“We did it again.” So began Rick Santorum’s victory speech in
LaFayette, Louisiana, where he was celebrating two victories none
of the experts had predicted. The former Pennsylvania senator has
now won 10 states, but his victories Tuesday in the Alabama and
Mississippi primaries might have been his biggest surprises so
far.
Santorum spent so many months as the hopeless underdog of
the Republican presidential field that his successes always seem to
surprise the experts, who counted him out of contention before the
campaign ever began. The experts never gave him a chance to win the
Iowa caucuses until he won on January 3. The experts wrote that off
as a fluke, and another 35 days passed before Santorum won again —
a triple victory February 7 in Minnesota, Missouri, and Colorado.
That was likewise counted as insignificant, and all the experts
accepted the explanation from the Mitt Romney campaign that these
were insignificant “non-binding” contests which made no difference
to the former Massachusetts governor’s status as front-runner. A
week ago, on Super Tuesday, Santorum won three of the 10 states
that held contests. The next day in Boston, the Romney campaign
gathered the press corps for a briefing where top aides explained
that the mathematics of the delegate count made their candidate all
but certain to win the GOP nomination. As one of the aides said, it
would take “an act of God” for Romney to lose.
Perhaps God overheard that remark, or maybe someone forgot
to explain to Republican voters in Kansas that they didn’t matter,
because Santorum won the caucuses there
Saturday. This brought Santorum’s total of victories to eight, but
again, the experts dismissed the result: Romney and former House
Speaker Newt Gingrich hadn’t even bothered to campaign there. None
of the experts saw much significance in Gingrich’s absence from
Kansas, but he had canceled his schedule there after Santorum won
Tennessee on Super Tuesday, which signaled Newt’s unexpected
vulnerability in the South. Gingrich doubled down in Alabama and
Mississippi, which at one point last week his campaign called “must
win” states for him, before deciding to lower the
stakes.
Meanwhile, the experts looked at the polls, the average of
which showed Santorum
third in Alabama and also
third in Mississippi. So, the experts agreed, the big question
Tuesday was whether Gingrich or Romney would win. Once again,
however, someone forgot to tell those darned Republican voters that
the experts had already agreed on the outcome. And so, after
Santorum had already been declared the winner in Alabama, but while
Mississippi was still seen as “too close to call,” the guy nobody
thought could win took the stage in LaFayette and told his
supporters: “We did it again.”
Perhaps the experts didn’t notice that Santorum spoke in
the first person plural: “We did it again,” the pronoun
signifying a large group of grassroots supporters who kept working
for victory even when the experts said there was no chance Santorum
could win. “The time is now,” the winner said, “for
conservatives to pull together.”
Santorum wasn’t speaking merely to the
Louisiana voters in the room, but also to the night’s biggest
loser: Gingrich, who evidently had no intention to “pull together”
if that meant dropping out of the campaign. When Newt went onstage
in Birmingham, he vowed to stay in the race all the way to the GOP
convention in Tampa. The logic of Gingrich’s campaign had just
become utterly implausible. He followed up his defiant speech by
going on Fox News for an interview with Brett Baier, who asked: “If
you can’t win in Alabama and Mississippi, where can you win?” Newt
had no real answer to that question, and none of the experts on the
Fox News panel — among them the eminent Charles Krauthammer —
were able to discern any real “path to victory” for the former
Speaker.
What happened Tuesday night was another surprise in a long
series of surprises, and who know how many more times will Santorum
win such surprising victories?
Don’t ask me. Go ask the experts. They know everything,
right?

I don't believe in a brokered convention. I want a full 3rd party. The tiny minority of the American voters who have control of the Republican party, can keep it. A third party would keep the heat on both Obama and the Republicans. Ron Paul polls near 20% as a third party candidate. The people want something better then Mitt, Rick, or Barack. They have no answers for anything. But at least Obama is pretending to be against more wars. A 3rd party campaign would keep discussion of the issues I like going. It also would force Obama to be more of a peace candidate. After 12 straght elctions the Republicans can count me out. I am putting my pictures of me with George Bush Sr. Tommy Thompson, William F. Buckley, Dan Quale and oliver North where the sun don't shine. Actually I did that long ago. I really don't expect Ron to run. But I have hope someone else I can vote for will.

