought my first house in '85 at what I thought was the bottom of the market - I was wrong. I've worked in the energy sector as a programmer for 35+ years. I 'remember' it well - "Please God, just one more oil boom. We promise not to blow it this time".

The Oil business is cyclical. Purp asked which administration didn't have a "crisis".

The broader answer is that energy is always in "crisis". It is wealth. It's what let's use do all the things we wish to do and its efficient use has driven economies since before the industrial revolution.

When governments intervene, trouble always follows.

Jack London| 4.20.12 @ 8:20PM

'When governments intervene, trouble always follows.'

You're a funny man John - you must know that the oil industry is one of the most heavily subsidized industries by government, and that federal research is behind technologies such as fracking. Still, it would be painful to admit it I know.

Oh and I'll concede that intervention can mean big trouble. Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Iran, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Chile, Central America etc all come to mind.

Long before Obama was born in Coast Province General Hospital in Mombasa, Kenya commodity speculators were buying and selling contracts of various commodities from coffee (foods/softs) to crude oil (energies) to soybean oil (grains). In fact MF Global a commodity trading brokerage firm plunged into bankruptcy under the corrupt leadership of ex-Democrat Senator Jon Corzine, traces its roots back to a sugar trading company founded in England in 1783. Now in a desperate election-year effort to shift the blame for the high price of gasoline onto someone other than himself, Obama exposes as the culprit the evil "oil speculator". In reality the actual culprit is the Democrat/Communist party energy policies which are being orchestrated by the Marxist Environmental Movement.

Tucker is wrong about the reasons for Argentina nationalizing various industries – they were virtually given away by former governments, which helped destroy the economy. No country can afford not to control its strategic industries.

And lest any of us forget, it was when a democratic government in Iran tried to nationalize its oil industry, we stepped in with the Brits to overthrow the government and install the puppet regime of the Shah. Then came the Islamic takeover and the descent of the region into the chaos that led to 9/11.

But Tucker is entirely right about Trayvon Martin.

The Islamic takeover was supported by Jimmah and his fellow idiots in the State Department along with much of Europe, the Ayatollah told them he would bring Democracy to Iran unlike the evil Shah and of course they believed him. What's with the white race-baiting? Hasn't Tucker (I had to be careful I didn't start his name with an "F"!) heard of the phrase "Innocent until proven guilty"? It doesn't continue with the addtional words of "unless it's politically expediant to crucify someone if a large, unruly crowd assembles." I work less than a mile from the shooting site but thank god I live about 18 miles from Sanford. I just ate lunch with a table full of FBI agents whose shirts said "WFO". I asked one of them and they told me that stood for the "Washington Field Office". I'm doing my best to stop mayself from ranting but this has been a bad week in central Florida. On Sunday a jogger found what appeared to be 2 manikins burning next to a bike trail in Winter Park where we live. It turned out to be 2 of my Daughter's schoolmates that had their hands tied behind their backs, gagged, shot in the back of the head and then the killers twice tried to burn their bodies. They were both juniors but oddly enough, one was a 16 year white male and the other was an 18 year old black male. The police are trying to track down a black gang which is apparently well known in the area and one member has already left the country. As usual, the black on black violence is not reported as well as the double whammy of black on white. I have to disclose that Winter Park has a disproportionately white population but you don't see us storming the WP Police department screaming for "Justice for Nicolas!" What do you think would happen if we took a photograph of the "SUSPECTS" and posted a dead-or-alive poster with a reward. I don't hear Biden saying if I had a son he'd probably look like "Nicolas". Enough with this race BS. Remember, "Justice is Blind". That phrase SHOULD be "Justice is blind to race."

cicero| 4.20.12 @ 3:19PM

The talk about "speculators" is just another red herring to keep everybodies' eyes off of the apple. It is like the flap about whom to tax, rather than the cutting of spending. They have been rigging the numbers for 3 1/2 years now (actually 5 1/2), in order to make the economic illiterates think they are not going to be wiped out in the very near future. While the governing class is telling everyone that the debt is only 23% of GDP, they fail to let on that 1/3 of the nation's GDP is made up of banking transactions, which produce exactly nothing. Are we in trouble, or what?

