Teachers’ unions admit Gov. Walker’s reforms are working.
When debate over public unions flared up in Wisconsin last year, educators claimed Gov. Scott Walker’s austere reforms would require thousands of teachers to be laid off.
They were wrong.
With small changes in pension and healthcare contributions while allowing school districts to buy health insurance plans on the open market, Walker’s reforms have resulted in what could be considered a statewide teacher-retention program. School districts such as Wauwatosa, hometown of Governor Walker and the Weekly Standard’s Fox News star Stephen Hayes, faced a $6.5 million deficit and planned to lay off dozens of teachers. But Walker’s reforms allowed all those teachers to remain employed.
At other large school districts such as LaCrosse, Racine, Wausau, and Beloit, if there were any layoffs at all, they were limited to two or fewer. And in addition to retaining teachers, the reforms have instituted merit-based pay systems that allow excellent teachers to be rewarded.
However, not all school districts adopted Walker’s reforms so readily. Milwaukee’s school district, which is immediately east of Wauwatosa, rammed through a union contact in December, just in time to avoid being subject to the reforms.
Now it appears the Milwaukee district is reconsidering its hasty action.
After the City of Milwaukee announced last week that Milwaukee Public Schools would have to contribute almost 10 million additional dollars to the city’s pension plan (which covers non-teaching employees, such as engineers and educational assistants), the Milwaukee teachers union made the unusual move to write a joint letter with the non-union school board and administration, requesting an additional 30 days to negotiate compensation and benefits.
This request comes on the heels of a 90-day window between November and February to adjust teacher contracts. As the legislation signed by Walker, known as Act 10 and Act 65, makes it impossible to alter existing agreements without nullifying them, a decision to extend this window will have to be made very soon, as the Wisconsin legislature’s general session completes its work today.
However, no matter how badly reforms are necessary, other union leaders are not happy with the Milwaukee teachers union for essentially admitting that Gov. Walker was right, especially before the recall election.
On Tuesday, teacher union leaders who are heavily involved in the recall fired off a letter to Milwaukee teacher union (MTEA) leaders Bob Peterson and Sid Hatch. It made their political concerns crystal clear:
Dear Brothers:
We write to express our grave concern that MTEA has asked their legislators to introduce and work to pass legislation which would enable MTEA and the Milwaukee Public Schools to enter into an agreement in which MTEA would make economic concessions such as those enacted by Governor Walker’s WI Act 10.
The undersigned believe that such legislation would be detrimental to our members’ best interests: i.e. our Districts would likely push for similar legislation, given the precedent established by MTEA. Further, we believe such legislation will have an adverse impact on all Wisconsin public employees. Such legislation will enable Governor Walker to claim victory of his policy to reign [sic] in public employee wages and benefits. Because he did not adequately fund education, we are all currently suffering. Allowing Governor Walker to make such a claim just before the recall election will prove detrimental to recalling him and, therefore, will only enhance his ability to further harm all Wisconsin public employees.
We ask that you immediately withdraw your request for this legislation.
The letter was signed by union representatives:

Very good article. Walker is the best public official elected in this state in my long life. It would be terrible if he loses the recall election. The unions are awful here. I think he is going to win and by a good margin. At least I hope and pray so.
Appleby| 3.15.12 @ 6:53AM
Same thing is happening here in Toronto. The libraries are threatening to strike, despite the fact that when other government services went on strike, people discovered they didn't actually need those services (and considering the pitiful state of my local library, this is a foregone conclusion library-wise). The only unions left in positions of putative power are the "public sector" or government employee unions, and fortunately they are fighting a rear-guard, losing action to convince the working or would-be working class that unions are necessary. Spread the word.

"Walker is "under criminal investigation for illegal use of campaign finances.""
That is an outright bald faced lie. Even the link you provided does not say that. The fact is others who worked for him are in hot water. Using your logic all teachers must be pedophiles because how many teachers in the last few years have been convicted of that in WI?
Sweeney| 3.15.12 @ 12:27PM
You should also mention that if WI had a more aggressive AG who would confiscate PCs from public employees who favor the Democrats, you would find a whole lot more and more severe criminal investigations than what are going on now. Unfortunately, JB is MIA.

Ah yes file in Dane county. Surprise me that a judge from Madison would make a decision like this.
Scott Schoemann| 3.16.12 @ 12:08AM
Walker screwed us on this one too... IF the IDs were available at the DMV do you think the Judge would have banned it? In the past we had our licenses/IDs within minutes of the photo being taken. Thanks to Walkers cuts, so he could give BIG BUSINESS HUGE tax cuts (and small business big tax increases) there is not the manpower to process the IDs at the Local DMV, or the money to FINISH replacing the aging ID printers that Doyles dipsticks did not replace when they were supposed to. Instead the IDs are processed in California with our tax dollars (could be cheaper to do here, long term) and mailed to the person it belongs to, taking up to 21 calander days. Ths not only removes the "timely issuance" of the ID, it disenfranchises the homeless who have no permanent mailing address but still have the constitutional right to vote... Walker Screwed the Pooch, again, due to his budget cuts... And once again ALL Wisconsinites pay because of his short sightedness and temper tantrums.
Lost| 3.16.12 @ 9:55AM
He did? Please explain. Lets see the ID's that are being made in California are for the federal REAL-ID law. This was passed in WI BEFORE Walker was governor. They are being made there because to have them made here would not be very cost effective.
WI has had a requirement to have a valid ID long before the voter ID law. All the voter ID law did was to be able to verify you are who you say you are when voting. There are provisions in the voter-id law to cover what you are making up. The only ones that are having temper tantrums are those that believe voter fraud is no big deal. Have the fact not myths before posting