That doesn't hold: after the trilliuons spent on the war- Ashcanistan is no better off, etc... the laundry list, and so forth.
Thom| 3.14.12 @ 6:55PM
Alan,
We’ve haven’t sent trillions on this “war”. The bulk of what has been spent on this “war” has gone into infrastructure for the countries involved or logistics supporting our presence there. The overwhelming bulk of our National Debt was spent on domestic spending right here and includes over 4 Trillion in Social Security Debt in IOUs for which there is no revenue stream to repay along with a permanent deficit in both Social Security and Medicaid/Medicare spending that will dwarf what we’ve actually spent on this “war” in a few short years.
As for being safer or not, well have 3000 Americans died due to terrorism in this country since 9/11/2001? There are literally tens of thousands less of the kind of people that do that kind of deeds today…. If you don’t think “war” has some influence on this you could ask the Japanese and Germans why they haven’t attacked us since WWII.
Hyperbole has its place but for it to be effective there must be an element of truth in it. Both of the legs your hyperbole stands on are demonstrated to be false.

Santorum is simply forcing Romney to spend cash Romney needs for Obama.
Santorum sounds like an arrogant nitwit when he wins. And he did not win much.
Dai Alanye | 3.14.12 @ 12:58PM
Considering Romney's delegate lead, combined with his inept personal campaigning, it's possible some delegates to the Convention will have to revolt. That is, vote for Santorum regardless of their assignment to Romney.
It'll create a fine mess and boiling controversy, but when the future of the nation is at stake, and defeating Obama of such critical importance, true patriots shouldn't hesitate. Nominating Mitt will plainly lead to failure in November. One way or another Santorum must be selected.
Bill Hussein O'Stalin| 3.14.12 @ 1:30PM
Santorum is weak. He won't get there from here.
Thom| 3.14.12 @ 7:16PM
Bill,
I won’t argue the point that Santorum isn’t the “weaker” of the two but I will make the point that by your own admission, Romney is staying in the race simply because he has a huge pile of money to throw at the problem but isn’t getting the votes respective of that money so on what basis is Romney going to get enough votes in Nov if he can’t even break 50% in liberal Democrat states where he is expected to win? Plurality Republicrats have lost every major national election in my life time. Given Romney’s spending ratio per vote gained he will need 2 billion in reserve to overcome King Obama’s billion and free campaigning efforts by the Democrat Media. If Romney can’t distinguish himself from Santorum and Gingrich at this point I would strongly suggest he can’t do the same from Obama by Nov. What Gingrich and Santorum do represent combined at this late date is a consistent and profound difference on the role of government over and above what Romney’s records speaks to and his inability to appeal to even a majority of the people calling themselves Republicans. He has strong appeal to certain Democrat groups which speaks to a weakness he doesn’t seem willing to correct as a person running for the Republican Presidential candidate not the Democrat candidate. See any problems there on Election Day for a man that leans Democrat, has his base of support in Democrat controlled states and is running for the Republican nomination? I do.
Bill Hussein O'Stalin| 3.14.12 @ 7:30PM
Your statement is so ridiculous I found myself laughing. I hope you don't cross the street by yourself. You state by my own admission that Romney is staying in the race because he has a pile of money. No, you freaking nut, I never said anything like that. You sound like a really sick individual in need of serious psychological counselling. Have you ever beaten anyone up because of all that inner anger? Sounds like it.
Thom| 3.14.12 @ 9:47PM
Bill,
I try to give people the benefit of the doubt when they make reasoned arguments but your shilling for Romney over the last few months has risen to the same level of obsession as daily displayed by Clint/Jack for Ron Paul. You can resort to name calling rather than address the central point I made if that makes you feel morally superior or such (you did suggest others drop out so Romney doesn’t have to spend money needed in the General election, you established the connection with money not I), but let’s deal with facts for a single moment.
Romney hasn’t broke the magic 30% average in the primary season thus far among Republican voters. He is consistently outvoted by two or more other candidates combined in every contest they all appear in. His spending for the votes he has gotten so far dwarfs the spending of his opponents on a per vote basis. Note plural opponents. Where he has won by the largest margins are in Blue or Purple states where large swaths of Democrats vote in open primaries. He will win his most vote totals in Democrat controlled States, that’s a given. In Virginia it was he and Ron Paul and Paul got 40% which is completely unrealistic for even Ron Paul in his home state. Look at the vote totals between Ohio and Virginia on a per capita basis and then tell me a large percentage of Virginia voters didn’t stayed home on Super Tuesday because the only choice they had was Romney and Paul. You get more votes in elections because you give people a reason to vote for you not vote against someone else by being the lessor of what many see as two poor choices.
Your arrogance in all things Romney will help him in Nov as well as Clint/Jack’s broken record platitudes and blinders have helped Paul in the primaries. Keep it up. Just what Romney needs is more elitism and arrogant condescension flowing from his most vocal supporters.
Bill Hussein O'Stalin| 3.15.12 @ 6:23AM
The only arrogance here is all yours. All you're saying is that you're shilling is somehow better than someone else's shilling. Aren't you wonderful? You're just a wonderful human being. Everyone is arrogant but you. But wait! Doesn't that define arrogance.
Take your benefit of the doubt and stuff it. You sound like a complete JACKA**.