fiscal| 4.20.12 @ 4:36PM

Well, Tucker, you are right in theory but not in practice. Oil speculation today does not have the risk associated with it as in the past due to the kind of trading done by large investors with supercomputers. These trades are done in milliseconds and not held for long periods of time. Many of them are trend based and profits are taken quickly and then further purchases are made all in a matter of seconds. If the trend starts declining, no more purchases and sales are made and the loss is minimal. This hurts the small investor without supercomputers because they take the brunt of losses. The type of trading you speak about is still done, but that's not where the profits are.

So today's speculators are not "speculators" at all, but mathematical geniuses with very fast computers. A speculator takes risk -- modern "speculators" don't.

Now, no one in their right mind believes Obama knows much about commodities and investing, but I'd be supporting regulating any investment where the purchaser does not take part of the risk. This was one of the major problems with the housing crisis as mortgage originators sold off their risk to CDO's and the resultant derivatives and thus they received no penalty for making bad mortgages. I'm not even sure that Romney understands today's market since it has changed so much since he stopped working in financial services.

fiscal - you are right on the mortgage issue insofar as you see that the mortgage originators sold their paper, and thus had no risk. However, had the hedge fund boys, and the banks who had their own proprietary trading desks (hedge funds), known that they would be stuck with their worthless poker chip paper, they would not have been buying the bad mortgages. As long as it is only the taxpayers who bear the risk, and stand to get none of the reward, nothing will change. The same little (big) game is now transpiring in Europe. The big banks are being given hordes of takpayer cash so that they can buy the next round of government bonds. The proceeds from the sales will be used to pay off the last round of government bonds, also owned by the big banks. When the inevitable default comes, the EU Central Bank will be left holding the bag, because that is who gave the Big Banks the money to buy the bonds with. Of course, the bankers and their pals in governfment will probably see their 100 million dollar stashes cut in half by inflation. On the other hand, the working middle class will be wiped out and left to eat their children.

fiscal| 4.20.12 @ 5:06PM

It wasn't the hedge fund guys that got hurt with those derivatives, it was the investment banks -- which is why they were bailed out. Most of the hedge funds were actually out of the mortgage market and many of them were selling that market short. Goldman Sachs was actually playing on both sides of that game and was also buying swaps from AIG. With the government bailout, it was AIG who was left holding the bag as derivatives were unregulated and thus AIG did not need to hold reserves against loses. In AIG's insurance businesses, which are highly regulated, they needed to hold reserves against claims. Regulation that forces companies to be responsible for their actions is good in my book and most people on the right don't understand that. Obviously, regulation that favors specific industries through tax credits, subsidies, deductions and other incentives is not so good in my book as the market -- properly regulated to force responsibility -- is a better way... (Something that Dems don't seem to understand.)

fiscal| 4.20.12 @ 5:27PM

One more comment... The investment banks created the derivatives and ameliorated the risk through swaps (with AIG). There is a chinese wall in investment banks so their proprietary trading desks may look like hedge funds, but from a corporate perspective, they are compensated by things like swaps and shorts. They make people on the outside believe they are the same as hedge funds, but they are not....

Our bottom rung MM mindless retarded parrots are driving MM staff crazy by continually coming up to us alone or in groups of 2 or 3 to quietly ask us, if Barney Fecal is pseudo-conversant on several of the quasi-effects of the housing financial meltdown, why then is Fecal Frank so oblivious to the the obvious cause of every one of the effects.

Even our bottom rung MM mindless retarded parrots, Fecal Genius Fecal, know the cause of the housing financial meltdown was the government coercing the financial industry to provide mortgages to those who could not afford them.

Even our bottom rung MM mindless retarded parrots, Genius Fecal Genius, know the government allowed the financial industry to get very creative in order for the financial industry to attempt the impossible of staying afloat when they are forced to do the mind bogglingly assinine and provide mortgages to those who would not be able to pay them back because they couldn't afford them in the first place.