Those homeless who can at least use the address of a homeless shelter will get one free also. I'm sick of you lying Democrats! You've just about ruined our state. This second round of recalls will probably cost us $9 million dollars and I believe that is ultimately what the Dems want......... so they can say Scott Walker was a big spender!!!

Even in CT and NY pension math is overtaking Marxist power structures in the unions and minds of the general populace. Brown of CA is having to apply discipline to the pub unions for cripes! What some people, including its advocates, call Conservatism is no more than consistent application of a slide rule.

Texas Jim| 3.18.12 @ 3:17AM
Actually, Mark, what they're losing is their cozy lil' money laundering scheme. The unions "bargain" for raises in salaries and pension benefits, extort dues from their members (who have no say in how their dues are being used, btw) and give it back in the form of campaign contributions to the very politicians who "negotiated" the raises in the first place. The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round...
cicero| 3.15.12 @ 1:54PM
To see the ultimate end game concerning public sector pensions, you need only look at Detroit. As of this morning's edition of the WSJ, Detroit finds itself in the position where even if it lays off all of its employees, it still can't make payroll. This gets funnier by the day. Despite that, the Mayor, who was supposed to be a brilliant businessman (actually a NBA basketball player who parlayed affirmative action into a business that lived on setasides before if went broke), refused the offer of the governor (who was a successful businessman), that required the surrendering of power by the elected officials, and accountability for the offered $100 million bail out. The geniuses who live in and run the city have stood by their position that they don't want to surrender their democratic (Democratic) right to run their own city (into the ground). Looks like Detroit will aquire the distinction of being the largest city in the country to sample the waters of Title 9 Bankruptcy protection.

Charie| 3.17.12 @ 10:37PM
Absolutely correct The Bruce. Somehow or another the unions, especially the teacher's unions have interpreted "peaceably assemble" to mean you bring your drums with extra heavy sticks and your vuvuzelas so you can blow your eardrums out after you've already broken everyone else's around you. Screaming and yelling is pretty peaceable, too, so you do as much of that as possible. Writing "F Walker on the bathroom walls in the capitol itself is always a nice peaceable touch, too.
There was nothing peaceful about that mob who were rioting in Madison. A friend of mine brought speakers because there was a counter rally about 2 or 3 days into that mess and the rabidly raucous rioters broke both of them. Did you ever hear about that?
Marc Jeric| 3.15.12 @ 6:19PM
All government employees unions are by definition criminal conspiracies against the people, and should therefore be routinely prosecuted under the RICO Act laws. In particular the teachers unions who have brought Americaneducation from the first in the world to the level of Zimbabwe.
In Las Vegas (Clark county) there are 300,000 pupils (not students - students are attending univesities), 18,000 teachers, and 20,500 "other" schoo; (ignorant of science, incapable of math, religiously intolerant, racist, misogynist, and ignorant of the principles of secular society) employees. Teachers claim that to improve education the average class size must be reduced from 40 to 16 pupils per class. But at 40/class that requires only 300,000/40=7,50o teachers; so what do the other 18,000 - 7,50o = 11,500 "teachers" do?

I notice that NONE of the individuals from the THREE school districts listed actually list any of the TRUE UNION affiliations that represent educators within the State of Wisconsin, the "associations" listed are not affiliated with the AFL/CIO which all the Wisconsin teachers unions are, and these are people have been PAID to appear in TV commercials by the Koch Bros, who are not even residents of the state and are pouring millions of dollars into Walkers anti recall campaign (aka Forward Wisconsin). These facts are well known to the Residents of Wisconsin, and are part of the reason Scott Walker has retained the services of THREE INDEPENDENT CRIMINAL DEFENSE ATTORNEYS. What you neglect report, is there HAS been large scale layoffs, outright terminations, and no replacement of retired educators. Building repairs have been halted as funds have been removed from the budgets, textbooks that are falling apart can not be replaced, class sizes have doubled in many instances and what were once INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICTS, where parents CHOSE to live, to supply the best educations for their children, have been dumbed down to the lowest common denominator because Walker froze LOCAL school taxes to make sure HIS "plans" were the only ones that could get credit. This man who was kicked out of Marquette University for CRIMINAL VANDALISIM and PLAGERISM belongs in Jail NOT lying to the press from OUR Capitol... Do your home work before reporting HIS lies.