That statement you made about him and his family is so ridiculous it deserved a retort. In fact, your statement that he looked so good standing there surrounded by his family is ludicrous. What has that got to with this credentials?
And his credentials are weak. His support of Medicare Part D shows he supported a top down federal program which dwarfs Romneycare. Somehow he gets a free pass at AMSPEC on that issue.
He's a phony conservative who voted for many liberal issues and that's why he couldn't get elected in his own state.

Say what you want about Newt but his campaign for lower gas prices has the Obama crew really blowing their cool. Did you see Chou's or is it chu's ridiculous capitulation.? Carney's hissey fit. Obama's own goofy twisted ideas on the subject ? Alot of fodder for campaign spots. It is so obvious hard issues have them lost and losing. They want us dancing in the streets over 8.3 unemployment. How weak is that ? They are starting to bleed a little. The media is always their to patch them up, of course, but wounds have a cumulative effect. Have you seen that icy monster Fluke all over the tube. She's weird, really weird. She's their ace in the hole' they think. This controllong nasty little future commissar in training. She is not what America wants in charge of anything. We can take this Obama guy out. Too many of you want the harder road with Santorum. So many states that would be in play will not be with him-such a tighter margin of error. Mitt would be the better bet.

Some how Mitt-Newt seems good to me. Fire and icee, ice and fire-whatever. Or, would the media destroy Newt like Cheney ? But, let us face it-Bush did not fight back. Remember his looney first press secratary. The guy was born and bred yellow dog democrat. He left and wrote a book stabbing Bush in the back. His crazy yellow dog mother was some kind of democrat hack down there-probably working with Rather and his trashy little producer. Who knows ? Day one why didn't they just say " what is your effing problem with Haliburton ". Ya see, a Godless man like me saw Bush as too damn Christion-turn the cheek and all that weenie crap, plus his wife kept his balls in a frozen lock box. Newt's wife looksw like she'd know how to apply a shiv to a liberal Ahole. Mrs. Romney has some mettle too- put arsnic in your tea and watch die-that's what we need. Is he a weak politeness man ? He was a killer in biz, and they say took no prisoners with the olympic debacle. Oh I forgot you're all ga ga over Rick. He's so sincere.

It's 1976 all over.
GOP is heading to a brokered convention. Romney is derailed after Super Tuesday and is poised to be more vulnerable than ever. While Santorum is surging in the South and Gingrich and Ron Paul are fading away. Romney and Santorum will go to Tampa and we have to see who come up on top in the convention.
It's now a "wait and see" game.
Con Chef (NB) | 3.14.12 @ 8:50AM
None of Santorum's victories have been surprises to me. I've said time & again on this site that those who count that guy out, do so at their peril. I knew that Santorum would be a contender when Perry, Bachmann & Cain were still in the race.
And to watch the Mitt-tards like Bill the Bigot & Paulistinians like Jackboot & Little Clit from Mommy's House on the Main Line bawl about a brokered convention is about as hillarious as an SNL skit. I guess these fake conservatives need to clutch & grasp at whatever straws they can find. Clutching at straws & polishing turds, to be exact. And its ALWAYS fun to watch idiots try to polish turds into diamonds.
Please, Mitt-tards & Paulistinians. DO continue. Y'all have provided more comic relief throughout this primary season than anyone could've ever hoped for!