Even our bottom rung MM mindless retarded parrots, Fecal Fecal Fecal, know the financial industry, accepting they were being in essence being blackmailed if not extorted into doing the ridiculously suicidal financially, went ahead with it correctly predicting that ultimately the taxpayer would foot the bill to prevent them from bankruptcy, and what the hell, took it as a challenge that maybe they were smart enough to pull it off.

Even our bottom rung MM mindless retarded parrots know, Genius Genius Genius, the housing financial meltdown would never have occurred if the government did not force the financial industry to provide mortgages to those who could not afford them and could not pay them back.

Most non insane people don't use their gastrointestinal system for an amusement park. Well there are you guys and my gay nanny who are somewhat confused on this but you know what I mean. We have Democratic cowards in the House and Senate that must be punished. They are again making me look bad. First they hosed my budget and now they are leaving the cause to join the Republicans in wanting to have an energy policy. Apparently giving money to our friends at various solar firms, high speed rail companies (this was the motivation for the Hell on Wheels mini-series), wind farm conglomerates and universities to be wasted like the GSA on a weekend retreat will not sell in their districts. Cowards I say. Lets put up candidates with the guts to stand with our ridiculous convictions. We need to get rid of those disloyal bastards. When the Dear Leader (Magic Black Man to you) says jump they should say how high? Apparently they aren't as faithful as you. Now with Keystone those bastards have given the Republicans a veto proof margin in the House and the Senate is already filibuster proof. Where is the courage? The Magic Black Man has spoken and they are running in the opposite direction. All I have with me our my gay trolls. There is nothing more comforting than having a bunch of girly men at your side. Business decisions are made in regard of the future, Obama's deleterious policies concern the future, and energy is in the Futures Market. The efforts of ignorant Bill O'Reilly and Obama to blame speculators for high oil prices are ridiculous. Natural Gas Prices have plummeted over the last few years; should we also blame this on the speculators? No, this rapid price decline occurred, as the result of new techniques which dramatically increased supply - the quantity of available natural gas on the market. The absurd "blame the speculators" line of reasoning completely diverts from the true cause of today's skyrocketing oil prices -Obama all out assault of drilling: Public leases are down 40% below 2003 levels: Obama forbidding drilling in ANWR, Obama’s moratorium in the Gulf, and Obama twice vetoing the XL-Pipeline. If Obama and his leftist enviro-fascist minions simply allowed the free-market to be unleashed, not only would we no longer be dependent on oil from unfriendly derelict foreign nations, we would even need the Canadian XL Pipeline.