These are public sector unions. The AFL-CIO which was hand in glove with WEAC, the Wisconsin Teachers' union is a private sector union and if the teacher's union is affiliated with a private sector union I'll be down in Madison filing a lawsuit Monday morning....... early.
If the people in those ads were actors then why were the unions sending poison pen letters and e-mails to the one named Kristi. She was a charter school teacher who they were trying to hound out of her profession, you damned liar!
As far as the Koch Brothers go, does the name Soros ring a bell with you? That destroyer has poured as much money into this state to take down the Republicans and Scott Walker as the Kochs could only dream of making, much less being able to give that much money to political campaigns. Do you seriously think they would ever be in a place where they could try to bring down the Bank of England the way Soros did?
How did these school (and their textbooks) all manage to fall apart in one year? Has it never occurred to you that perhaps those things were well on their way to decrepitude before Scott Walker appeared on the scene? And who was the governor before Gov. Walker? Democrat Jim Doyle for 8 years, leaving this huge economic disaster for Scott Walker.
I can see you've already done your homework and it was down at Democrat HQ with Graeme and Tate, those water-carriers for Obama and the unions.
Scott Walker never did anything dishonest in his life and the fact that the Dems are trying to associate him with those men who worked in his office and stole money from that fund is despicable. I heard one of the Dems say (on the radio) , "But you were sitting just a matter of feet away from them you must have known what they were doing." They did and he didn't. You seem to be leaving out the little factoid that he was the one who reported that the money didn't match up and the fund should be audited. Funny how you Liberal rags manage to forget that type of thing. Of course, honesty means nothing to you.
He was not kicked out of Marquette ( I've run out of expletives) and he didn't lie about anything unlike yourself. LOOK IT UP!!!

Just get the truth out to the people. That is the best way to fight corrupt unions. The simple fact that the budget has been balanced with no loss of jobs says it all. This also means a more friendly business environment which means more jobs and less unemployment. A win-win for the people of Wisconsin. Keep Walker, the best thing to happen in these parts in a long time.
FiddlerBob| 3.17.12 @ 1:22PM
A friend of mine is running for school board in a nearby district. He has calculated that local districts would be much better off financially if they were to reassert their independence from the state and federal governments. The money that communities receive from state and federal sources is usually less than the cost of adhering to their mandates. It just adds an additional non-productive, out-of-touch, unaccountable, bureaucratic structure to pay for. (Unions do the same thing.)
This is a great lesson to all who are willing to "sell their soul" to the government/union "devil" for promises of honey and gold.
What we really end up paying for is for government/union bureaucrats to steal our money, siphon off a good bit of it to their cronies, and then use the rest to bribe or threaten us.
This is exactly why our founders designed a limited government with clearly defined responsibilities and separated/balanced powers. From top to bottom - let's get back to it.

Notice that the states that have no unions(right to work states) are making what's left of our national economy work and are not in the demise like Michigan, New York, California, Illinois, well! you get the picture.
Unions are a way to coherce state and local governments to bending their will, Walker will win going away, and the Unions will....Go Away!, along with their band of thugs

Our Republican legislators have been getting threats, death and otherwise that the unions are out to get them and their families, ever since that disgusting temper tantrum at the capitol. They've threatened boycotts of businesses, one for not putting a sign in their window saying they backed the unions. There's so much that goes on still, that the news media never reports. Half the time it's like living in a war zone. I look at the sheeple who go blithely about their business without a thought that if the Dems get the upper hand in this state again we might just as well kiss each other goodbye because this state will sink under the weight of taxes and regulations.
There was a vote just last week as to whether the state would loosen mining regulations enough so that a company could come in and do open pit mining for iron ore because the present day regulations are so onerous it would take almost a decade for them to be hurdled so the company could actually start digging. The Democrats voted "no" in the state senate and managed to get one Republican who almost always votes with them anyway to vote "no", too. Even the unions came out in favor of the mine and their bosses gave some rip-roaring speeches only too little too late. I think they did it because they wanted their members to think they actually were earning their union dues salaries.
Michigan and Minnesota both have iron ore mining in their states as Wisconsin used to. One of the open pit iron mines is now a deep lake where SCUBA diving is taught and there's a nice sand beach for swimming and picnicking. There are also hiking trails around it. BUT because the almost thousand jobs that would have been created would be credited to Scott Walker, the Democrats wouldn't pass the mining bill. And it would have been private sector money, not taxpayer money.
P.S. The mine was to be in Iron County. How's that for irony?
Everything the two trolls on this site said was nothing but fabrications from the Democrat rumor mill. God protect us from them because they grind not only fine, they grind fast.

I support Scott Walker and am so proud of him. He has undergone threats and intimidation, someone threatening his kids through facebook, driving by his house and protesting there and so much more. ANYONE else would have caved, but not our brave governor. I am going to be getting a special yard sign (and/or small sign for my vehicle back window). I think it will have it say.
Governor Scott Walker
Having the guts
to make the cuts
or
Standing strong and
Where he belongs