I don't get on here that much but I am appalled that this site is becoming the Huffington Puffington Post II. How about a little civility here. When this is all over we are all going to have to come together and vote for the Republican Nominee, even if Daffy Duck suddenly comes out of a brokered convention the winner. Let's not forget, Obama and his minions are the enemy. They are the ones who must be deposed from their throne.

It's incredible the low level of debate here...one has to filter an awful lot of silly personal attacks just to get to a serious comment about the issue at hand (mainly the post).
disagree if you may but please take that childish and third rate attacks elsewhere...
it appears to be the same characters anyway...the target is electing a new president with different outlook, not personal character assassination.
Today is victory lap for Santorum, last week was Mitt and so on...that is why is called a 'race'...lead changes but it only matter who is at first last...
there are no seers here...we all have our favorites but that does not mean the other candidates are no good.
When looking in the mirror and one sees perfection then demand perfection for other human beings.
No doubt a debate between Newt and the president on energy would be a wonderful event. A debate between Mitt and the president on economic policy should highlight a very stark difference of financial world views. A debate between Ron and the president on the fed and treasury policies would be very vigorous or a debate between Rick and the president on ethics and morality should be interesting...
but the fact is most likely we'll never witness these events, except for one...but nobody knows which.
so lets stand back, breathe and chill the rethoric

Rich, your comment on the level of commentary here is right on and I compare it to young boys in a peeing contest. I have no interest in that.
The only thing I feel needs to be added to this article is that Newt's involvement is needed to keep the focus on Obama. He is the best at it and has the willingness to take it to the chief dissimulator in the WH. Rick appeals to family issues, but that has its limits. Romney's carpet bombing of GOP rivals is wearing out.
Bottom line All of them have serious limitations now and we might just have a combo ticket out of the convention. (Possibly before)

It seems to me Romney is going to be the GOP candidate & eventual, elected president of 2012, not that I 'm gung ho over it. (My mantra still is "Anyone but Obama.") Romney will need a reasonable & reasonably ethical conservative VP to offset his real & perceived liberal traits. Santorum might be that person. He at least has working experience in Congress.
There are some decent conservatives as governors & other elected positions out there. Unfortunately many of them are not seasoned enough, maybe in an election cycle or 2. I'm specifically thinking of those governors from NM, NJ, WI, AZ, & LA.
And, I don't want another Bush or anyone associated with them, ever again on a presidential ticket.

How is O'Romney the most electable against O'Bama?
O'Romney will be McLame 2.0. In fact, he will be worse than McShame.
Why do you think McShamnesty endorsed him?
He will not attack O'Bama.
He was the father of O'BamaCare.
He's as gaffe-prone as O'Biden.
He flip-flops more than J.F. O'Kerry.
He's a mushy moderate.
For every person, like me, who will hold their nose and vote for O'Romney if he's the nominee, there will be a person who will skip the presidential part of their ballot when they vote, or, they will just stay home.
If O'Romney is the nominee, all the conservatives who stayed home in '08, because McLame was the GOP candidate, will stay home in November. And, they will also keep someone they know away from the polls.
How exactly is O'Romney the most electable again?
George Collins| 3.14.12 @ 4:21PM
However you look at it, Republican registrations are up and Democrat registrations are down. Independents are leaning more and more to the right, and dissatisfaction with Obama is on the rise. So the underlying truth is that the Republican nominee will win, whether it's Romney, Gingrich, or Santorum. Romney will win the nomination whether we like it or not right now, because he will win Illinois, California, New York, and other delegate-rich states.
We need to back the Republican no matter who he might be, and elect as many Conservatives to the Senate and the House, to temper Romney's mushier tendencies.
Without writing a screed on the topic, I think that's a good summary as to what will happen, and why Romney is in the position of most-likely to succeed Obama.
Nick| 3.14.12 @ 5:20PM
Mr. Collins,
Prognostications on who will win the remaining primaries are like opinions and certain bodily orifices: Everybody has one.
And when it comes to the soothsaying, everyone has been wrong.
Nothing in your reply refutes the facts that I laid out about O'Romney. The number of "independents" O'Romney might bring to the polls will pale in comparison to all of the conservatives who will stay home. This is precisely what happened to McLame, even with his excellent pick of Governor Palin.
O'Romney will lose worse than McShame and Dole.
We will have to agree to disagree.