To the CLINTIFIED ''''TRUE CONSERVATIVES'''' out there [I hope you understand the following]:
'.....Newsmax Michael Reagan: Obama Exploiting Dad’s Legacy For Political Gain
Friday, April 20, 2012 05:21 PM
By: Paul Scicchitano and Kathleen Walter
Michael Reagan, the son of the late President Ronald Reagan, tells Newsmax.TV that President Barack Obama has been playing a game of “three-card Monte” with his father’s memory in an attempt to win support for his re-election bid.“They’re trying to actually put words in Ronald Reagan’s mouth and, if people don’t really know Ronald Reagan, they may be led to believe that Ronald Reagan would be against his own party and be for the Democrats in this next election — and I think that’s exactly what he’s trying to do,” Reagan charged in an exclusive interview on Tuesday.“He’s playing three-card Monte with Ronald Reagan and I’m glad I’m here to make sure that I know where they’re hiding the ball,” added Reagan, a Republican strategist and head of the Reagan Legacy Foundation.....He said that Obama would have Americans believe that President Reagan would be supportive of his so-called “Buffett rule.”
Obama recently attempted to draw a comparison between himself and Reagan, referring to the Gipper as another “wild-eyed, socialist, tax-hiking class warrior” in an attempt to win support for his campaign for higher taxes on top U.S. earners. Moreover, Obama said that he is not the first president to call “for this idea that everybody has got to do their fair share” and he offered to rename his proposal the “Reagan Rule” if it would sway Congress.“The reality of it is Ronald Reagan would be supportive of the Paul Ryan plan. Ronald Reagan would not be for what it is that Barack Obama wants to do — and is doing — to the United States of America,” Reagan insisted. Despite his misstatements, Obama is correct when he says that President Reagan would have difficulty winning his party’s nomination in today’s political climate. But the same can also be said of President John F. Kennedy, who would have difficulty winning the Democratic Party’s nomination, according to Reagan.
“Two iconic figures of their own parties would have trouble today getting the nomination. But Barack Obama is using that to make people believe that somehow Ronald Reagan would support his position on taxes — his position on what needs to be done in the United States of America to bring us to fiscal sanity, if you will,” Reagan declared, adding that his father would never have supported the Buffett rule.
Reagan also offered advice for Mitt Romney to how best to bring the party together to defeat Obama now that the former Massachusetts governor has emerged as the presumptive GOP nominee.“He needs to reach out to conservatives,” explained Reagan, who had endorsed former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. “They need to have a voice. And maybe that’s when he chooses his nominee for the vice presidency. Maybe that’s where he’ll go to somebody who’s a strong conservative. Then, in fact, conservatives can rally behind, and therefore support Mitt Romney.”He believes that Romney’s best shot at winning the general election is if the Republican Party is “100 percent” behind him. “It’s got to be about Barack Obama. It can’t be nitpicking at our own candidate and finding his flaws. But it’s got to find the positive side if there’s going to be change and we have to get rid of Barack Obama. That’s the way Mitt Romney can go out and win,” declared Reagan. “If we are not together as one on Nov. 7 of this year then Barack Obama will win another four years in the presidency.”
But Reagan cautions Romney to be wary of people who may claim to have worked on his father’s campaign. “As much as you hear Barack Obama using my father’s name; as much as you hear Republican candidates using my father’s name; there are also people who work on campaigns who, in fact, drop my father’s name every single day — as if they were hooked to my father hook, line and sinker. And those things are not always true,” he warned. “Always check it out. Because many people who say they worked on my father’s campaign when he became president, in fact were fired, and not on the campaign at that time.”He said that Romney should surround himself with people who have been associated with winning political campaigns, as opposed to losing efforts. “It’s time to shed the Republican Party of the old guard and bring in the new,” he declared.
Reagan draws a parallel between the 2012 election and his father’s successful election in 1980. If Romney makes the election about Barack Obama, he can be successful, according to Reagan. “If the election is about Barack Obama, as in 1980 the election was about Jimmy Carter, then yes, it can be like 1980,” he explained. “But if the election is about, you know, Mitt Romney. If the election’s about in-fighting within the Republican Party, and is he a true conservative? Is he not a true conservative? Maybe we should have voted for that guy — and we get caught up in our own minutia — then in fact, it won’t be like 1980. It will be like 1976.”He did not know enough about the relationship between Romney’s father — George Romney, the popular three-term governor and automobile company chief executive in Michigan — and President Reagan, to say whether the two men were close. But “you’ll never meet anybody anywhere who ever had a bad relationship with Ronald Reagan,” quipped Reagan.
That is everyone except possibly Reagan’s predecessor in the Oval Office.“Jimmy Carter to this day is still mad that Ronald Reagan beat him, and still thinks that Ronald Reagan somehow cheated him out of winning his second term as president of the United States of America,” he said.President Reagan once gave his son insight into the presidency that may be relevant for Romney. “He said, ‘Michael, you’re elected president, but there comes a time in every one of our lives when you no longer look at the fact you were elected, but that day is, you become the president of the United States, and understand the authority and the power that you now have, and then what you have to do with it.”...........'

A salient point about oil speculation, as opposed to say gold, is that the ratio of speculative storage capacity to daily demand is very low. The only player with sufficient volume to affect prices is the Kingdom. George Soros simply does not command sufficient storage space at Cushing or elsewhere to be able to influence pricing except in micromarkets (such as California-grade gasoline). Thus, the futures exchanges are blameless with respect to movement in the global price of WTI or Brent. Obama and his energy team know this but truth is at best an option with those clowns.