Gingrich is running a non-Romney campaign, a sentiment not missing from the electorate. He is also running for himself, not Santorum. As long as Gingrich is taking delegates from Romney, he is succeeding in one aspect of his campaign.
If (probably when) Romney reaches the 1/2 way point (score another for the establishment) whether Gingrich or Santorum is second or third is immaterial. It's all over but the lamentations.
Some may suggest that if Gingrich dropped out, Santorum would take the race. I would be very pleased if that were so; however I am not so sanguine.
I do not want Romney at all, let alone by acclamation. I favour those non-Romney delegates getting to the convention with something more than a ticket to the seafood buffet. Having Gingrich drop out does not further my interests.
Bill| 3.14.12 @ 10:55AM
The Southern Brawl:
1. Romney 2. Gingrich 3. Santorum
So far, 356 delegates from the South have been allocated to top 3 contenders. Romney leads with 160 delegates, followed by Gingrich with 116 delegates, and lastly Santorum trails both contenders with just 80 delegates. Even though Santorum won 4 southern states but he is far behind than Romney and Gingrich.
It ain't over yet in the South.

Maybe Gingrich is staying in the race to the finish because he’s decided Romney is his preference over Santorum. Of course, he can’t SAY this publicly.
So, in essence, his decision to not drop out is the way he can cast is powerful vote for Romney.
Also, as Newt approaches 70, he surely realizes this is his last hurrah, and so he wants to capture as many minutes of fame for as long as possible. He IS making a difference, in his own mind, and in truth.

The Obama LawBoy RCV Is Scared Of A Brokered Convention.
" A brokered convention is a situation in United States politics in which there are not enough delegates 'won' during the presidential primary and caucus elections for a single candidate to have a pre-existing majority, during the first official vote for a political party's presidential candidate at its nominating convention.
Once the first ballot, or vote, has occurred, and no candidate has a majority of the delegates' votes, the convention is then considered brokered; thereafter, the nomination is decided through a process of alternating political horse-trading, and additional re-votes. In this circumstance, all regular delegates (who, previously, were pledged to the candidate who had won their respective state's primary or caucus election) are "released," and are able to switch their allegiance to a different candidate before the next round of balloting. It is hoped that this 'freedom' will result in a re-vote resulting in a clear majority of delegates for one candidate.

It is NOW time for Gingrich to go. Not go completely away though. He can certainly be a big help by actively campaigning for Santorum.
The only reason that I can think of for why Newt won't go is that in his heart he prefers Mitt over Rick. No other explanation.
After all, they both have bought into global warming baloney and all the regs and restrictions that go with it.
They both believe in individual mandates for health insurance.
The both support the Wall Street bailouts.
They both are lax on illegal immigration and both would support amnesty.
The are both more socially liberal than Santorum.
Yep, that is it. Newt is staying in this contest to guarantee that Mitt and not Rick is the nominee.
How flippin' digusting. It is just like Newt to throw this stubborn, ego-driven temper tantrum. It is just like Newt to be a sore ass loser.
David| 3.14.12 @ 3:56PM
Old Farte, and who is it that you support?
I don't understand your apparent dislike of him. Could it be that you don't like his positions on social issues? If it is his votes for raising the debt ceiling several times, please recall that virtually everyone on both sides of the aisle voted for them. The debt ceiling only became a big issue the very last time it was debated.
Santorum will appoint the more originalist/strict constructionist judges than Mitt or Newt. Mitt and Newt will appoint judges like Reagan and both Bushes did. We were told O'Connor, Souter, Kennedy, et al., would be conservative, and they were not.
Recall that Bush the younger tried to shove down our throats Harriet Meirs before we rebelled and got Roberts. If Bush had succeeded with Meirs, he would have appointed what's his name, the weakling who was attorney general.
Santorum will support a National RIght to Work law as prez.

"If Bush had succeeded with Meirs, he would have appointed what's his name, the weakling who was attorney general."
Absolutely correct. A. Gonzalez was pathetic and still is. He was on Fox today praising the traitor Holder as "doing the very best job he can".
Talk about wanting to "throw up".
Dixon| 3.14.12 @ 4:06PM
Time for Newt to pull his big, creative brain off the trail and push it into the Santorum Campaign. I expect most, if not all of his delegates would pledge to support Rick and make the race 377 for the 89% Conservative Union voting Santorum to 496 for the moderate/progressive Mittens.
It would then be "game on".
If Newt stays, all he will spoil is keeping a progressive off the ticket and BO's defeat.
Newt - you know this! Do the right thing here.
David| 3.14.12 @ 6:20PM
Another take on why Newt won't go: He is getting back at Santorum because Newt believes that he could win the nomination if Santorum were not in the race.
The problem with that is that I don't think its a given that Newt could win the nomination.
What Newt is exhibiting is envy. Envy is when a person can't have something and he/she doesn't want the other person to have it either.
I believe Newt has shown his vindictive nature over the years and he is probably punishing Santorum.
His current supporters should simply ignore Newt because he can't win. They should start voting for their second choice whether it is Mitt or Rick. I suspect the vast majority of Newt's supporters would lean toward Rick. Especially aft the unfair hit jobs that Mitt did on Newt.
Dan| 3.14.12 @ 7:16PM
It doesn't matter how many states or electoral votes Santorum wins, he will not beat even the Kenyan born Muslim in Chief in a general election. He wins in states where the primary voters only care about far right conservative policy. That will not win the independent vote needed in a general election. You can believe he will not get any cross over Democrats in the general election. In the long run he will not defeat Romney for the nomination.

"The Tea Party Rebellion Heads To A Brokered Convention."
A Brokered convention won't decide who the nominee is; it will decide if any of those in the running now end up as VP to the one with the most votes. That’s it. A person getting 4 to 6% in primary season in what is either a two way or three way race has no influence on that decision mathematically.

Dan, are you really watching the same primary race the rest of us are watching. If so, your observations s_ck. It is clear that Santorum attracts blue collar workers and conservative democrats along with conservative repubs.
He may not win in the long run with Newt in the race. But I am certain he would if Newt would do the right thing for the country and drop out now.

Am I the only one who's been noticing that, amid all the distractions of the Republican primaries, Professor Obama's poll numbers keep dropping steadily as he and his acolytes continue to shoot themselves in the feet?
This most recent flag contretemps, wrought by the idiot Demos in Tampa flying Old Glory with a mug shot of the Professor in place of the stars, is just too deliciously bad to be true.
That the Obama flags were made in China is icing on the free cake. But to top off the icing, we get crunchy sprinkles in the ghastly expression on the Professor's troubled physiognomy: I presume the intent was to give him an air of seriousness and moral gravity--but in the bannered flag-picture, he just looks annoyed and petulant, with the face of a 16-year-old whose dad has confiscated the car keys.
Ah, artists. They always tell the truth, even when they're not aware they're doing so.
And now back to "Fall of the Roman Empire" (1964), undeservedly a colossal flop, coming as it did in the wake of "Cleopatra" (1963), a deserved failure, for Christopher Plummer in the role of Commodus perfectly anticipates the advent of Professor Obama when the Professor himself was only three years old.

In the years before formally codified flag etiquette, it was not uncommon for militia organizations to adopt banners and guidons that used a U.S. flag type background. I recall depictions or photographs of a number of regiments fighting on the Northern side in the War Between the States which have emblems or mottos embroidered on the stripes.
To the extent that Obama is the most divisive President in my lifetime (and likely during the last 150 years), perhaps his campaign staff’s use of this type of flag is emblematic of the civil war it appears they wish to ignite.

The "Experts" are on the Romney payroll and have been since the beginning.
His candidacy is a sham.
As are "The Experts".

When Santorum entered the race for the GOP he could barely gather 20 people to hear his stump speeches. Now the crowds swell to 5,000 as evidenced by this photo:http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/11713777-ron-paul-crowd-of-5000-in-illinois-but-hes-not-winning
and here is another huge crowd:http://www.dailypaul.com/220936/thousands-support-president-paul-in-missouri
Oh, wait a minute those are crowds Ron Paul has drawn. Rick is still pulling in a couple of dozen people.
